do I need the same tar and pit files with hiemdall that I needed for Odin?
ok I found where to put the pit file and maybe the tar file but not sure about that one. it doesn't recognize the vibrant on download mode.
any macheads here with experience using it?
I'm having trouble too

I've been trying to find a way to do this through xda, google, and youtube and I could find a tutorial or a how to. I tried playing around with it, but my mac isn't reading the vibrant for some reason. Help please
I recently switched from PC to Mac and have sort of been dreading the first time I'm forced to figure out Hiemdall. I do know that a few people here actually prefer it over Odin though.

Hahaha...Well said
if you get stuck you can always install a virtual desktop client on your mac like Vbox and run windows as xp is end of life install it and disable automatic updates and it wont tell you its a funky os copy.
then you can get odin if you prefer that.

So basically i have a BRAND NEW vibrant and i think i softbricked it. (i can still boot into STOCK recovery)
i was trying to flash voodoo lag fix using androidspins instructions but failed i guess... NOW my phone is somehow COMPLETELY stock... and it wont boot past the vibrant screen!
i REALLY need this to work, and im a super newb, so adb terms and things wont really make sense to me unless written step by step lol
PLEASE HELP ME! im on a mac mini running leopard 10.5.8 so i cant use odin or w/e its called.
oh ya and i have a nexus one so if it can help in any way in fixing this problem that may help too?
How long did you wait for it to boot? It can take a few mins. You should be able to fix this alot quicker by searching thru the voodoo thread. Also having a mac shouldn't prevent you from using odin

I'm a newb I have no idea what that means. Sorry that's why I need help. Any step by step instructions anyone can give???
Launch odin select the corresponding files then plug phone in to computer and put in download mode. When usb indicator on the top of odin lights up your good to go. To get into download mode I remove the sim card, sd card and the battery. I put the battery back in hold the vol up and down and then plug the usb in.
Search for the stock rom thread to get the odin files. There should be directions in there and in the bible thread as well.
Also if you haven't already you should install the android sdk for mac. Just google it
You have a vibrant its 99% unbrickable. Odin is your first problem. Recovery mode. Clear cache. Wipe user data. Reboot phone. Just a question why the hell are ppl still using Odin... makes me laugh.. I'm currently runny de-odexed 1.2ghz .. 2530 quadrant score my vibrant is so sexy I want to hump it. .. LOL

Cool story, bro. My 1.2ghz is sitting at 2743 quadrant guess I'm cooler than you. (Pst Quadrant dont mean anything).
ANYWAY back on topic, Since your on a mac you would need to run ODIN over parallels unless there is a mac version that I'm unaware of. Google parallels for mac, it allows you to run windows based programs on a mac. Then look at the ODIN threads in the bible stickied in this forum. Follow the instructions carefully and you'll be fine.
LOL.. hope it works out.. hate to see an awesome phone become a paper weight.
Gotta say xda is awesome

I'm guessing he tried to flash voodoo thru the update.zip method so unless he can push the stock update or what have you. Using recovery will only keep trying to re-install voodoo I'm guessing. So the best way to fix it is odin.

Wow, a LOT of misinformation here
First of all, you CANNOT run ODIN on Mac.

You CANNOT use ODIN via Parallels on Mac. You can install it and run it, but it will NOT recognize your Vibrant in Download mode which is necessary. I am not guessing, I know for a fact- I tried intensely for 3 days before learning that it's just not possible. And Parallels is a program that simulates a Windows machine on your Mac.
You COULD use ODIN on your Mac only if you run Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp. It's not a super-easy process if you aren't tech savvy, you also need to purchase (or otherwise obtain) a full version of Windows, so you're better off finding a real Windows computer. In case you're curious, additional info on Boot Camp http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

This poster = IDIOT. Wow, you're Quadrant score is so useful to know, very helpful for this guy, and I'm sure there are many who read your contribution and had to sit down in AWE to take in just how cool you and your Quadrant score are. Laughing because of ODIN? Well, Slick, it's gonna be necessary for this guy (and myself) to save our phones. Recovery> wipe data> wipe cache WILL NOT WORK at this point. Yes, the Vibrant is close to unbrickable- but not completely immune. Besides, this guy's Vibrant is soft-bricked, as is mine. Yes, it can happen, and yes, you need ODIN via true windows to fix. Go away and run some Quadrant tests.
Once you get in front of a Windows machine, here is a great step-by-step on how to fix your phone via ODIN http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475 I haven't done it yet, will be later today once I get in front of WIndows.
Android SDK and ADB will not help you at this point either, although they're great to learn for future Android fun.
Good luck- I know first hand how frustrating this is.
ok so is there ANY other way i can get this vibrant to boot? via adb or ANYTHING???
Easy way ....find a friend with windows
sorry about odin not working with a mac. Thought android sdk might load some usb drivers for you...saw that somewhere I think. However, according to lp1527 seems you will need windows or linux. Maybe you could try bootcamp with ubuntu since thats free.
Going out on limb but maybe using adb to remove the update.zip and replacing it with the stock update.zip and flashing that through recovery might work? or try to push the voodoo uninstall .txt first and see if does anything.

