Flyer unavailable at Best Buy (11.22.11)? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

The Best Buy website still shows the Flyer @ $299, but both online and all the stores I checked are out.
Any thoughts/news on whether this is due to strong sales or end-of-life? I enjoy mine so much my mom decided to get one, but now we can't find one.

I realize that ROM development for the view and flyer is different. However, are they both equally rootable? Do they both receive the same regular updates from HTC, including the most recent 2.3.4?
Will they both receive the same HC update in the [indefinite] future?
I'm just wondering if there is a risk to buying the View over the flyer

I just got mine from Techforless. Delivered earlier than expected; it was refurbished, but looks brand new; and works like a charm. Meanwhile, Ijust finished following globatron's awesome guide to installing Honeycomb with no problems at all.
mcoup10off should get you 10% off for another day, i think (found the code online).

No prob rooting and the last update came quicker than the flyer, hc, still waiting.

Two days ago, I checked Best Buy online all every store in my area had them in stock. Yesterday, none did. My guess is that there will be some kind of sale.
Playbooks were recently sold for $200, I bet the same will happen with Flyers.

You are thinking about the HP touchpad. The playbook can be bought right now for $200 out the door.

You are right. $200 is such a good price. And it's better than Kindle Fire.

Right. I own a Playbook too and the Flyer is a much better tablet at the moment but the Playbook has some advantages too and MIGHT get better over time.

Has RIM released the update to allow you to run Android completely on it? That was the reason I didn't get it in the first place (other than it being a crackberry).

There is an open beta that lets you install Android Apps.
There are limitiations. Anything that was developed using the Android SDK won't work. Probably about 50% of Android Apps work. Kindle works. At this point, I would not buy a Playbook thinking that you can run the Android Apps that you want to though. Many won't work.
RIM's appworld is actually starting to fill out with some decent apps. EA games like Madden. Gameloft games.
The Kindle HTML5 Web App also works.

There have been plently of updates but none of them have expanded the feature set much. There is a big update scheduled for February that will bring a lot of new features. If this goes off as planned, the Playbook will be pretty competitive with Android and iOS.
I paid full price and feel screwed but if you can get one for $200, I think its worth the risk. the Playbook OS is really fast and fun to use. Hopefully one day you can do alot with it.

All true! My point is that for $200 it might be worth seeing how it plays out.

I bought a playbook for $199 and I do have to say that the multi-tasking and internet browser is unmatched in regards to other tablets. Part of the reason is that it was designed from the ground up with tablets in mind. Unfortunately, it is missing features such as android apps, email, and a kindle app. I put it back in the box for now and will continue to use my flyer for now. I will play with it again in February to see if the promised update makes this tablet more usable for me (I don't have a BB phone so I can't use the link feature).

So I was looking at this, can you use this via wifi? Is it the same as the Flyer just with larger SD storage? I just notice is says 4g, don't those usually need a data plan of some sort to run? Where as the Flyer has the wifi and the 3g model and the best buy one was just a wifi so it didn't need a service contract. I just don't want to buy this and then have to have a plan for it rather than just wifi.

You dont "need" a data plan you could just run it wifi. The Flyer and View are not exactly the same though. The roms and ruu's are specific, in that regard the flyer gets a bit more love. I also wouldn't be shocked to see the Flyer get the official update to HC before the View does. No carrier testing involved.

Thanks for the info lrs421. So I think I'll pass on that then... I called Best Buy because I ordered one yesterday and it said it was in stock online. then today looked at my order and it said backordered. When I called they said It was BO for up to 30 days but should be no longer than that. Not sure what to do, wait it out and hope i get one, or go to that tech for less and get an "open Item" one.... decisions...

Though it's not the same as an HDMI-out, the Thunderbolt will be able to provide HDMI-out through an adapter.

I'm liking the first three accessories; Accessories Supported: HDMI Adapter, Wireless Charging , Extended Battery (3.7VDC, 2750mAh)
The accessories listed above with a 1 year contract is tipping me over to the TB side. My two concerns for the TB is the battery life and cellular reception. I have only owned 2 HTC phones; one was the Tilt on the AT&T network (the reception was sub-par) and the second is the Droid Eris (it does have good reception with the new radio).
The Devs have made the Eris into a good viable smartphone for the masses but the screen size is still not to my liking. I want and need more screen size and resolution to make it work well for me.
I have been thinking of waiting for the Bionic to come out and look at the comparison reviews before making the decision. With the 4G tiered plans looming over our heads, I don't know if it's a good idea to wait. Lastly, how is the earthquake and tsunami in Japan going to affect the availability of new phones?
Decisions... decisions... Both of my lines are up for renewal.....

