I'm getting extremely frustrated with the glitch that we all see on a daily basis: quick locking/unlocking of the phone will yield the unlocked screen followed by the lockscreen. How has this not yet been fixed by Google? Does anyone have a workaround? So stupid and unprofessional. It makes me sad :-(
What?

Lock your phone then immediately press the lock button again to get to lockscreen. Tell me you don't see the previous screen for a split second before the lockscreen shows up.

That's BS. It happens almost every time and on every Android device. It's not long at all, but there's no way that every time you try a speedy lock/unlock that you don't get a glimpse of what's hiding behind the lockscreen. It's the same thing with apps that have lockscreen widgets (like PowerAMP). Sometimes I'll get a glimpse of the stock lockscreen and then the PowerAMP lockscreen widget will show up.
Android seems to have a serious issue dealing with sleep mode and knowing what to do on wake.
well... it doesnt happen on my sgs2, my missus' sgs2 or on my asus transformer.
Whats the big deal anyway?
Try calming down and chilling out..... its only a phone.

I can GUARANTEE that it happens on your S2. It happened on my HTC Magic, N1 and my current SGS2. Maybe you don't notice it, but it's definitely there. I'm uploading a video now to demonstrate what I mean, including the PowerAMP issue.
FirstNoobToBrickHisPhone said:
Yeah, it happens. But I don't see it as a security flaw, sure for a split second you can access an unlocked screen but after that the pattern lock comes up followed by my widgetlocker screen
This does need to be fixed I agree.

Thanks for the USEFUL response! I don't see it as a security flaw either, just a massive unprofessional bug. TBH, it's things like this that are the reason why the iPhone is seen to be smoother and more polished. I don't have an iPhone, so I can't ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEE, but I'm pretty damn sure that something like this would never happen. And don't get my started on "only 1 phone to test on"; this has happened on ever Android device I have owned.
As you can see above, the issue is definitely there. Even if it is for a SPLIT second, it still happens and it shouldn't. And the issue with the PowerAMP lockscreen delaying for nearly 3 seconds should NEVER happen. Hell, I just tried it 15 times straight on my 2nd generation iPod touch, and it didn't happen once.
Honestly, if it takes Android purportedly DELAYING the screen wake by a second just to ensure that this doesn't happen, it's worth it IMO.
I see it when the phone has locked itself but not when I lock it using the power button.
I wonder if because the screen is off before actually locking the new lockscreen is not displayed until the screen is turned back on.
Agree it looks like sh1t when it does it.

I think he just means the "iPhone is better" war.
Not doing it here on KI8. I flashed and did a factory reset, wiped the dalvik cache and re-installed my apps and theres not a single glimpse of the screen under the lock screen.
I use a screen lock widget to turn off and lock the screen and the centre button to wake up the phone.
Trust me when i say it isn't happening on mine, it has done it previously and that's why i started using Widget Locker instead...

i just spent the last 15 minutes trying this out on my KI3 custom ROM...not happening, goes straight to the lock screen (believe me, im anal about things...)
I think it depends whats on the phone, what settings are used, the kernel etc...
As its something we DONT all suffer from, will you change the thread title?
And you're following along exactly with how I'm describing? Immediate lock and unlock?
And anyway, I'm talking about STOCK Android without any "help". WidgetLocker/custom ROM isn't stock.

Yes me too, I have nearly burned my fingers off swiping my screen, and power button off. No problems with my K14 stock rom.
Maybe you need to clean up the App Cache, and use a memory booster as well?
Just a thought!
Sorry dont do split seconds .

it does happen for me as well.. but yes only a split second.. i just lived with it.. think of it as a "feature" lol
I agree it happens on every android phone....heck its android lol! When i think of android i think of bugs lol. Again its very minor but u want see it on a apple device. Still love my SGS2 to biiits

This irks me greatly, since it seems to have gotten worse on KI3. Has currently annoyed me to the point of trying a stack of different ROMs to see if any of them are better. CM7 is - shame it's not quite at a daily driver level yet.
I am either returning my Prime today or trading it for another (one more time). I have had to exchange at best buy a couple of times due to the horrible screen tearing on the first one in gallery, camera and several other apps. Second prime the bottom of the screen died in less than 3 days and would never come back. Factory reset/ cold boot/ soft boot/ you name it. So now im on my third prime and i am still getting artifacts on my home screen and other apps. I have done the whole factory rest, install from sd, cold boot, soft boot, and nothing will stop this dang artifacting. Is this a common problem with the prime and i should expect it from ALL primes, or am i a victim of bad luck and should try another prime? If the majority has issues with this, i am returning it, but if the majority never experiences it i would love to exchange it and get a good working tab that i can keep. Not to keen on anything else until the S4 Krait hits tabs.
thanks for as many replies as possible as i hope to get a good number of responses so i can determine if its a flaw in all primes or just the ones i have had the fortune of using.
Thanks for your time!
Edit, here is a test that anyone with the app can try and reproduce.
C4 Here and have them happen sporadically and easily produced in several apps and launcher. Beautiful widgets is the easiest. I have been wanting someone to test this but haven't had any luck. Just set the beautiful widget forecast (last widget in the list of BW's) on any screen. tap the widget to access the animated graphics. If you location does not have the moving clouds change it to San Diego as it has been cloudy here for a couple of weeks. While the clouds are moving click either the clock or the recent apps button and usually within seconds you will start getting severe artifacts. I have been able to reproduce this on every prime i have gotten my hands on. I also get screen tearing/flickering in androbench pretty regularly but it is different than the artifact. My first prime, before i had it replaced suffered horribly from the left hand side of the screen turning static in camera and other apps. After that replacement my prime and those i have access to suffer the artifacts on .28 in several apps. Someone please try the BW scenario to a tee and give it about 30 seconds at most and see if you receive the artifacts.
I can't blame the BW app though as i have it happen more randomly in several apps, its just that i can reproduce it easily with the BW animation.
Added a poll just for stats.

