Question for you guys. I'm running CM7 (one of the nightlies) with DT a2sd. Received the low internal storage message today and was able to relieve about 1.5MB to get it above the threshold. But, that still leaves me at only ~20MB. I cleared cache and dalvik through recovery. I used cachemate. I moved dalvik to SD. And it didn't budge the internal storage amount. How can I find out what exactly is taking up that storage and what can I do to relieve it? Thanks for any and all help.
The only things that really take any significant amount of space are your downloaded applications, application data, and Dalvik cache. Assuming the downloaded applications and Dalvik cache really have been successfully moved to the SD card, then I suppose it could be some rogue application that is storing an excessive amount of data.
You can use one of the various file manager application that lets you gain root access and view the data partition for yourself to see what's taking up the most space though.
Are you sure the a2sd is set up properly?
I suggest using S2E over a2sd.

Okay well I went ahead and tried S2E...great BUT, i lost all of my app data (i.e. angry birds was reset to a fresh install). Every time I reboot the phone, I have to re-setup my theme...i.e. ADW resets to normal...basically a fresh install of CM7...any guidance on that? Btw, it did free up a lot of space when I went to S2E...

S2E and DT a2sd are going to screw each other up, so if you are going to install S2E, you really need to completely uninstall DT first.
If you don't mind setting stuff up again, you should probably just do a clean install.

Hmm... Even with the import function? After I do that it tells me to reinstall CM7 so as to uninstall dt a2sd... Is that not a reliable way to uninstall? I'd like to use S2E but really, really don't want to start fresh... *unless there is someway to link my restored apps (mybackup root - mainly for backing up the data) to the market * i'm pretty sure there's a way with some app but I don't remember what it's called.

Here is what i would try. Back up all apps + data with Titanium Backup and all system settings with MyBackupRoot. Do a full wipe/clean install of CM7. Install S2E and select to move apps and dalvik-cache to sd-ext through S2E. Reboot. Install Titanium Backup and MyBackupRoot from the market. Use Titanium to reinstall all apps + data. Reboot. Use MyBackupRoot to recover backed up system settings. Reboot. Done.
Just to make sure you know, S2E can only be used with CM7 and an ext-3 partition.

Ok...so I've been putting off updating my vibrant to a custom rom for awhile now. I know there is lots of info on how to install a custom rom...but I'm wondering what everyone does to prepare?
1. How do you backup your apps? Titanium? Just reinstall from market?
2. Other than installed apps, what other stuff do you backup?
3. Is there a way to do a 100% backup(like an image) so I can go back to my phone a it is right now? If for some reason I wanted to...
4. What else needs to be done to prepare before starting the update process?
5. How long does it usually take to backup, install new rom and then tweak and reinstall everything to get you back to where you were before beginning?
Thanks fort any help or even helpful links if you have any...!

I typically flash in this order if things:
1. Update all my apps.
2. Open titanium backup and update busybox and check settings (i have my backup folder set to "/sdcard/external_sd/TitaniumBackup" cause I like everything on my external sd card.
3. Check filters in TB set to all.
4. Run batch "Backup all apps + all system data" (i have about 150-200 apps installed at any given time, it does take a while to process that many apps, so i make sure that "settings> applications> development> keep screen awake while plugged in." is checked.
5. Reboot into clockwork recovery and perform a Nandroid backup if you so desire, and then flash disable_voodoo if you have it and reboot.
6. Walk away for 20 minutes while voodoo is disabled, then reboot.
7. Boot back into recovery and flash a custom rom.
8. Enable voodoo and reboot for voodoo conversion then into rom.
9. Reboot again after letting freshly installed rom sit untouched for ten minutes or so then open market sign in to google account.
10. Open TB and settings were set to auto sync so were good to go after it loads all info from os. Run batch of your choice but I start with restore all user apps w/ data, then restore system data.
11. Once all is done reboot into recovery and delete cache's and reboot.
This is just what I do, I rarely make a nandroid backup image because I've yet to every need to restore from one and I've ben flashing since my htc dreem, feel free to critic.

