I want to know if anyone else is having this strangeness before I call VZW;
Without moving an inch my signal goes from 2 bars of 4G to 2 bars of 3G and then back again. I set the phone down and wait a couple minutes and it jumps to 4G again. Very sporadic.
When I run Speedtest sitting at my desk showing 4G I get 6.5MB down and 25+ Up. Then, 3 seconds later when it jumps to 3G I am getting less than 1mb down and 500k up.
I have powered down, pulled the battery and held power button, the powered back on. (Several Times) Same results.
So far it's only inside my building so it could very well be environment related. I just want to toss it out there and see if I am the only one.

LoL, I feel your pain. It's the building you're in. I was thinking the same thing. As soon as I step outside, it's 4G central. You're not going crazy or anything.
When I'm on the edge of 4G coverage, mine does the same thing.
So far, when I'm at work is when I have that problem. It's quite annoying actually. Every other building seems to be fine outside of where I work.

You ain't lying! I was like WTH! I honestly thought I broke the thing until I started walking out of the building. Kinda sad that it doesn't really work indoors at work. Like you said, time to get a new job... not yet, I like what I do lol!
When I'm in an edge of 4G area I notice it doing the same thing, it has having a hard time deciding what to do. Rebooting or putting in airplane/taking airplane off seems to fix it

Same thing happened to me yesterday, although slightly more weird.
I was happily tethering away at the office on a nice strong, fast 4G signal for a few hours, then all of a sudden data dropped out completely. Restart the phone and it only shows 1TTX, but eventually flickers up to 3G, but won't go back to 4G despite numerous reboots. Eventually it settled back down to 4G and all was well.
I guess it was some kind of tower problem, as my location doesn't appear to be anywhere near a non-4G area (see map below). The area my office is in (near the 405 fwy and Van Nuys Airport) has excellent maximum speed coverages by AT&T and even T-Mobile; it would be shocking to me to learn that VZW in the same area isn't full 4G (it's not as map shows).
Hopefully this was just a fluke, but it has me nervous and I'll be keeping an eye on the performance during my 30 day test period.

This is very similiar to what happened to me last night at a restaurant around 8:30pm in Tustin CA. Had one or two bars of signal, was streaming YouTube fine, data connectivity cut out even though signal was same, cycled through airplane mode, after a short period it came back at 1x then eventually back to LTE. I thought the LTE equipment bounced at that tower but it now sounds like it happened on a wider scale.
I guess it helps to post the following info to help correlate:

Same here. I'm still trying to figure out the battery life hand over from 3G to 4G and back. It does NOT appear to be graceful.
I too have had to revert to airplane mode to get 4G back up. What end up happening too is that 4G will be listed, but push notification stalls badly even though it seems like a solid signal.
Last night I turned off 4G the entire night and push was working fine in the morning, nearly instantaneous.
This morning I turned off 3G and forced 4G and after 4 hours everything seems fine with no push notification latency. So perhaps the hand off on the phone is real bad between 3G and 4G.

I've had a couple of instances I suspect over the last three days, but only the one that mentioned above where I can be sure. For me it was:
Fri 3/19 ~2:00 PM Pacific
stock rom unrooted at the time.
I would expect that to go away as they expand coverage, remember that this network is still being rapidly expanded.

Its 30 days for a defective exchange but 14 days to exchange or return the phone completely FYI
Here is a thing I have noticed and a friend got me thinking
If you pick up a call on 4G and travel into a non 4G area... your call will drop. Its weird because no one said this phone could support LTE voice.
But if you pick up a call on 3G and travel into a 4G area everything is fine, just be stuck on 3G until you end the call. Same goes for data, I tested this out with pandora and stays stuck on 3G until i stop.
The manager at the corporate store told me they were not having any problems with signal hand off's but I think he was lying or didn't know. I work as an agent at the edge of a 4G boarder and get tons of returns or questions about the service on the 4G air cards for people who live in the area or near the boarder.
Signal just drops before it decides what its going to try next, super annoying
Mine was switching all over the place and then would completely shut off with no data connection. I kept getting a retry. Finally I took the cover off and just put it back on and now it seems to be working fine. I guess the antenna was not connecting properly.?
you guys should try an evo on Sprint 4g and laugh at the wimax coverage.

