Hello to all my XDA'ers,
Question, So I now have my MSL#. What can I do with this number?? Can I fix the random reboots with this? Can I obtain better 3G service? What can I do now?
Thanks to all!
That's a very good question.
Okay, an MSL number benefits you in the following ways:
- Allows you to REPROGRAM your phone
- Access Hidden Menus
& More.
An MSL number does not allow you to:
- Fix Random Reboots
- Root Phone
Now, rooting the phone will allow you to:
- Get rid of Sprint Proxies, (which slightly speed up 3G, and 4G speeds, but doesn't allow you to use Sprint TV, not significantly on 3G, but possibly on 4G)
- Get Free WiFi Hotspot
& Much More.
If I helped you, don't forget to throw me a thanks, just click the thanks button!

Thanks for the response. I am currently rooted (stock rom). Unsure which ROM to use, I would like something that is fairly stable?? any suggestions??
as for the hidden menus that require the MSL - is there anything else other than ##3282#. I did see that there is a "hack" in which you change the IP's to 0.0.0.0 and the Ports to 0 - does this do anything for the Photon.
Yes ##3282# select multimedia hit menu button then edit
Then enter 6digit msl then done then change proxies to 0.0.0.0and ports to 0 then reboot
All it does is change the speed of 3g data slightly may not even notice.. it depends from device to device...its been a well known hack on the evo for awhile ..I do it on all my phones.. And other devices. If u wanna put back to original proxies and ports just be sure to right them down and same method then reboot
Stock proxys are
rtsp.vog.sprintpcs.com
Port 554
Pd.vog.sprintpcs.com
Port 8085
Dont loose your MSL code! !!!!!

Yes, there are a few other things than the ##DATA#, (##3282#), but I am currently unaware of them, there is a thread in the forums that show what the benefits of having the MSL Number. If I relocate it, I will add it to this thread.
The ROM that I would personally recommend is Joker Skinny ROM, it is the most stable as of right now.
@lojak29 - Thank you for your post, I was going to add the same thing. I appreciate it.
hey - thanks to you both for the information - it is EXTREMELY helpful.

hi all,
just recently bought a hero and sorry for the noob questions. any help will be greatly appreciated.
1.) How do i activate the green notification light for any new notifications? so far i can only use the trackball to flash for a number of minutes and thats it.
2.) how can i permanently use 3g as a signal without switching back to edge? i prefer 3g because it is faster, but when i use the web, it reverts to edge making it slower when browsing. i want it never to switch back to edge just 3g.
3.) How do you update radio and rom? is it the same with winmo? i have a topaz and im currently using hero.
Thanks for any feedback!
So far the only answer i found was the notification light as a bug or a defect. line switching is still unsolved and updating.

1) It works as it is stated in the user's manual. How can you state that it is a bug or defect? Funny... Just because it works that way on Magic or G1 does not mean that it has to be the same on Hero.
2) You cannot as your phone will automatically switch between them when one another is not available. You phone will select 3G only if it is available around where you are. If it switches to Edge/GPRS/whatever, that means you don't have 3G signals around you.
3) There are 1.000 posts on the forum here regarding updating ROM, etc. Search is our best friend.

You can force HSDPA, but you do so at your own risk!
You need to download AnyCut from the Market and create new shortcut to the activity "Phone Info". From this short cut, you access a screen which gives lots of diagnostic info about the phones state and there is an option to "Set preferred network type". By default this is "WCDMA Preferred", but if you want to force to always use HSDPA you should select "WCDMA Only".
Note if you do this, your phone will never drop back to 2G, even if a 2G signal is available and a 3G one isn't.
I wouldn't advise playing around with any of the other options in this screen unless you know what you are doing!

Dave

very interesting. because for my topaz i always set it to wcdma only. willing to give it a try. where can i download it? do i need a gmail account for this? cant find it any website where it can be downloaded.
Android software is downloadable via the Android Market application on your hero - any purchases are made by using a google checkout account which is set up like paypal so you don't need to enter your details all the time...