It is still the 32gb card. I called verizon today because I am on the fence between this and the merge (assuming it has an LTE radio and how long it will take to come out?) I'm sick of the D2 and I miss HTC phones, so i'm going to be paying the full lick. I wanted to find out about data pricing and she said it would be the same, with no premium. And "unlimited". I'm kind of afraid to wait because of the tiered pricing coming up and I really don't want to lose unlimited data.
oh, and there's this.

I was in your boat with wanting to wait for the LG or Moto device but after hearing from my buddy on the inside, I ordered the thunderbolt so I could jump on unlimited LTE, Verizon will grandfather your unlimited plan and you'll never have to worry about going over and having to pay more, to me, that was worth it alone, I'll wait 20 months to get a new device for unlimited LTE, even if it's not in your area, more then likely, it will be over the next year or so, but from what I've heard from my buddy, unlimited data is going to be ending in the next weeks, not summer time like some of the tech hubs have been saying, I'm using the ext battery and waiting for a case that'll fit, love the device, will root once custom recoveries are available! Good luck with your choice
Oh and Radio is great in this device, personally I think it's stronger then my incredible not by much but usually where I have one bar I have two and so forth plus lte is a dream, no issues with using hotspots for my Xbox to get on some COD, bandwidth report under options in cod shows 10000kbs, better then my ll DSL at only 515 kbs.

There is no HDMI port on the phone, period. There is a new standard interface for USB->HDMI dual port (called HML), but I know the Thunderbolt doesn't have it. I looked at the port with my own eyes.
I think you and that PDF file are referring to the DLNA->HDMI adapter from HTC:
mobileburn.com/news.jsp?Id=10802
It will work good for us folks that don't have DLNA tvs, but don't assume you will be able to do Atrix style webtop, mirror display things. DLNA is for streaming video and music, not re-compressing what is on your Android/Thunderbolt screen and sending it via DLNA. Think about the lag on that and overhead to do it. Lack of HDMI, like the Atrix was one of my biggest hangups with the Thunderbolt. I think it was a huge mistake to think DLNA is the future. Webtop, HDMI, MHL, and/or WHDI are! Booooo HTC. But everything else so far is awesome with the Thunderbolt! So cheers HTC!

I would go play with the SGS2 and the Evo 3D if you can. Both are great phones, so it's going to come down to Sense vs TouchWiz.
Also, HTC's bluetooth stack is BORKED and they still haven't fixed it yet. It won't phonebook sync to older cars with Bluetooth 2.x
For me, that's a deal breaker and I would get the SGS2 instead. But if you have a 2011 car, it probably has Bluetooth 3.x and you should be fine.

I wouldn't only solely due to the speakers on the item. Otherwise, I'd say go for it.
I would only recommend this phone if you want the best phone ever made!
Definitely recommend this beast of a phone! however that price is tooooooo high, wait for it to go down a bit and when it does GO FOR IT!
Absolutely....I would play with both the SGS and the HTC. However, Samsung is terrible with updates. The Epic 4G here in the US on Sprint hasn't even got GB yet. It took forever for them to release Froyo.
On the other hand, HTC has very good track record of updates/support. I didn't get the 3D movie on the SD card that came with the phone in the US and *****ed to sprint and actually got a call from HTC and they took my address, had me on a conference call explaining what I did to determine I didn't have it, etc.
On the update side, I had the OG EVO and it was updated pretty regularly. I'd say probably 5-6 updates in a year, which is pretty damn good if you ask me.
The Evo 3d is awesome but if the SGSII is $120 cheaper, I'd rather get that.
Phones there may be expensive there but at least the actual cell phone service is cheap.
The carriers here in the US love having their way with us customers, no lube either.
Samsungs customer service stinks! I recently came from the Epic, and we had to wait almost 8 months for froyo. Not to mention the code that Samsung used to get it operational was all hacked up. I would go for the HTC. You'll hate yourself for dealing with a Samsung piece of equiptment.

