Regardless of any calibration method i try, i can never get an accurate battery reading. (Before i continue, ill point out that every app ive used to check my battery health has said "good")
Ive tried calibrating with/without the calibration app. Ive tried just deleting the batterystats via rootexplorer. ive tried calibrating before/after cycling. nothing seems to work.
the reason i know its not working, is because i will calibrate/cycle. lets say ill start a day with 100%. ill unplug my phone, leave for work, and use my phone moderately to feel out the battery drain. then at some point, ill plug it into my charger at work......just now, for example, after three hours of use my phone went from 100%-71%....i went to charge it, and once i plugged it in my percentage display changed from 71% to 63%!!! my percentage will constantly jump up and down throughout the day when i plug/unplug my phone.
anyone else experience this?
PS - its not ROM or kernel, its been happening to me for the last 2-3 months...ive flashed several roms/kernels in that timespan, and have ODINed at least once.
PPS - Ill also add that when i unplug my phone to start my day (after its been charging all night), it will stay at 100% for about 30-45min, at which point it will then start draining on an average of 1%/10min. i feel this may have something to do with it.....does it have something to do with me calibrating at too high of a voltage??
Well as for your inaccurate battery readings, i would suggest that you to odin back to stock and. Leave the phone to charge for 4hours(the time my phone takes to charge from 0-100%)then use the battery calibration app or wipe battery stats via cwm. And as for the draining it might be corrected after you calibrate it.
I know this coz I have experienced this in the past and i'd lose around 1% every 20-25mins now.

Call T-Mo and tell them and get a new battery.... they WILL give you one.
the best way to calibrate ur phone and its worked perfect for me. Charge it to 100% and then unplug it and as soon as unplug it go to sgs tools and run apply script and inside apply script there is delete battery stats. Click on that and it will take less then 10 sec and ur battery will be running great. Now this works great on my phone i hope it works on urs nicely.
At your PPS: This is completely normal and expected battery behaviour. It SHOULD happen. Here is why

As for your plug/unplug deviations...I have seen those but it has rarely been more than 2-3% difference which is around the normal range. It sounds like a bad calibration issue to me but then again I can't be sure, especially if you said you have done a calibration correctly. You can try a new battery like the poster above me suggests.

So if i clearly state in the OP that it was happening to me before and after ive ODINed, and someone says you should ODIN...thats not a lazy suggestion?
or if someone says to try calibrating, when I stated several times in the OP that ive tried multiple calibration methods...thats not a lazy suggestion?
What i expect is if ive pointed out that ive already taken troubleshooting steps, then dont suggest those troubleshooting steps. no one is forcing a response, so if you dont know, simply dont answer. dont just read the title, skim the post, and give programmed suggestions.
theres absolutely nothing wrong with trying to seek out answers other than the conventional ones. ODIN and reflash are the laziest responses......granted, they will often fix problems, but there may be other ways to solve certain issues.
The goal of my OP was to see if anyone else had experienced it, and if someone responded affirmatively, i would ask them about their calibration methods and we could brainstorm. I would much rather seek out problem-solving knowledge before resorting to ODIN/reflash/new battery/new device...which teach nothing.

This is typically the method i use. i usually let it charge for an hour or so beyond when it reaches 100%, just to ensure i have a full charge. this has not worked for me. i also take it a step further and let my phone discharge all the way until it dies, let it charge overnight when powered off, then ill wipe the battery stats first thing when i wake up.

this was an extremely informative read. it doesnt shed light on all of my problems...but it definitely explains the longer battery life upon unplugging in the morning. my only question is how am i getting that extra juice when im not actually "bump charging"...i just plug it in when i go to bed, and unplug it when i wake up.....maybe my phone doesnt stop sucking in a charge the moment it hits 100%?
i agree with what he says about not paying too much attention to your battery.....but when its bouncing up and down by 20% increments, thats cause for concern haha. im going to calibrate one more time tonight, and i i get similar results i will swap batteries with another vibrant user.
do you guys suggest deep cycling, before or after wiping battery stats? (or should i just wipe stats at a full charge, and not deep cycle at all) >>> there seems to be different opinions on deep cycling throughout XDA
I have had a similar issue. After flashing Roms, plyugging and unplugging it was jumping by a good 10-15%. This turned out to be a simple bad calibration. Normal jumping should be up to 2%, more than that usually indicates bad calibration. Granted, normally nowdays, mine does not jump at all.
I recommend cycling it fully empty. That means, go ahead and drain to 0. Then let it shut off. Then turn it on again. Keep turning it on till it STOPs being able to turn on. Then charge it completely. Don't charge overnight as that will charge to 90-95% as the article suggested. Charge it while you're awake so you see when it hits 100%. It's even preffered if you charged it while the phone is off. After it hits 100%, give it another hour on the charger. You can even bump charge to ensure it hits full charge. To bump charge, after it's full, disconnect and reconnect the charger every 20 minutes for that last hour you're charging. Then unplug it, boot into recovery using the 3 buttons. Wipe the battery stats from there. Boot normally into your ROM. See if it is still jumping by 20%. Worst case scenario should be a 5% jump. Let us know what happens.
^ See, there is my confusion... there is a great example of how to calibrate, but the OP seems to get in a tiffy for offering up a suggestion he has done (calibrating). I'd also be cautious about the bump charging as that will really hurt the battery. I'm not one to try and get something for free, but why not just get a new battery?

