The Perfect Photon? - Motorola Photon 4G

Just trying to get a layout of the MoPho landscape. Are any of you having issues with your phone or do you have a "perfect" MoPho?

The hardware for me has been "perfect".
The software you install and user error determines whether it remains "perfect".
just saying.....

This is true. I really haven't had any of the issues that others have experienced, but once in a while it does seem a tiny bit laggy but that is due to / and usually happens after i install an app or game that isn't up to par.

I think this phone is just about as perfect as a stock phone can be. I currently have a rooted phone (stock ROM) - downloaded spare parts and set it to fast, I also am using Go Launcher - love being able to change the themes. I must say that this phone is FAST and very responsive. It does reboot from time to time (been over a week since last one) - but I must say it is the best phone I have owned, and I have owned quite a few!!!

Haven't had any issues with mine. Running stock rooted on latest OTA.

Unlocked/rooted/running jokerstock rev1 with joker's OC 1.3 kernel and Joker's theme
Before my photon, I had the epic 4g. I like this phone so much better. even when it was stock, the phone impressed me. now it's fast, smooth and awesome. totally perfect !!

No problems here. And get data where I didn't get it before. Best phone I've ever owned!

Well, maybe my two Photons have been duds. I'll wait a few more days to see if I need to get a replacement. I'm testing a few things...

My phone sucks. I get random reboots atleast three times a day. A lot of times data takes forever to kick in once screen is woken up. Somes when making calls phone hangs when connecting. Ill never buy another motorola phone again.

I've encountered the reboots and sleep of death, but they are few and far between. My old phone encountered the same things from time to time. I have been amazed with the performance of this phone otherwise.

Only 3 random reboots per day? That would be a huge improvement for me!

Never had one random reboot. Maybe a app or a faulty root you guy's applied? Mine is flawless.

you want a crappy phone? go buy a samsung moment then you will have something to ***** about

At stock I fell victim to the sod, and maybe one reboot every other week. Since roming I have zero issues unless my phone gets to hot lol

Mine is pretty much as good as it gits, a few random lockups and slowdowns and maybe 1 reboot a month, i am very happy i use the **** out of my phone and this had been the best one i ever owned, data and signal is great and super fast, phone speed is fast even with the moto animations which tend to look slow but that is how they are sped them up a bit with spare parts. Great phone can't wait for the tegra 3. Oh yeah battery life is great, phone in general is so much better than the epic, epic touch, and nexus, Samsung sucks had so many problems with them, never again.

Well Once motorola starts to help us out more (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH rigggght) We may finally make some ground. I currently have an electrify (basically the same phone) and although u.s. cellular is somewhat small I feel the electrify users may help the fan base. As for mine the only problems I have noted are short periods where the bottom portion of the screen starts to lag terribly.

Well I don't think that is true in my opinion. The leak that yagg got actually came from Moto if I am not mistaken. And Moto has (again in my opinion) provided more updates than the phones from HTC or Samsung I've had previously. Except for the locked bootloader I really can't complain about this phone.

Thinking about selling my iPhone and getting the Atrix. Is the Atrix rock solid??

I have been kicking around getting the Atrix as my first Android cause I love my friends HTC Incredible so much but I am on AT&T so the Atrix looks like a good one to me, but I am just wondering if this phone has any bugs that need to be worked out as far as software or hardware goes? Thanks
The bugs on the ATRIX is due to MOTOBLUR. You can set the ATRIX free if you root and unlock it

My experience with the Atrix.
I've had the phone for 3 days. Overall it's an amazing device. However, since I've had it the main issue has been reboots&crashes(my phone is not rooted). The funny thing is when I'm using it, it has never rebooted or crashed, but when it's idle it tends to crash frequently(about 10 times per day). As of now, I'm still trying to figure out what's causing this. So far from what I've found on a few android forums suggests that the problem only exists on some devices. There are some Atrix phones that don't have the rebooting problem at all.

