Help me decide on Flyer - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

Im currently a WIFI Only Motorola Xoom owner and im considering switching to a HTC Flyer.
Reason being, the xoom is big, not as convenient to carry and relies on WIFI.
The Flyer im looking at is from US Cellular and has 3G data package.
Im big into roms and kernels so chime in with what kernel / rom combination you are running on your 3G Flyer.
Also, let me know about battery life. perks of the Flyer..etc..
Help me decide if the Flyer is a good xoom replacement or not ;-)
thanks in advance guys!

Flyers a good replacement for size and battery but not ROMs an kernels. There are 2 kernels, 1.7 and 1.8 GHz over clocks. All the gingerbread ROMs are just tweaks, the most tweaked being LeeDroid. For Honeycomb, it is FlyHoney as it has the latest leak.
It's dangerous to install HC so you'd better be careful.
On my flyer i recently downgraded from HC cause of the bugs and the simplicity gone. I am on stock + root, no biggie.
Unless you are the must-hack-device-till-it-dies kind of guy the flyers a good option.

None of the tablets that run Honeycomb have much in the way of custom ROMs. Google only this week released the source code so all that could be done were minor tweaks and add or remove existing pieces. Flyer has the best hardware for any current 7"

not to mention the looming honeycomb release for the tablets. wonder if they are going to do source releases on the honeycomb kernels so that ICS will be easier to port?

Wouldn't his Flyer be more of a View if it's running 3g and not capable of running Flyer wifi roms?
For me, I knew I was making that tradeoff when going for the connected View.

No it would be the most widely used variant of the flyer, and it is like the view capable of both cellular and wifi data.

that figures. frickin' sprint...haha. Gives me more reason to complain to them about keeping up with the updates. If I see it for the Flyer, I better see it for the View. Though I think the View is selling fairly well (say compared to the Tmob Streak 7). So they should have good reason to keep up with them.

Got the Flyer today, loving it so far compared to my xoom. I dont have the stylus yet since it was sold out at the US Cellular store. (might pick one up online).
Loving the device. Fits perfect in the and and very speedy for a single core processor.
Loading up all my apps now and still the battery hasnt moved much at all.
Very impressed with the device so far!

buy it,
buy it now
we can't wait, you must buy it now.
Don't wait for Congress, buy it, buy it now

Flyer vs view? Development

Flyer vs EVO View
I will be receiving my EVO View from Sprint in the next few days..my question(s)
Will all development for both devices be under HTC Flyer?
Are there any differences. Ie...WiFi only vs. 3g/4g/wifi. Sprint vs. UK?
Thanks, sorry beforehand if noobish.
Also, with Sprint in mind, would you recommend EVO View over new Galaxy 10.1 or any others that might be coming on Sprint Network?
Thanks

The HTC Flyer/Evo View is in a different category than the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (at this current time) because at the end of the day, the Flyer/Evo View is currently running a mobile OS and I don't think it should be compared to tablet OS.
With that being said, after experiencing using Gingerbread 2.3 on the Flyer and using Honeycomb 3.1 (which the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has), its a more enjoyable experience with Gingerbread. Honeycomb OS is still in the process of being cooked and there are not that many apps (96 in the featured tablet apps as of 6/23/11) for it, whereas you will have plenty of apps for the Flyer (the mobile apps scale up pretty well). So those are things to think about as far as that.
EDIT:
Also, the HTC Flyer/Evo View has a niche that no other tablet has right now and that is the ability to write with the Scribe pen. Although it's overpriced in my opinion, it still serves a niche purpose that you might find will help you be more productive. Being able to write/highlight on PDF files was a feature I felt would be helpful for me (i.e. Having your client sign contracts on your Flyer/Evo View instead of paper and instantly having a digital file of it).
So I would recommend it over other tablets if: you will be doing the example above, like the idea of the being able to take screenshots/PDFs/Books and write on them, like the idea of recording something and remembering what you write at that current time, having a digital notepad or want a portable tablet (w/smaller form factor).

