Bought a new phone: have an eris for any testing - Droid Eris General

I just got a new phone after having my little eris for the full 2 year contract. I've used and abused this phone and I kinda miss it. I do use it arond the house on wireless.
Anyone needs me to test anything on an eris, let me know, I have an eris as a testbed, now.

Me too!
Lurker here, but I just received a spare Eris and will soon upgrade to a DInc 2. So I have two Eris (eseses?) available for testing if needed (didn't want to start another thread to say the exact same thing meandmine said).

I bricked my phone

So, I was playing around trying to build a ROM in the HTC Kitchen available in Chef Central, and when i flashed the completed ROM it gave me and error about Busybox. i checked their FAQ and read that to fix this error you need to flash this certain SPL.
I flashed the SPL, and now my phone is in a state that i believe is called "Bricked." I can plug it in, and the charging LED comes on. try to boot (Normal, Amon-Ra, or hboot) and the light goes off, screen stays dark, and nothing happens. pull the battery, unplug/replug, boot, same results.
how frakked am i?
Yeah you probably are bricked :/ maybe someone can help you, best of luck!
[Q] question bout bricking
just a question but if you brick your phone does anyone know if you get a diff phone for a replacement or do they just send you a refurbed eris?? any insight is appreciated
most of the time they will send you a replacement of same model if they do replace it. bricking it is against the warranty so it depends of the vzw reps decide to replace it for you.
well truthfully im just tired of the phone and i want something different. and from what ive read on the verizon forum everyones haveing problems with the 2.1 OTA (even tho im on froyo =D) but i didnt know if they would give you a incredible or droid as a replacement if you tell them it did it while installing one of their " OTA upgrades" since the eris has been discontinued? but thank you for the feedback
Do you have any sort of warranty with verizon?
If so just call and say that you lost it. You can get a new one shipped to you for like $80, if you were at an upgrade I would say that you should just go get an incredible. It feels like an eris but at least twice as fast. I have both an eris and incredible and love both Bricked the Incredible at least 8 times... lol.

is there anyway you can go in and pay extra money for an early upgrade?
Not unless you want to pay full retail price. I got my eris in the first week of March and 37 days later the incredible came out. The VZW reps said I was 7 days past my 30 day return period and if I wanted to switch models I would have to pay full retail price. I said EFF that and decided to root my eris. After 12 months, I will have the option to early upgrade without my $100 credit at upgrade price. Read your contract, you signed it. I'm going to just wait because by the time my upgrade rolls around the LTE network will be up and running and since I already have an unlimited plan, I will be grandfathered in with no data caps on the 4g network.

[Q] Getting a warranty replacement on my Eris

So I went into my Verizon store this morning to do a waranty replacement for my Eris due to a dead spot in the upper right corner of the screen. Replacement will be here in 3 days. What are the odds I will be sent a different droid? This is my first time doing a warranty replacement.
getting a different droid phone is highly unlikely, a lot of Eris's have been turned in to verizons trade in program so you will most likely get a eris refurb.

just got an eris refurb yesterday. your chances of getting an eris are 100% unless you were told otherwise.
Eh yeah another Eris it was. 8 more months till upgrade time.
update: after 24 hours with this phone, it is more screwy than my 1st one!
another one is on the way but they placed it on my 2nd line which is my fiancee's eris. I call to tell them its for my line, and the guy says well when I get it send it back and they will send one for my line. So I got frustrated and the guy offered me a month free service and transferred me to tech support. The guy there says when the phone comes in I can still activate it on my line. Hope the 3rd one isn't so messed up.

Yeah, you can switch which phones are on what lines at will, or replace with phones not even acquired through Verizon. Sometimes you do have to at least activate it the first time on the line that it was originally intended, though, and then you can switch it on Verizon's site, in theory.
Hopefully it keeps working well for you.
The best thing to do with Verizon reps when they start screwing up is to get exponentially more irate than you really are. You'll usually get something for free

emailed verizon saturday and they called me back today. my line was eligible for the early upgrade, but they rep was nice enough to do both. he also said this was the last time I could do an early upgrade. So Wednesday I'll have the x and my fiancee will have the Inc. I hope the devs for these phones are as awesome as the ones for the eris!

That's awesome! Have fun with them!
I actually was having issues with my Eris, I went into a Verizon corp. store, they told me I'll have a free Inc the next day. 3 days later I got another Eris and an apology letter explaining that in order to get the early upgrade my Eris must fail 3 times in total.
This second Eris is acting really odd and I may have to take it back.
Droid X devs are lousy. I recommend you steal your fiances DINC and run cyanogen mod 7....

I wonder why tech cannot just change the line over on the phone? that does not make much sense! But hey you got a free month of service you CANNOT beat that my friend!

Heh. That's brave them telling you exactly what formula will get you a early upgrade.

Yeah, that sounds really weird. You can definitely put any phone you want on any line, at least after initially activating it on the line it was "meant" for. I know I already commented to that effect, but, WTH.
Sorry to resurrect the thread, but I do have some more information. Or at least have had a similar situation. My fourth eris just fell victim to the trackball issue. Went to store and was offered the LG Vortex which is an android phone, but does not have an xda forum (is it bad that is a requirement for my phones now). They told me to call and see what other options were available. The rep on the phone agreed to get me a new incredible for $99. Would give me credit on my next bill for $120. However, it would use one of the two year upgrades on another line. Just wanted to report my results. Also this means I will still have my eris and my wife will have hers, but most of my time will probably be spent with the inc forums. Although, now I have gotten my wife in to flashing her phone and such so she will expect updates...lol.

