I managed to enter the download mode using a usb jig. But Odin would not detect the phone at all, PC recognize the phone as "unknown device".
I tried all the drivers, different ports, different pc... no go. Phone stuck at download mode.
I don't have a system right now, can't boot into any OS (formatted system to get out of MIUI using CWM previously). So is it possible to have a "corrupted" download mode? The screen says download, but internally something else is happening?
Unknown device means bad drivers.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
Yeah it's bad drivers. You can try these here... http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x64.shtml
It isn't an issue with your phone as I've been able to use Odin to get out of countless bricks.
Sent from my SGH-T959 (Samsung Vibrant)
did you try uninstall and reinstalling ODIN. Sometimes ODIN is retarded like that. However, it does sound like you are having a bad drivers issue.....like the guys above me stated.
I tried the softpedia driver v1.345...
I tried the newest July 2011 1.4.2.2 driver
Nothing works
Is there a repair center that accept samsung vibrant in Canada?
tried odin 1.3, 1.7, 1.85, none works
maybe the internal ram or rom is broken?
Try this.
1. Disconnect phone from computer. (No need to turn it off, just unplug it.)
2. Install these drivers: http://www.mediafire.com/?1c3ca4117bm43n6
3. Connect phone.
4. Should recognize it now.

Tried heimdall as well, can't recognize the phone... no vendor id or product id
Going to try a few repair shops tomorrow
Tried Odin on the same computer with same driver that worked before... but now it doesn't ... so it must be the phone
When power on the phone, it would stuck at he vibrant logo. Can't get into recovery. Only way to get it to somewhere is using a usb jig to get it to download mode. After that, nothing works so far. Sometimes the computer freezes when plug in with download mode.
same problem, phone wont recognize device, tried just about every driver, was coming off miui, pc sometimes freezes then usb device malfunction bubble message, phones running but went from 85% battery to 27 in a coupla hours of setting. If i download a 2.2 rom through rom manager, and flash manually, will it brick? cant reflash clockworkmod for vibrant, rom manager doesnt offer it, only vibrant mtd.

I was running MIUI LE 5
Its driver/ phone recognition, the answer is on an xda thread somewhere, i was on miui nb, samsung drivers dont work anymore, ive heard nexus one drivers might do it ill post if it works.
Correct
If you are on Miui or CM7 the Samsung drivers are useless. You need to install the Nexus Google drivers.
Download the android sdk kit (Google it). Thru the kit install the drivers. Once installed plug in phone and thru the windows device manager change the drivers to the Google Nexus ones (somewhere in program files android sdk).

Found it:
Q: Where can I get the Nexus S drivers?
A: Download and install the Android SDK HERE then download "Google USB Driver package, revision X"
Once downloaded, right click on "Computer", "Manage", "Device Manager", "Nexus S", "Update Driver Software", and point it to wherever you isntalled the SDK

That could be. Try leaving the phone on the charger for a while then try using the JIG again. It should start going into download mode again.

If i leave it on the charger, it automatically goes to the vibrant logo screen.
And after a while, the cpu would be hot, but not the battery...
Oh i just had that problem yesterday. Get the Nexus S drivers. For some reason whenever coming off MIUI you need the Nexus drivers on ur pc, NOT THE VIBRANT ONES.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19AEbiWYULE
There^ thats the video tutorial i used and it worked for me. Good luck.
Btw, have you tried getting into download mode my removing you battery, plugging the usb into your PC and the phone. Press both volume buttons while it is plugged into PC and then place battery all while holding the volume buttons. It should go into download mode.

The vibrant was running CM7 for a few hours until I noticed that it wouldn't charge via USB. It wouldn't charge from the wall outlet nor when plugged into a computer (the computer did recognize that it existed but didn't have the drivers for it).
I tried to recover it but then the process failed and it was stuck in boot menu. The vibrant only loads to the first splash screen. I can put it into download mode however ODIN doesn't recognize it. Nothing shows up. I've installed the Samsung Vibrant drivers and I've tried Kies Mini however Windows 7 32bit won't recognize the device. How can I install the stock ROM if Odin doesn't recognize it?
if u can get into dl mode but cant get pc to recognize ur phone use aio toolbox or get a usb jig that may help!!
or since your on CM7 ..try the Nexus S drivers and see if it recognizes it.
Could it be that maybe USB Debugging is turned off? At this point there is no way I can boot up to turn it on.
All of the drivers I install end up not being installed correctly, I get errors.