mine stopped for now. ever since I did a manual reinstallation of the firmware & did a full wipe, only saw it 2 times on random occasions. Gone after a reboot.
p/s : b4 reinstallation & wipe, reboot wouldnt solve a thing. the damn problem sticks around

Thanks! That is exactly what i am after, just some confirmation that it is a wide spread issue. I hate being picky, but my unit gets them pretty bad and i am holding out hopes that this doesn't affect all primes. Im gonna update the OP with a test if anyone else that reads this can try. It almost always forces screen artifacts that can't be reproduced on any of my other ICS tabs or phones.
Thanks again!
Also, i did the whole factory reset, installed via sd, hard boot, soft boot, and nothing gets rid of them...

This issue is a Graphics Driver Issue (I'm 99% Sure). It was almost gone in .21 (I never had it). The graphic drivers was cleaned up in this latest patch, and after that some users have been having this issue.
It's just a buggy driver / incompatibility with some apps.

not really. I had it maybe once or twice. it was either from an update or overclocking. the home screen icon and recent apps looked like it was glitching. I rebooted the prime n never seen it again. I wouldn't call that a display issue. Only a 1 time thing. never had anything like you described where bottom of screen or whatever died out on me.
Overall, I've been very satisfied with my prime display. its been performing fine for me. very responsive.

That gives me hope, I wonder if i should try replacing the one i have once more. The screen tearing is the only think keeping this from being a perfect pad for me. I get the tearing in androbench, my home screen, weather forecast and even when unlocking my prime. Also, after following your recommendations on improving performance, all i can say is wow, made it a new machine (-minus the screen artifacts that have always been there even on .21.) So, in your opinion, do you think i have a lemon and my problem is specific to my prime and should replace it? or do you think this is a common problem and should just return it?
Was very curious and decided to check it myself, but sorry mate, I wasn't able to reproduce it on beautifull widget. DO you have another app I could try to reproduce the issue ?

I have the same problem with Apex Launcher the left side of the screen starts to glitch and the only solution is to restart. It goes away for some time but after a while it comes back. I figured it's a software issue and just stopped using apex launcher. I'm curious if the problem is still there with some of the non-stock roms, but if it's the graphics driver I presume it's there ... Let's hope that with the next update things are going to be better.

It only does it for me if the weather forecast is cloudy.( which it has been here lately) lol. Change your location to Miami or San Diego as they are having some bad/cloudy weather. Once you have a location set with "mostly cloudy" conditions, watch how choppy the clouds move when you click on the widget for the forecast. While the clouds are scrolling, open settings by clicking the clock in the lower corner, let it expand, and just wait. Within seconds my screen will start artifacting all over the place.
Also, thanks and thanked!
Have a BCOKA unit purchased in Dec 2011 (received in Jan) and have never experienced any sort of screen artifacts or tearing. BW weather forecast screen has been showing clouds flowing across the screen for 15 minutes now and still going smoothly.
I've never had tearing or artifacts and I have an old Prime (BCOKAS arrive Dec. 27th, 2011).
I did have all the blacks on my screen turn red (search for my thread) and had to RMA for that to get fixed but it turned out to be a hardware problem and Asus replaced my main board. I don't think this is a problemwith all Primes though. Maybe you'll get a better one this time. Good luck man.
The screen tearing is not the Prime's hardware - it's Asus and their incompetence in putting out decent firmwares. I can just about guarantee this is the situation. I had my Prime since launch. It had terrible screen tearing when I first got it. One of their early firmware updates just about completely solved the issue, and it was working great all the way through .21. Then, as soon as I installed the .28 update, the screen tearing and artifacting came back again. So like I said, it's definitely not a faulty prime (hardware wise). I'd suggest either keeping your Prime and waiting for an update that fixes this, or just returning it and getting another tablet.
As for some of the other issues caused by Asus using a garbage LCD, such as LCD mura (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1550530), screen bleeding, and dead/stuck pixels, that's another story.