Rooting the Inc was pretty easy, even though there's no 1 click app like for the eris or z4 root for example. There's a gingerbread rom but no where near where the gb roms for the Eris are.

thanks. i've been checking out those threads and it seems like most of the stuff is working on the gb roms. although i couldn't tell if fm was, and i'm almost positive the tv out is not.

How many people actually had the g1?

How many people had the g1, and what's been your story since? I remember getting a hold of cupcake a little early and being amazed by the onscreen keyboard. Eventually, after a brick and repair, I went to the mytouch slide (after about a year and a half, maybe 2? with the g1.) The hardware seemed super quick at the time. However, rooting it was a pain in the Ass and as a result, development was dead! After like a year with cm7/sense I found a vibrant for 160$ on craigslist and I've been loving it since. I might think about getting the g2x, but as of right now I'm happy with bi-winning.

I was a G1 owner. It was great in it's day, but always felt like HTC underestimated the power needed to run Android. Biggest hassle was that the keyboard backlights on the Bronze model actually made it hard to read the text on the keys during the daylight. "Upgraded" to a MyTouch 3g, which wasn't any kind of upgrade at all. Then got the Vibrant, and haven't looked back.
I had a G1 early on and at the time the market was non-existent and apps were sparse. I liked the concept of it but the phone was unevenly weighted and the keyboard flipping out always felt like it was going to break. It wouldn't connect to Exchange so I sold it. I got a My Touch 3G Fender and eventually the Vibrant.
I totally agree @lotherius about the power and the keyboard. Fortunately, the sales rep pointed out that the bronze phone keyboard was almost impossible to see at times and we bought the other one. The MT3G wasn't a powerhouse either. It ran Cyanogen ok but the stock OS was lagging.
I had one about two months after they were released (played around with my mom's the first couple months of release then got mine). I used that until August 2010 and got a vibrant. I didn't root my g1 until after I got my vibrant cause I was scared of bricking, just ran official updates up to 1.6, once I rooted that I checked into rooting the vibrant and when I realized how much easier it was I did that and have been side. My wife took over my g1 and I took it back to stock for her. About a week ago I got her a MT3G slide, and she's loving that one now. I'm still using my vibrant and might even continue to until my contract is up next August. I even have my g1 back and get to play with it again.
I rocked the G1. Pained me to sell it.
Obviously, my nick name says that I am a G1 owner.
I had the G1 as a valentine gift on Feb 14th, 2009. My ex gave it to me before she left the US to go back to her hometown in Melbourne, Australia (heart break/sad). I used it and loved it until the Nexus one came out on Jan 05, 2010. I got the Nexus one for $500 without contract and used it for several month until the Vibrant came out on July 15, 2010. I sold my G1 on for $200 and the Nexus one for $500 on craigslist. I then enter a 2-year contract with T-mobile and got the Vibrant for $150 on wirefly.com. Since then, I have also tried the Nexus S and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" without contract, but re-sale them after a few months.
I liked the G1 a lot, but it was so primitive at that time. I did root and unlock it to use CM ROM. When the Nexus One came out with many improvements, I move up without hesitance. For the Vibrant, like many of you, I hate it for the GPS did not work well, and the issue of updating to Gingerbread. However, I am so please with what I have right now. It's a good phone, though. I think you must know how to use the best out of it, for your own good. A smart phone in a dumb hand is still a dump phone. I am planning to move up to the SGS II next month when I save enough money to buy it without contract. Just share some thought
I got one like 3 months after it was released for Christmas.
It was my second phone following the BB Pearl. It was amazing! The new OS astounded me, everything was amazing!
As soon as a Hero Port was released I flashed and was almost crying LOL.
Then CM3 was released and that was awesome as it was really fast!

I didn't have it, but I had something horrible the Motorola Cliq...then got the Mytouch Slide and go bumped up to the Vibrant. I'm in love with the phone. I really want a new phone like the Nexus One or something.

No upgrade path keeping the Eris.

I went to upgrade my Eris today and to my surprise the local Verizon store refused to sell me any HTC devices. I asked for a Rezound and they said they have only sold 2 of them so they dropped it in the, So I asked if there were any thunderbolts to be had again a No. In fact they told me that they would not recommend any HTC devices and pushed the Motorolla Bionic. I said no thanks and walked out. I'm hoping it was just a bad store not a new Verizon policy.
Looks like I have an additional 2 years to enjoy the Eris. Not upgrading.
Even though we are now on the legacy device section let's keep this alive please!
I used to bake roms for the old Sx66 (Blueangel) I suppose I'll be getting into Android development now.

Weird, I just upgraded right b4 Xmas to the tbolt for $49 and kept my unlimited data. Wonder what's going on..?

They are selling the Rezound on the web site for sure. Order it there and let your Verizon Wireless store not get their sale commission - they have obviously not earned it.
Idiots.
I got a Rezound just before Christmas and I LOVE it!! Best phone ever, especially once it gets some good development going.

What will be the next Incredible ?

Hello- I have had my Dinc for about 6 months (bought it used). It was my first real smartphone....my Pre didn't count ;-)
Since that time I have been really enjoying trying different ROMs etc. To me it is something that helps make my 'old' phone seem new and fun.
Eventually I will be getting a new phone as I am now off contract with Verizon. I will stick with Verizon but was wondering what you guys think the most Developer supported phone (released in the near future) will be in the future? Is the Droid Incredible 4G going to be the next Dinc and allow me to have lots of ROM'ING fun?
Thanks,
CxP
