[Q] CWM is not installed after Kernel replace? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
Good morning.
I have a SGS2, I had rooted with ChainFire ROOT kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399).
After the installation of the Kernel, I'd used an USB JIG (http://www.dealextreme.com/p/unbric...msung-t959-i9000-i897-m110s-i8700-i9100-93514) to remove the yellow triangle.
Then, I've installed the CheckROM 3.1.1 and the SiyahKernel 2.1.1...
Conclusion:
* I have ROOT
* I have the CWM if I press Volume Up+Home+Power
* I do not have the CWM app listed in applications.
Is this normal?
Am I doing something wrong?
Thank you in advance for your comments.
Regards!

CWM is an app not root .It is usually added to a custom rom .

OK, I get it.
But how I have another SGS2 (yes, I have my wife and mine)... And on mine which is running the same Custom ROM and Kernel... I do have the CWM app.
The only difference between hers and mine, is to remove the yellow triangle I used a USB JIG and on mine I flash a stock Kernel.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

to remove yellow triangle use cwm to install official kernel have the same number with the rom for example : jpkj ...etc ( zimage in sdcard)
than use cwm to install cf root sg2 ( extract zimage in sdcard)
------------------
i use siyah and speedmod but cwm5 have problem when launch so you can use cwm4 and try new kernel

Sorry, but I'm not asking how to root the phone.
I just want to know how can it be that I root the phone with the CF and I don't have the CWM app.
BTW, thank you for your reply... Is very useful, but I had already done that

[Help] Problem on the CWM backup function

When I use the CWM to make a backup, it reboots into the recovery mode (refer to the capture screen) and can not do the backup. What should I do?
(P.S. I have successfully done the backup once I rooted the GS2, however, I can not do it now)
Thanks for all your help in advance.
I believe you need Recovery 2e to be able to use all of CWM's functions. Have you flashed any of ChainFire's insecure kernels? If not, have a look in the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I have a simillar issue and I wondered if it was because I flashed the stock kernel over the top of the CF root kernel to get rid of the orange triangle - did you do the same?
When I rooted with CF only my backup worked but I had the orange triangle.

You're seemed to delete CWM through KERNEL overwriting or something similar. Try to flash with any kernel with CWM. The best way for such a recovery is to take CF root kernel with CWM. CWM will come back for sure
It happened to me too. When I tried CF's instructions to remove the yellow triangle I lost CWM Recovery (root and su remains), don't know what I did wrong (tried several times step by step). So finally I gave up and ordered USB JIG from ebay.
Hahaha, you could've just flashed a custom kernal again and there is your custom recovery. No need for that jig.

Using stock kernel after rooting

Hi guys,
I've rooted my Galaxy S2 using CfRoot. To disable the yellow warning triangle, I flashed with original kernel. Since, the root is enabled even after reverting back to stock kernel, do I need to flash insecure kernel image again using CWM manager?
Will I be missing anything by not doing it? Because, all the apps that needs root access are working fine.
Thanks,

You will lost clockworkmod recovery and the ability to use the CWM manager app.
So you will lose the ability to flash stuff from CWM zip, also nandroid backup.
But if these are not important to you then you shouldnt have any problems using the stock kernel.
Usb jig is the real simple way of removing triangle and setting custom rom counter to zero .

You are partially correct.
baskcoder, you did it correctly.
flash rooted kernel that has CWM APP using ODIN
boot phone into Android then reboot back to download mode
flash stock kernel using ODIN
boot phone back into Android
copy the rooted kernel of your choice (recommend using speedmod kernel by hardcore) into your phone using USB storage mode file can be either zImage or *.tar format
run CWM App in your application list, yes, it is still there as long as you don't wipe the userdata partition.
select flash kernel, then select either the zImage or *.tar file
CWM App will just wipe out the boot partition, then extract zImage from the *.tar file, then copy the contents inside zImage to the boot partition.
Because CWM App does not use Download mode to flash the kernel into the boot partition of your ROM, the yellow triangle exclamation will not appear, it will also not add to the custom binary counter either.
Thanks for the reply guys. I tried all the applications that need root access. They are working fine. What feature will I miss if I don't flash with modded kernel? Sorry, I'm new to this.
Thanks for the reply.

Clockworkmod recovery, the ability todo nandroid backup (full system snapshots), and the ability to flash zips via CWM recovery.

[Q] Installing Modified Roms

Hi,
Firstly I will mention I'm a noob. I hgavent installed a modified ROM before, I currently have the latest 2.3.5 KJ2 firmware which I flashed using ODIN.
I want to installed a modified ROM mainly to get a digitial battery display in percent on my notification bar. However it appears all these modified ROMS require flashing through your SD card. The problem is I dont have an SD card. Is there a way to do this through USB only (i.e. Odin)?
Also what ROM and kernel would best suit my simple needs?

