[Q] If i root do i lose touchwiz? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my vibrant afew hours ago. ( i previously had a rooted optimus one) I was thinking about rooting this but i like touchwiz. if i root will i lose it?? and rooting even improve this phone? and if so how?

to the best of my knowledge, rooting just gives u superuser permission, meaning some special abilities like flashing and whatnot. shouldnt affect touchwiz or any other apps or anything
pretty sure u can google "why root vibrant" and get some good info

It shouldnt, and even if it did you could reflash it [ 1,2,3,4.5} through recovery in a zip file.

If i flash cyanogen do i lose touch wiz?

yes, cm7 uses adw launcher, if, if you flash cm7 the launcher issue will fade, its so different. If you still want touch wiz study the op.

You will not loose Touchwiz after rooting. If you flash a custom ROM, you could. (As of late, most OS are based off MIUI and/or CM7... so you wont see much TW).

True and thank. I just decided to go with cm7. Can't wait till cm9

best optimus one rom

Hi all, i just have my second phone, and that's optimus one.
i just have this yesterday. (primary phone is desire)
anyways im having a hard time to choose what rom to apply,
there's a lot of rom,
so can you suggest what rom should i use, stability wise and speed.
GB and CM 7 are not yet polished but i want to tv out feature of GB, is there is 2.2 theme for that?
i believe the best 2.2 rom is the void e, but upon reading the thread, some people got bootloop.
and since im new to this phone, it's 2.2.1, so i need to downgrade,
and i have to ask this, what are the reasons to make this phone brick?
in spica the only thing that will make it brick is when your change bootloader screen and it is too big, then bye bye spica,
for this phone what are the causes of brick?
i hope you can help me out, im new to this phone,
thanks in advance, viva, long love, mabuhay optimus one

u can brick if u do sth wrong (turning off when flashing etc) without a custom recovery.
with custom recovery, you can reflash and stuph. the only step when u flash without recovery is the KDZ, which has the highest risk. beware.
I recommend CM7. its awesome.

Read this thread completely. you will get an idea about the various circumstances which can brick your phone
[HOWTO] Phone not responding at all - last chance to repair
Also read the following thread if you are planning to downgrade and root your phone
[HOWTO] Rooting, Installing - Android SDK, Custom Recovery, Custom ROM's
For Optimus One I sugest Void Echo or LOL 1.4 ROM.
i would go with CM7 by mik . it has great battery life now i am on 45% from 48 hrs which is the most important in all roms while cm7 itself says what great in that rom .
just try it just be sure to follow steps properly to avoid any unwanted probs
I think the best is CM7 by Mik.
I like LOL 1.4.2 better than void echo. Void didn't like my phone. The tweaks from francisco seem to work fine. Dalvik cache to ram script seems to work fine too. (pretty sure it's there since it's being rebuilt every boot.)
Those are the only roms I tried though.

Best ROM would probably be an overclocked and rooted stock rom. Just my opinion
cm7 by mik beta6 ftw
if you want a rock solid go with void echo.i think ciaox is cooking something awesome go to androidworld.it use google translator...seeing the change log its pretty epic.
i have a recovery, so am free from brick?
also is there instance that after boot loop or something, recovery cant be access, via 3 button combo?
CM7 by mik_os, and there is Prime, Megatron, and Void/Devoid, which are froyo roms, but nice nonetheless.

No, nothing else. Only custom ROMs and radios. It really isn't worth the hassle of rooting an Android device. Especially if said Android device works perfectly fine as is.
There are a few apps that require rooting and you'd be able to use those. But they can be lived without.
How about applying a custom bootscreen & also a custom splash screen? Or trying out a new launcher?
Sent via my pimped out Desire HD using Tapatalk
you dont need to root your phone to change your launcher. just install it
there are apps that allow you to change your boot animation (you need to be rooted of course)
as for the splash screen, im not sure if that can be changed
edit: just found out how to change the splash screen (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1170965), but i dont think your phone is supported
Put your phone in airplane mode and throw it up in the air
Try a new kernel
Try a new modem
Try a new boot animation
Try ad free in the market
Try overclocking
Try undervolting
Try rom manager and root explorer
Try whatever you want, because now you can.
Oh, obligatory Try CM7 / MIUI ROM's & all the rom's that are better than stock!

Go insane with flashing to a point where your phone gets bricked...jk...you can flash different kernel, themes, boot animations, flash modems, flash radios, travel to mars, transform into iphone or steve jobs....and god knows what else can you do with rooted phone...

When the vibrant came out of the box it was not perfectly fine lol
Flash a new rom and try some cool stuff
Vibrant+MIUI
I suggest reading up a bit, for maybe a few days or even a week first. Make sure you feel comfortable with what you're going to do FIRST.
If you really want to be extra safe, but a jig too (I got one for less than $10, google it or search the forums.)
Nothing feels worse than that moment of uhoh.. what did I do?
Read up, follow instructions (get the jig too) and enjoy the Vibrant for what it can really do, which is so much more than stock.
Don't rush into flashing things when you don't really get the jist of how to correctly do it. Trust me.. I did, and I REALLY messed up badly. I was just too excited. Definitely check out some new ROMS and kernels. Really ups the experience

[Q] advantages of aftermarket rom over stock.