Oh, okay so it's kind of like a Volkswagen where one is great and the other is junk? Ha ha just playin. But I take it that this is not really a common problem with this phone but you just got unlucky, and maybe another handful of people?
Or maybe like Mr flo said up above that it's all because of Motoblur?
Imo wait till October or November. There will be a whole new line up of phones coming out. The Atrix is epic but there will be better in the new future.

forget trying to figure out whats wrong and exchange it for another if you can, thats something in the hardware most likely
Overall it's a solid phone, and almost every iPhone user that made the changeover usually posts that they are happy they left the iPhone for the Atrix.
In the end you are getting a dual-core phone with a 1GB of RAM and a large battery.
Plus this phone just got the BL unlocked, so that means you will have CM7 and Ice Cream Sandwich in some form (possibly even official)...

The ATRIX is future proof....these current and upcoming dual-core phones have only matched the ATRIX. I have a custom rom and kernel....and my ATRIX flies

"future proof" makes me happy I just realized that I just made 10 posts! Ha ha!! I'm FREE!! Now it's time for me to go into the DEVELOPMENT THREAD and cause some real trouble, ha ha.
i have had mine for about 3 days, no reboots and whatnot. I am liking the way the phone feels and works. calls are clear via bluetooth speakerphone and the regular earpiece.
ive ditched the default messaging app for chomp sms(its basically bitesms but better and smoother in alot of ways, same dev team if im not mistaken). and im not using the default launcher anymore, launcher pro seems smoother.
anyway hardwarewise the phone is awesome, even with the motoblur on it in a nonrooted oem rom. with that said i plan to root and try out some different roms in the near future

This is my first android phone and I love it! I've already rooted and unlocked it. I've flashed several ROM's already and have had excellent results. There have been a few reboots and connection issues but nothing to seriously complain about. My current ROM has taken care of all that and I'm getting over 30 hours of battery life without changing anything. I don't know about "future proof" with LTE coming but it will be tough to find a better phone
I have 2 in my household.
The wife's is as stock as stock can be and it is rock solid. Never had an issue with the phone. No force closes, no issues, just a solid work beast. Nearly, only nearly mind, rivals a Berry for battery life.
Mine on the other hand has gone through the wars a bit as regards reliability BUT all of those issues were my fault not the phone.
I am like most of those posting here in that I do like to play and tinker with ROMs, apps and anything else we can think of playing with. The upside is that after that learning curve I have a phone that is fantastically quick, great battery life and not really going to be left wanting for much over the next year or two as regards hardware.
Same as most android's really it is what you make of it. If you want a solid work beast, it can do that. If you want to play, you can do that.
Importantly though is that the initial learning curve has been gone through, mostly on this great forum, so if you want to root, mod, unlock the bootloader and whatever else may come make sure you research it.
There is only one rule really. If you unlock the bootloader and use the official AT&T Gingerbread update NEVER go back to Froyo. Remember that and now it is quite hard to mess up.
I know I have tried !
Wow, thanks a lot guys... I think this will be my first Android after reading what you all have said about this phone. Thanks for taking the time to give me your opinions, and to the guy that hates the phone... Dude I'm really sorry you got a dud.

