Can someone show me how to flash a kernel? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Going to flash S8 from stock, but I have no idea how to flash the kernel first.
Here's the link to the kernel thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1289460
I don't even know which link is the kernel itself, so I figure I better ask for help.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281779

Thread moved from the Dev section to Q&A section.
My advice to the OP is that if you dont know how to flash, then dont. Read up first, and there is a lot to read... but its all good information on how to NOT mess up your device.
Also, if you want to flash S8, check out his site and his thread. Mikey steers his users in the right direction and makes a great rom.

I am using Mikey's instructions...I've flashed SVII before, but it didn't require flashing a kernel. I just want to make sure I do it right, but so far have not gotten an answer to this rather simple question. If anyone feels like spilling the beans before I just have to google it and go with some random's method, I'd like it alot.

Also. There is a FAQ thread that pretty much explains how to flash a kernel using Odin.
No extra thread needed.

entropy's post has several to choose from. they are all dated. the dates are the versioning (if you will)
how hard is it to click on one and download it? maybe the most recent one?
also, Entropy's kernels in that thread are for CWM, flashable just like any other CWM zip file
perhaps you need to read the FAQ thread and the HOW TO ROOT thread. this basic stuff is explained very well.

Latest Entropy kernel is DD_11132011.zip For future reference, the file names are based on the release date.

ok I DL'ed that zip file, and tried to flash w/ odin but it doesnt list it as a valid .tar file, and won't let me see it in the list of files I can choose from to flash
downloaded cwm, and flashed it with odin (the exact way I tried to flash the kernel, but this one actually shows up for use)
cwm is installed, moved the .zip to SD and installed with cwm, and nothing. Phone is not rooted and completely the same as before the install...
Not sure what to do at this point.....why didn't the kernel flash?
Should I just go ahead and try to flash the ROM?

From Stock:
1. Install Entropy512's kernel, found here.
2. Entropy512's kernel will give you root and CWM. Download Titanium Backup from the Market, and after allowing root permissions, back up your apps.

But I flashed the ROM with CWM anyway, and it worked. The phone is blazingly clean and fast and battery life has dramatically improved. Thanks everyone!

Anyone been able to root the UCLC2 leak?

So.. forgive my ignorance, but I installed the leaked update for the skyrocket last night and was able to just flash a cwm tar with only recovery in it and then superuser to root. I take it thats impossible with the i777?

Install Entropy's kernel with Odin, or Mobile Odin. He's posted his updates several times, but I don't remember where I saw them. You could just extract them from one of the Samsung ICS roms around here.
EDIT: Looks like recovery isn't possible with the leak, due to Entropy getting call audio to work before the leak. You'd have to stay with the stock leak kernel, which means Odin'ing back to stock, then cwm kernel, then nandroid restore if you want to get back. You could probably use Mobile Odin to load the back-to-stock + root package, and load a CWM kernel all in one flash . See the below, quoted post from him.

Source doesn't really matter - I9100 trees basically fully support I777 at this point, there is almost no difference. There's a good chance it'll mostly work, just like a single kernel worked for I777 and I9100 bases in the Gingerbread days.
However, call audio won't work though due to the libaudio workaround. I have no intention of turning this off or doing dual-builds with two different defconfigs for a leak. When official ICS comes around I'll look into other options.
Firmware developers could do a "reverse Hellraiser" with libaudio, but since there's no NFC I have no interest in the leak. UC bases suck - when ICS came out I was damn close to declaring UC bases supported for my Gingerbread kernel because only those on UC bases seemed to have stability problems starting with the I9100 update3 source merge (which made I9100 bases awesome.)

Just odin a kernel with CWM and then flash the rom task posted. It has both root and CWM. If you read up you would know this.

Ok, if you want to have a rooted version of the UCLC2 leak, here are the steps:
1. Download Odin on your PC.
2. Use it to flash back to stock. This will reset your bootloaders to the old ones.
3. If you use the ROM in that thread, it will already have root access. Download Mobile Odin from the Market.
4. Use Mobile Odin to flash a CWM enabled kernel.
5. Use CWM Recovery to flash the rooted UCLC2 leak.
Done. All this information was already posted before you posted in this thread; all you had to do was go find it.
Thanks for the tip. I had already tried those steps. The only thing I was doing wrong was that I wasn't wiping anything before I flashed thru odin. I was stuck with the Google app framework error. Thanks again.
Cheers.