I tried your BW test. the animations look and move great on my prime. I let it sit and no screen artifacts turned up. I did see in the options for BW that it said animations were an experimental feature and could cause possible issues. but none on mines though.
as for your situation, I'm not sure. I would say try exchanging again. but I'm starting to think if its maybe an app or combo of apps you have that's causing this. so this happens randomly, no matter what you are doing or app you're using? or is this only occurring when using certain apps or whatever? its kinda sounding like its your apps. did your prime do this immediately out the box brand new? or did this only start occurring after you installed certain apps or Widgets?
just curious, you don't have force gpu on in developer options, do you? that has caused similar issues before.
like previous poster said, I think this is a software issue. which will be solved through an update. maybe even try a manual install of update through Asus website. its a more thorough install.
After .28 I had some of this but none since words with friends put out the update. No doubt a combination of running processes, video drivers and in my case ezoverclock.
Not all Prime have this issue... however, there are enough that DO have this issue.
Just return the device.... don't decide based on what the "future" update will do.. or hopefully will do.
Don't even bother taking a chance.

Glad you are helping so here are the steps i have taken. I do a lot of research before i post as to limit the amount of time i need to take up. I too thought the app was an incompatibility until i went through the process of removing and formatting my SD card and placing the update zip from ASUS. Booted into what i would call bootloader and factory reset my prime. Once booted, i inserted the sdcard and the went through the upgrade process. Once done i skipped login and allowed the system to settle and then did a hard reboot followed by a soft reboot. I then choose to not restore my apps and only downloaded the BW widget. once opened and set to a location where it was cloudy, clicked the settings launcher and expanded by clicking the clock, which left the animation in the background and within 10- 15 seconds the artifacts became worse and worse. Entire sections of the screen would turn white or green for a split second. I removed the app and downloaded other apps one at a time and found that i would get the same flicker/glitch when using androbench. Also had and issue, when using the gallery, that the screen started scrolling white horizontal lines and slowed to a halt before rebooting. I recently had to travel to San Diego for a week, (poor me) and had my girlfriend go by BB and outright buy another tablet and as i couldn't trust the one i had and figured i would return whichever one worked (Money isn't an issue, just want this prime's display to behave.) Well, as soon as i unboxed it, logged in, allowed it to update, downloaded BW as a test and guess what, same flicker. Granted neither of these had the issues the first two Primes i had to exchange had, when half or most of the screen either went to static or completely quit responding/working.
Now to the interesting part. Both Primes in my possession when i returned home i could test further. I went through the same process of manually wiping, wiping, updating, HB/SB, FR yada yada and only installed the BW app and both Primes behaved the exact same way. As soon as i would expand the recent apps or settings overlay the screen would start to produce odd geometric shapes and would continue every few seconds (the flash is noticeable but quick). Now some good news. The prime i currently have was kept for a few reasons. THE GPS WORKS WELL!!! I have no issues with WIFI, 3/4 bars from70 ft connected to a Cisco 1262. Streaming Netflix with a set of slim JB Bluetooth headsets is a breeze. All of my games (Nova 3, Adrenaline6, Gun Bros, and multiple others play wonderfully and i can honestly say i have never had a game reset/ act funny/ or ANR. My browser would occasionally ANR but it wasn't too bad. The Prime i bought in San Diego would not get a gps signal sitting beside the prime i kept that was getting 10 satellites. Wifi on one prime was -84 in a location that my current prime gets a -66 with a 72Mbps connection. Games would force close on the other prime, Browser would just randomly close. SOD EVERY MORNING. So needless to say i returned it and kept the current one i have. I have tested all i know to test, and no, i don't have force gpu ticked. I have worked with Android for a while and have a Xoom running EOS that doesn't suffer any of the mentioned problems. (one heck of a tablet i might add). But as someone who travels a lot, and the work i do, this can be my laptop replacement.
So all in all i have a tablet that works wonderfully in every area except the fact that it will (at will) artifact/tear using BW animation. It will randomly artifact using Androbench, gallery, camera, quadrant, and both stock launcher and apex pro. Last and notable thing is it seems to do it less if i set the brightness to a static level, say 50%. All of this happens/ bone stock/ root/ no root. Currently running root with your build.prop, the atp app, and sio and this guy is rocking a lot better in the user experience (I/O)
Sorry for the rant, just giving all the info i have. No noob here and wish i could just unlock it and dive into it but cant do it as i don't know if it is hardware.
Thanks for all of the opinions and as soon as my thanking well replenishes i will thank those that i missed!