Alright, so this phone needs some serious consideration. Of Course, this phone probably didn't fly as much as it was promoted, I still guess its promotion was a little weaker than I expected.
I have been using Atrix since its launch. About 8 months and never had any issues with my phone.
Phone durability - Rock Solid, even though you can feel the plastic all around, but the phone is light in weight, and it still is very sturdy. Have dropped it a few times(Of course with a cover on top - so no scratches) but even after those many drops, phone is absolutely fine.
Screen - First qHD display. Truly amazing. I feel it better than iPhone's retina display, trust me when I say it, have used iphone 4 and exchanged it with Atrix.
Call Quality - SubPar. No noise issues. Whenever I receive a call, the person on the other end never complained.
Speakers - Loud and clear enough. Even when I put phone on speaker while driving, it is just clear. Loud enough to fill my car with voice easily.
Biggest Bonus - Unlocked Bootloader. Means, this phone is now free. With lots of Devs now coming up with new ROM's, and CM7 on its way, I have heard that MiUI is also coming to Atrix in near future, it is just an amazing feeling that how much customization is available for the phone, with Devs spending days and hours, it is just truly phenomenal.
Processor - with Dual Core 1GHz processor, this phone has got the raw power to beat up the competition. I feel, phone is fast enough to give solid competition to the upcoming new android variations, upcoming iphone and so on. As someone earlier said, it is a future proof phone, not only because it has got the Dual Core processor, but because it has got Dual Core processor, even today, there are many phones which still get released with 1GHz Single Core, I think for next couple of years 1GHz Dual Core processing speed is safe from getting extinct. Also, the fact that Atrix can now be OverClocked to 1.3GHz, man you should see this phone, just totally flying with that much power.
Camera - As promised by Motorola earlier at the time of launch, with GingerBread, phone will be able to do 1080p, and yes it does it. What else would we need?
Another Bonus - Finger Print Scanner. Just unique by itself. No more words needed to explain what it is.
Last but not Least, Battery - Solid. Usually, I have always seen people be able to get around atleast a day out of the Atrix battery easily. Now with different applications available to help us save the battery, it is even easier to get more out of it.
Webtop Dock etc... - Personally I don't use any other accessories for Atrix, so no idea, but have heard they all are also similarly amazing.
If I missed out on anything, I am pretty sure, I have got something good to say about it, as long as it is related to (M)Atrix.
If you got the phone, you should be happy. If you are thinking of getting one, go for it. If you dislike it, it is your personal choice and I am sure people will respect it.
Cheers!!!
Well Guy's!! I took your suggestion (besides that one guy) and I got the Atrix! Thank you thank you!!! I love this phone already. I have the bootloader unlocked, rooted, clockwork recovery, and the Alien ROM installed. Awesome phone, thanks so much for you help. After having the iPhone and then switching to this phone, there are so many things and so many ways to customize this phone it's insane. I almost don't know where to begin. See ya out on the forums!
I wouldn't have gone with the atrix personally. I had one. Froze a lot, soft rebooted A LOT, screen was not accurate to touch and would become unresponsive at times, not to mention it was SLOW(for being a dual core tegra phone). Like others say though, its mostly personal preference. I may have also had a bad one. I've owned many androids and I personally rate the atrix worse than a poopy aria.... its on the bottom of my list. I got my nexus s now and have never been more pleased.

Should I buy it?

I was in the sprint store today getting my evo shift repaired and saw the photon and thought it looked and felt great. Sine then I did some research and there are a lot of unhappy Customers.
Does this phone live up to the hype?
Yes, this is the best phone on sprint right now all phones have their quirks and this one has some but it is by far the best phone I have ever owned. major upgrade from a shift.

I switched from the shift 4g and I also gave the epic touch a try. I agree that this is the best phone on the market. It has great signal and call quality , great battery life and a large, bright screen that is easily usable in direct sunlight. Motorola has been very, very good about updates and I would not be surprised if this is one of the first phones on sprint to see ice cream sandwich. Grab it, you wont regret it.

I'm on my fourth Photon. I have the random reboot issue. Lately my launcher has been acting weird. All the icons get jumbled together. As it stands the phone is garbage.

Can't go wrong with getting this phone. Fast out of the box, easy to root (haven't messed w/ the bootloader yet), and w/ Google purchasing Moto Mobile, there is no logical reason why this phone WON'T get continuous updates for quite a while. Plus development is picking up....

Are you running a custom launcher? I had a similar issue when using Go launcher, I installed launcher pro and the issue was gone. It was the launchers problem not the phone.

I came from Epic with the super AMOLED screen. This screen is not as bad as some would say. After a few days I don't even notice. The rest of the phone is top notch. I love having more reception than everybody else. The battery life is great. It's very fast and has a superior GPU to GSII. GSII also has lots of problems (loss of signal, rapid battery drain) and no updates in sight after more than a month. Evo 3d doesn't have the internal memory to keep more things off of SD card, which speeds things up. In my opinion, there isn't a better dual core at Sprint.