I have been using the phone for 2 days now and I observed the following problems:
1. The WiFi signal is weak. I mean in the areas where my HTC Desire or iPhone 4 has one signal bar, the RAZR XT910 has no signal
2. The device does not wake-up sometimes. I have to press the power button several times. I guess this is lag from the android OS.
3. I have got some lags and errors from the android OS these two days. Hope some updates will come.
Please reply if you have similar issues with your device, especially the first two points.
Any 3G/UMTS problems?
I cant connect to 3G only EDGE.
I cant see 3G networks.

Agreed. I have an Australian Razr and have found the same issue. Haven't noticed an issue with speed but the signal strength indicator is definitely on average a bar down on my Galaxy.

Agreed too. Just happened then but instead of eventually waking it restarted. Has also happened once before but did eventually wake.

This might be caused by in pocket detection. Disable it, might help.

I have an optus razr
I have none of the issues you are experiencing. The 'low' wifi signal strength is probably caused because you are connected to a wireless-g router. The razr is capable of wireless-n . I always get full signal bars connected to my 'n' router and 2-3 bars on my 'g' router.
No issues using the power button to turn the phone on/off. No lag in the interface. Miss my optical trackpad from my desire though
My router is wireless-n. I have just checked with the router and it have the weakest from all my mobiles.
Anyone else with this problem?
Try to set your router to support a/b/g + n WiFi. Sometimes WiFi chips can behave very strange.

okay so, I'm back on XDA Developers after owning an iPhone 3, 3Gs and 4 for a couple years (after I moved on from my old Nexus One) and I've had the RAZR for a couple days..
an issue I ran into on the first day of owning it, was constant rebooting when the phone was put to sleep.. I couldn't figure out what the issue was apart from that it only occurred when I was connected to wifi at home (didn't happen when I was connected to wifi anywhere else or when wifi was switched off)... so I went back to the store I got it from for a replacement.. hoping that the phone wasn't going to encouter the same rebooting issues, to my bad luck, it kept happening.. so I thought that maybe it wasn't just because I got myself a dud (both times)...
so today I did some diagnosing the issue which I localised to being my router settings... and luckily enough, it WAS the configuration of my router... I tried to see what the differences were between my configurations at home, and that of the wifi routers at work...
So apparently, the RAZR doesn't like the following (could be just one of them, or a combination of both):
- SSID Not Broadcasting (i.e. Hidden SSID's)
- MAC Address Filtering.
So I unhid my SSID and now it's broadcasting, and I also turned off MAC Address Filtering and using WPA security instead.. Now the phone doesn't constantly reboot. Just odd that the phone doesn't like those settings. Anyways, just happy the phone doesn't constantly reboot when put to sleep.
Hopefully these details help anyone else who ends up running into the rebooting issues when put to sleep.
Have a same problems with my RAZR. But all my wi-fi network is hidden and wpa2 personal secured, but phone randomly rebooting only at work.
home router - time capsule (apple)
work router - d-link DIR320.
P.S. if i disable wifi on phone- no rebooting at all.
Raze phone issues
I have a Razr sourced from Mobicity in Australia, bought from them to avoid the Optus bloat. I love this phone it is a gorgeous piece of kit, big beautiful screen, fast etc. BUT twice in the last two days I have received phone calls, answered them, and the caller was unable to hear me. And ultimately I need this to be a reliable phone first and a gorgeous bit of kit second.
Anybody else suffering similar problems. I hav had to revert back to my iphone4 because I have to have a reliable phone for work. I'd love to find the issue and am open to any suggestions. I am on Telstra by the way.
Ok. Problems I have encountered the 2 days I have used the phone:
Constant freeze. The first hour I used the phone it froze and rebooted 7 or 8 times.
Missing SocialLocation.apk. This caused a problem for the GPS in smart actions to work at all. Rooted phone and installed the app, and problem disappeared.
Tried to hard reset the phone because of all the rebooting problems. Guess what, on the first menu coming up where you can choose language, the phone froze and rebooted again. Now still it is constantly freezing and rebooting.
The freezing issues does not really have one specific app causing it. It can happen whenever doing whatever!
Anyone got a solution for this? Maybe a OTA update for Norwegian model?
For anyone mentioning the loss of WiFi signal, i think its suffering from what the iPhone 4 did, its dependant on where you hold the phone, i think the WiFi receiver on the phone is right about where youd hold the phone (in the middle at the back of the phone)
I noticed i was getting the dropping of signal bars, so decided to test it out, holding the phone normally the bars would drop 1 maybe 2 (in my living room where my desire gets full bars) then held it around the edges of the phone and instantly got full bars again.
I cant say this IS the problem you lot are having, but i definitely find holding the phone a little differently from what i normally do makes a huge difference for me.
Anyway just my 2 pence, hope this helps some of you guys.

