Universal AndRoot for S2? (Rooting Apk?) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey!
I searched as much as I could, but to my best effort under this bad connection I'm using right now (I'm in the Tahrir Protests in Egypt right now!), I couldn't find anything.
When I used my Milestone, there was an app called Universal AndRoot. It was an apk file that you installed normally, then you could just gain and lose temporary root by clicking it on and off. Is there such a thing for the S2?
We're here in the protest and I am trying to create a wifi tether for the people here, can't risk rooting the phone right now and bricking it.
Thanks!

Hey it turns out I already have tether! But the question remains Thanks for the help.

I don't know of a way that easy.. but the windows program 'super one click rooting can do it.. assuming you have comparable drivers in your computer, and it can actually read the phone (installing samsung kids will allow a PC go recognize the phone). another option is flashing a kernel or custom rom that is prerooted.. (can be done right from the phone, but can he a. huge pain).. that's all I can think of ATM.. goodluck with whatever you're protesting for.

[Q] Help is such a nasty term, but some assistance is required

Hello devs/deviants/xda members.
I hate for this to be my first post, but avast.
The other night (in a drunken stupor that i... regrettably...dont remember) i managed to brick (probably) my Vibrant.
From going through my history i figured out that i successfully rooted my phone and loaded Macnut R14 ROM. However, it then appears that i loaded the Axure CE rom (for Captivate i think).
It is now stuck in a loop. The Att load screen appears, followed by a Galaxy S, Gt-i900 screen. My phone then says in a creepy Radiohead voice: "restore operation"
I cannot access recovery (through adb or 3-button recovery) and i have been unable to get into download mode.
My finace has forbidden me to buy the replacement phone ($288 dollars if Tmo finds anything wrong with it), so i turn to you, masters of all thing dev, for help.
I expect a certain bit of jabbing and or anger from those more established members. If it makes my case any better, i have been trolling XDA for quite a while and y'all helped me root my G1 (which i love ;-) )
Any help would be great.
Final question--is it true you can't brick a Vibrant? Just looking for some more info.
Thanks in advance,
~ J017373
Thanks guys, found a YouTube video to show me how to get into download. THERE IS HOPE YET!
okay, so i have it it Download mode. (Huge shout out to TheVoiceofAndroid), but i cant get Odin to read the phone. Is it possible that i need to download the Captivate drivers?
Was your phone recognized in odin before this mishap? Just make sure you have the proper drivers installed. If you do indeed need the drivers, just search the forums.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
i didnt flash with odin. Pretty sure i used adm. ****ing drunk self.
Downloading samsung drivers now. Do u know, does it cover all their Galaxy S Phones.
Search the development forums for the link to the drivers. Then just download the drivers for your respective OS.
After you have the proper drivers, just re-open odin and it should recognize your device. You should have a COM##.

Best thing you can do is just go to the vibrant bible or click on the stickies tab. Your drivers are there along with odin and odin tutorials. I wanged my phone once or twice and xda hasn't failed me yet.

ok com recognoized. The only problem im having is if i want to goto eugenes 2.2, do i have to goto stock first?
dear LORD ITS FIXED. THANK YOU XDA!
Haha, awesome post.
Remember how you just fixed your phone... if you continue to tweak it, it will more than likely happen again ;-)
Good to have you back.

[Q] stock build for telus fascinate 3g+ (sgh-t959d)

hi there, i've searched and searched and cannot for the life of me find any stock roms or anything for the telus fascinate it probably doesn't help that I don't know what the build number is... I flashed a verizon vibrant rom quite a while ago and don't remember my methods of doing so, I've read that it's going to be a huge PITA to get it back to stock, especially because I can't seem to get it into ^&%^*% recovery mode or even get it to connect to my pc.. so any help in that regard will also be MUCH appreciated
THANK YOU in advance.. I hope!
Alright so i managed to find an all in one zip file in a tutorial post obvs i didn't look hard enough lol!
So that just leaves me with the more important predicament. I can't get my phone into recovery mode to flash with odin and my pc won't connect to the pc at all.. I read somewhere that my phone is soft-bricked???? Because of using a vibrant Rom? Any input is greatly appreciated once again
P.s can a mod change the title? Or can i? Because its slightly irrelevant to the post now