I left tmobile and the vibrant and came to sprint. I had the epic for about 2 weeks when the photon dropped. I was not a fan of the 3d and wanted a phone with great battery life and a bright screen in the daytime. This phone has exceeded my expectations. I do however wish the stock launcher wasn't so laggy, but Launcher Pro fixed that. Although their aren't many roms flowing in the forums I remain positive that there will be. Also this phone has the best reception for signal and wifi I have ever seen. I love it, and would recommend it over sprints other phones at the moment.
I would imagine most, if not all, of the people having problems with their MoPhos were running older firmware. When I first received the phone, it was running 45.2.5(?), which is 3 updates old. It was snappy, but I had horrendous battery life. However, after the updates, it's even faster and the battery life is fantastic. Moreover, reception is much better than any other smartphone I've played with.
You'll notice that on the Sprint website, the MoPho is not as highly rated as the Epic Touch. I assumed that was from the early adopters who were frustrated with the phones before Motorola released the updates.
You'd be hard pressed to find a better phone from any carrier. Sure, several phones on the market have a larger screen and/or faster processor, but I doubt any of these phones have the MoPho's battery life.
Lastly, of any phone on the market, I think we'd be one of the most likely to get the long-awaited Ice Cream Sandwich.
When I got my Photon I was going back and forth between this and the GSII and in the end the geek in me won out. I got the Photon for the HDMI out, and the webtop feature. I don't think "stock" webtop is super useful or interesting in it's current state but I think it has so much potential. I can see Google replacing the current linux build with a version of chrome OS, even if it doesn't hit my phone. I am confident it could be ported in the future. I've only started to play with modding the webtop partition but I've already learned so much about linux as well as it's similarities and differences from android. As an intermediate user I love to get in and mod my phone and webtop gave me a new challenge to expand my knowledge. Plus it's a dead sexy phone. I miss my super amoled screen on my epic4g but that will fade. I'm gald I got the photon and I look forward to future development.
I'm super happy with my Photon. I came from the Evo to this phone. It's worth the upgrade in my opinion. And a lot of the people that are unhappy with it are either because A) there isn't enough ROM's and **** to customize it or B) they did something to **** the phone up then blame the phone for their mistake. There are a couple of people that have legitimate issues, but most of those have been fixed via updates. Of which have come out quickly, so it's worth it IMO.
Yes... absolutely, yes. Especially now that we have a lapdock.

This phone is a beast...definity meets my needs!

I know that there are probably other threads just like mine but I just had to get this off my chest.....for everyone that's disrespecting this phone and saying its a slouch, slow etc.
Some of you may know me from selling/trading phones over in the marketplace. I've had every high end phone on Sprint, some phones I've owned twice or even three times. Nevertheless, I got rid of them because I just didn't like the phone or wanted something else.
Well, I got me another Photon and I come to find that I really like this phone. True it has some issues that's in my opinion is very minor. Those issues consist of the small amount of laginess when unlocking the phone and for some reason when ever I'm typing the vibration of the key press just stops. Then it starts back after I stop typing again...I don't know what's up with that...but those are the only two issues I have with this phone.
Now as far as the good, the reception is out of this world. I get excellent service and bars where I got no or little service on both my NS4G and E4GT. The only phone that came close is my iP4s. I went to the mall here where I live and while the wife and kids were doing some shopping, I decided to pull out the Photon and surf the web. I was expecting that the data would be slow to non existence. But to my surprise, data was working and fast too. Again, this wouldn't have never happened on my NS4G or ET4G. The speaker on the photon is a beast as well. It definitely blows the NS4G out of the water. The E4GT has a good speaker too but begins to crackle at a certain volume.
Not to mention all the accessories that's available for the photo. I'm currently in the market for lap dock
If I'm just blabbing, I apologize. I'm just giving this device some love. I'm already talking my co-worker into getting an Electrify on US Cellular.

I'm getting this phone September 1st. Any issues I should be aware of?