I have problem 1 and 2 and weak wi-fi even when the phone is on my desk (not touching it with my hands that is)
1、yes, the wifi is weak
2、when the phone is being charging, sometimes I press the power button it wakes but go dark quickly, and I have to press the button again
I'm on my second Razr right now. My first had the blotches on the screen when using a black background. My second Razr has an unresponsive touchscreen a few times a day. I used to assume that my phone was locking up, but it went to sleep when I pressed the power button, and woke up with a working touchscreen. It will also respond to volume and screen rotation, just no touchscreen until you sleep/wake it.

Maybe you have pocket detection enabled, and when you put your hands in front of the sensor the phone screen shuts off, you don't even need to put your hands in front of the screen, sometimes all you need is to make a shadow in front of the sensors and you will see the phone screen shut off.
Happened to me sometimes, but i knew right away it was pocket detection shutting off the screen.
Thank God i have no complains at all about my phone, maybe a the wifi weakness problem, but for me it still have a very good speed at home on wifi, so don't care about the bars at all.
Hello guys..i bought a RAZR XT910 before about 3 weeks and i didnt notice any problems with it at all..its battery life the way i organised it with smart actions is very very good, better than my iphone 4...i have as well those black marks on the screen on low lighting and black pictures but i dont mind this either..as u can almost never see it...my problem is my weak wifi signal..i never noticed it those last 20 days as i have been working on my phone mostly on my computer desk so the phone was next to the router..the only place my phone gets 4/4 in wifi signal its when its next to the router..at 1 meter distance the signal gets 3/4 strength..at 5 meters 2/4 strength and at 10 meters the signal its lost..and this is only when im at the same room that has the router..if i go to another room the signal gets lost..especially when i close the door...i never had any wifi problem with my previous smartphones and i even had wifi outside of my house...please help me here..im quite desperate..what shall i do? return it and demand a replacement? ask for my money back? is there any way to fix this?
I don't have that problem but I'm wondering if you get it with other networks? Also have you tried resetting your router?

yea i get it with all wifi networks...for example my university, work, home..etc
Hmmm. I just ran the Speedtest app and got 12Mbps download over my wifi. It would be interesting to try that a few places and show it to VZ. Maybe they can test it on their network.

Get wifi analyzer and see if you have good signal. I notice that the Wi-Fi graphic is conservative.
my RAZR was having trouble operating on WPA2-Personal secured wifi network.. so i changed the wifi settings to WPA-Personal with TKIP and the problems are gone so you might wanna try this before you RMA.
Mine had problems with dropped and weak signal which turns out to be because I had Bluetooth on as well. If I turn bluetooth off wifi works perfectly
My WiFi reception is appalling. It only see's my home network where as my three year old HTC Hero is seeing seven!
With my package I have the ability to connect to BT Openzone hotspots around the UK.
Not much use if you can't go more than 15ft from a router without the connection dropping!
Bluetooth is off and I have tried several WiFi analysers from the market, all show a very weak signal.

On mine, yes the wifi signal (bars) are showing less then with htc desire, but I can connect without problems even the router is on the second floor and I am siting on the first, so reachable from the whole house.
I do experience, that it takes a little bit longer to find the wifi as with the desire, but once connected, works just fine.
I do not experience problems with hidden networks. Mine is not broadcasting the id, still connection is stable.

The bars on mine seem less than what the signal actually is. I connect to my home wifi just fine, from all over the house. I also connect to work's wifi from what seems like the same distance as my previous phone (Dinc)
i'm using d-link dws-125 (usb router)
when i connect and start using internet, the network disconnects in a few seconds. then it connect again and the same... etc.
please, help!!!