I support the new battery notion too. It's FREE.
Drain your phone til its dead.... charge it up full.... run a battery calibration app on the market and let it die fully again then charge to 100 percent one last time... good to go!
You might even try using a differnet battery

Topshelf, I have run into these problems, There are a couple of things that cause the battery to be wonky.
1st Samsung has the battery set not to 100% but actually less (95-98%) so when it is charged and reads 100% as soon as you unplug you get a immediate reading of 95-98% (nice huh?)
The dev/mods, and others have tried to rectify this. No one has found an exact fix for this. On thing I have found that does help is to charge to 100% then unplug and then plug into the computer and recharge back to 100% (the lower milliamp off the computer seems to allow you to get to a higher percentage). Then calibrate. Now when you do that the battery calibration/battery widget/and phone All will read more close (for me +/-3%). This is one of the issues you raised.
The other is the battery drain, with some of the custom roms the gallery seems to one of the culprits, mms sometimes stays on with others and some others that are in TSR but instead of being asleep they are taking resources.
I have used systems panel to trouble shoot and that has helped me. I think you may want to ask Explodingboy70, Roman or whitehawkx, they know more on this and maybe can help.

PS the mv setting for the battery is supposed to be 4200mv mine never gets above 4196mv

Well you can just charge your phone to 100% and then delete the batterystats.bin file via Root Explorer or boot into cwm and go to advance-delete batterystats.
That helps you and your system to get a more accurate reading.
Other option is to "bump" charge your phone, let it charge till 100%, wait one hour (while charging). Unplug phone and turn off, plugin in charger again and charge for another hour. Turn on phone and delete batterystats.bin. Bump charging isnt healthy for your battery tho and just gives a temporary effect of "better" battery life.

As the battery stats are a system file then no as you dont want to mess with system files you say .
Battery stats if left alone will reset within a few weeks of use anyway .
The majority are not programmers we just follow the instructions .

i dont see a reason why would i want to delete this file, as my phone is just 1 week old and i thought there are some calibrations need to be done when you get the phone..
i assume what you guys are suggestions is some periodic treatment to do to the phone after few weeks/months i already have it?
if so, again, as my phone is new - is there anything i should do to the battery?

No charge it use it dont let it fully discharge .

BUT the wifi was on the whole time, would that be the reason?
any possible way to determine whats preventing the phone from sleeping?

It depends on what apps you use. For instance IM applications keep the phone alive, while the screen sleeps.

WiFi could be on always but not Awake, so some apps/process must be going on in background, to find what it is,

after i recharge the battery overnight i boot into cwm recovery and delete the battery stats.
but what about if you have 2 different batteries (original samsung) and use them alternate after one battery is fully discharged.
do i need to obbey anything different ?

Imo, you will get false readings everytime you will change the battery.
there's no solution for synchronising it or i.e. calibrating the battery1 and then changing somtime to battery2, then you'll get wrong information from the system about the charge of the battery, because it's calibrated to battery1, okay but if you then change back to battery1, the system info about the charge of battery1 should be fine... hope you understand what i want to explain

From yesterday i started facing a strange issue due to which i am experiencing serious battery draining issues.
My battery started draining 1-2% every 5 min in idle mode after i played a game named crazy fist . next day i factory resetted my phone. In idle now it is not consuming any power but when i do some work on my phone , it consumes alot of battery and it.drins like 1% every 2-2.5 min.
Charging time is normal. But discharge is pretty fast.
So i checked thr battery usage inside settings.and noticed that my display is consuming about 41% of the battery and android os arnd 13%. I am not sure qbout os usage but thr diaplay is consuming too much power. I think initially it used to consume 13-20(max)%.
Or is the usage correct? I am using sgs2 stock midel and have no intentions to root it.