This will be my 3rd HTC phone. Had the HTC Hero first, HTC EVO, and now I will be getting the EVO 4G LTE model sept 1st when I'm allowed to use my 2 year upgrade. I would like to know if there are any specific problems with this phone. I read a few things after it came out about the battery overheating easily, and also an issue about you losing the wifi card function thing. I really dislike the fact that the battery is built in. No way of changing it if it loses its capacity over a few years (unless you take the phone apart maybe). Are these issues still there, and are there any new ones? I will be rooting it day one of course as long whatever version I get then will be rootable at the time.

If you root you'll be fine, I haven't had any overheating at all and I'm overclocked to 1.9. The battery life is great. There's also a video out there on you tube showing how to change the battery and it looks pretty easy. Best phone I've ever had by far, coming from the og evo you'll be quite happy. Welcome aboard.

The multitasking problem is the biggest flaw with the phone. Apparently some of the ROMs have improved things but I haven't rooted yet so I don't know for sure. I don't think any have fully fixed the problem (could be wrong though) Basically if you switch apps and then switch back to the original app it will reload. Very annoying and wastes a few seconds every time you switch apps. Hope it will get fixed in an OTA soon.
Otherwise it's great, the camera and screen are fantastic.

If you are looking for flaws, you will get all the answers you want. So far this is the best phone I've had. Ask for what makes this phone great and it will be the best phone you can have. You can take the best pictures, best screen resolution.

The evo is a great phone. The battery does tend to get warm during heavy usage as with all phones but it doesn't "overheat". The wifi issue some people had was due to the trash ui that is sense which was fixed during the latest ota. Since you said the you will be rooting day one the mean rom fixes the multitasking issue and does improve your battery life considerably as does boost performance. Whether you get hboot 1.15 (the latest ota) out of the box or not, you will still be able to root your just won't be able to get s- off which you don't really need to begin with. The evo is the best Android smartphone on the market Imo and you should definitely get it. I have the evo gs3 and the one x and I can safely say the evo is the best one out of the three.

You'll be impressed. The design grows on you. I used to love the One X design but as time passed, I realized the EVO just looks like a beastly powerhouse. Multitasking and possible WiFi drop issues, you're good to go. Check out some other launchers if you get bored of sense.
Had the phone since day 1 and I'm still impressed. In a way, I feel bad for people on other phones. They just don't know what they're missing out on.

If you'll be hanging around theEVO 4G LTE forum, you'll find a lot of threads created by people asking for opinions on buying this phone.

If your in an area with LTE turned on and the coverage is spotty at best, be prepared for it to have problems switching back to 3G.
It will get stuck on 1x or you will have no data untill you reboot..
Yeah its easy to take battery out, but my friends, there is no battery on the market, to replace it with.. i checked everywhere, anyone have an answer to this... is there a battery on the market we can put in the evo 4g lte, when it goes bad.. and i dont mean extended

Watch out for light bleed from the home button when the screen is dark. Some phones have it, others don't/
3G speeds suck, multitasking on the phone works when it wants to and sense is... well sense. the hardware is fantastic. once the devs crack the aosp code I'm flashing it and this phone will better than the gs on every aspect. Those 2gb of ram will mean nothing.

All true.
Considering the JB AOSP ROM by Deck is already almost ready to be a daily driver, I'd say by September 1st the OP will have no issues taking full advantage of this phone's hardware! This Jellybean upgrade is SO much better than I anticipated. WOW!

If you rely on IMAP/POP or Exchange for E-mail, you'll find the HTC mail app is flawed...
The issue with rendering font sizes on HTML messages PISSES ME OFF to no end. I want to drive up to the nearest HTC office and throw this thing through their window.
HTC built a pinch-zoom feature in the mail and messaging apps. I prefer the smallest font sizes available, and the "small" setting is barely sufficient on SMS threads. E-mail is a different story as the font/size preference is completely ignored on HTML content. Not only do you have to tap to "display images" on EVERY E-mail, the text also appears ridiculously large, to the point where the message won't fit on a single screen and must be scrolled/panned.
I don't see how/why ROMs haven't addressed this issue yet and I've tried Fresh and MeanROM already. I'd like to ask them about this problem but I don't have enough posts yet to bring this up in the dev forums.
Does EVERYONE use GMail exclusively or what?