Can you link the All in One ODIN you are talking about?
I sure can here it is

coincidentally this is also the exact procedure i followed when I rooted and flashed.
so a little more information for you.
sorry about the reply taking forever i couldn't find the post on my phone and haven't had much time to sit on the computer

Says your phone model is GT i9000 so you probably flashed a gti9000 rom (Bell Vibrant / international Galaxy S).
Anyway... you need to be in "download mode" to flash via odin. I think you meant phone to pc, but were you able to connect your phone to the pc before? Do you have the correct drivers installed?
You know you're in soft-bricked if when you turn on the phone, you get a picture of a phone to pc with a ! in between. This can be fixed by a USB jig, or for some, just doing the download mode button combination while your battery is out and your usb is plugged into the computer.
What rom did you install exactly?
Yes i realise that i suppose that's what i meant but odin doesn't pick up my phone and my pc won't either. I used to be able to connect yes but now it won't I have the drivers downloaded i havent had the chance to try a different cord but this is the same cord i used to flash, so im pretty sure that's not the problem.
I guess its not soft bricked then i haven't seen anything like what you have described,
The Rom im using is called EXTRAordinary Rom or something like that ill try and find a link for you

If you have gotten your phone into download mode and your pc isn't recognizing it, you should; 1 - try a different pc, 2 - try a different cable or 3 - try both. Are you still able to get it into download mode?
Ughh I've tried every computer in my house, 3 laptops and one desktop...
My personal laptop is the only one it worked on previously, it now doesn't work, and I only have the original cable i did the flashing with originally, but i'll yoink a cable from work tomorrow do test that out, although I am seriously doubting it would work... my widgets have recently stopped working as well, they say "problem loading widget" I'm pretty scared by this point and feel as though my phone is sloooowly hardening into a useless brick. i'll update tomorrow, when I get a new cable.
um also, I've posted this question in a different thread but have yet to be answered, why can't I find the telus usb drivers anywhere? they don't have it on samsung's website,,, i haven't installed any drivers since the original flashing and have no clue as to where to find them... as far as I could remember it was ridiculously easy to find them last time....
Thanks in advance,
Antoine

[Q] Windows 7 will not pick up SGSII in USB Debugging Mode (Will not root as well)

I just bought my new Galaxy SII for a penny. Great deal, and spectacular phone. Happens to be my first android phone as well (been waiting for one for years). The only problem i am having is when I put the phone in USB debugging the computer won't pick it up in explorer. If I enable USB mode I can copy files, but I cannot root (Trying the Xperia X10 Easy Rooting Toolkit, spits out crap about "cannot find the path specified", no matter what I do). Kies also seems to not work with the phone... I have tried both my Self Built Windows 7 HP 64 Bit Desktop and Windows 7 HP 32 Bit netbook and both have the same problem. Windows Devices and Printers reads the device but says that the driver has not been installed, when in fact it has...
Any and all help to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Haha thanks, got it working. Rooted and everything, sorta excited-kid in a candy store .
OK. So if you couldn't tell, I'm a complete newb with android, wanted it for forever, but circumstances didn't allow me to until now, and now I feel a little over my head. Sooo:
1.) Could you (or someone) maybe post links to some threads or sites that would be good to ease me into the world of android?
2.) With my Samsung Galaxy SII, if I am installing ROM's and taking them off, and installing new ones, what are the chances of bricking my device?
3.) Since I rooted it, I went over to CyanogenMod and downloaded the ZIP to the latest stable ROM. I then dropped it into my SD card, and went into a app I downloaded called ROM Manager. When I went to install from SD card, and it rebooted, it gave me an error and popped back out, seemed like I did it wrong. So how do I install ROM's (CM7 in particular).
4.) How would I go about removing that ROM after its been installed and im tired of it ?
I hate feeling like a newb, and would be very thankful for any help people would be willing to give to get me started!
Ok, two more questions .
1.) Is there a good app to backup my current apps before doing a wipe(I have a ton of them...)?
2.) I read that ROM's cannot include google apps, so how would I get them on? Would I download the APK and then sideload them?
Thanks again!
The ROMs that I downloaded were all in ZIP folders and I couldn't figure out what I should link to odin as ZIP folders aren't compatable to flash . And then my phone wont reboot into recovery or download mode (can't remember which one I need to be in for Odin). I tried with debugging on and off and it just boots right back into android. This is very frustrating, as I know I must be doing something wrong...
Thanks for all your help