the display on the galaxy s2 does drain alot of battery if your using it for quite a while..thats what they call screen on time..my battery was draining fast and i panicked... when you do use your phone how long do you use it? say do you use to browse like for a good hour non stop?

i thought the same as you buddy. never realised it in the start when i had my s2 but then checking the battery usage and i panicked...its normal for the display to drain the battery alot..
change your brightness to auto and there is an option in settings and display where you can tick to have the display autoadjusted. thats for brightness..
or do what i do and have your brightness on the lowest settings and see how it goes from there...fully charge your battery let it say for 6 hours then let it drain till it dies down without any breaks and then charge it again to the max..do the same thing for a few times and check whats the battery after a few days...

when calibrated your phone you leave it on of course and charge it without any interuptions...when you let it drain with out any breaks like switching it on and off, once it dies down then plug to charge it.....it will charge and it will give you the battery icon...once its fully charged you can see by the battery when its fully green switch your phone and your good to go...

hey buddy sorry for the late reply..go to market and download the battery calibration app by Nema..once you installed it charge your phone fully go into the app and just follow the instructions and then you should be fully calibrated..
but download the app first

I have a stock rom. and i dont want to change the rom before my warranty period gets over.
Install BetterBatteryStats from the Android Marketplace. Run it and see if there is/are any app(s) gone rogue abusing CPU power other than the display.

I have a problem with battery :
Every morning, after booting, my phone was powered off over all the night, I can see my battery decreasing by 10%!!!! And I sometimes notice after few minutes that it increases itself bit by bit...
I've already did a battery calibration, but not after flashing the new Siyah' 2.0 kernel.
This is very annoying, and makes me wondering if I should recalibrate or what...???
BTW, the question is : HOW ?
Some say you have first delete batterstats, power off, then full charge.
Others say you have to power off, full charge, manually delete batterstats.bin, or use Battery Calibration App.
What is the f*** best way to calibrate our battery ?
I'm really pissed off loosing 10% battery with my phone powered off every morning...

Using Revolution 2.7.1 ROM with SiyahKernel v2.0
This might just be the ramblings of a mad man, but I have been thinking lots lately about battery calibration on the sgs2.
Normally on most android phones the power off charge is completely independent from the rom so that if you charge when powered off you know it is really a full charge, not controlled by pre-logged battery stats, you can then wipe the stats and get a better idea of what "full" is when you are powered on.
On the SGS2 the charge when powered off is still controlled by the rom (see the app "no moar powah" for an example of this), therefore it may still be under the control of the same battery stats so may not indeed charge any more than what the rom thinks is full when you are powered on.

the best thing you can try is to run the battery flat, charge while off, wipe battery stats anyway and hope for the best.
Will try it again ....
Maybe should I flash another rom after full wipe, or stick to a stock one.
I can't imagine that my battery is defected yet !

My first current conclusion :
The best way to calibrate your f*** battery is definitely to do it manually.
Just delete batterystats.bin in data/system, after full charging (with Rootexplorer or another app)
Then, use it until to 90%, and full charging.
That's all ATM.

Is that the same as doing it through Clockworkmod advanced/wipe battery stats?
It is normally the same thing, I prefer IMO to do it manually.
Just trust yourself
My tab's battery dischargs normaly untill 50% then drops down to 2% and i do belive that its a software problem because the tab will continue working for another 5 hours but you cant raise the brightness or use the camera :banghead:

Have you tried to wiping the battery stats while fully charged and still on AC as suggested here:

Tried, but did not help, I even tried to charge it off to the most can not, but it did not help.
It is possible that you could have over discharged your battery at some point. If calibrating and the thread mentioned above did not do the trick, you may have a damaged lithium cell. Over discharging can cause weird things to happen to batteries often leading to their failure. Or, you could simply have a faulty battery, or even worse... failing hardware.
I'm not trying to scare you, I just thought this information might be useful to this thread. I hope you get it all resolved.

I agree. It sounds like a damaged battery. Have any of you ever drained your battery completely dead? If yes and you've done so often, you most likely damaged your battery. Lithium batteries should never be completely drained.

What ICS ROM are you running? Is it the OTA update for non-rooted tabs, or are you rooted and flashed one of the custom ICS ROMS? I agree with others that it sounds like a battery issue, but knowing which ROM you are running would be helpful.
It's an official ics but from diffrent region " i dont think it matters " ,, also i dont think my battery is dead because when it goes to 2% it stays like thaypt for hours of using, but when it was normal 2% lasts for less than half an hour

I'm not sure it is related to ICS... I got the same problem with HC a few months ago