The "single ball" is enough to achieve 10mbit at my place, however, I upgraded my firmware to OpenWRT and now I get two full lines and the "ball" in the bedroom.
Stock netgear firmware is.. Incomplete. :S

I have the same problem mine is a razr from france even if i use it in italy, i found that when haveing the phone in the hand the signal gets very worst, if i hold the phone from the edges not in the hand the signal is much better i gain two signal bars, the same happens if i left the phone on the desk, the signal gest very good, as soon as i take it in the hand the signal gets bad, a kind of antenna gete from iphone....

Had my One X+ for about 6 days now. Noticed that in parts of my home, had network connection issues where I never had them with any other devices. Dowloaded Wi-Fi Analyzer and SpeedTest. Downloaded SpeedTest on my old iPhone 4. And I confirmed that my phone has many more issues connecting in parts of the home than the iPhone. It's VERY erratic. You can put it on the counter 6 inches below where you were holding it with your hand, and wala, better signal. Pick it up and signal goes to crap. It's mainly with the 5.6ghz signal but 2.4 is effected to. Enabling / Disabling the Wi-Fi Performance Enhancement setting in Setting > Wi-Fi > Settings makes no difference that I can see and I compared it on and off several times using Wi-Fi Analyzer. This may be a dealbreaker for me on this phone. Maybe have to exchange it for an S3.
At times it loses connection briefly, then when it re-connects, signal is much better but it's not consistent. When running Speedtest on iPhone gauge usually goes up fairly smoothly and stays there (not always). On One X+ gauge gets "stuck" a lot more often and/or goes down.
I run an ASUS RT-56U router with latest firmware. Works excellent. It has my same network SSID bound to both 2.4 and 5.6Ghz channels. It's almost as if the One X+ has trouble dealing with a drop in the 5.6 and seamlessly moving everything to only 2.4? I actually tried to lock the phone to 2.4 or 5.6 in settings, frequency. It went crazy, both settings, it can't connecting and disconnecting.
Wondering if it is a hardware fault that was found in original One X that may have not been fixed?

If u got a problem with WiFi in certain areas of Your HOME i dont think its hardware problem. If u have a hardware problem Your WiFi couldnt recive more than "dot" signal even near router. Its because hardware issue was about antennas of WiFi (they were f****) To test hardware issue on HTC ONE X after squeze certain area of phone (antennas connected) signal growed up after release signal went down...
Looks like my hunch may be correct in that it has something to do with the phone switching between the 2.4Ghz and 5.6Ghz bands. 2.4Ghz has much better range. But in the wi-fi settings it is set to Auto frequency. What appears to be happening is that the phone prefers 5.6 but when it loses it, it switched to 2.4. I have a "dual band" N router so the same SSID is bound to both frequencies. I think this improves bandwidth for devices that communicate on both at same time (or is that not possible?) But I can't seem to get it to work if I change the frequency setting to anything but Auto. It won't authenticate when not on Auto! Bug?

I've been struggling with WiFi issues on my phone as well. Whether the phone is set to 2.4GHz, 5GHz or Auto, the connectivity is spotty at best.
With other devices in the house including my old Inspire 4g, a Kindle Fire and an iPhone I can get full reception but only 1 bar on the One X+ in spots. I have noticed that holding the phone upright in poor reception areas brings the connectivity up a bar or two usually but that's not optimal for usage... Same thing happened at the girlfriend's family's house yesterday and my connectivity was also progressively more spotty at work in the past week since getting the phone.
The screwy thing is it seems completely intermittent. It'll be fine for a few hours then suddenly the connectivity goes to crap. I'm pondering exchanging the phone for another just to see if the issues persist.
I spent much of Thanksgiving (sadly) testing the WiFi on this phone using WiFi Analyzer and speedtest at locations all over my house. I compared results with an iPhone 3GS Iphone 4 and Samsung Series 6 notebook. The One X (+) was terrible. At times it performed well but in the exact same location, the next time it would perform dismally. Very unpredictable and erratic and I found out why!
** THERE IS A 20+ dbm DROP IN SIGNAL WHEN HOLDING THE PHONE IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND! **
Now this may be common with a lot of phones, I don't know. But, the signal strength on this phone is already not what I would describe as "Best in Class" so this drop in many areas where the signal is moderately low to very low, holding the phone in the palm usually makes a difference as to if you have a usable connection or not!
I have a highly respected ASUS RT-56U router and made sure I had the latest firmware installed, but as I said, even the iPhone 3GS had more consistent, better, even results compared to this phone in many low signal areas when I held the One X in my hand. So it's not the router, it's the device.
Next step is to try to determine if it is this one phone, the One X+ AT&T model, and the One X AT&T model, or all One X models, including International? I will head to the store to see if they will let me run the test on another phone. I'm praying it is this particular phone but my gut tells me it is probably an issue in the design of the phone. I really like this phone but may have to go for the Samsung Galaxy SIII instead as this wifi issue is BAD, and unacceptable. Would get a Nexus 4 but I need more than 16GB of memory!!!!!