This!. All the reviews kept whining about the flyer/view not running honeycomb but alot of those reviewers didn't realize that honeycomb was barely polished enough for the 10 inch tabs they were first released for. The apps issue is another plus for it running gingerbread at the moment. While it is still a tablet, just like you said it can't be compared to the likes of the galaxy tab because they are running different os versions. Once honeycomb or even ice cream sandwich is available for our devices then hopefully things get better than what they already are.
That's a good question actually, regarding the ROM development. Past experience on the Desire Z/G2 phone was that ROMs can be developed to be agnostic of GSM network differences. Not being a developer, I'm just guessing that custom ROMs will be developed to leave the 3G/4G radio portion of the memory alone. But the issue of some models having 3G/4G and WiFi, and some WiFi only might complicate the matters.
Also, I don't know if it makes a difference that the UK Flyer is GSM (WCDMA?) and the Sprint EVO View is EV-DO and WiMax (from what little I know of Sprint's network). It might just be a difference in the radio software, or it might require completely different ROMs. I don't think we would know until people start messing around with the various stock ROMs and see what the difference is.

Tired of waiting for Honeycomb..

Guys! now I am fed up..seems that they will never release honeycomb upgrade...
Anybody any news???
Try living in the US and being ignored even when it comes to small updates.
Think we'll see Honeycomb around the time the Puccini launches? You'd think, but it really appears that HTC has ignored the Flyer.
Try not being updated since launch.... screw it. Above post is most believable, Honeycomb when Jetstream/Skyrocket/Puccini launches.
We should bother the sh%t outta them about it. Seems to works.

LOL XD, I will call them.
Same here, paid in full for the 32gb 3g tablet on day one to use it for my work (illustration/concept design) because of the n-trig digitizer and form factor... Now 4 months later, i only use it for some dumb web browsing, mail checkin and occasionnal movie watchin, stuff that i could perfectly perform on my phone... The scribe sdk (recently released) seems to be 3.x specific from what i understand... AND NOW I'M MAD AS HELL, FED UP OF WAITING. Feel cheated and insulted by the total lack of communication. Should have wait and go for the upcoming Lenovo Thinkpad tablet with nvidia cpu, full size host usb, fullsize sdcard reader and honeycomb out of the box...
I just wish htc would communicate
If somebody know who to hit (that would matter), i'm down for some good old fashion mass emailing, or any action that would get em to give us a goddamn answer

With all respect, how did you plan to use your Flyer? For which kind of work? Why do you think the current software is incapable? It would be good if you can share with us.
If you think that you can not use efficiently the current Flyer for your work I am afraid that you will still be disappointed when the Honeycomb comes. IMHO, the Honeycomb will not bring significant changes in the Flyer's productivity.
BTW, Lenovo Thinkpad is 10" tablet which is in a complete different category. And Chinese Lenovo quality in general is worse than HTC's (I own an Lenovo T serie laptop, It's bad). I think HTC Puccini will be better than the Lenovo Tablet.
I 100% agree!! 100%.
It's not that HC will solve all of our issues or bring in Earth shattering functionality. That's not the point nor my immediate concern.
It's the complete lack of communication and the complete lack of backing.
HTC marketed scribe, where are the new apps supporting it? Where is the communication letting users know that supporting apps are coming?
HTC promised honeycomb "shortly after launch", where is it? Where's the communication?
Heck, where are the accessories?
If HTC is going to position themselves as a company that innovates on top of Android, then they have to do better than this...
My recommendation to you guys is to annoy the heck out of them on twitter and on their facebook page... I try to post to them every now and then just to be a pain in the ass

Sorta have to agree here. After playing with Honeycomb tablets in the stores, I'm wondering what all the fuss is about. Gingerbread + Sense makes the Flyer a wonderful tablet, IMHO.
Yeah, I'd like to see more pen aware apps. But I suspect it's only a matter of time before they start showing up (especially once other manufacturers adopt N-trig pen technology). And even if they don't, the ability to jot down notes is still worth the price of admission, IMHO.

I agree here also. All the current HC tablets are laggy. HC has a few cool features, and looks nice. But the eye candy comes at the expense of performance. And none of the HC features missing from Gingerbread are real deal breakers. HTC is probably trying to figure out how to incorporate Sense without making HC even more laggy. Compared to current HC tablets, the Flyer GB experience is smoother and faster in most respects.

u may be right, maybe i'm trippin, but i know for sure that Autodesk Sketchbook pro for honeycomb is supposed to support the scribe/n-trig digitizers, so for now unfortunately it feels like this HC update is my best chance to be able to use the flyer as a digital sketchbook. I also keep an anxious eye on that Fresco thread in the meantime, and i sure hope the somebody can make this happen Gingerbread flavor... nobody likes a laggy tablet
for info, i plan to use it to do my preliminary sketches and color studies on the go. The note app combined with evernote may be great for note taking and sketching basic ideas, but misses alot of basic features to call it a painting app (canvas size, simple color mixing/picking, etc...)
i agree about the lenovo feeling pretty cheap compared to htc, but i really like the features, and it should run Sketchbook pro (for instance) with pen pressure out of the box... but i sure like the flyer form factor... i'm just reallyreallyreally frustrated right now...
Anybody knows when pretends HTC offer the Puccini?
September? October? November? Christmast?
I can try wait until Christmast... Not sure...
Depends on the roms...
And of course, i luv this tablet is perfect 4 me

