Hi
I just bought a brand new Tmobile Galaxy S II and am trying to root it. I am pushing volume down + home + power but it won't go into download mode. It just goes into the normal boot sequence as if I am turning the phone on normally. The buttons all work individually. Has something changed with the sequence?
Nothing has changed, you can try to enter download mode with a jig... There are several manuals how to build one its easy and you can't do anything wrong..

I just discovered that although Tmobile calls this the Galaxy S2, its a different model! Its actually a SGH-T989D. Thanks

Whats wrong: My dad rooted his Galaxy s2 and I showed him how to use titanium to delete unwanted apps. He went on a frenzy and now the phone doesn't boot pass the samsung screen. Also it doesn't turn off unless I take the battery out. He said he might have deleted the twlauncher.
Things I've tried:
Plugging it in = computer doesn't see it but it does charge.
putting it in recovery mode = I did the 'push volume up + home +power' it just kept turning on.
finding other threads and failed miserably.
Things I know about droid.
I've only rooted my own phone, galaxy s 4g to delete unwanted apps myself. So I'm pretty noobie. Please help me >.<
Jig is what you need. Search it on eBay.

If you can put it in download mode, volume down, menu and power, and connect with odin you can try and flash the original stock rom then root again

I can't get it into anything its just stuck.
Is there any other way instead of getting a jig?
As you say that you can power on the phone, then getting into download mode using the power, home and volume down combo is a real possibility, as your dad probably would not have screwed around with any of the partition files (Unless you did while rooting ).
Anyways it is a known fact that the phone can be a little stubborn getting into download mode. Try removing the batter for a few minutes, reinserting and then using the combo.
Generally a jig will work only you are able to get into download mode i.e the phone is soft bricked.
Keep trying, if nothing works, choose between the jig and the service centre.
Best of luck
EDIT: What galaxy s2 version is it? Plus have you installed the necessary drivers (by installing kies) before using ODIN? You also have to kill all kies processes while using ODIN.
I recently got a S2 gt-i9100 which was O2 uk branded.
I debranded it with I9100XXKL1_I9100OXAKL1 which went smoothly.
Ever since then this seems to be the only firmware the phone will accept.
I9100XXLPQ (Official Final Build) just hangs at the boot screen, I9100XWKJ1_I9100O2UKJ1 (the original o2 firmware) loops. and other firmwares do the same.
Is there a way around this, is it something I've done wrong.
Please, any help would be appreciated as I'm pulling my hair out with this thing.
Try do this with the official final build but i ain't sure if it is going to work out ..but its worth trying put ua phone into recovery mode & do a clean wipe / factory reset & wipe cache
Then reboot
This is how to put you Galaxy S II into Recovery Mode:
1. Turn off your Galaxy S II phone.
2. Now hold the Volume Up + Home + Power buttons of your Galaxy S2 smartphone until the Samsung logo comes up.
3. When you see the Samsung logo; quickly release the buttons for half a second and then hold them again.
Now your Galaxy S II will boot into its Recovery mode.
Use the volume keys to navigate and the home button to make your selection.
Just done that but Whilst I was there I noticed my csc code was KOR, so I have changed it to CPW. I'll see if that makes a difference.
Edit...
Still not installing ICS
Hasn't anyone else came across this peoblem before, or even have a clue what it could be
Hi!
When I was at work today, I had the phone in my pocket, when i took the phone out of my pocket, the phone wouldn't boot properly - it is stucked on Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300. Tried to press both volume up, home and power on at the same time, and held it there for over 10 sec..
It's stock android, with no root.. Any solutions out there for this problem?
Thanks for all help on beforehand!
Best regards,
DanVazz
Try entering download mode (volume down+power+home key)
If you can enter download mode, you can flash a stock firmware....

i had the same problem and the only way to get it to work again is to send it for repair.
there is something wrong with your original software and only a samsung repair station can get it to work again.
Stock firmware with Odin
Try to flash a stock firmware with Odin.
Here is a tutorial including the last stock 4.1.2 (I9300XXELL5):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
search for sudden death s3 and half sudden death s3.
some earlier models were shiped with bad flash memory. if flashing via odin won't work, send it to repair, they will change the mainboard.

Well, I have the same device, and the same problem, i can't get to the download mode no matter what i try, i practically tried all the combination that there is, when i try RECOVERY mode, i get the dead android, the phone boots but I can't unlock the screen ( my kid tried too many combinations) the wifi is not on to try the google account thingy, the debugging mode is not on, so i can't try with the ADB too. i'm really desperate, seems like nothing is working for this phone.
If anyone can help, please !!
Check this out.Probably it works with Galaxy S Duos as well.

thank you for your quick reply,
i have already tried all these combinations though, and none of them is working :/ i'm quite familiar with rooting and flashing roms, I don't usually have problems with it, but Samsung phones seem to often have that problem, especially accessing the recovery or the download mode, i'm really lost here, can't find any solutions or help so far ! seems to me like this phone is screwed ! is it ?
Alright, so if I turn on my S3, it shows the Samsung logo, then freezes at the "Samsung galaxy S3" Other logo. I've tried to put it into recovery mode and I can't move anything with the volume buttons, I know the volume Up button works but it isn't moving anything. i also tried putting it into download mode but the down volume button doesn't work. Any solutions? Or is it impossible to fix? Thanks in advance for the replies.
You can boot into download mode by USB-jig (very cheap, google for it), get your 'newest' firmware from sammobile.com, flash it with Odin and pray, that system & buttons work afterwards.
Seems like a borked volume rocker..