I had this same exact problem with mine. Use Odin (refer to Bible section if needed). Odin is very easy to use. Here's what you do:
1. Open Odin v.1.3
2. Download stock Odin stock firmware. This link is for the JI2 leaked release. if you want original JFD then do a search. This link has both the .tar ROM and 512 Pit file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780935
3. In Odin click on PIT button and open 512 pit file.
4. With your phone powered off and unplugged from pc, hold in both volume keys and then plug in the usb cord (whioch is already connected to your pc). After a few seconds your phone is in download mode (bright yellow on screen)
5. Check to make sure Odin has detected your phone by verify it has populated the port setting (towards the top in yellow) refer to Odin link in Bible page if unsure
6. Click on PDA and open the .tar ROM file
7. Click start
8. Sit back and wait to Odin to finish. It will reboot your phone automatically for you.

hey I installed the bionix 1.5 rom after i unistalled the one click lagfix. I went back to the bionix 1.4 rom and now I can't load any other roms or recoveries from clockwork and application storage available space is still 0. I know I could use odin to get the froyo that doesn't brick rom but I have a mac so I can't use odin. any suggestions?

A suggestion to realize your up against a brick wall that's more easily solved by using a windows machine and odin3. I know mac users don't want to hear this, and I'm not dumping mac hate on you here, but the fact is that Odin is a Windows application and probably the only way for you out of your mess.
There is an open source project for an Odin compatible firmware tool, Heimdall, but it's still in alpha at this stage and no source has been released yet. So, it's Odin3 or nothing at this point.
Best of luck

Thats the only thing about using ubuntu that gets a little rough is all these smaller programs are usually made for windows

thanks for the suggestion. i know macs do have their downfalls. the virtual machines look kinda complicated i might be better off just borrowing a friends computer.
Moved to the Q&A sub-forum.
The development sub-forum is for development only.
As far as Odin goes: Use a Virtual Machine with XP on it. XP SP3 doesn't require a key or to be activated for 30 days.
There was a replacement tool for Odin that was being worked on that was compatible with Linux and OS X but I don't know if it was ever finished.
I'm a mac user, and Kies is still in beta and can't perform updates, (its a pos anyways and I wanna refrain from using it either way).
So the only other alternative for Kies is Heimdall which is similar to Odin, but doesn't have much documentation for the newer version 1.3 other than the readme file that came with it that I have read but still am not confident enough to flash anything.
So can someone please write up a tutorial on how to use it or link me to one. I mainly only want to update my firmware keeping it stock and possibly root with CF-Root while I'm at it, if CF-Root is gonna even work with heimdall.
Thanks in advance.
This should cover it
Woaw. Thank you very much buddy ^_^
Not to hijack the OP's thread, but I have another and related question regarding Heimdall for mac:
When unraring archives either from Intratech or Samfirmware, all the extracted files are of the type .bin and/or .img. I really can't figure out how to get the proper .rfs files that should be used for flashing. Anyone able to show me in the right direction for the answer? I've searched up and down both on the forum and on Google
As of the time being I have a Bootcamp partition only for the sake of using Odin, and I would really like to have those 20GB's back as it should be unnecessary to use Odin in Windows when Heimdall looks like a great tool for the mac (when the proper files are used )

Heimdall should flash the .bin's or .img's, Heimdall should flash just about anything.
I dont have an OSX machine and havent had time to build a virtualbox img so i cant test
I tried to follow your instructions @veyka but heimdall won't work
When I try to get heimdall to detect my phone it just says "FRONTEND ERROR: Heimdall crashed!"
I tried uninstalling/reinstalling heimdall, still didn't work, then uninstalled Kies cuz it might be interfering but it still doesn't work!