Well, one thing is sure... Anyone of us that have performed the s-off method will not be able to upgrade anyhow! Unless guys here find a way to conform the HTC OTA protocol or HTC add geek allowance into their updates with a warning!
To be honest, I'm with others on here, I've tried HC, and unless HTC have given an even better Sense cover to it, it does not give me any thoughts of upgrade... They still have not fixed PPTP VPN for goodness sake....!
what is actually honeycomb.....
Honeycomb is a new version of Android (3.0) specifically made for tablets. As of now it is laggy, and not fit to run on the Flyer. ICS, is the version after Honeycomb which is to release this fall, and is one OS that runs on both tabs and phones.
Hi,
why isn´t there a rom with android 3.2?
Best regards

They have. You can see HTC's UI customizations on the Puccini screenshots.
I received this response yesterday when pushing the issue
@htc: @TheNewDorkTimes The software is in development and we'll post here upon its release. Thank you for asking.” #flyer #honeycomb
again vague....companies like Motorola and HTC are screwing customers with false claims of soon to be released features and updates. This, "sell now and make promises philosophy", is pissing a lot of people off. People take the chance of purchasing the product in good faith expecting they will see what was promised soon. HTC can make great products but I for one will never purchase a product that promises features or capabilities in the near future. I will simply wait for something better or go with a reputable company that actually keeps it word.

NT vs HTC Flyer for $299

Can anyone comment on this. It seems the HTC Flyer is now down to $299 and it is has way more features than the nook tablet. Two cameras, 3g, bluetooth etc. and only $50 more. Now it is heavier and thicker but what do you all think.
Unless your going to get rid of the stock rom because it is soooo sluggish and you hate sense, I would get a nnook. But if you loveee sense, go for the flyer.

I bought a $20 capacitive pen from Radio Shack and let me tell you I am really impressed with how well that works on my Evo 3D. I think it depends on how good the touch sensor is though, I tried it on a hero and a optimus too. those two didn't work as well, but also they aren't as responsive to my fingers either (typing on the hero sucks).
I think the biggest downside to the Flyer is the single core. It may be a smoking 1.5ghz. A dual core is a whole different ballgame, especially once the nook can be over clocked.
If the nook tab support is anything like the nook color support I would got NT, the flyer will have lil to no support soon enough imo
Well, Flyer doesn't have a dualcore processor, it's heavier than NK and I believe the screen is not IPS, but regular LCD?
Although it does have stuff like GPS, Camera and 3G.
I, for one, don't care about that at all. I ain't gonna be taking pictures with it, ever. GPS? What for? 3G - could be handy, but with US data costs - you won't be using it ever, you'll sit on WiFi.
+ Sense is sluggish, and my NK is freaking fast.
I've been looking at the HTC flyer, when the HC rom is released (appears imminent, a release candidate has leaked), I will buy one. Selling point for me is the real digitized pen, but it is not fully supported in the stock GB rom - limited to certain apps and markup only. HC removes the limitation and it works in all programs. You can root and load the HC release candidate now, but it's a lot more involved than on the NC which is why I'm waiting for the official HC rom.
My advice after looking closely at it would be to go with whichever has more features you'll actually use. Keep in mind the NT hasn't achieved root (yet), but has decent functionality stock. If you won't use any of the Flyer features, why spend the extra money?

[Q] Should I buy an HTC view?

I don't know if this is where this goes but I was wondering about the HTC view its not very much and I really want a tablet not a giant one but this one seems nice I just want some user expierences like how good it is or how well it preforms. Also the development is it very supported by devs or easy to root etc. Also if anyone knows of a better tablet within a 300$ limit and I know from sprint this is only like 250$ anyways hope to get some feedback.