Bro, i know you have told me that and my gut says that what i should do as i have kinda been asking this same question in some of the other threads. Thought i would quit hi-jacking and create a post to just see how wide spread this is. I mean dang, i am on my 4th prim in exactly 30 days and only one of them functioned above 75 percent of expected performance. So scared that if i replace it again, i will be out of a 499 tablet as i will likely target practice with it with my 45. lol. Seriously though, i believe you got it right, too many of them have this problem. Sucky thing is i can seem to find an alternative that has what a really want, an S4 krait or a exynos quad and the same docking alternative that the prime has.
So you think there are primes out there that wouldn't have the screen issues i am having? I know i don't think anyone has said they have never experienced it.
Was this a problem when it was on GingerBread?
Thanks,
I just came back from Warped Tour and I'm checking out the videos I recorded...these videos are actually legit. The quality looks damn good and the sound is ****in sick. Another stock user.
This is finally a phone that I have no problem running stock. I have gotten used to the 3 dot menu bar, which will be fixed in an update soon anyway. Everything is just great. Using the OG Evo stock on Froyo was a terrible experience because the battery life was horrendous. The Evo 3D was laggy and also had poor battery life. But this phone... this phone is smooth and lasts long. Everything about it is just... good.
Until a JB ROM is available, I probably won't root.
Problems with stock:
* google wallet doesn't work
* tapping an address in a web page almost never brings up the maps app like it always does on og evo, instead it brings up the web google maps which is slow and battery killer
* phone numbers and addresses are generally less often automatically recognized than they were on the og evo. I often have to manually copy, home, open other app, paste
* the browser search/address bar doesn't clear itself when you want to enter something new. You have to backspace through a zillion character long url and query string, or long-press until the edit panel comes up, choose select-all, then choose cut, THEN you can finally type in you're web site or search term. Or you can set your home page to google and keep going menu->home. This was somehow never a problem on the og evo.
* multiple actions popup menu on a detected structure disabled thanks to Apple. If you tap on a phone number, you don't get a useful "dial, add to contacts, share, copy, etc" menu. Instead it just dials.
* menu button. Saying it will be fixed is meaningless. So many things were never fixed for the entire lives of so many phones and other devices. My $2000 Sony Vaio P still has no workable video driver, not even for windows let alone linux, and the thing is completely obsolete by now. Htc could fix the menu button ONLY by faking a hardware menu button which they may not even be able to do because Google probably has to vet the os and they won't ok that as it's opposite of ics policy. App developers are supposed to update their apps. Htc can't update everyone elses apps. So the menu button is here to stay.
* multitasking. Apps restart instead of resuming, web pages load and render from scratch just because you had to switch to some other app for a second. This _could_ be taken as a normal compromise for a tiny handheld computer, except we've all already owned phones, even old ones from years ago with much less ram and much less cpu that did a lot better. Even iphones are better. Og evo was better. Palm Pre was better. Palm Treo was better!
* you have a dual-core cpu, but you're only using one core. No performance or on-demand option, no option to use both cores when plugged in (better car/navigation, faster syncing or backups while docked, etc)
And of course there are the hardware / firmware problems that doesn't matter if you're stock or not:
* wifi hand-off bug
* cell radio low signal and inconsistent signal
* no extra capacity battery possible since no removable battery or replaceable battery cover. I have to carry around a mophie juice pack and a usb cable! Sooo elegant and portable!

This is one of those posts where I'm confused...I don't actually know what you're trying to gain from it...Do you want me to root? I'll root when I'm good and ready...right now I'm enjoying this phone and my stock experience. Just came back from an iPhone and I'm just happy to be back with Android. I have no desire to root because there's nothing wrong with stock. The problems you pointed out aren't even really problems...and if small things like the ones you mentioned are enough to tip you over...then idk how you'll ever be happy. Just enjoy the phone

* wifi hand-off bug
* cell radio low signal and inconsistent signal
* no extra capacity battery possible since no removable battery or replaceable battery cover. I have to carry around a mophie juice pack and a usb cable! Sooo elegant and portable!

About half of those issues are still there after you root ..but I still love her for some reason..Although I am starting to wanna use aosp more and more everyday.and I used to be a sense guy all the way..I just feel that stock has become more elegant than it used to be and sense is starting to remove essential functionality from android ie multitasking that should be no issue on a phone of this caliber..and I wish sense was as smooth as tw..but tw is an ugly stepsister to sense

nothing that wont be fixed with development.
My main reason for not enjoying this phone is that any time I play a game or watch you tube for a while Sense has to reload a lot when going back to the home screen.
Also after installing or updating apps the phone tends to get really bogged down for 15-20 seconds..Im just coming to the realization that Sense(although slimmed down) is still a fat ***** that causes more bad then good.

