It's got nothing to do with whether it's unlocked or not - that doesn't show until you put a SIM from another provider in. It will either ask for an unlock code or just work.
As for updates, if it's the official stock ROM then, as above, download Kies (from Samsung - Google will find it no problem) and that will tell you if there's an update. It all depends on your provider.
The alternative, if you're after getting newer firmware, is to look at the official firmware threads (you can get them from the xda bookmarks link in my sig). If you then want to unlock it then try this app - it worked for me...

hi guys, first post so apologies if its been asked before. i have run a search but all the results are regarding factory unlocked phones.
i bought my Galaxy S2 locked to the o2 uk network.
recently had it unlocked by o2 with the keys that they provided me.
with the up coming ICS update, im just curious to know if Kies will update me with a generic Regional release of ICS or will i still need to wait for an o2 branded ICS release because the phone was locked to o2 from new.
not sure what info you need, so ill just provide the usual info ive seen posted in forums.

I think you can do it either way. More than likely a general ICS release will be seen some time before you get a branded release from o2 so it will pretty much be up to you which one you implement, but I'm sure most will agree that the o2 official will come after the generic ICS

O2 phones are often unlocked and the upgrade path will be dependant upon O2 not Samsung as O2 will brand before release .Your phone is unlocked but still an O2 branded phone .
However Google have asked for a much faster roll out from networks for this update .
I would find your O2 firmware and save it as even if you try stock roms custom roms etc you can always wipe your phone and revert to the O2 firmware for an official upgrade .search CheckFus in that respect .

Thanks for the replies guys.
I thought by having my phone unlocked directly by o2 would make it unbranded, thus being able to update to an unbranded ICS release via Kies instead of waiting for the o2 branded one.
Well i guess I'll have to wait and see what happens. Hopefully I get an update with the unbranded version via Kies!
I'm not familiar with custom roms. I am comfortable with the whole scene, I just havnt tinkered with Android yet.

No just unlocked to the network that does not change product codes etc so its still the same phone as far as Kies can see O2 UK .
You can of course download and install stock ICS once released from XDA etc .

I may end up having to do that if o2 take too long or don't provide an ETA for their branded version of ICS.
I guess I'll need to get reading on where do get stock roms and how to flash them to my phone.
Can you link me in the right direction?

Hi
I've been jailbreaking iphones since they came out but have switched to android now so I'm a noob again!
I bought a new S2 on ebay (sealed) but I'm not sure it's standard UK, I've attached 2 screen grabs.
Could someone please tell me if my phone is rooted? (the [email protected] is what got me thinking)
In case attachments don't work:
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKH1-CL431225 [email protected] #2
Also:
PDA: I9100XWKH1
PHONE: I9100XXKG5
CSC: I9100XEUKH1
And is it possible for me to ugrade to ICS?
I've tried researching here and other websites. Odin is clearly the way to go and I see lots of XXK** and other 5 digit codes which i guess are region/Firmware specific but mine don't seem to match any of these??
Any help much appreciated.
Pretty standard stuff. XEU stands for UK Unbranded. Firmware is an old one though. Follow links in my signature to proceed. ICS has been released though we are still waiting for a unbranded UK version. Enjoy.

Dell is the name of the system on which this kernel was made. It is currently not rooted.

Yeah, Linux formats things as "username"@"computer". Samsung just compile their kernels logged in as root.

I looks like you have a standard build.
If you really want to check whether your phone is rooted or not, try downloading the "superuser" app from the market (sorry, "Google Play").
If your phone isn't rooted, it'll tell you.

yes its standard
as u see the CSC :I9100XEUKH1
see the bold letters
and as for as phone root is concr'nd ur phone is not rooted from the company
but u have to do it on ur own risk
as for as ICS rom is concerened u can if u root ur phone with a custom rom of ur choice
for more details about custom ICS roms mail me @ ( [email protected])
Thanks for the info. think I'll just wait for unbranded UK ICS to be released.

I have been reading in various places that XEU is a Polish version, is that correct? I'm a bit confused as to whether I have UK or Polish version - should be looking at XEUKH1 or XEUKH1 ??
Thanks

For the CSC part, you should be looking at I9100 XEU KH1; U+K is just a mere coincidence.
XEU is the code of the operator or the code of the "unbranded operator" - in my case I use "TPH" which is the unbranded csc for Portugal.
As for the token KH1:
K stands for the year - 2011 (ICS builds are from 2012 so they're L??)
H stands for the month - 11 or Nov (ICS builds have now been following this, though - e.g. LPQ, LP3, ...)
1 is an incremental number for multiple builds in the same month (also, sometimes letters are used)
Thanks.
So with these in mind for my phone:
PDA: I9100XWKH1
PHONE: I9100XXKG5
CSC: I9100XEUKH1
PDA - shows I am using Android version 2.3.4
PHONE - shows I have a phone designed to be used in the UK (XXKG5)??
CSC - shows I have an unbranded european phone??
Is that correct?
So if I upgrade my firmware to a stock UK one then all that would change above is PDA??
But if I upgraded to the Polish version of ICS how would that affect what *#1234#?
corype use
As far as i understand, installing any stock version minded for an EU phone should be the same. All they change is the language, however english should be present always.
I've got the same ROM images, and although I believe the XEU ICS has been released by Sammy yesterday, I'm (still) getting the "Your device does not support firmware upgrade" message from KIES.
I've done a hard reset of the phone, re-installed KIES with the latest version ( repeated on two PCs )...
Is there something funny about these ROM images?
Bought from Phones4U as an O2 Upgrade.
If I have to zap it using Odin, is there a way to save the existing ROM images?