CyanogenMod 7 for Vibrant Q&A
Just press Ctr+F and search ''Nexus S'' and you will find the instructions on how to get them.
I'm having some difficulty. I don't have a phone under my device drivers. All that's showing up is PCI Simple Communications Controller. I click on update driver and direct it to the SDK. Nothing happens.
Edit:
Downloaded the Intel ME: Management Engine Interface driver for the PCI problem. It seems to be fixed. Now my phone is showing up as unknown device. Working on it some more.

there many way to unbrick your phone
here what i found
Try this, it is slightly different from what the guy earlier said..
1.) Take off your back cover, remove your sim & mirco sd card.
2.) Remove your battery.
Make sure you have Odin OPEN with admin privileges!
Make sure you have the USB plugged into your PC but NOT your phone!
3.) Hold the volume buttons.
4.) Put the battery in.
5.) Put the USB in.
Continue holding the volume keys & you should pop into DOWNLOAD mode within a few seconds
or
1. remove battery, sim and sd
2. Open Odin
3. Connect usb to phone
4. Hold down both volume keys and power
5. but battery back in
6. once the screen blinks, let go of the power button
7. keep holding both volume keys until the downloading screen starts
8. Flash back to stock. I always go back to stock after something like this just to make sure that nothing got corrupted. Also check the re-partition option.

Another suggestion is to try the Jig
And if that is not working then your only option is Jtag
go to www.mobiletechvideos.com and he sells professional JIGs for $8 and he can also fix complete bricks for $40. I ordered my JIG yesterday but I'm expecting that I will have to have him do the Jtag on it because my phone just DIED badly yesterday. Nothing has worked. We'll see what happens.

The Jig is to get it into Download mode. As you had stated earlier you can do this without issue.
I am guessing you are just missing the "Nexus S" drivers on your machine. I had to install them before it would recognize my phone when I first went to ICS.
You should find a link for the "Nexus S" drivers in the Development section. ICS does not want the Galaxy S drivers.

Hi,
did you try installing google's SDK? try installing Java SDK x64 http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
then install http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
when installing Android SDK in the "extra" section check the usb drivers.
after it downloads you can try changing the drivers in the device manager of windows and use the drivers found here.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver
well thats what i did after odin didnt recognize my phone. but my phone wasnt bricked. hope it helps.
thank you for triying help to me!!!!!! I also installed ANDROID SDK bu noyhing help me to fix that problem and PC stil recognized my phone as an {unknown device} ((((((((
Edit: nvm i see that you can access download mode.
It is definitely a driver issue, try a different usb port or even a different computer.
thank's but i've already tried that in 4 different PCs but nothing helped me there are shown only unknown device

Try a new USB cable.
I can tell you from experience that I thought I was completely bricked...I went out and bought a brand new phone! BUT, when I got home from the store, I kept trying, and I finally got everything working.
I know it's been said, but really make sure you have the correct drivers on your computer! That's the thing that saved me. I didn't have them at first, and I finally found them...do you have a friend whose computer you can try?
I had the same issue with my phone a while back.. I called Samsung, told them it just stopped working, and somehow i managed to still be under warranty. I sent it to them, and they say they replaced some parts or something, and sent it back working like new.
However, i would suggest trying the JIG. Ive heard it works, just forces your phone into download mode, and ODIN at that point should recognize it. GL
(Might want to try cleaning your computer, the registry files, and rebooting. Cant tell you how often thats helped solve issues for me.)
Thanks all for help but my phone didnt fixedhttp://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
How I fix those bricks....
1. Download AI0 Vibrant Tool Box here...
http://www.google.dm/url?sa=t&rct=j...uJ2iBA&usg=AFQjCNHHTDPoSZz-8jqhAHy7S2lsO5Vq4g
2. Run the toolbox.exe file.
3. From menu do "Install Drivers" just to be sure & follow screen directions.
3. Remove the phone battery.
4. From AI0 Menu select "Flash to Stock"
5. From Menu select Reboot into download & Start ODIN
6. Connect your USB cable to phone.
7. Hold down both UP/Down Volume buttoms AND Power button.
8. While doing that Install your battery.
9. See if Odin will recognize the phone by highlighting the ID:COM to yellow.
10. If so then load the PIT & PDA files & flash back to stock Eclair 2.1
Thank you,but AIO Vibrant Toolbox 2.5 doesnt help me to fix my vibrant, there are still uknown device((((((((((((
hello people.
i was trying to flash the kernel from ics 4.0.4 . first i connected it to the computer to flash it from odin. the green thing that was supposed to show up in odin didnt show up. me being dumb, i clicked start on odin for the heck of it. on odin it said fail. on my player there was this weird symbol.
i tried taking out the bettery and then i waited a few seconds. then i turned it on and the same symbol was there. i also tried going into download mode but when i tried it just showed the weird symbol and then turned black and again and again. i also tried going in to recovery which also did the same kind of thing. (bootlooping) . so has anyone experienced this before.
device info:
samsung galaxy player 4.0 (usa version)
terrasilent kernel
rooted
running icyfusion.
any help would be apperciated!

He said that it's the same as download mode. For your information this mode is a forced download mode which means that you need to flash something to get over it. In this case a new kernel.

Try these:
1. Be sure to have anything Kies related not running [as a process] in the background (Task Manager alt+ctrl+delete on your computer)
2. Restart your computer and try the same usb port again (Kies process closed again).
3. Try a different USB port.
4. Try a different usb cord (I have over 4 in my home due to phones).
5. Try a different computer (I have two in my home).
Flash your kernal again as this is usually the case the phone dash exclamation sign icon comes up, odin of course.