I feel like I just have to ask... why would you want to turn off 4G? if you have no 4G in your service area, the phone already automatically switch down to 3G

To minimize battery drain when you're not needing/using data? I guess you could leech wifi as often as possible too but know many people have asked about disabling 4G, I can only assume its power consumption related.
Don't pull out the SIM card. What happen if you loose it? You'll be ended up by paying additional charge for replacing new sim card.
The good way to disable 4G is just type:
*#*#4636#*#* when you want to make call.
Then, scroll down until you see the word says "CDMA + LTE/EvDo".
Click that and change it to "CDMA PRL Auto".
If you want to use 4G, just do the steps above, and instead of "CDMA PRL Auto", change it to "CDMA + LTE/EvDo" (you can also change to "LTE mode" if you want 4G only).
Hopefully, it will help you

You can "automate" this is a way by downloading an app called "Phone Info" by [email protected] It allows you to enable/disable 4G. Basically does exactly what dialing would do but is faster and easier.

Thanks for the link. My app drawer's cluttered enough with apps, though; maybe after we get root and can remove all the bloat/crap-ware.
I usually just add a contact with all the dialer codes so I don't have to memorize them. I'm in a 4G area, so don't really see the need for this personally, but nice to know the trick anyways.

I used to have the same issue with a cluttered app drawer (I'd uninstall apps I used occasionally just to shrink my app drawer). I started using ADW Launcher EX a while back and it lets you make different app drawer versions. Basically you can choose which apps show up in the app drawer, so you can hide all the bloatware icons and leave the apps you use all the time. Then when you want one of your rarely used apps, just switch to the "ALL" app drawer and it will show every app installed on your phone. Just a suggestion, I found it to be really helpful.

So, what's the way to use Thunderbolt in overseas CDMA networks that doesn't offer 4G LTE service.
Is manual PRL programming (mean ##DIAG mode) or R-UIM card possible solution for this problem?
If you use LauncherPro you can create an Activity to go directly to the phoneinfo screen. I use this all the time to turn off 3G on my Droid1 when I'm at work thanks to no 3g at all.
Long press the home screen, add shortcut, then Activities. Select Settings and scroll down for what seems for ever until you see Phone info and select it.

actually you are wrong... the law states that you can not change the esn of a phone period...
In an Order, the commission adopted a rule (22.919) requiring that all cellular telephones for which type acceptance is sought after January 1, 1995, must be designed such that the factory-set ESN can not be reprogrammed. At the same time, the commission stated that it considers any knowing use of cellular telephone with an altered ESN to be a violation of the Communications Act (Section 301) and alteration of the ESN in a cellular telephone to be assisting in such violation. The Wireless Telephone Protection Act (Public Law 105-172) was signed into law on April 24, 1998, expanding the prior law to criminalize the use, possession, manufacture or sale of cloning hardware or software.
The cellular equipment manufacturing industry has deployed authentication systems that have proven to be a very effective countermeasure to cloning. Authentication supplements the use of the ESN and MIN with a changing encrypted code that can not be obtained by off-the-air monitoring.

How do I backup all of my flashed Boost mobile settings?
You folks seem to be a very knowledgable crowd, perhaps you can help me with this.
I just purchased an Evo 3d and had it flashed over to boost at my local boost store. Upon picking it up from them he went over a few things, most of which made perfect sense like not updating certain things because it will set me back to sprint but the one thing that did not is he said no hard resets. Problem being most if not every custom rom either automatically or advise you to do a factory reset from custom recovery. How am I supposed to flash my precious cyanogenmod with that hanging over my head lol? So I've been trying to learn how to flash using cdma workshop and qpst so that I can copy/backup all of the already flashed Boost info so that if things go wrong Im good. Also I hear some of the non-SENS based roms require little workarounds to keep data and mms going which also would probably require a copy of the Boost flash info. Things like the AAA shared secret and HA secret etc.
Any insight to this problem would be most appreciated!

Hard reset and factory reset are different. The factory reset option won't interfere with your boost service....After you flash a new rom all you'll need to do (w/every flash) is ##data# go to advanced scroll to mms url and change it to http://mm.myboostmobile.com or if you're not on a sense rom I think you can go to messages- settings-MMS-connection settings and change the MMSC field to http://mm.myboostmobile.com
That should be it...remember boost uses sprint's network so there is little to worry about as far as compatability.
Lastly to backup your boost configuration..get QPST and use that to read your phones current configuration (network Info) and then save it with qpst and you should be fine.