I got rid of my Flyer

I sold it. Why? Because there is no official upgrade or whatsoever since I got it on May, and most of all, the scribe pen is useless and have very little function to it on evernote. I paid freaking $80 for the pen! $80! And all it can do is take down notes! I could have bought any other tablet for that kind of use. But what I really bought it for was for sketching and hoped that it would function with Fresco app... but HTC won't do a damn thing about their $80 pen. So long Flyer!
so, we care because?

If you have any bad feedback about the flyer post it on HTC facebook page o twitter, i love the scribe pen and his integration with evernote but seriously as someone said here "if you are going to buy something, buy it for what it is and not for what it will be".
All you have written in the first post says to me that the flyer wasn't for you (and it is one of the best tablets that i have used) and the fault was your bad choice of shopping a product that will fits yours needs and not the tablet itself.
Amen to 13lizzard. This is all generically a "PC" world because of the "personal" part of computing. For me, the Flyer is the best set of price, feature, size, and quality out there, and obviously it is not for SC23 - great, I get it - but above all, BUY YOUR TOYS FOR WHAT THEY CAN DO, NOT WHAT THEY MIGHT BECOME. That's kind of like marrying a gal not for who she is but how you think you are going to change her...
I don't know how you couldn't make use of pen, but I now use Flyer instead of carrying a lot of notebooks with me while working with customers at field. You can make a full report with photo, notes, and even sound record. Even with HC update, pen is much more useful. Maybe you should go for iPad2

I can't decide whether you are being sarcastic or honest.
I switched to pencil and paper for a bit. The UI is bare, but its as natural of an interface as you can get. An added bonus is the low cost of hardware upgrades.
i have even found the customer support rubbish for when pencil hardware failed multi times and needed to be rebooted with sharpener. i think it has boot looped and now run out of battery
Meh. The reason I won't touch any android manufacturer other then HTC is:
1) HTC Sense
2) Build Quality
I have always known that HTC uses inferior CPU/GPU; However, the build quality + software MORE then makes up for it.
I work for HTC and have been using the Flyer with Honeycomb test ROMs for a couple months. I absolutely love it. Flyer + Honeycomb is brilliant.
Flyer fans, keep the faith! You will be rewarded soon.

HTC Flyer Wifi P512 US No Longer Available (For Real This Time/BestBuy)

I know we've had a few threads speculating about this only to have them come back in stock and go again quickly. Now however it looks like BestBuy has pulled them from their website. Looks like this great little tab is now officially no longer available in US wifi version. Didn't think it was really happening when all signs pointed to this last week.
Below is an image of what used to be the Flyer page on Bestbuy.com
So it is. Happy I read the tea leaves and got mine while it was available.

It's a shame because it was a great tablet. I'm going to run outside and pour out a little liquor for it.
Oh no! Are they going to pull it from shelves? Or is this just online?
I was seriously about to get one just the other day, but I decided to wait until next week. Should I be worried?
First Best Buy baits-and-switches with the Transformer being $300 (which is illegal, I'm sure), then this
It would be more specific to people if the thread title was changed to no longer available in the 'US at Bestbuy' as the world IS a darn site bigger...
Plus, the official US version is the View.
Still plenty left for the rest of us.
The Flyer has been a good tablet however I am really looking forward to the HTC Quattro and Samsung's new offering coming up.

Well as I have said before the supply is not infinite and they sure as hell are not going to start up the production line again. So its only a matter of time.
It was still in the BBM in my mall today. I can't see why they'd take it out of stores so close to the holidays...

As soon as this was posted, prices on Ebay and amazon used skyrocketed. Prices of the scribe also went up.
XDA forum posts determine the fate of world markets.

Lol. Bestbuy was the official US source for the P512 wifi only model. The point isn't really Bestbuy per se, it's about this model now more than likely being discontinued.

Yep, here in the US, Best Buy (a large electronics store chain) had an exclusive deal with HTC to sell the P512 (that many of us refer to as the Best Buy wifi only model). If Best Buy is out of that particular model, then that model has completed its run.
I'm sure that there are still plenty of other ways to get the other View / Flyer models around the world. I'm just glad that I got in on the deal on the P512 before they sold out. This is a great tablet, and I plan to use it for as long as I can.
And, I can understand that some might see this thread as being US-centric since it is only about the US Best Buy tablet, but the OP never said anything about the Flyer / View being done world-wide. Us USA folks just won't be able to walk into our neighborhood Best Buy and purchase this particular model.

