Can anyone help me on this, my GS2 loses it's default video file association on most reboots, and on a couple of occaisions without rebooting, I use the android video player for videos, which I check to use as default everytime I get the popup, also have quickpic and poweramp installed, poweramp is only in the choice box if it's an mp4, for all other video types it's a choice of video player or quickpic.
I've tried changing the video player apk for a newer version, an updated version of quickpic, and a 101 other things in the past week, and now have no hair left to pull out, this really does have me puzzled.
Obviously Android is losing the setting for some reason, does anyone know of a soloution ? seems completely ridiculous to me that the os can't even remember something as simple as which app to use to open a video file.

Sound But No Vision
HD video mp4 files taken with my Samsung mini video camera have until a few days ago played perfectly well via Video Player on my Tab 10. (with ICS).
Since last week after downloading the files via the usb connection from the microsd card as usual, when I use Video Player I get a box saying 'play audio data only' so no picture just sound. Previous mp4 files already downloaded into Gallery all play properly. I have converted these latest mp4 files to .wmv and they play fine but it is a mystery why this should suddenly happen.
I doubt it is the camera or the card as all the files on the card play properly on my PC and my wife's Tab2 7.1. I can't recall making any changes to my Tab 10 but there is always a possiblity that I have, unknowingly - at least that's my story
Any advice would be welcome but please treat me gently and bear in mind I am a novice in things Galaxy Tab. Things like factory restarts scare the whatsit out of me
PS; I have searched among old posts but any vaguely relevant are old and refer to Honeycomb so perhaps are not applicable.
How about try mobo player?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I have tried these players, MX, mobo, MVideo, Vplayer and HD player. It seems that my Tab does something to these later files which affects all the payers in some way although the Video Player that comes with the Tab is the only one that shows the dialog box saying 'play audio data only'
It sounds like an option has been made to only play the audio but I can't find it anywhere on the Tab or in Video Player that gives such a choice. Equally, there is the possiblity that I closed VP and stupidly chose 'force stop' which I understand may cause errors. What you do about that situation I don't know unless its possible to reinstall Video Player but I can't find a way of doing that as the app doesn't appear on Shop or Android apps stores.
I've had a look at the files using Cyberlink PowerDirector and it plays them perfectly and there are no queries with either its appearance or the 'techy' information presented for them.
I am no judge but perhaps it is one of those 'tap seven times in Settings' things that you read about in these threads.
So I have MX Video player installed and where I could I set it as the default video app player. However when in the standard browser or even in Chrome browser when clicking a video it still plays using the native video player on the GS4. I downloaded a tool to tell me what all of my defaults are and I cannot find anything else so I'm lost at the moment. Is there a way to override the "built-in" video player when in a browser so I can use MX instead? I am unrooted, stock on the Verizon GS4 16GB and have the ME7 update installed via Kies. TIA for any help.
Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Bump
Just took the DMI1 update and still I cannot get MX to be the default video player for some websites. Anyone know a way to disable the built-in video player that launches by default? What's the app's name and location and can I disable it? Thanks.
Settings, More, Apps, All, find Video Player. In the Video Player App Info page scroll down and tap Clear Defaults.
Now you'll be prompted next time you open a video asking which player to use.

Yeah, I checked that a long time ago. Both Video and Video Player, the purple circle with white triangle are not showing as default - they are both greyed out. That's what is so strange about this. Can't put my finger on it.
I went to apps, show all apps incl. system and searched for 'player' then I'd found some unknown player (can't recall its name); I'd uninstalled it and videos played well back again from Telegram. Weird.
I have posted before with no luck, but hoping someone has found a fix for it in the past few months..
Whenever I use my browser (Boat Browser or all the others I've tried) to watch videos, I no longer have the option to "Open" or "Download" the file, it just automatically plays in the built in media player.. I want to use MX Player..I used to have the option of what to do with the video, but same thing happening with built in player..I have made sure all defaults were cleared, and I even tried uninstalling the Gallery that is linked with the camera.. No luck.
I'm running 4.3 on my tablet, and still have the option so obviously it is a 4.4 issue, and not a browser issue. So just hoping I get lucky and someone has found a fix for it.. Appreciate any feedback!
Bump after editing.
Since no one is replying to my post, I decided to rewrite this again.
Problems:
Displaying "Samsung Galaxy Win GT-I8550" during boot
Most of the videos on YouTube (app) cannot be played
YouTube (app) and video players (Video Player or MX Player) is limited up to 360p
Crash when "Videos from the web" card is displaying on Chrome
Why do I care about these?
After countless times of installing custom ROM, I decided to revert back everything to default.
So, I installed I8552XXAMK1 on my phone with Odin3 and I found that my phone is displaying "Samsung Galaxy Win GT-I8550" when it is booting up.
I do know that GT-I8552 is just GT-i8550 but with dual SIM.
This problem might be the reason why my phone can't play any videos that are above 360p. (Problem 3.)
Recently, my phone cannot play most of the videos on Youtube. Even the videos that I used to watch with my phone cannot be watch now.
I uninstalled YouTube (uninstall updates) and I found that I can play the videos that I used to watch. But, after I installed latest version of YouTube, I cannot play them.
I don't want to use old version of YouTube since I really like the UI of latest version of YouTube.
So, I would love to know how to fix this problem without needing me to force myself to use old versions.
I think this problem is related to Problem 1.
My phone cannot play videos that are higher than 360p.
On YouTube, I always need to watch them in 360p, which is pretty hard to me when I am watching educational videos that involves text. Well, this is fine since I can at least watch them.
But, when I downloaded video that are above 360p (stored in phone), I cannot watch it at all. Unlike YouTube that allows me to change resolution, video players cannot.
So, I installed MX Player and needed to enable SW decoder to watch 480p and above videos.
Problem fixed? No, I want to watch videos on YouTube on 480p so it is easier for me to see things.
I really hate this one. Every time I am using Google, it always crashes when "Videos from the web" cards shows up.
Please help me fix this one because this is really disturbing me.
Please excuse my language since English is not my main language and I rarely ask for help online. You might noticed that my sentences are not really well-organised and really hard to read. I did my best to write this and I hope you reply to it.
I just picked up my S9+ this past weekend, so I'm a little behind the curve, but one thing I've noticed has me perplexed. I have movie files, videos, etc, that I've had saved on my card, that the native player doesn't play, so as I always do, I installed VLC Player. If I go to the My Files app and pull the video up, it will prompt and ask what player I would like, with the usual Just Once / Always option.
However, in the Gallery itself, it always defaults to the stock video player (which means those above-mentioned files will not play). At no point have I ever been presented an option from within the Gallery to pick a player. Looking in the Default Apps menu, there's the standard Home Screen, Browser, and so on but nothing for the Video Player. I've tried setting VLC as the default player from within My Files, and it does affect anything I play from there, but the Gallery doesn't hang onto that. It's very possible that I'm missing something, but if there's a way to change it, I haven't found it yet.
On a tangent to that, if there's no way to set the default media player to choose files from within the Gallery app, does anyone know any simple 3rd party Gallery apps that are similar in form and function to stock? I don't need a lot of bells or whistles - just albums, and MAYBE the option to hide/show folders but even that's nothing important. But most of the ones I've seen are all about trying to do something massively grand, which is more involved than I would need.
Cheers in advance.
I am having the same issue
Just bought Galaxy S9 and I had Xiaomi before
After I transferred all my files from the older phone to the new one I realized none of the videos from the older phone is supported in the new Galaxy S9 which is very disappointing.
I also downloaded VLC and tried to set it as default but didn't find any option to do that...
Why to set default,Open that app to play videos
