ok i have had several different android phones in the last few months and ive experienced this on all of them. whenever i receive a mms it always plays as a slide show. its always a 20s slide show and the first 10s is a blank black screen and then the second 10 is the picture. i can save and view the picture like any picture in my gallery. is there some way to disable it? i have tried different text replacements like go sms and handcent and they are still all the same. it doesnt matter what phone it came from. even when i send one it sends as a slideshow on my phone but just shows up as a picture on my gfs phone(iphone 3gs). i currently have a galaxy s ii but i have had a streak 5, atrix, and an inspire 4g. any help is appreciated
I had the same issue. Drove me nuts as well. I have recently started trying out Go SMS Pro and just verified that it does not do this. MMS pics come through as one would expect. You might give it a shot.
I had the same thing with the stock messaging app, even on MIUI. It is so annoying and literally the only reason I use Go SMS. Go SMS isn't perfect either (I don't understand why they don't automatically stretch the images to fill the screen, it's stupid to have to zoom in on every picture) but it's better.

Speaking of MMS, does anyone else get notifications when an MMS comes in that don't have the sender's name? A lot of the time it just says "1" instead of the sender's name.

I also have the issue of getting a message from "1." It goes away after I 'fetch' the picture though. I ended up flashing the mms.apk from h8s2 and it fixed that problem. I kept having issues when using GoSMS and Handcent so I have just stuck with the stock messaging app until someone comes up with a better solution.

Is there a possible a permanent texting program similar to the one provided by HTC where the picture is included with the text messages but that be the primary texting application. Instead of going to the old list of text messages and opening it. Have a picture next to the person your talking to, I sometimes forget who I'am texting lol I know it sounds bad but if i had the picture next the it at all times that would be cool

I'm guessing he wants to have his sms inbox looking like it does in sense 2.5, with the contact picture next to the message.
I would love to have this as well in my sms inbox on a regular winmo6.5 titanium rom, does anybody know if there is such a thing available? (with out using sense 2.5)
Try PocketCM contacts. You still get a list of messages per contact (which makes sense), but their picture is shown at the top of the list
On my iPhone I could select a photo taken with the camera and it would resize it to send via MMS.
This does not happen on my SGS II. It will just attach a 3MB+ photo it is will always fail. Any ideas how to get it to auto resize like the iPhone does?

Fix (sort off) for those that also have this problem:
After some investigation it turns out that the stock Samsung messaging app does not support photo resize for MMS. In the UK the MMS size limit is ~300kb so anything above this will fail. To solve this I had to install Handcent and replace stock messaging app.
Weird, i didn't do any flashing hacking yet as I wanted to use the stock firmware for a while to see how I liked it.
I send MMS all the time and kinda makes me mad as it seems to shrink them too small, 3MB picture down to 24KB. So with the stock MSG app it does resize photos just fine and sends them, i receive photos as large as 267KB so far too from other people.
Hey guys,
I have been using the Sprint/GV integration for a while now, and things have been great. Text has been arriving instantly on my computer, where I do most of my text communication. Now I have noticed that ever since Google updated to 0.4.2.36, my texts are delayed to GV's site and GVNotifier. If I open up the text on my phone, it pops up on my computer a few seconds later. If I leave the text unopened, it can sit for hours, or sometimes I'll get another new text 10-20 minutes later, and they will all spill out on my PC.
I believe it has something to do with some new settings and sync methods on the new app. Previously, you had the option of syncing your inbox, and it would even give you a warning about duplicate notifications. Now, that is gone. You simply select, GV-only, or both. Before, I had to disable GV notifcations, (including voicemail.) Now with this change, and sync settings, it's almost as if GV isn't getting my text until my phone syncs it with my GV account. Previously this tended to happen on the back-end, regardless if my phone was online or not. In fact, when I have my phone turned off, texts come through GV/GVNotifier just fine... Not sure what can cause the GV app to do this. I am considering removing it completely, but I like being able to search through my texts.
Has anyone else noticed issues since the new GV app was released?

I've experienced something similar...Sometimes, I will get a text on GV(site&app) but it will never come to my phone, and people have gotten angry at me for not replying, but it's not until I check the app or site that I notice I got a text message. This only started happening with the recent update to the GV app.
Another thing that bothers me is the inability to mark all as read from the site/app. Gmail does it..WTF Google? I have over 600 supposedly unread messages sitting on GV that I can't mark all as read. I have to manually go and mark a page at a time (which is around 10) until they're all marked, fail.

I have to go in daily and mark texts as read... Luckily I spend a lot of time on the website, but it is still annoying.
I too have the same issue with some texts only going to GV.... it's a bit more rare than the other problems, but it has happened about 5 times in the last few weeks. I find myself using the larger GV widget now, and checking it regularly.
BTW they just redesigned the site so you can select all and mark them read. I just do a label:unread then check 'em all.
So I just restored GV 0.4.2.32 on my Evo 3D, and all of the sudden my texts are arriving on my computer instantly, and things seem overall more consistent. I can't say for sure this is the fix, but it seems promising. I wish I had a later version, since this is from June.
Does anyone have the previous version we can reinstall? Mine is doing the same thing.. Im on the EVO4G.
Someone sent me a text at 8:05 PM last night.. I never received it.. HOWEVER, this morning I received a REGULAR TEXT MESSAGE (not google voice but regular phone text).. as soon as that one came through, so did the google voice text. This same thing has been happening every day for the past month. If I leave the APP OPEN with the phone on, it seems to work, but if not, my google voice texts and notifications seem to only come in when I get a regular text message... I can hear he regular text message notification sound and then right after I hear the google voice notification sound...
I assume if we go back to the previous version it will work again?
Thanks...