Mr. louforgiveno: First off thank you for the quick and diligent reply. Pertaining to backup and restore using QPST; should my phone loose its boost flash I would press "Load from File", select the previously saved QPST data file and then press "Write to Phone" and it will restore me to boost mobile settings?
I flash/wipe anything I want from recovery and I have a boosted 3d. I guess it wouldn't hurt to have a qpst backup but have never had anything happen to my boost service from flashing/wiping. I use apn backup n restore to restore boost mms settings after a flash, easy as cake. Ics u can't restore apn involves alil more work prior to flashing I believe. As far as the factory reset within the rom, idk, haven't come across the need to use it...

Lost flash after updating to 2.17 w/o HBOOT 1.50
So it finally happened, I lost my flash. Everything was going fine, even downgraded to 1.4 hboot using recent XDA method, but after that I saw an updated firmware without the 1.5 hboot update by xHausx and used it thinking it would be fine since all the other PG86IMG and RUU's have flashed perfect.
As I posted earlier, I backed up and everything with qpst and CDMA-WS but after restoring from backup it looked like it put everything back (it even said BOOST at the top) but I was wrong. When ever I try to dial out it tells me my account cannot be validated and of course I have no 3g either due to lack of service.
I've looked over every setting using every # code and I cant seem to find anything wrong with the configurations and APN restore does nothing.
I was very paranoid about modding a flashed phone at first so I was very thorough, besides backups I also took many notes on the info the # codes and qpst/cdmaWS provided before making any changes at all.
Which makes me ask if the fact that QPST keeps changing the ESN is creating and issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

That explains it enough. Flashing to another carrier does not change the ESN. Boost, Cricket, MetroPCS allow non-carrier ESN's on their network, that's why flashing is allowed. You can technically flash a phone to Virgin Mobile, but, here is where the problem is: Virgin Mobile does not allow non-Virgin Mobile ESN's on their network.
Did that idiot get banned?
With the constant ROM switching (Thank you, devs, SOOOOO much!) I was wondering if it is possible to use the wi-fi protected setup button to set up my connection instead of typing in my passwords. I don't see anything about it in the settings so, is it available?
Aaaand nobody has responded, so I think the answer is no. I was wondering the same thing ... This post is the first Google result that comes up for a relevant search on WPS for the Evo 4G LTE.

That is how I set my EVOLTE up at my friends place. Don't remember the exact process, took me a couple tries before I got it right.
I might suggest getting WIFi Recovery key from the play store. Once your keys are in place you can export and/or share your keys in a plain text file.then you could just copy/paste It does work for me. I'd have 4 different ones to setup.
One thing I did when I switched from my EVO3D was copied the file from it to my new EVOLTE and then copy & paste from the text file.

So I did a restore using the LG tool and I am missing the wifi calling app. I can't seem to get it at all from any source, I've read some discussions about it but haven't gotten anywhere with it.
Anyone have some advice ? Ive tried all the ## diag numbers and all of that to try to get the sprint software to load but it doesn't load the WIFI calling app or any other sprint apps.
Can someone maybe provide me with the APK ?
Hopefully this helps!

I am not sure how to make this stuff active..I've tried every procedure possible on this to get it enabled. ##RTN# and nothing no Sprint boot or shutdown or Sprint apps including the wifi calling.
I'm not sure if it's a blessing or now I can't use any of those features anymore.

I've used the tool 5 times to get back to stock (things I've tried that don't work, never with the build prop except the multi window) and not once has all the apps installed. I.e. wifi calling. You must know your msl. Once you know that you're golden. Restore back to stock. Don't bother with downloading or really setting up anything. Go to phone, dial ##rtn#. Option 2 i believe, put in your msl and bingo. It will restart have you sign in again and all that jazz and whalla. Wifi calling and all the other Sprint bs is back. Have any questions please ask.

No. After RTN reset re-root with Stump.