save the rom of your choosing on your phones usb storage...there you can flash it easily...so download rom and you will find it if you go in my files then search the folder download and it should be there ready for you in a zip file..
just follow the instructions at the main page of the rom thread that you want to flash and you should be fine..
first though if you are not already make sure you flash a cf root kernel so you get rooted and then go ahead and flash a rom....once you have cf on then you should have cwm were you can flash your rom through there...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
follow the guide in that link (im sure you have done but its late here so sorry) and then will see you have cwm and then flash your rom of your choosing
I'm rooted but I rooted the old way --> flashed an insecure kernel, downloaded this program called S2 root and rooted via USB, then flashed the original kernel back. It appears that by doing it this way, I don't have clockworkmod recovery..
Should I always flash using the way you said?
Ok.. so let me go through the process..
1) Get a CF root Kernel which will allow me to have cwm. Question: Does the kernel version always have to match the 'ROM' version? When I updated to KJ2 I see that under phone info the 'Baseband Version' reads I9100XXKI4. Does baseband mean ROM, i.e. I have KI4 ROM but KJ2 kernel?
2) Flash following instructions from the modified ROM. I can simply store the rom on my phones memory and flash from there. Do I have to do anything after this? e.g. wouldnt I have to flash another kernel from that modified ROM, and in doing so would I lose my root and cwm? How important it for ROMS to match kernels?
Also, when I install the CF root kernel I get the yellow triangle on boot right.. I read the method on your link to remove it but it seems complicated. What is he actually doing to remove the triangle? Is he flashing back the original kernel?
The method he mentioned is the easiest way to flash a custom kernel, without having the yellow triangle.
The kernel doesn't have to match the ROM version. A custom kernel, e.g. like hardcore's speedmod (can be found in the original android section) installs root and CWM automatically.
Flash the custom kernel with Odin. The yellow triangle should appear after that. But CWM should be available and you're rooted now.
Reflash the original Kernel with CWM to remove the yellow triangle.
But wouldn't reflashing the original kernel using cwm defeat the purpose of flashing the custom kernel? Also do I use 'flash an update' or :?'flash a kernel's what's the main difference?

Any stock kernel is flashed through ODIN after rooting to get rid of yellow triangle. Afterwards, to flash any kernel of your choice, use DarkyROM tool.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.ficeto.darkyrom&hl=en
Just copy the kernel tar file in to your usb storage and you can flash the kernel within phone using darkyrom tool (no need of pc). Also this method won't give you back the yellow triangle again.
And to be safe, it's a wise idea to buy an USB jig to reset your binary counter.
Thanks for your help Droid. Interesting I noticed that I did not get the yellow triangle after flashing siyah kernel over cwm. Original kernel before that was the stock one modified as per crikelos instructions to get the speedmod.. is that normal?
Ohh I don't get the binary counter thing. Why do I need to reset it? And how and why can a USB jig do this? A link would help. Thanks!

KH2? CF Root Problems

I was going to root my S2 today as I have had it for a while and want to root and update my rom or install a custom rom. CF hasn't made an insecure kernal for KH2. A few users had the same problem and used KH3 as stated by CF but some ended up running into difficult problems and some had no problem.
Should I use KH3 to root or should I use another method. I only want to root gingerbread so I can back up app data. I might then factory reset and update the stock rom or flash CM10 and then restore the app data.
Try using siyah kernel, same process...flash via Odin but with siyah there is a .zip and a .tar make sure you choose tar

Firstly, CF-Root doesn't use insecure kernels, it uses modified kernels, but thats OK. Here is a link to a one click root solution made by a reputable developer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
Scroll down the first post and you shall find the instructions. I believe the second post has a link to all the insecure kernels, including KH2 (I checked), and if you scroll down that link a little more, you shall find your original KH2 kernel to flash back to stop the yellow triangle showing at boot, but if you are immediately flashing a custom ROM, that is fine.
This method however will not grant you ClockWorkMod so you can flash a kernel such as Siyah Kernel, make sure to download the GB kernel, not the latest ICS kernel! Here is a link to the GB kernel: http://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/2012/03/19/siyahkernel-v2-6-14/
Flash this using Odin. Put the .tar file in the PDA section on Odin once you have put your phone in download mode, killed off any Kies processes on your computer, and click start. This will add a new custom kernel to your phone, granting you ClockWorkMod Recovery, allowing you to flash a custom ROM.
Before progressing any further, back up your phone by booting into CWM (home button + power button + volume up button).
Also, download EFS Pro: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546 This tool backs up your EFS folder which contains your IMEI which can be damaged easily when flashing custom ROM's and you don't want to do that!

What if I want to just update my S2 to the latest stock rom and not have a custom rom. Do I have to flash back to the original kernel to be able to update the stock rom? Once I update to the latest stock rom, will my phone still be rooted or will I have to root it again?
You would have to root it again. But Chainfire should have all the modified kernels for 4.0.3 ready for your use anyway.

So after I flash the insecure kernel to root my phone (gingerbread), shall I flash back to the original kernel?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Yeah it stops the yellow warning triangle being displayed at boot. Your custom flash counter will increase but it can easily be reset by buying a USB jig off eBay.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
So I should flash back to original kernel and then update to ics and then root again?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Or just flash Siyah kernel via Odin and then flash a custom ROM which should automatically root your phone. If not, just find a CF-Root kernel for your firmware and all shall be good.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
There isn't a CF-Root Kernel for me which is why I created this thread to ask for the second best method to rooting a gingerbread S2 or if I should use KH3 CF-Root Kernel to root. I'm only rooting so I can back up app data using titanium. This is my first time rooting and flashing and I was going to root using CF-Root until I couldn't find a modified kernel for me.

[Q] I deleted SUPERUSER, now I can't root?

Hey guys basically is flashed my I9100 using ODIN with CF root kernel. It successfully rooted and I had superuser, CWM installed when I booted up my phone.
I only rooted to do a few things(like make phone sim free). Then I wanted to unroot it ( dont ask why (. I reflashed the kernel using my original kernel. But when I rebooted it the CWM and SUPERUSER app were still there and I still had superuser accessibility. So i removed superuser accessibility and deleted superuser but didn't delete CWM ( both were system apps).
Now I can't root my phone. When i flash using CF root kernel the phones restarts( and warning triangle shows ) but superuser isn't installed this time only CWM is but I can't use it since i don't have root properties. If i install superuser from market then it says su binary not found.

Thanks a lot mate it worked well, I am now re-rooted. BTW the yellow triangle appears in bootscreen when you have an insecure kernel installed.