I found 0.4.2.24 which has the "Syncronize INBOX" and 'BACKGROUND DATA" settings and now its working again.. is there a never version BEFORE the latest update? it appears the newest vesion doesnt sync correct and you dont get messages or notifications UNTIL it syncs...

I used TITANIUM BACKUP and set the app to be disconnected from the APP STORE so it doesnt check for updates and the app store basically doesnt know it was installed from there.
Currently using Handcent as my messaging app (but have also verified this in the stock messaging app). Whenever I get longer type of texts from my friends (most using iphones) it shows as a MMS message.
Is there a setting I may have missed to stop this? It's getting really annoying.
Also, is there a way to disable that stupid slideshow when someone sends more than 1 picture in a text?
I text back and forth with my wife all the time... She has an iPhone 4S. I have never had any of her texts arrive as MMS unless they were that. I still use the stock app and running on the stock ROM unrooted. You said you verified this on the stock app, but was that ever before installing the Handcent app or only after?
As far as the stupid slideshow issue... I hate it too... Even if it's only 1 single solitary picture it will play the slideshow... Stupid... Not sure why, but I can't help with that.
Should be normal......... depending on how much you're typing. If you pass the length of 3 text messages, it automatically gets turned into mms to be able to send all of it in one go.
If you're typing less than 3 text messages worth and it still gets sent as an mms, you have a problem.

When I get a text while the screen is off, it shows up in the lock screen like it's supposed to. But if I pull the text down to the ring to unlock the screen, it will open up the text conversation at the 1st message in the convo instead of the most recent one. So I have to either:
A. Scroll all the way through the conversation down to the bottom, or...
B. back out to my list of threads and go back into the one from the person who just txt'd, at which point everything behaves like normal (showing the new text.)
Does anybody else get this?
I've had it happen a couple of times, not often though. Might be a silly question but have you rebooted the phone? I had a glitch when I first got mine with the audio and when I did a hard restart (with the fast boot option off) it fixed it. I've actually just left fast boot off because it starts up plenty fast no matter what.

I get this all the time. Not really a solution but an alternative to scrolling, you can touch the screen when in conversation and on the right a slider will appear and you can just slide this to the bottom. It scrolls by days so its much faster than just flicking through.
I don't know if anyone else has this problem but when I get a picture message, the date and time of the last text on the main thread screen (where you can see my conversations) for that conversation thread is always that of the pic message and only updates to the correct date and time of the last text when the pic message is deleted.

The messaging app is quirky as hell. It redraws on me SO many times; it's so frustrating. It constantly shows people's phone numbers before switching to the names. I also experience the bug mentioned in this thread quite often.
It's a shame, really. The messaging app is beautiful and I LOVE that it natively does group MMS - something I'm shocked that Google has yet to implement when it's a much coveted feature in iOS. Being a college student, I see group MMS used quite often, especially with group projects.
I would switch to another messaging app, but I'll miss the lock screen functionality. I also find the UI of most alternatives to be pretty ugly.

Man, I thought it was just me. Like another poster mentioned, the app is beautiful, but glitchy. Has anyone else noticed it switchingover to 3G and not switching back? My wife has a razr and has good signal when I drop to 3G. Seems like software, so maybe new radios will fix it?
I too experience redrawing and time being incorrect when a mms is involved in a thread between someone. And switching to the middle "sms/mms" tab does fix it. Also sometimes I'll have to back out to the main messaging screen and then go back to a thread in order for it to update. Example: I'll get a text, I go to the thread and then get another text from the same person right after. I know so because it shows up in the notification bar, but it won't show up in the thread unless I exit it and come back to it so it can refresh.
here's HTC's response as to why it redraws:
"As far as the SMS application, I have noticed that. To be honest with you, the SMS application just like the People application is only an application that is designed to read a database, it doesn't actually store the information. Not only this, but as you may already know, SMS is sent through the network as number only, so when the phone gets the message its actually nothing but a number and the contents (data/text). So, when the phone receives the message it places it in the dialer storage application's databases. Then the messaging application polls that database to load all the available message threads, then the message application polls the contact storage database to cross-reference all of the contact information with the information in the message, and finally it links the storage information from the contact database to the message"

very good point. and any other phone does this too. dont know why its a big deal here?
another issue I have noticed is if you are using the voice dictation with Google now to send a text to someone then that text may not show up in the messaging thread between you and that person.
Not to go too far off topic, but have any of you guys tried Handcent SMS? It's a free SMS/MMS replacement app that is so much better than any preinstalled messaging app I've used on Android.
You can have new messages show as a on-screen pop-up that can bypass the lockscreen and directly show you the message and let you reply from the pop-up. It also does group MMS (among many other options I won't go into detail about).
It's extremely more customizable than any Android stock messaging app I've seen, and it's the first thing me and all the friends I've told about it install on their new Android phones. Set aside 30 minutes to set all the options the way you want it, as there are many of them.
Stock htc one looks better in my opinion. I used to use go sms pro on my old incredible with aokp rom

Handcent just looks like a failed attempt at knocking off the iPhone messaging app. And its just heavy. The HTC one is polished and extremely smooth, and customizable to a reasonable extent.