Actually the View 4g is Sprint specific. The Best Buy WiFi only Flyer (P512) is not the same, and was released before the view. Before you try to correct an OP, you should know what you're talking about.
My tab's Flyer than yours! Unless this is posted in a Flyer thread, then it's just as Flyer...

This is true but in fact it is the only US specific model of the "Flyer" series.
The other CDMA (market specific) model is the ExpressKT or Korean Flyer.

And before making an arrogant statement like that you should check *YOUR* "facts" particularly when the two others who mentioned this meant it as a little bit of light-hearted ribbing. The P512 is the WIFI only model. It is neither BestBuy nor US specific. It is a global model. The only difference between the "US BestBuy" model and the rest of the world is that it has a Brightstar CID and other markets have a different CID and for a long time we had no RUU for it.
Didn't know the overseas wifi version was also the P512. Let's not make it a huge issue. I'll update the title.

Irs421, I had no issue with what you posted whatsoever and had no issue with the title at all even if it was slightly inaccurate, the truth is that the US was the one big market for that model. It was the language of the previously quoted response that annoyed me, nothing else.

Thanks for clarifying that globatron. I didn't realize that, since it was promoted here as being a BestBuy exclusive.

View no longer available on sprint website

Has anyone else noticed this? I wonder why. Does anyone know?
Was told today at a Sprint corp store that it was end of life next week.
I read on Google that it was eol at the end of January. Makes me curious about something. See I was really close to buying the evo view instead, but the day I was going to buy it, the price went up $50 so if got the flyer instead. The flyer is getting an ics update, but is the evo? Other than having a cdma radio and a different paint job how much different is it actually over the flyer?

Do you know if they are under $249 at the stores? I just got mine last week, so if it is I am within my 2 weeks. I should be eligible for a price match.

I haven't read anywhere that either was getting ICS. Where did you read that at?
I Googled "htc flyer ics update " and found an announcement from htc with a list of devices slated for the update and the flyer was listed, and I'm hearing possibly before second quarter

I was told by the Sprint rep they would not be lowering the price. He said they usually just pull the stock from stores to be sent back to the manufacturer. I am guessing they have already started doing this and this is why the View has been so inexpensive and available on ebay and other outlets.
The Flyer/View was just such a missed opportunity for HTC. They are really stand out android tablets. Nice build quality, very responsive and fast with a single core, easy to carry due to 7" display, great stylus integration. If only they priced it correctly from the get go. As it stands they are probably the best 2 android tablets that no one knew existed

Here is HTC's official page where they list the ICS update available phones.
Unless I overlooked it, Flyer/View is not there.

Well I did a search again and it is slated for ics.... In India :-( well that sucks. I may actually have to look to downgrading to gb now to get my games to work, either that or hope CM9 comes eventually

Guess I'd better buy accessories for mine while I still can. Can onyone confirm that the charger for the Evo View is compatible with the HTC Flyer? I assume it is, but just want to be sure. I'll probably buy a car charger and a back-up mains charger if so.

The Evo View and Flyer are exactly same with the exception of the Wimax radio in the View. Accessories for one will fit the other.

If you go to a Sprint store and buy 2 accessories they give you 20% off. Which makes the store price of $50 for the scribe the same as sprint online price of $40. I have actually been wanting a Jawbone Jambox so I got that and an extra scribe.

I'd be all over that if they carried the OEM chargers, but the last Sprint store I went to did not. I'll try later today at a store that's close to where I work.
Some stores will match the on line price if you ask. I want a scribe, but they are kinda over priced IMO.

FYI, the EVO View is available for $275 (link below), they are brand new and no Sprint contract to worry about. I called a local Sprint contract store last week and they said the View was available for $249 with a 2 year contract. I wasn't interested in a contract commitment. I am not planning to use the Sprint service so the Flyer would have been fine for me but I just couldn't warm up to the white/silver color combo and the View has 32GB of built-in memory and the black color suits me perfect. Got my View yesterday, updated to HC and really enjoying it. I also ordered the scribe from Sprint's website at the sale price.