Bro- THANK YOU. I've been meaning to put something to that effect for two.weeks but hammered home(far more succinctly and lucid than I would) every issue I have . Of all of those I think the rerendering when you come off an app then return to it-however brief it just shouldn't happen at this point. I'm not trying to gain anything, or rather, what were you trying to "gain" from your original post?
I don't care what you do or don't do.
You basically said "everything is fine" and pointed out a few reasons why you think so. And I said "no it's not" and pointed out a few reasons why I don't think so. It's called discussion.
I agree the phone is more or less functional and usable out of the box. So what? If that is good enough for you then I submit you have low standards and are possibly bad at math because you can get that for a lot cheaper than this phone with a much better actual phone since even the cheapest dumbphone has a pretty good working cell radio, you know, being it's primary reason for existing and all.
I have the capacity to be laid back and not sweat things I can't change just as you seem to. That's a great virtue to have. Congratulations. But I personally paid full out of pocket price for a lot more than the basics. Of course I know early adopters suffer the shakedown period. That in no way excuses HTC, because, this thing was not sold to us as a beta test unit. It was sold as a product. They are obligated to deliver that product.
Saying everything is great, when it's not, doesn't help anyone. It doesn't get problems fixed, it doesn't let HTC and Sprint know they are failing to deliver and pissing off customers.
As for being laid back, well hell why do you assume I'm not? This is just a web forum post man not some major part of my life. I'm on vacation in Key West if you must know, idly killing time playing with my phone because that's what Key West is about, just chilling and hanging out by the pool. or the beach. or Willie T's on Duval st. My girl is in the pool chatting with the other guests in the pool and none of us has a lick of clothes on. You see it's possible to recognize something needs a lot of improvement, and care about it, _even_ while at the same time recognizing it's place in the grand scheme.
Caring about things in general has an important, a very important place in the grand scheme. At the moment it's this phone. But it's not that this phone litterally itself is so important.
Enjoy your phone if you do.
But if you ask why everyone seems to have complaints, there are reasons. Beleive it or not, it's not just because everyone is just that ridiculously anal.

I just got back from Key West! What in the world hotel are you at though? Didn't see any clothing optional ones, haha. Only saw the clothing optional bar (Garden of Eden) over on Duval. Nice relaxing place, Key West is. Spent 5 days there. We stayed at The Inn at Key West, which has the largest pool on the island. It was pretty awesome.

So I got my DNA on Sunday. So far, I'm pretty happy with it except for one issue. My multitouch seems messed up. If I'm trying to play a game that requires both thumbs, basically the two of them tapping the screen interfere with one another. For example, if I'm playing something like shadowgun, or GTA III, or max payne, or even the preinstalled diablo clone, if I'm moving a character and try to press an attack button at the same time(or in the case of GTA trying to actually steer while driving) the character movement "stick" resets to neutral. and sometimes the reverse will happen. Trying to move will cause the attack button to stop registering. The issue has been "confirmed" by me with multitouch visible test found in the play store. In the test, moving my thumbs around and making them cross axis screws up the touch registering. could anyone confirm or deny that this is happening on their device? Games are basically unplayable. I went into a VZW store today(the only one in my are with the phone in stock) and tried their demo unit and it exhibited the same problem. I was then promptly told by the sales rep that the one device they had was being held for a paid order. Nevermind the fact that I was told over the phone minutes before that the one phone was available and that they DO NOT hold devices for customers. A call to corporate may be in order... Anyway, any thoughts on the multitouch "issue" would be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried turning off HTC gestures in Settings -> Display & Gestures? I think the 3 finger swipe for HTC Media Link messes with multi touch
Generally speaking any issues with multitouch are software related. The sensors should be fine its a matter of callibration based on the software. Like the previous poster said it may be due to sense's gesture features. New kernels when they are released will likely fix this but I have never experiencedit. Gonna have to try and reproduce this today.
I've also noticed plenty of issues with multi touch. I've noticed while browsing, if I'm holding the phone with two hands and any portion of my one hand is touching the screen and I'm trying to scroll it won't respond till I remove that skin that is making contact.

I'm pretty sure every phone is like that.
I believe it is the game/app software related. I don't think a lot of them are set up to recognize the larger 5.0"+ screens running resolutions over 720p. We are kinda treading new territory here. I have heard of a few games that don't display correctly on our phones so I don't doubt controls/multi-touch could need some tweaking as well.
I may be wrong but that is my opinion.

More than a few games simply do not work. Its annoying and I may return the DNA for that reason.

Are you becoming part of the "Now" generation that I saw you complain about in another thread?
Games will begin working once app developers start updating for 1080p screens.

No, LOL.
But I have seen these things before, where developers catch up 6 months later. A lot of the games I want to play are Gameloft or EA, and they both are terrible at updating. Horn hasn't been updated since September.
In that case, I can come back in 6 months with a newer device and will be content.
I am definitely patient, and can live with the Gnex a bit longer if I decide to go that route.
Thanks for the replies. I did try turning off HTC gestures last night with no success. I'll have to figure out a way to post a video of it. Basically, in the multitouch test app, If i hold the phone in landscape, as if I'm playing a game, then place both thumbs in the lower corners, it registers fine. However, if I slowly move my left thumb up and down then repeatedly tap the right corner(an action commonly performed in 3D action games) it trips it up and starts reversing the thumb inputs and occasionally introducing a third input even though I only have two fingers on screen. I can't believe that it's just an issue with software, or I'd assume reviews would have pointed to it. It makes games basically unplayable. And I've seen video online of people playing those types of games on the phone without the issue. A video would help. I'll try to figure something out.
Its been like that for some time the phones capability is more than the multi tasking allows I got 7 apps at once any load after that it won't show in recent. Though its slightly better with the app refresh upon switch its much better than my previous HTC the EVO LTE . Still when we got aosp based roms it was much better but with no limit or more on that device it slowed a lot but two gigs in this is great.