Happy With the G

I got my G in yesterday. I replaced my atrix with cm10. I really dont miss cm10 either. I did root this phone so I could install titanium, remove bloat and install my old apps. I was wondering if there is some way to add weather to the lock screen. One issue I did have happen, it shut off completely one time, no button pushing revived it, I ended up plugging it to power and it responded. I see that might be an issue at some point, you cant remove the battery, so that makes me a little leary of unlocking or putting a new rom on, if it stuffs I cant turn it off
Easy process. And if you double get in a bind it may be easier for you to fix.

Dude did you replace an atrix 4g with the LGOG? ...I DID THE SAME THING! Man I love this phone ^.^ my atrix was a tough cookie though.

I also upgraded from the original atrix. Very happy with the performance of this phone. I do miss a couple of things from the atrix though: better battery life, ability to use standard wifi tethering and the customizable car dock app.

Seems Like we have alto of former atrixers here. Ditto for me it was my first android and still serves as my multimedia dock for my lil Sony psp t.v.

I have to admit, when the news came out earlier that the Nexus 4 is back in stock I briefly considered throwing my Optimus up on Swappa/Craigslist/whatever and getting one.
Ultimately, I'm perfectly happy with the G. Especially now that we have JB source and the devs can go crazy with it, I'm hoping we're not too far away from a CM or a true AOSP ROM. Heck, I'll probably be perfectly happy with the JB ROM we have already once the storage issue gets fixed, as the camera isn't really all that important to me. Sure, it's nice to have, but I've got a dedicated camera for when I want to do serious photography.
With our JB ROM, what's the real difference between the Optimus G and the Nexus 4 aside from the obvious not having to go through AT&T for updates? If we never get Key Lime Pie or anything official from AT&T period (even the JB OTA), my feelings might change, but for a device that people say has lacking dev support it doesn't seem all that bad.
Heck, knowing how much I like flashing ROMS having only a few of them may be better for my sanity
Former atrix user here too. Captivate-Atrix-i777Sii-LGOG. Atrix and LGOG win all the candy for battery life.

i really wanted to use my atrix forever, but it has a failing digitizer, the headphone jack quit working.
I switched from the Note 2 to the G and I can tell you the G is far more responsive and quick in day to day use. It's like night and day.

I love my Atrix but I found out that CM10 and Jokersax is a little too buggy for normal use - might just be me though. I used the epinter and it worked great but my battery was instant dead all the time (even with tweaks and extended battery )
I love seeing all these former Atrix users picking up the LGOG and loving it! My only concern is the battery life since I am a heavy user. Super heavy I am almost always on it even at home. I have been playing with the floor model at my job and really cannot see any faults besides the battery but LG and other OEM users claim that the "eco-mode" does the trick in conserving the battery. The floor model does not have an active sim and I do not see a way to disable LTE and only have HSPA+.
The battery issue and hacks seems to be an issue I foresee as well but I guess we would just need to be lucky and hope that the hard reset works aka press all buttons at once and pray.

The Base seems to be the most battery efficient from what I've seen with sk8's 2.2 kernel. Check out my posts there. Definitely seeing better battery life with those settings.

+1 for former Atrix
It's great to see that a ton of Atrix users made it to the LGOG. Even better that Noattach made the jump with us!
So, has anybody tried to get the lapdock working with the LGOG yet? I'll be getting an MHL adapter soon, but I only expect video, as the USB speakers in the dock don't seem to have support outside of the Atrix. It would be awesome if there were some way to get the keyboard, trackpad, and USB ports on the dock to talk with the phone. Anybody have any ideas?

omg ASSURION really sucks ass. so I havent heard **** in 2 days. I call, the call tree tells me it would be faster on line, so while i wait i check my claim on line, there is a message there it it might be better to call customer service lol. So I finally get on with a rep and they know nothing about the claim.