Well, Im not sure, no one in that thread got it to work in the end, but I know people on linux who have flashed with it, and I have on windows so it should work!
Odin might be a iffy PoS but its a iffy PoS that works most of the time.
I've got Ubuntu Linux on an old ibm laptop, so I'll give it a try later.
And I only dream of using Odin but I don't have Windows unfortunately...
Hey guys, I landed myself in a soft brick yesterday and odin wasn't working for me (which was a first). Then someone suggested I use Heimdall and it worked perfect. It brought me back to stock and I tried flashing CM7 from there. Now I am back in a soft brick but Heimdall is no longer working (and now odin doesn't even see my phone even though its in dl mode)
Here is what happens with the Heimdall process:
Uploading kernel...
Kernel upload successful
uploading Modem... <(this makes it no farther than 15%)
Modem upload failed!
Ending session...
If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated!
If you get this fixed your may want to avoid CM7 / 9 or ICS for a while.
While flashing CM7 it may or may not have repartitioned your phone. The Heimdall error - is that from 1-Click or the full program?
Does Heimdall see the phone?
Maybe try the full Heimdall program with stock and repartition. Also try Odin again but on a different computer.
I had in instance where I couldn't get into Recovery - I had the ! sign. Odin didn't see the phone but Heimdall did. 1-Click error so I fired up the full Heimdall program and just flash a new kernel. Then restarted in recovery and went from there.
Yet another reason I stay with Froyo / GB and not CM7/9 or ICS. I want to keep a stock style of partition setup and avoid repartitioning the phone all the time.
I am using the one from the link you gave me here: http://www.filereactor.com/zcl1dy7zl...Click.jar.html
Where can I find the full version? NVM I found it my only question now is which files should I use for the flash? The same as what I would use with odin?
Also yeah tried different comps for odin... same thing :/ but heimdall can see it just fine
"I had in instance where I couldn't get into Recovery - I had the ! sign. Odin didn't see the phone but Heimdall did. 1-Click error" <<< Thats exactly where Im at
On a side note: I just said that same thing... after I get it back I'm done with this phone lol I'm sticking with my HTC's... I've NEVER had so many problems in my life, no I remember why I stopped updating my vibrant 6 months ago LOL!

Yeah you can but you'll need the real version, and I'm pretty sure the new one is based on packages, so you may want to get the command line version.
Paraphrasing of course:
Code:
heimdall flash --kernel zImage --cache cache.rfs
--dbdata dbdata.rfs --param param.lfs
--factoryfs factoryfs.rfs
When you say full version are you talking about this?
http://i.imgur.com/CFAaH.png
http://i.imgur.com/apm5G.png
also would you know where I can get the stock firmware other than sammobile?
It may have loaded a kernel for you via heimdall. Can you get to Recovery?
Im at work and cant check but - I think the Odin .tar package is just the Heimdall individual packages. Extract the odin image. You will also need the 512 pit file.
Heimdall should have come with instructions. That front end you will prob be working with the 2nd tab since you dont have a full Heimdall package.
Edit:
Also look for difference Odin versions. Sound silly but some folks got an older version to work.
I recently bought a SGT 10.1 GT-P7510 on Craigslist. The tab was rooted and running the inFamous ROM 1.9.1 from AOKP. Worked great for a few days. One day, I turned it on and the wifi wouldn't turn on. At all. I'm brand new to Android, so after reading through forums and mucking about a bit, I tried a few things and ended up doing a factory reset. No dice. The wifi still wouldn't turn on. I gave it to a friend who's more experienced.
I got it back and now the OS won't boot at all. Upon startup, it just shows the Galaxy Tab 10.1 logo. When I hold the power to turn it off, it turns back on after about 3 seconds. I can still boot into Recovery and Download mode. Attached are some pictures of what I found in recovery mode:
Essentially, it looks like the internal sd card got formatted and wiped clean. There's nothing in that directory (or any other directory, for that matter). I'm thinking the tablet is completely empty, save some form of BIOS. Also, I can mount everything EXCEPT the SD card. That option doesn't change when selected
Is there anyway I can get any kind of OS back on here? I don't care if it's the original Honeycomb that came with it or the inFamous rom that was on there when I bought it. I'm just wondering if it can be salvaged or if it's bricked beyond belief.
I'm on a Mac running OS X 10.7, so I can't use Odin. I've tried my hand at Heimdall, but I can't find any firmware that'll load properly (keep getting an error message that the .tar file is the wrong size). Can anyone help me get this thing running again? It would be very much appreciated.

Thanks so much for all your help. Unfortunately, I'm still having trouble with Heimdall. Whenever I try to load the firmware package, an error pops up saying "firmware.xml is missing from package." I'm guessing that this firmware isn't Heimdall friendly, or vice-versa. Any advice on how to circumvent this error?

Here is the link I meant to give ya... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348392 .. If the answer to heimdall errors isn't in there.. I have no idea... Set up a VM and use Odin..
Update:
I could never get Heimdall to read the .tar file and could need figure where to put what where. I guess I'm using a different version or am not tech savvy enough to understand what/how I'm doing wrong (which is a high possibility). I took it to my parents and loaded Odin using windows 7. Got the PIT file from a forum here and used the link to download stock firmware for 4.0.4. Ran Odin and it worked like a charm! My tab is running Samsung's stock 4.0.4 seamlessly, and my wifi is once again working. So much trouble over a small radio, but it is integral to the entire point and function of any tablet.
Thanks to everyone that sen in advice! I'm loading Virtualbox on my Mac tomorrow and using an extra key for Windows from my folks. Next step: rooting, setting up CW recovery, and booting Infamous AOKP 4.2!