So I've "solved" the issue. I actually swapped it out for another phone and then it worked fine and I was happy. Then I re installed holo locker from the play store and started having the same issue. So holo locker WILL break the multi touch capabilities of the DNA. I just e-mailed the dev and hopefully get a response. So again, for anyone using the phone, DO NOT INSTALL HOLO LOCKER. At least not until it's updated.
Look I'm sorry if I broke one of the 500 rules here, I am just desperately in search of help.
I have been a smart phone owner since 2009. I bought an iphone 3. I upgraded to a 3gs eventually, then last summer got my first note.
I went through five iphones because I kept sending them back due to various issues. I thought Android would be great and fix all my issues, but honestly I hate my phone and I just want a smartphone that works. Like I said I bought my first one in 2009 and I have just been trying to have a fully functional smartphone ever since and it is something I have never gotten to experience. Four years! Jesus, I just want one that works and doesn't give me random issues everytime I try to use it.
So my note is running android 4.0.4 I am going to list various issues I am having with it in the next post. I would do it in this post but I had it all typed up then this page just turned blank and I lost what I typed. I have no idea why.
Please keep in mind I have owned five Notes. I have sent them back for various issues, but these problems have persisted across all of them.
1. If I am using a web browser in landscape mode and go about ten seconds without touching the screen or buttons, the right side of the screen flashes black repeatedly.
2. When I use the default audio player the last song I picked automatically starts playing. It used to not autostart the music. How can I disable this?
3. When I am in an app and press home, sometimes after the app minimizes it comes right back up instead of going to the home screen. Why?
4. How come sometimes when I go to unlock my phone, the clock is in the middle instead of the top, which is what I have it set to?
5. When I attempt to download an image off the internet through any of the five browsers I have installed about 50% of the time the download fails regardless of 4G or wifi connection strength. How can I fix this?
6. Sometimes when I click a link on a webpage, the page jumps to another part of the webpage and activates a random link from that area. Wtf?
7. If I close every running app, disable every unrequired service and turn my screen brightness down all the way, I cannot use my browser and charge my phone at the same time without the battery draining quicker than it charges. How can I browse the web and charge my battery at the same time?
8. If I click up by issue #5 or #6 to edit something, this website scrolls the edit box all the way up to the top. The only way I can get back down to where I am typing this is to drag the text selection tool. Kind of annoying.
9. My lock screen setting is set to auto lock after ten minutes because I prefer to manually lock my phone when I'm done using it, not use auto lock. When I get a phone call this setting is overidden and the screen locks after ten seconds of inactivity following a phone call. How can I get my phone to always respect the value I selected for that setting rather than some of the time?
10. the default camera app has an option to set custom shortcuts. This is a useful feature. However every time I exit the application the shortcuts are reset to default, making that feature worthless. How can I set custom shortcuts permanently?
What's the common denominator among all these devices(ip*/sammy)?

Ok I hate to be the one to say this but you will never find anything that will not have random issues. This is the way of smartphones. While One device may run perfectly the same device and the same OS version will have random issues.
Also might want to look into something called a logcat. It will help you find the issues you see

They all feel like a waste of money?
let me see if I can either answer or help you clarify what's needed to solve these issues.
First are you stock unrooted? running a custom rom? Rooted?
(each of the following number correlate with the issues you listed):
1) Stock web browser or all of the one's you've tried? By flashes black, does half the screen start flashing black then back to what's being displayed quickly?
2) the playing the last song if I recall is a restart "function" that the player does, check in the settings for that. Maybe someone else can answer this as I don't use my phone as an MP3 player, just pandora.
3) I've had this happen from time to time with my phone as well. I've noticed that it happens with memory intensive programs. I just hit the home button again. Don't know what to tell you there
4) Are you referring to the clock on your lock screen or status bar?
5) Is this issue one specific image? is it from one given website? have you tried dolphin browser? I can tell you that it does work on my phone from google front page.
6) This happens to me as well, it's annoying and I feel your pain. It happens to me when I go to click a link when I have my keyboard open which resizes and moves the webpage and then activates the click in the new location. Is this similar to your issue?
7) Are you using the charger that came with the phone or a charger that pipes 1A to the device for charging? a lot of chargers our there will only do 500mA and a lot of cables will limit the charging to speed to 500mA because they aren't shorted for full power charging. Though someone should correct me if I'm wrong here.
8) Editing likes to jump around, mainly due to what I mentioned in response to 6 because it closes and reopens the keyboard. Again that's from my experience. this has been limited when I moved to swiftkey and a JB rom.
9) I have no clue about this one. and have no idea what to tell you. I'd say play in the settings for this one.