It would seem pointless now, since you are having the same issue, it seems to be an issue with the any One X+ (and I would bet also any One X). Maybe there's always a drop on any phone (iPhone there's no analyzer to show you signal). But this large 20-25 dBm drop make a difference between fast/normal browsing and slow/no browsing on the Net when sitting in many areas of my house. I would expect using it at other locations (on trips, etc.) it will drive me nuts. I do A LOT of browsing, use the phone like a mini tablet. So fast WiFi connectivity is paramount! I get better 4G LTE range/speeds than wifi in those areas of my house, but don't have unlimited data!
Sounds pretty simple, either u need a better router or u have a bunk phone. I have WiFi all over my house, my parents house, my work, all with zero issues and all obviously different routers. I'd maybe try another device. You have 14 days in the state's no questions asked for a new phone exchange.
It's not router. I went to AT&T store. Rep had S3. He loaded Wifi analyzer. We monitored same wifi network next shop down. HTC, signal dropped almost 20 dBM when you put it in your palm. S3, not change or 5 dBm at most. Loaded WiFi analyzer on X+ on display, but palm around it best I could around the display mount, big signal drop.
I have a large home. The thing is, no other devices have issues. What I suspect is with my home, certain areas push the HTC One X+ to its limit as far as wifi range. Most users don't notice "issues" as they don't lose a connection. And I didn't lose connection either, or rarely, just got really slow. You have to walk all around and look at WiFi Analyzer and compare holding fold to setting phone on table. Then also compare Speedtest.net app results. With S3 and notebook computer I'm getting 20mbit speeds in most areas, difficult areas, still has a consistent 6-8mbit speed. HTC One X+ those problem areas, 1mbit speeds if lucky or loss of connection.
Since nothing is changing in the test environment besides the device, the HTC clearly has poor wifi reception *RELATIVE* to other devices when held in palm of your hand. I found though you can get around this if you hold lower half of phone no issues and if you turn phone on its side, not as bad of a drop either.
I made it up to the AT&T store yesterday afternoon just to compare to another HOX+. Same thing was happening with the floor model of the phone. The manager went ahead and replaced my phone with a new one regardless just to cover our bases but like you said jazee, it does appear to be the radio location in the phone causing the issue. Just have to be conscientious of how I hold the phone.
To compensate I cranked up the TX power on my router a little bit which has helped. I run dd-wrt on it though so I have that option. Not sure what your firmware gives you access to in your Asus router. I have heard Padavan's custom firmware is a good option if you want to do more than what the stock firmware gives you access to.

Same WiFi issue
I'm having the same issue as jazee (OP). I browse on my WiFi and then when I click on a link, I just hold the phone in my fingertips (not palm) and the signal jumps up and page loads.
Assuming olorolo's on to something here and there is an app to fix it... I'm heading to the play store to see what I can find like "Keepalive" as recommended. This is my first foray into Android though, so I can't help but wonder if you guys are already ahead of me. Any luck yet fellas?
Yes if you hold phone below volume rocker, or sideways, or even in palm with right instead of left hand, you can mostly mitigate the signal drop.
I'm happier on S3 except having to go back to ICS 4.0.4 and wait for JB 4.1. No wifi issues, much better battery usage, and no could pegged at times by Beats trying to scan my 2800 mp3 files in the background for some reason. Could tell as HTC gets HOT and then battery plummets. Brand new phone. Maybe some issues to work out?
Oh and I love having 2GB Ram for multitasking better. Would have hot S3 initially if I realized US ver had 2GB ram like new Nexus 4.