First of all, we're not geeks; we're technical enthusiasts!
Second of all, as JJe said correctly, the button was probably removed by the carrier, you are at.
Third of all, you can always download frimware from here incase you don't have the OTA button
*OTA = Over the Air

I very much doubt your phone is broken/defect or what ever, I'd say go to sammobile.com/firmware and download the latest firmware you can find
Or, if you never have, try flashing a custom ROM, they're definitly worth a try! We've got some developers here, that should be prominent!

I am guessing you are with orange. Or maybe t-mobile as they are both one now. Your phone is not faulty and it is your service provider (orange/ t-mobile) who have disabled the updates option. I am in the same situation. You can either ring your service provider to give you an unbranded phone or flash the rom as suggested.
yeah, just flash some unbranded ROM available for you phone, I did exacly this and now I am FREE of carriers logos and other stuff, they should't control our lives, dam operators..

It doesn't really matter what ROM you use. The only difference is, is that you then have all the carrier crap on your phone. If you can, find the latest version for Europe/No carrier and flash that.
I mean, I live in Germany and I flash the European ones alll the time on other phones, because their fed up of all that bloatware on their phones.
But, I'd suggest trying out some custom ROMs. Personally, I'm using CarHD ROM v6 for my Galaxy S 4 (I9505), it use TWiz, but it's themed. Looks real awesome, though.
On my GS III, I at first had stock Telekom Germany, then I flashed Android Revolution HD - Wasn't happy with it at all after a week of use, constant lag and battery life was terrible (Please don't use this as an argument not to flash the ROM. The lagginess and battery life is relative, as it differes from user to user, as we all have different habbits of using our phones!), then I had Paranoid Android, CM10 and so on.. The last ROM I had on it was MIUI. I stuck with that until I got my new phone - Which was about half a year.
So, if you want my personal opinion, go check out MIUI, whether you choose the CM-based version or the official download from http://miuiandroid.com - It's your choice. In all the time I was using that ROM, using it rather heavily, my battery lasted just over a day and I never had any form of lag, whether it be in games like Hill Climb Racing or graphics-intense games like Asphalt 6. They all worked perfectly fine.

Hey,
I live in the UK and bought by S3 new on ebay, which is unbranded and an international version (i believe). The box said Orange France, however i havnt had any problems using it with my UK SIM. The jelly bean update has just been released through kies for the UK version of the S3, and i was just wondering what effect flashing this ROM using ODIN would have on my phone?
i downloaded the ROM from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1902493
Thanks
CSC is nothing bar a few text files that enable auto network APN .
It will make no difference but will be more up todate with its network connections list .

Ah right, thanks. so its should actually be better then seeing as i'm flashing the UK firmware to it.
Play store services are not all available worldwide - and some are country-region specific- but as long as you have a western european CSC you're fine....
Sorry for digging up an old thread but it covers exactly what i'm after
There's no official release for 4.1x for Australia yet, P5110 16gb WiFi only
what other stock ROM's will be suitable to ensure my play store, etc will all operate without an issue.
Thanks in advance

Lol, well ok, I would advise sticking with your CSC but you can always try other Roms and flash back to yours. As you are Wi-Fi only you won't have any of the recent modem issues that have been present across several Samsung devices

No CSC does not matter its not required to make a phone work .
But that's relevant to the I9300 range your phone may or may not be the same .

I'm sorry to break into this post, but i have the same question.
I live in Italy, but i bought an international Galaxy S3 with Romania CSC and i wish to stick with the ITV csc code.
I tried to flash, but it breaks OTA/kies Updates (that's not bad at all... my firmware is still XXEMC2, March 2013 with i9300QXFMEA2 csc (info taken with *#1234#).
I've also read that double flashing changes the CSC code...i tries this procedure with no results (csc still COA)
Can you please give me some tips?
Tips read the stickied basic faqs and guides .
Make your mind up to upgrade via OTA/ Kies or XDA not both .

i have been through the list of firmwares on samsung-updates.com but I am not sure which firmware i should install for my specific phone. there are a few netherlands links that i saw but were for tmobile...
furthermore, using *#1234# on my phone doesnt do anythign at all. the baseband version is i9300CELH1 when i go into about phone.
please help me figure out where I can find the original firmware for my phone that will keep it in its original warranty.

my phone was unlocked, got it for 600 euros so it wasnt locked to any carrier as far as I know.
sam mobile shows tmobile and vodafone, and a third one that doesnt mention any carrier. should i just go ahead with that? either way, is there a chance of my phone being bricked?

There is always a 'Chance' of being bricked but to be honest if you follow the Instructions it should be all ok, I have flashed via ODIN quite a lot and never had any issues Id say go for whichever ROM version you want e.g. is 4.1.2, I know new version is out on Vodafone so id say give that one a try just make sure to select the correct model number