I have had the View since launch, and I can say that it is a great tablet for all your basic internet browsing, book reading, games, and pretty much everything a tablet is intended to do.
The design is a lot better than a lot of the mostly plastic tablets out there. The scribe, while still missing a lot of functionality, has been useful for a few things.
Now, for the money you can get the Acer 7" WiFi only tablet running 3.2 for $200, but as far as a contract goes I think that the View is great.
I got mine for $250 with the scribe and only pay $35 a month (21% discount btw).
Now, as far as development goes, being as it's so different from the Flyer and only available on Sprint there are few View owners that do development, so if you're a flashaholic be prepared to go a long time without any updates, and no vanilla android. I've tried many launchers to make it look like HC without being satisfied.
Take into account these things and see where the View will fit in with your needs/wants. I don't regret the purchase.
Edit: Apparently an official HC release is imminent, so your wait for a completely new update won't be long.
I was actually thinking about the flyer I know for 16g its 299 and runs with a 1.5ghz processor and has official HC (I think) and seems to have a lot of support. I will be using it more as a gaming device I usually do emulators on my phone OC to 1.5ghz and it runs games smooth and does 4400 on quadrant but it does overrun and I know it won't last long if I push it so I wanted to get a higher end device I would be upgrading to the epic touch but no more special pricing is available. And this is only my first year.

Man that sucks, but I'd rather it be right than wrong when they release it. If we could get a leaked version of it, regardless of the bugs, I know you could make it plenty stable. With the otterbox out now I'm loving my view more than ever.
theres like 20 threads asking if someone should buy for every device out there, they are really annoying, i say no!
Get one
Best 7" tablet for the price range
I love mine as well. I live out in the middle of nowhere and went with it instead of the flyer, quite by accident. I actually ordered a 32 gig flyer from amazon and the seller immediately emailed me stating it was a view with the pen, screen protectors and a case included so I didn't argue.
The only drawback is the wasteland that is our development and rom community. Apparently those subtle differences in radios are enough to add months to equivalent distributions.
I knew I wanted a 7" tablet. First, I pre-ordered a Kobo Vox, based on spec sheet, and the idea that the specs seemed comparable to my phone, an HTC EVO Shift, also running Gingerbread. Found out that I was wrong.
So, I then knew I wanted a faster, better 7" tablet. But didn't want to pay >$400! Not too many choices that also got good reviews. And, thinking about it, did want 3G/4G--if not tied to a really costly monthly contract--so as to have ubiquitous access. Quickly found that there were few choices from the carriers, and expensive contracts.
Ended up back @ Sprint, my phone carrier. They had the Flyer @ $249, and their cheapest data plan was, under what else I had on my contract with them, $20/month. That was a winner.
I am very pleased so far; it does everything I wanted it to do, and at a quite reasonable cost.
The real difference between the Flyer and the View is where you'll want to use it when away from your home or office WiFi: if bothered by the idea of finding WiFi when out and about, go with the View. If not, go with the Flyer. The hardware and operating system, I think you'll find, do what you want them to do.
Ill always have my epic with me so its a portable wifi hotspot everywhere I go so its equivalent to the view if I get the flyer however I won't have a monthly payment I have decied on the flyer just because the development it has and its universal thank you for all your help in my decision.

The biggest issue with the choice between flyer and view, currently, is availability. You might luck up on amazon like I did and find a view cheaper than you can get a flyer, without the attached service plans.

Too early to say if it will have ICS, but the specs pretty much support it. 1.5ghz single core, 1gb ddr2.
Really going to depend on HTC if you get the 3G version or the CDMA View but I don't think you guys have CDMA across the pond.
IMO, nothing out there matches the Flyer/Flyer3G/Evo View for the price in 7" tablets. But CES 2012 may bring new stuff.

Its worth the money to me. I've wanted one since they were first released, but couldn't justify the high price tag at the time. I specifically wanted to be able to use the stylus for note-taking etc, so 10" quad-core tablets etc without stylus input wouldn't suit my needs.
I have LeeDroid's honeycomb ROM on it. Works great, and its nice to be able to use the stylus everywhere instead of just in the notes app.
I have no regrets regarding my purchase at all.

i got a wifi-flyer and got hc on it right now. i primarily got it to upgrade my old elocitya7(7") since i could not get hc on it working properly. you cannot compare to a quadcore tablet although it has stylus. the OS is now acting very different, and HTC has always made the OS weak because of resource issues and their launcher is still not perfect.
but generally ok, but unless its £179, its probably not the best buy.
if you do not want stylus capabilities, and still want a 7", you should look at Acer a100. its priced around the same level.
i am a little fan of htc widgets and always been so thats kinda second reason to get a 7" htc instead of tegra2 7" acer.
but the stylus is a nice addon, i tried it and appreciate having it now.