Phone just freezes when I root it

Hi All.
I'm relatively new to all this so go easy on me.
I've got a Samsung Galaxy S2 on T Mobile.
Model Number: GT-I9100
Android Version: 4.0.3
Baseband Version: I9100XXLPQ
Kernel Version: 3.0.1 5-i9100XXLPQ-CL223505
Build Number: IML74K.XXLPQ
I've tried to root it using a method I found on here, I think it was by chainfire, the Odin app said it was a success but when the phone reboots it just freezes and doesnt go any further.
I want to have the cyanogenmod rom on my phone with it fully rooted.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have searched this forum for answers but its pretty vast.

That is a full firmware, not a kernel.
You said you used something from chainfire. If you can't tell us, perhaps a link to what you used would be helpful.

This is an insecure kernel for android build UMKK1, which is Gingerbread.
You have an XXLPQ build, which is ICS.
You need to use a kernel that is closer to your build. There is an LPQ kernel in the CF-root thread, flash that. (make sure to use the one labelled as "proper", it fixes some stuff)

Originally my phone had Gingerbread - which is why I used that kernel. However, I then thought it had rooted. So installed ICS. Downloaded Rom manager and it tells me my phone isnt rooted.
Should I still use that one?
Do I need to do anything after that?

Is the information in post 1 still accurate? Is that what is CURRENTLY on your phone? Then use the LPQ "proper" kernel in that thread I linked. Instructions are in post 1 of that same thread, but the short of it is: find the kernel that matches your build, and flash with Odin. (I already told you which one) That should be all you need to do. That will show the Triangle when you boot the phone, but if you don't care about that showing, then you're done.
So you're saying your reason for using the UMKK1 Gingerbread kernel was because you were PREVIOUSLY on Gingerbread? Well, you installed ICS. Your kernel changed along with it. You'd now have to use an ICS kernel to root ICS. Make sense?

Hi there, it rooted, so thanks for your help with that.
However, I tried installing cyanogenmod from the latest one listed in the Rom Manager. It downloaded, the phone re-booted into recovery. I deleted cache and data, then installed the zip file from sd card, however it came up that it had failed and was aborted.
So now it's rebooted and is back to 4.0.3 but with all my data gone.
Man this sucks.
Hope you can help mate

I don't use CyanogenMod, but I would avoid using ROM Manager if I were you. Why don't you just follow the instructions in the CM discussion thread? And which CM are you attempting to install? CM7, or CM9? (one is Gingerbread, and the other is ICS)
BTW - you would have had to delete all data, going to either version of CM anyways, as file system is a bit different between AOSP and Samsung based firmwares.

CM9 discussion thread. Has installation instructions in post 1, which don't involve using ROM Manager at all. As I said earlier, I'd avoid using ROM Manager; it often misbehaves on this device.
Here's some advice... even though I don't use CM (7 or 9), I found that that thread in 1 second by typing "cyanogenmod9 i9100 xda discussion thread" into Google. It was the first result that came up.
I know forum search sometimes is down, but I actually prefer to use Google for my searches anyways. You can even limit searches to a specific site by including "site:" followed by whatever site you are interested in limiting your search to.
For example, if I wanted to search the xda forums for i9100 rooting techniques, I'd Google:
site:forum.xda-developers.com i9100 rooting techniques
This will return a Google search for "i9100 rooting techniques" that are within the forum.xda-developers.com domain.
Rule #1 of the forum is to search before posting anyways... I know you're new to most of this, but you'll find people will tend to either not help or will be kind of mean if you post commonly asked questions.
Hope all this helps.

Boot to recovery. You'll know because CWM recovery has MANY more options than stock recovery. Stock recovery you can only wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache, and maybe a couple other options. I don't exactly remember, it's been so long since I've had stock recovery.

Anyways, I'd also advise you to follow the "noob-proof" installation instructions only on that CM9 discussion thread. It is the most straight-forward, and involves the fewest amount of steps.

No. Those would be for the GT-I9100 I believe. The kernels for the I777 will all be available in this forum, in the development section. You must use a Gingerbread kernel with a Gingerbread system, so when you are rooting with UCKH7, the two main custom kernels are linked in the guide. That would be Siyah, and Entropy512's daily driver. Either one will work fine to get you ClockworkMod Recovery. You'll probably be flashing a different kernel when you put on a new firmware anyway.