EDIT: it usually takes a cpl hours to be back to normal operation where you have everything setup the way you had it.
EDIT: I also didn't mention that I also backup and restore my adw settings. (but not till after the second boot when I log in to google.)

the only thing i don't agree with the above post, is backing up and restoring your system data with titanium. if you inadvertantly restore system data to a different rom, it can cause lots of problems. there are a few pieces of system data that are safe, but not all. the system data i have successfully moved without problems from rom to rom are:
Bluetooth Pairings
[Bookmarks] Browser
[Calendar] Calendar Storage
[User Dict] com.android.providers.userdictionary
[Contacts/calls] Contacts Storage
and
Wifi Access points
Basically in titanium, the system data listed in green should be safe to restore, anything in red, let it be.

The items in red and with a check mark icon won't restore anything because there's no data according to the legend... I don't know why their included in the list? Or am i missing something. I'm sure there's a thread for this topic somewhere and I would look If I wasn't so gd lazy! haha but anyway I haven't had any problems restoring select system items in TB when restoring apps and data after a custom rom install. From ADB shell or a terminal emulator installed in your phone:
Code:
$ su
# a2sd install
# a2sd cachesd
# a2sd align
From time to time, the command
Code:
# a2sd resetcache
should free some space on your a2sd partition. This operation takes some time to complete and restarts your phone.

What happens after i type that in the terminal emulator? Should i backup my sd card or anything first?
Cause ive already installed terminal emulator and im ready. But i just want to know...

No, backup is not necessary.
The first a2sd command makes sure a2sd is active. If it wasn't, will move your applications to the ext partition and free phone memory. If it already is, it doesn't do anything.
The second command moves the cache to the ext partition, also freeing phone memory.
The third command zip aligns the installed applications.
The resetcache operation is not necessary now, only in the future when you observe the free space decreasing even though you didn't install many new apps. The cache grows over time, and the reset operation deletes it and creates it again, making it smaller.
I performed all these commands on my phone just before writing here and everything was OK, so I am confident they will work for you too if a2sd is installed properly.

My only suggestion is for you to uninstall an application to make room for the emulator. Mine for an example is 1.46 MB. So try removing a game or anything else that uses a fair amount of storage. You can get it back once you solve the free space problem.
I have never used ADB, so I can't assist you with that alternative.

Does wiping cache through custom recovery is the same with wiping cache using and typing the command in the terminal emulator?
If it is, then i just wipe my cache through custom recovery? Cause i cant install and uninstall any apps! My phone memory has dropped from 18mb to 4mb. And i cant receive a text message.
Add: some of my apps are gone too, e.g. angry birds and so on. And after wiping the cache my apps that gone will be back right?

No, they are not the same. But since you're out of options, I think you should do it anyway - wiping the cache from the recovery menu, that is.
I'm sorry I am the only one trying to help you. I myself am in the process of reinstalling my phone right now (switching from void #echo to LOL 1.4.2).
Also, don't panic. Backup any important data first. What I told you to do won't brick your phone, so there's nothing you should be afraid of.

not a whole lot of info for me to work with here, but you probably are trying to restore some system things or something with an incompatible new rom. Likely the only way to fix it is a data wipe and then reinstall whatever applications you need... maybe clearing caches and datas of apps but I doubt it.
A data wipe is usually good anyways because the phone slows down when you have a lot of things installed and if you're anything like me you have a ton of stuff installed that you only used for one specific thing or for beta testing or whatever, and doing a data wipe and then just installing those applications on a need-to-have basis will give you a noticeable speed boost.