Before i try to install a new rom what are the advantages over stock?
Thanks chrisi
See the (rather extensive) features section in the OP of any of the fine ROMs available. I use CherryCrust with the ProDX theme (thanks, Noattach) as well as the Argos font pack ported by Whipon. I am very satisfied with the tweaks and mods that navalynt has ported and/or baked up (many thanks). It is well worth reading up and doing it right (read the directions, warnings and prerequisites 10x over before doing anything!). I hope I answered your question, as I don't really see any other way it can be interpreted. Don't forget the thanks button

+1 to the person above, each ROM thread has a features list in the first post.
If you are move comfortable with stock rom, you can sort of "create your own rom" by installing stock deodexed 2.3.4 and applying the mods you want from there (themes, custom kernels, battery % mod, tethering mod, webtop mod, sd card fix, etc.....)
Installing all of this is really easy if you have an unlocked CWM recovery.
I installed a custom rom for the first time yesterday (Aura) And im very pleased with the difference! i think you would like it!. even if theres the posibility of bricking your device its worth it.

It really comes down to how bored you are with stock? There are people that have gone down the custom route, and have gone back. It's all about personal preference.
If you are happy with stock, you may wanna stick it out and spend some time reading about the custom kernals. That way when you do eventually get bored, you'll have a much better chance of upgrading successfully.
Definitely try to "Baby steps" your phone as much as possible...

Thanks guys guess i will have to read up on each rom.. a custom rom is basicly the whole OS vs just doing a kernel upgrade? Id really love to go balls out and do the rom but we will see.. there is no way to bring back a bricked device is there? What could cause a brick besides not flashing right? I wish there was someone local that could do the rom for me lol. I guess im going to have to do some reading.
Also i rooted it using fastboot... now whats this i see with unlocking through fastboot? I need to unlock the phone before i can even think about flashing a rom?

There are 2 types of bricks; soft and hard. A hard bricked phone turns it into a paperweight. A soft bricked phone can be recovered. There is a sticky post on the developer forum that describes how to avoid hard bricking your phone.
The stock vs custom ROM issue is a truly personal preference as described above. The only way to get more comfortable with it is by reading and doing. READ FIRST!
YES, unlock the bootloader first. i soft bricked mine when i was learning how to do it.

[Q] rom

Can you take a rom made for a different model phone and put it in another model? Example rom made for samsung put in a razr phone. I found a dark aosp rom i want to put in my razr. Will it work if i root?
yes you can but it has to be ported to this device...I want to also have some Roms i had on my EVO to be on this RAZR like a MIUI or CYANOGEn those were my FAVS the phone just came out give it some time it will happen in no time im sure

First, IMO MIUI just looks like an iPhone. But the problem is the locked bootloader, without it being unlocked you can't install the custom kernel required by those ROMs. I have the Eclipse ROM installed right now and love the debloatedness of it. I will go back to stock once ICS is released so I can upgrade. But I think I will stick with this until then.

Really wouldn't recommend doing that, you will almost certainly bootloop your phone. Other devices use different hardware and need different drivers, it takes a fair bit of work to port a ROM.

Do you just want the theme? We can't really port a lot more than a framework to the RAZR thanks to that locked bootloader.
If it is the theme you want, extract the boot animation, sounds, fonts, framework-res, system UI, and any apps you fancy, and start extracting, signing, and comparing what's in the RAZR's stock files vs. your desired ROM. Steep learning curve if you're new to it, no overnight fix or instant answer, I'm afraid.

Yes there is a way, just in case you don't have it here we go . If you don't have clockwork mod recovery installed use your phone to download the cwr update.zip in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028 .Scroll down and look for directions on how to install cwr. Use a file manager app called " Astro " to put the file on your internal sd. Once you have recovery mode installed you can simply use your phone to download a custom 2.2 ROM and flash it through recovery mode (there will be directions on how to flash this in the thread) , just be sure to READ everything before flashing. This is probably the most popular 2.2 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441976 , you can search for others if you wish. This will pretty much void your warranty so if that's a problem then your probably stuck with 2.1 until you get your usb port fixed. Here is the closest Stock 2.2 ROM you will find if that's what your looking for http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674519

yes... you can get an update.zip from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/59531727/Clockwork Recovery/Update.zip taken from Woodrube's Signature.
FYI DONT use KIES. It may Hard Brick your device. Place this update.zip in the root of internal SD (NOT inside a folder). You will have to do reinstall packages twice to get it to CWM maybe.
There are many good 2.2 ROMs like Moped's Ryders ROM and Fishman's.

I can't help but to notice that your signature says MB855. Since you are using a Photon, are you doing this modding for a friend's phone? If so and that person is not the "technical" sort, I suggest you leave them on 2.2 for now.
ICS ROMs are well beyond what you would think since we have no official ROM from Samsung for our devices, however they are not without dangers and pitfalls. There is a bug that is hitting Vibrants, Captivates, I-9000's, a few Asus Transformers (tf101)-in fact someone got hit with it yesterday. It is called the Encryption UnSuccessful bug and it will render the Internal_sd useless and you will have to hack your External_sd to run ANY ROM. Other than that and the fact that the Vibrant has crappy GPS (sans hardware fix), ICS ROMs are spectacular, especially since very few phones are running ICS at all, let alone 4.0.4.
I suggest you read about the EU bug but my pick for the best daily driver ICS ROM is by far ICZen with SubZero kernel. You can find it here but check out the dev section too.