Wow you need to slow before you do something stupid. Take the time to read and just as important, if not more important, take the time to search the internet for your questions.
Learning what steps needed to do something to your phone is not the goal. Learning what you are doing and why, should be the goal, and learning how to do each step is a sidepoint that you learn as a by-product.
Most important thing to learn why and how to check for is to make sure what you're flashing does not contain bootloaders. If you mess with bootloaders and the smallest thing goes wrong, you end up owning an extremely expensive paper weight, i.e. a brick.
In general flashing what the majority flash here on xda is safe. But that's not a guarantee as any garbage can be uploaded. So read the entire thread. Some are long. If you can't be bothered to read the longer ones, at the minimum use the search tool to look for particular words to your question. Search before you post. It will be evident by what you ask that you've spent the time researching, and will attract a higher level of help.
I'm not trying to be mean or come down on you. You're already starting to do what's right by asking when you're not sure.
A NOTE TO YOU AND EVERY NOOB ON XDA:
One of the biggest reasons people's questions receive no response for a day or more, is because their question could be easily solved by using the search tool in xda or one google search.
In the wise words of tom cruise, "Help me, help you. Help me, help you!"
And yeah, he can fly.

Yea. I goofed and I flashed an international ROM onto it. I was able to find a unrooted stack tar to flash. I plan to do a lot of reading before I do this again . If anyone has any ideas on where to start that would be great.
And no problem, I understand as I am a heavy user of tomshardware forums. It frustrates me when people ask for advice a two second search would pull up.
Again thanks everyone! XDA is awesome!

[Q] Need help to root my phone

Hi,
I am trying to root my phone and have not had any success. I am on a Mac, but I set up a Windows 7 virtual machine and I am following the instructions on the article "How to Root Samsung Galaxy Note and Install CWM Recovery"
Whenever I run the runme.bat file and hit any key, it does something and then closes out so I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I made sure that the USB Debugging option is on, and I read somewhere that I need to set it to Charge Only mode but I am not sure how to do that. Does anyone know how to fix this?

There is no RunMe.bat (that I know of) for any rooting method of the AT&T Galaxy Note, so it sounds like you following directions for the International Note. Good thing it didn't do anything, or it likely would have bricked your phone.
I would suggest you research and read a bit more so you are more comfortable with the process. This video is a very good step-by-step video:

I believe this was made by a fellow XDA user, so find them and thank them if it helps!
Check out this link... i just rooted my at & t galaxy note.. step by step instructions for pc. should work in your virtual machine... its always 100 times easier to root your phone on a pc. try to get your hands on one to do it!

Hope this helps..worked for me
Thank you very much.
I follow those steps, boot the phone into downloading mode, and then connect it to my computer. When I do this, on my virtual machine running Windows 7 this is what it says in the device manager:
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
Is there a fix to this or should I just use a friends PC?
Did you download the drivers from Samsung and install them in Win7?
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-I717RWAATT
Not sure if that's the issue or not - but it's worth asking.
That was the problem, thank you. I should have just downloaded that zip file in the one post...
thanks for all your help. following the forum post I was able to get the Note rooted!
Cool.I too use a Mac but I have windows installed with boot camp.
Now that you rooted, try installing saurom ROM.I did and my note runs much better and you have some nice customizing options.

good deal. i wouldnt recommend messing with a rom or kernel if youre happy with the root. you could trap youself in bootloop and the phone wont turn on unless you flash everything back to stock... it gets a little difficult if youre new to it... good luck with your note!