I am experiencing the same issues. I assume you have this problem with ICS roms, because that's where I get those problems. I am currently running WEUI and half my apps are not at all working. I have also flashed back to stock, tried ICS Slim and MIUI v4, but no luck. I am also getting issues, while listening to music, where the song will keep on playing, but the app will ask me if I want to FC or wait. This has only happened recently. I really do not feel like going back to 2.2 or 2.3. Any help is greatly appreciated

2 Did you try wiping /cache and /dalvik-cache and rebooting?

1. Yes
2. Yes, usually before I flash a different rom/reflash rom to try and fix this I wipe data and wipe cache patition and dalvik cache.
OK. The first question was to make sure you still had access to your internal and not sole sort of veiled encryption error.
Let me think about somethings and ill get back to you. I am wondering if it wouldn't be a bad idea to format /data and /system to make sure that you don't have any ghosts lurking. If you do, make sure you back up SDs contents to PC just in case.

All those apps are still force closing on 2.2. Could it be, because I'm restoring them from titanium backup?
I'll try to backup SD onto my Computer and then format sd. It's probably some ghost file that is causing my phone to have errors. It probably is a file that has to do with MIUI since I flashed that as it happened.
Btw thanks for trying to help
Edit: I formatted sd card, put all the files back onto sd card, restored apps with tiatnium backup, but still no luck. I even factory reset, wiped cache and dalvik cache after formatting sd, but still no luck.
Thanks everyone for trying to help. I figued out the problem. Titanium backup was causing all those apps to have issues. I uninstalled all user apps via tb and download them from the market. I am getting no force close what so ever, with dl apps from market.
Usually when that happens from TB, it is from restoring system files (they show in red in the TB list of apps).
I use it to restore user apps + data every time I flash a new ROM, but I never use it to restore system apps, and I don't have any problems with it.
Since you've already restored from the market, you could try running TB and deleting it's backup data and then running a new batch backup of user apps (and no system apps) to have the freshest copy of your apps from a working system. That should allow you to restore in the future, hopefully without issue.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
This could be a problem with using TB. TB gives you the option of restoring apps+data. If you're coming from a 2.2 rom to 4.0, you don't want to keep the data from a 2.2 rom. What you can do is restore apps without the data. That should solve your problem.
before anyone jumps on my ass... i HAVE googled the **** out of this and spent 2 days looking for an answer. NOTHING i've found has worked.
i CANNOT install ANY updates via market. the ones i have tried, end up telling me "insufficient storage available" and then seem to disapear. facebook, maps, gmail, and a few others did this. one by one apps are leaving my phone. NO there is not a virus.

I know you may want to here this but you may need to reflash the Rom and and do a full wipe and a super wipe and wipe dalvik ceche wipe ceche and format system and the list go's on basicly wipe everything and run a super wipe tool and then flash your Rom if that doesn't work then you may want to try another Rom

Had the same problem with my Evo 3D. The problem is that you have to have at least 10% free internal storage in order to install anything. So move some big App to SD card to solve this.
No solutions up until now yet, but the real culprit is the cache created by google playstore in the cache partition when downloading apps.
I found a workaround to use until google sort out this bug. I backed up all of my apps, do a factory reset, and restore the app. In order to prevent google playstore to build up it's cache when downloading new apps, i use an apk leecher, transfer the apk to sdcard, and install from sdcard. Sometimes i have to use market fixer to link some installed apps to playstore. i preserved the cache for updates only.
not very pretty and i don't like this, but at least it worked.
Just verifying...You sound like you know what you are doing, but just in case...
Maybe you really are out of space... when you did apps2sd/Link2SD, did you actually partition the SD card with two partitions? Use that 32GB CL10 and make a 4gb partition (use the recovery formatter, since most align the partitions, don't use winblows/linux), then use Link2SD (my preference, since it's UI manageable, plus apps2sd didn't work for my rom anyhow) and click "Link" (not move to SD). Link moves the .apk, cache, and user data (if I recall correctly) to the "4GB" partition, but move-to-SD just moves user data to the larger USB mountable FAT partition, so this isn't going to move everything, plus it's not as flexible when mounting via USB. Good luck!
Thank you very much for reminding me. I did make 3 partitions which includes 2gb of sd-ext, 1 gb of linux swap, and the rest is fat32. on the sd-ext, i've symlinked data, cache, google play cache, system/app, and user/app partitions. there was still plenty of space left on it (more than 800mb at that time).