I just so happened to have got my case in the mail today -- Ballistic SG -- and with it the WiFi drop is much less (more like 10dBm). I kept scanning with WiFi Analytics and no matter how I held it in my hands, I could never reproduce the -80dBm I was getting, no case, in the palm of my hand in the exact same spot.
For what it's worth anyway, it seems like the half centimeter of case is helping. I never would have noticed if I bought the case on day 1.
My i9205 have generally poor signal compared to my note1. It doesn't seem to make any difference to turn of LTD. I have not experienced any call dropping, only referring to the displayed signal. My note shows full signal while i9205 shows minimum signal. And in battery usage the "Cell Standby" is quite high and normally with 10-20% "Time without signal" even if I have not noticed any time without signal.
Anyone have similar issue ?
I have the Mega GT-I9200 and experience spotty signal as I drive around. I am on T-mobile in New York. Within a 15 mile radius in New York City my signal will fluctuate between HSPA+, Edge, G (1st generstion GPRS), and sometimes complete loss of both data and cellphone signal. I think the issue is I might need a modem to be ported from a t-mobile device to give me a consistent signal. Not sure if anyone could do that or if there's even a t-mobile device whose modem would be compatible at this point.

Yep! I'm definitely getting this too. The phone very rarely shows the full 4 bars of reception, and in low signal areas (1 bar or less) the phone starts flipping between GSM/WCDMA (UMTS) constantly, giving very poor reception. Also, signal strength in general isn't as good as my nexus 4 was. I sometimes am unable to reliably maintain a signal at all in areas that I know my N4 could reliably hold 1 bar of strength, with the phone disconnecting from the network completely and then reconnecting all the time.
As I'm in the UK and without LTE anyway, I've switched the phone to WCDMA mode only, which has helped though the phone now just flips between HSPA and HSPA+ when in poor signal. Its certainly much more usable this way at least.
On the upside, yesterday night with 3 bars reception I was consistently able to get over 15Mbps download, with my best result of nearly 19Mbps! So it doesn't look to be a hardware issue.
I'm speculating wildly here but to me this looks like a SW issue in one of two areas: signal strength isn't being reported correctly (too low), causing the phone to take action to try and obtain a better signal (by flipping to a lower bandwidth protocol or disconnecting and trying to detect a better macro, for instance) when it isn't really necessary OR maybe the phone is just too aggressive in switching from HSPA+ down to GSM to save battery.
Is there some way to take control of the mechanism, and try to force the phone to stay in hspa+, or to spoof a higher signal strength?
EDIT: This phone is packaged with very thin plastic wrapping over the metal band that runs around the circumference of the device. I accidentally left a lot of this wrapping on for the first few days. It may be complete crap, but I think my signal might have improved since I removed it all! I certainly seem to be able to maintain a connection in places that I wasn't able to last week, and maintain a constant (4-5Mbps) HSPA+ link in areas that I couldn't before...

I have the same encounter, I have two sim cards belong to the same number one for phone and one for tablet. The one in Mega 6.3 give me three bar signal but the one in Galaxy tab plus 7" give me four bar signal :crying:
I am also having reception issues with my mega 6.3 I get worst reception than any of my other phones sitting in the exact same spot. I am on ATT in the US. I removed all the plastic around the phone. I am wondering if it is my APN settings. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this or there is something eles going on.
The Mega has an issue with the radio. I bought two of these an i9200 and i9250. Both Mega's would lose signal completely. I don't have the greatest signal here at my home, but it has never been an issue with any other phone such as Note 1 and Note 2 and many others. If you are in a weak signal area more than not, you may wamt to hold off until the radio issue is resolved with software or whatever. They were unusable for me and I re-sold them.

I have an i9205 and it's fine with the signal. I'm in the UK though
The big problem about this is that the phone uses much more battery when signal is low and using 3G. I can get 6-7 hours screen on time on one charge while wifi is on. But when using 3G with low signal I get 3-4 hours.
I hope this is a radio firmware thing, and not a hardware thing, so that it could be improved with updates.

Same problem here with my new Mega 6.3! My phone have only 1 or 2 bars signals while my brother's Samsung Grand has full antenna easily. It's very annoying. What should we do?!

I found that all phone models are inconsistent in radio reception, not sure why...
Sometimes the updates can do a little better, but I believe the hardware is the most limiting factor.
Maybe Mega isn't for you where you live, just return it then get another phone