Use the Siyah kernel from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592228
It is the same kernel from the website you found, but adapted specifically for the I-777. There are two versions. For aberration i believe you need to install the version WITH micswap, but check the threads to make sure. If you are using it with another ROM, check the first post from the thread above, they list which versions you need for different roms.
One caution: some people have reported problems when installing v4 of the kernel immediately after flashing a new ROM. To avoid problems, Flash your rom, reboot the phone fully, then go back into CWM recovery and flash your kernel. Or, if you are not flashing a jellybean rom, you can just use version 3 of ktoonsez kernel instead of the version 4 beta, and avoid the problem altogether.
Edit: oops...seems creepy beat me to it. Just do whatever he said, he is one of the most knowledgeable people here

@bigote,
Maybe I misinterpreted your question, and wgoldfarb has it right, but just to be clear...
If you are rooting the phone with UCKH7 plus root from my guide, you will need to install a Gingerbread custom kernel to get ClockworkMod Recovery so that you can flash Aberration. In that case, DO NOT use this kernel since it is for ICS and will not boot when flashed with a UCKH7 system. Read and follow my previous post.
Once you have Aberration installed, then you can upgrade the kernel to the latest Siyah ICS kernel from this link.

Sorry, when i replied i had not yet seen creepy's post. As i said above, just follow what he said. To clarify my answer, i was assuming you were planning on rooting your phone following creepy's instructions, then install aberration, and THEN flash Siyah to use with aberration. In any case, if you are ever in doubt, you can never go wrong with creepy's answers.

Ok to be clear, I tried to root my phone, I did it actually from the galaxy2root.com, my wifi did not work and I "went back" to stock
now I have GB 2.3.4 (as always)
I777UCKK6
kernel version
2.6.35.7
GINGERBREAD.UCKH7
Now If I want to install aberration I should do it from here and then root the phone with Siyah?
aberration i777

hey nitin Buddy, I know this is not the right place to talk to you but please check you PM. I have PM you..
Sorry guys of this Off topic.
Yeah everything ok but why to flash CWM recovery?
How do I check I have proper working CWM as mentioned?
Because you need cwm to install a zip file to your phone.
If you have siyah running on your device, you have cwm recovery. Use that.

My model number is GT-I9100
Should I choose Galaxy S2 GT-I9100G or the Intl While selecting phone to install rom.
Can I install this ROM.please help
http://get.cm/get/jenkins/9838/cm-10-20121011-EXPERIMENTAL-i9100g-M2.zip
No. Like the link says, its a rom for the i9100G. Yours is the international version. You need to use a ROM that's built for your variant else you brick your phone. Use the search button and read ROM descriptions and instructions before installing.

Which link Do i have to select from this page http://www.get.cm/?device=i9100
Also since i have siyah kernel running , i can directly install Zip right?
Are you saying the cm10 thread doesnt have links or install instructions.
If you are lazy and cant follow simple instructions, then modding your phone isnt for you.
Havent you learned ANYTHING since the last time.
I hope you also appreciate the time Ive wasted posting in this thread and the effort I went to adding a pic to my sig..........for your benefit......lol.

The page has several Links ? I'm a noob who updates for better battery and just sticks to that ROM.
I'm also very conscious after reading a wrong file can brick the phone.

[Q] What kernel do I need?

I just successfully rooted my phone using the DooMLoRD method. I wan't to use a Jellybean custom rom(probably aokp). What kernel do I need? I have a Galaxy S2 with version 2.3.4 and gingerbread.uckh7.
You need one with cwm baked in. It's that simple. The rom you select will flash the recommended kernel

All roms will automatically flash an appropriate kernel.

Ok, but don't I need to backup my phone(contacts, apps, etc) with CWM recovery before I put a ROM on it? That would mean I need a CWM kernel right?

These are really basic and common questions that you are asking and can be easily found by searching. I'm just giving you a fair warning, because you will be flamed by others for not searching.
Creating backups via CWM is not a requirement to flash anything. It is highly recommended that you do create backups though (especially if you're new to this), in case something goes wrong while flashing stuff.

Thanks.
And with that, i will close this here, and advise further searching in the future (if you are willing to do something that can hose your phone, please take 10 minutes, and read the basic guides on what to do... it will be a life saver..)