Easy one click root/unroot

Im running stock Gingerbread, never been rooted.
What I am looking for is a simple one click method to root the phone for a few minutes so I can make a few tweaks and then unroot it.
Yes, Im aware that I can use the Odin method to root without tripping the flash counter, make my tweaks, and then use another Odin package to unroot it, however, there are a few problems with this, in order to keep this brief, I dont want to go into all the details but suffice it to say, I dont want root constantly enabled, I just want to enable it briefly and I dont want to install CWM so I can reset the flash counter and then (if its even possible) have to re-install the 3e recovery menu EVERY time I need root for something briefly.
Im looking for something along the lines of Super One Click (shortfuse.org) or UnlockRoot (www.unlockroot.com) where I can hit root, the phone reboots, I do what I need to do, hit unroot and the phone reboots unrooted. Both of these tools, needless to say, do NOT work (even tho they are listed as supported devices). Remember also, this is the ATT Note SGH-I717 so when looking thru the device lists supported by other software, make sure to look for the right Note .
i don't think those methods exist like they did with say the Samsung infuse. I used the Odin way, just as easy as super one click...but you mentioned you didn't want to use it so I'm not sure what you can do. Why not just stay rooted? And there is a flash counter reset just so you know

Im well aware of how easy the pre-rooted kernel is to flash via Odin, its the unrooting process that is a pain.
I dont want to stay rooted and I dont want to use Odin, the process of reverting back to unrooted is too much of a pain in the ass.
My guess is that there is no easy one click process or it would have been posted already.
Its a shame, one of the huge benefits with Android was how easy it was to gain root to tweak OS level things and then revert back to an unrooted state.
I used SuperOneClick without any issues whatsoever? What, is it not supposed to work or something?

Erm, ok, Id love to know how you did...
First, what phone do you have (carrier). I am using the ATT Note.
If we are on the same page there, what settings do I need to enable on the phone and/or SuperOneClick?
On my phone, I enabled USB Debugging, in SuperOneClick, I left everything default, I click the Root button and on step 7 a bunch of gobbly gook appears (there is no log created so I cant just copy and paste some of the text) and it just stops. I left it sitting for a few minutes and nothing happened to either the phone or SuperOneClick.

I have two Notes. The N7000 I rooted using SoC on GB, doing exactly what you've done. The i717 was exactly the same. USB debugging enabled, plugged in and USB not mounted. MY computer is picky about USB ports so I use the same port and cable for every phone.
Grab the latest SoC (my sig has a link) and extract. Install Kies to get the USB drivers, then uninstall Kies and leave the drivers installed. Plug in the phone and let it install. Once it's done, run SoC (not as an administrator), select 'auto' for the exploit and click 'root'.
You'll get the usual 'found a gingerbread', 'sending 149 zerglings' etc. Then it tells you the 'overseer found a path' and after a few more steps reboots with root. Took me all of about 40 seconds.
I use AT&T phones unlocked in Australia, so we are using the same handset. This method doesn't work for ICS, you'll need to flash SU with CWM for that.
Let me know if I can help any more
Yea, unfortunately, it doesnt work for me.
I have the Samsung drivers installed (I know because when I plug in my phone under device manager, it shows my phone as correctly installed and I get a pop up from windows asking me whether I want to open a folder to browse the phones' contents - and Kies sees the phone).
I even tried uninstalling Kies but keeping the driver installed (Windows still asks me whether I want to browse the phone contents).
I also tried removing the sd card, altho this should not affect the process.
When I run SOC, I maximize the window so I can read the text and basically, when it gets to step 7, it sends 149 zerglings, then it waits 40 seconds, then it sends 189 zerglings, waits 40 seconds, then it says that it doesnt have write permissions and asks me whether I have root or not (not in a dialog box but in the text on the right hand side of the screen - I can only assume that it is initially trying to get a shell/temporary root so that it can do what it needs to for a permanent root), then it tries to push some files to the phone and then just completely stops. I let it sit for Id say 10 minutes with no progress.
The only thing that maybe is creating a problem is that the phone seems to be automounting, when I plug in the storage, it doesnt ask me what I want to do, it just mounts the device. I poked around in the settings and couldnt find any setting to disable this but Im not 100% sure this is a problem as the Captivate did the same, when you enabled USB debugging, it would automount the device.
Oh, and when I plug in the USB cable, the notifications bar shows 'MTP Initializing' and a few seconds later, 'MTP Mode'.
And Im using Super One Click version 2.3.3

Did you ever get a working solution to your question? I am in the same position: wanting to temporarily root my phone, do my tweaks and then re-root it so that I can run the POS enterprise mail application that has a policy to check for "root".
I would think that this should be much easier than it seems, but perhaps not
Thanks,

I havent found any solutions yet...
SuperOneClick did not work for me either. I have used it on 3 other phones with no issue so I dunno.