You kindly asked for help, so I’ll kindly try my best.
1. I have NEVER heard of anything like this. So you say this happened on different Notes? That is akward. I wonder if a different dpi setting will cure this for ya. If your rooted you can install xposed and change individual app dpi’s This will also aid in resolving your #8 issue.
2. This is a normal setting in default audio players. I suggest GoneMad audio player. It has TONS of features and device controls to solve this for ya.
3. I noticed this problem once before. I believe it’s an animation lag. I never seen it happen if I turn off transition animations. Try that and repost back.
4. This sounds like a governor issue. The cpu frequency drops when phone is locked. When it wakes up it lags and the clock doesn’t pop back to where it’s suppose to be. I notice this a LOT when I rotate from portrait to landscape while lockscreen is up.
5. When your image downloads fail, what’s going on with the phone? Same with when they do download. Is anything else running? Is screen locked at all during the download?
6. I notice this happening with different individual webpages. Sometimes a webpage will have an advertisement that slowly loads at the top or side. When it does eventually load the screen elongates which moves the spot we were on. But of course this always happens right when we’re clicking a link! Could this possibly be what’s happening to you?
7. Are you using the stock supplied usb cable and charger plug? Aftermarket chargers have different output voltages. If your using a cheapO it will only charge when not doing anything. And even then it’s still slow to charge!
8. Our phones aren’t the greatest for typing LONG paragraphs or replies. I changed my keyboard dpi so it’s a lil smaller. It gave me more room in landscape mode to see what’s above and I can scroll thru what I wrote easier. That’s not a perfect solution but it helps!
9. I believe this problem is a default security issue. I remember reading somewhere that a phone is set to lock after a phone call because our face could be touching it and press something it shouldn’t. Also that if you were to give your phone to someone to make a phone call having the phone unlocked could be a security breach to you. When you think about it for a second it’s not a bad feature afterall! I’ve given my phone to a coworker during a call and I wouldn’t want him playing with my phone for a second! But when the boss is on the phone with me and wants to talk to whom I’m standing beside I let him! Your problem could be solved with a newer release of JellyBean. I notice a setting in my phone that says "Exit to last activity on end call" which will allow phone to exit to the previous activity screen on end call rather than going to call log and locking.
10. This problem makes me think that you might of tweeked something you shouldn’t of. Why else would an app not remember it’s settings you stored? If it’s not a tweek issue, you can try installing a different camera app. There’s literally 100’s!
Sorry if those responses are of no help. I’m no expert they are just my thoughts on your issues. Good luck!

I have been a smart phone owner since 2009. I bought an iphone 3. I upgraded to a 3gs eventually, then last summer got my first note.<br />
<br />
Four years! Jesus, I just want one that works and doesn't give me random issues everytime I try to use it.<br />
<br />
So my note is running android 4.0.4 I am going to list various issues I am having with it in the next post. I would do it in this post but I had it all typed up then this page just turned blank and I lost what I typed. I have no idea why.

Ok I hate to be the one to say this but you will never find anything that will not have random issues. This is the way of smartphones. While One device may run perfectly the same device and the same OS version will have random issues.<br />
<br />

Also might want to look into something called a logcat. It will help you find the issues you see

I cannot express how much I ****ing hate this piece of ****. That is not what I expect when an OS is advertised as having true multitasking. What garbage.
stock unrooted.
Flashes in every browser ive tried.
That music app never did that before and there is no option to chsnge it. i am not interested in replacing the app, i want to know how i can change the behavior back to how it was.
4. lock screen. setting stays the same (top) but when i go to unlock the phone sometimes its at the top something the middle. im just wondering why.
5. any website any browser any connection. I can be in a ****ing att store using their hotspot trying to download the google.com logo and it works half the time if that.
6. i dont know it just raneomly jumps around and clicks ****.
7. i am using the chargers that came with my phone. i cannot use my browser with all other apps closed and screen brightness cranked all the way down while my phone is plugged in and have the battery even stay level much less charge. my battery drops 10% if i look at my ****ing phone. i already got a second battery from att and this is the fifth note ive had too.
its so ****ing frustrating how there is no answers for anything at all. im just venting in general. i really, really appreciate people like you trying to take the time to help me out...but at the end of the day i have ****ing nothing at all to go on. i never ever find a solution to anything. everyone always says oh just try a different app or att is all well just send you a new phone. for ****s sake i just want the phone i use and the apps i use to ****ing work. ****.

let me see if I can either answer or help you clarify what's needed to solve these issues.

OP you went through five iphones and five notes?
I don't think the phone is the problem.

no worries I completely understand the pain of having an issue and feeling like I'm the only one EVER to deal with it.
SO don't hate me for these next set of recommendations, it's just all part of the troubleshooting process. What I would do is a full factory reset. I mean wipe everything, and I do mean everything because I'm almost suspecting it could be a rogue app causing at least some of your issues. I believe you can revert all the way back to GB (someone will correct me if I'm wrong, it is the internet after all). then without installing anything at all try the stock web browser see if it still flashes and jumps around. If it does well it's what some Microsoft programs like to call a "feature". as for your power consumption issue. try installing this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manor.currentwidget&hl=en . it isn't perfectly accurate, but it should tell you close to what your amperage that's going into your phone, which should be around 1000ma (or 1A). I know the issue you're referring to and it happens to me when I use the GPS on my truck using my truck adapter which is only 500mA. battery just drops and drops and drops.
After you've done all that and still don't have the desired results, flash ICS and try again.
Lastly I hate the browsing system on these phones as well. you can clearly tell it's a simulated multitasking system and it won't even load multiple pages at the same time and if you switch between the tabs it'll refresh the page and redownload it. Annoying as crap especially when you're trying to watch some pr0n. But it is much better than on my ipod touch so I deal with it. Where I guess I differ from a lot of people who buys this phone is I think of it as a place to get my emails, phone calls and look something up to prove something wrong. I don't feel a smartphone has really become a laptop or netbook replacement yet.
I hope these steps help. If all else fails and you're still having issues, maybe this phone just won't do what you want it to do. I know, I know that a phone should do what it advertises but when it doesn't live up to it, it's time to step to a different device. The S4 was just released and the HTC One is supposed to be a smokin phone too. And with the documented cases of issues you've been having I bet they'd be more than happy to get you to a different device without having to pay full price.
Again I hope these help.

Well explain how this happens:
- Three iphones in a row had an issue with getting dust under the screen. At the time I had an office job, so the phone saw clean slacks pockets and my desk at home, nothing else. The first time it happened they did a screen replacement first and the problem persisted. I never exposed them to extreme environments, never dropped them, nothing.
-I have had the audio port on my Note fail on three different Notes. I use headphones maybe once or twice a week, and when I drive I sometimes plug it up to my tape adapter. They are never subjected to unreasonable force, I never jam the plug in there or anything etc.
-I have had iphones and Notes run at about 30-50% overall speed as the others I have tried, when they are 100% fresh straight from the factory and have not had a single 3rd party app installed or anything.
-I have PC components from the 80's, a circa 2000 HDD based MP3 player from iriver I even used while skateboarding, an original NES and gameboy, the original Razor and countless other electronic devices that have performed flawlessly in the time that I have owned them.
Seriously, explain to me how it is my fault that all five galaxy notes I have tried fail to download a simple image file no matter how good my connection is.
Explain to me why every email application I have used on any smartphone, ios or droid, is so ****ing slow that after hitting refresh inbox I can switch to my browser, open my email providers page, type in my login infox and open my mailbox quicker than the app. Explain why its my fault I can refresh my inbox when I expect mail, see nothing, refresh it again immediately, then have it download five emails from an hour ago. What did I do wrong?
Explain to me why a week ago my phone decided I can't upload images due to "insufficient memory" despite having changed no settings, added no new apps etc. Explain to me what else I can do after resetting the phone, deleting chromes cache, manually stopping and disabling every non essential app that was running, clearing all running processes, clearing ram and resizing the photo. Explain to me why after all that I still cannot upload that photo with Chrome or any other browser, but I can intentionally run as many apps as I can at once, then upload the full size, unedited photo with an imgur app and it goes through no problem. How is that my fault?
How is it my fault that my battery dropped 5% in the time it took me to type this with screen brightness cranked to a minimum, no other apps running, wifi bluetooth and gps disabled and my phone plugged in to a known good outlet with factory wdapters? How is this my fault that I cannot use my phone and charge it at the same time?
How is it my fault that the camera app will not keep my shortcuts?
How is it my fault that a week ago, my music playing application decided to do the following: I pick x song off y album and let it play through a few songs. Q song, the fifth one in the album, is currently playing. I decide I want to listen to another artist. I unlock my phone and go back to the app while the song is still playing. As soon as I open the app it stops the current song and restarts the last song I opened, closing out song Q for song X. It never did that before. I changed no settings. What did I do wrong?
I have a total of maybe five apps I've even downloaded since getting this phone. A 1mb< notepad app, chrome, a sketchbook program and pdanet. All except the last were straight from googles store.
I just dont know. I feel like I paid 500$ for pure, condensed frustration that fits conveniently into my pocket. Every other electronic device I own does what it is supposed to. My PS3 doesnt decide to just stop working. My Wii is a tank. My car is a champ. My digital cameras are workhorses. What is so difficult about obtaining a functional smartphone?
I am A+ and Network+ certified. I know the basically means jack ****, but I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to electronics. I know how to take care of them, I know how to teoubleshoot. I built my first PC before my voice cracked. When I try to troubleshoot my phone I feel less productive than if I were to bang my head against a wall.

As an A+ certified tech myself, you should know there is nothing like wiping the hard drive and starting over fresh.
The previous poster walks you through to factory reset the device, which is what I would recommend as well.
When wiping select factory data reset and wipe the cache too.
This will erase the internal SD card contents. Transfer that stuff over to external SD if you need it.
Set it up. Give it a couple reboots.
Computers and phones are different beasts. As I have incorporated the latter more into my business as of recent.
Hey boneless, I'm sorry to have offended you. Remember, I don't know anything about your background or your technical skills. I don't know how high your expectations of electronics are. So please, no offence intended. I'm just passing on my observation in an open forum.
If you want to blow off steam, go ahead. And I hope some of the suggestions help.