I don't have any USB device connected other than the mouse on PC. i have even tried on my laptop with no mouse.
I have downloaded pit file and uvjfd.tar two times from the forums.
I have tried flashing multiple times from both my PC & laptop using Odin 3.0 v1.0, v1.85, v3.07(latest), EZOdin v1.70 and installed Samsung USB drivers multiple times, even downloaded latest driver version from official Samsung Vibrant page.
I have tried flashing from all possible USB ports on my PC & laptop wherever the phone was being recognized. But now with the latest official Samsung Vibrant drivers, my phone is not being detected by any USB port on my PC.
But whenever I have flashed, Odin is stuck at Cache or Modem or recently(with latest samsung drivers), DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET !!
I have even tried flashing through Heimdall 1.3.1 but the zadig.exe shows the device only as 'Gadget Serial' no matter how many times I try, and installs the driver with device as Gadget Serial under libusb in Device Manager and I also tried by updating driver as Samsung Composite USB as mentioned in readme. Either Way Heimdall frontend will not flash and says "Failed to detect compatible download-mode device".
Edit: I tried with another USB cable, of LG GS500v, and Oh Lord Jesus, Odin flashed past it. Great, time to buy a new Samsung USB cable, now!

Hi!
Whomever can help me, please help me. Right now, I am on stock Froyo 2.2 after the factory reset so this is how I got it but it is rooted only. I am trying to overwrite CWM because I cannot get into its recovery no matter how many times I flash it. Odin just will not recognize my phone when I am in download mode. When my phone is on, it will allow the mass storage and that works but when in download mode, my PC says unrecognized devide. I have a feeling that is the problem and I have updated the drivers several times, especially from Samsung but to no avail. Does someone have a solution to this problem? I want to go to Avatar ROM with my phone which is Jelly Bean and have seen its possible but I feel CWM is holding me back.

Can you explain the steps your taking when you try to get into odin
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda app-developers app
The steps I take is put the phone into download mode by pulling the battery and then holding both the volume up and down then reinsert the battery. It shows the download screen. I then start odin and I have tried version 1.7 and the latest version of 3.0.7. Then I plug my phone into the USB port and windows pops up saying unrecognized device. I have reinstalled drivers several times. Now to describe my desktop is that it is a pentium III 550 Mhz...and old computer and running Windows XP Professional. I am able to do the mass storage when the phone is on normally so it recognizes it that way though. I have tried different USB ports on it as well so just unsure. I have rooted the phone and have superuser app access. ROM manager was supposed to have flashed the recovery mode but it never goes into the CWR mode either and its version is 2.5.1.2 which I have seen work on these phones in videos on YouTube so guess I am trying a different route so I can play with the mods to find a ROM I like. I was going to try the Avatar ROM for the vibrant but just cannot seem to get to the point where I can get the ROM flashed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Keep the battery in and lull up Odin. Cut off the phone and hold both volumes while inserting USB hopefully the computer will then recognize it

I found the link:

on the Repository thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1875966
And since only thing remaining in your case is USB cable, I would say try with a different micro USB cable, even a different vendor's will do, as it did the trick for me( see the edit in OP)
I will try that. Thank you! I need to get a car charger anyway so I can get a usb adapter for the car and a usb cable and try it that way.

For now, you can try any micro usb cable that fits, they all have same specifications.
Okay. Thanks!

Stuck on cache
I'm also stuck on cache & I have tried more than one USB cable. Is there something else that I might be doing wrong? I'm completely uninclined technologically. The fact that I got my phone into download mode after 'bricking' is a feat in itself. Now what do I do when I'm stuck??

Great that you could get it to the download mode.
Follow these steps:
1. Make sure that you have the correct drivers installed for your Operating System. Preferably, download the latest drivers. You can verify when your device is recognized when connected in download mode.
2. Make sure you follow this thread for Odin flashing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
3. If unable to flash using ODIN successfully, try with different USB ports, on same computer or a different one, say, a laptop.
4. If still unable to do so, try with different USB cables (any micro-usb should do).
In this way, you should by trying multiple alternatives at each step you should be able to eliminate the options and figure out what is really creating the problem in your flashing. Trust me my friend, this has not go anything to do with technology. just follow the steps, try alternatives and you would resolve this. Do post back on thread, if you have any queries.
My computer won't recognize my gs4. I have the latest drivers installed and have re-installed many times. The only thing it does when I plug it in is charge. It sometimes says windows is searching for the latest driver when I plug it in, but it then it then says it was unplugged. ODIN did manage recognize it once and that was enough for me too root it and then flash the stock kernel back on. My phone then soft-bricked at the padlock after some rom flashing and I had to go to my friends house to flash it back to stock. Is there anything else I can do?
Am I the only one with this problem?
Does it give you the error "USB device not recognized"? If so there are some fixes for it. I fixed my friends when I sold him my S3. His PC did it.
Yes, a couple of times it did that. Now it just does nothing.
If you try and remove the device from your device manager does it do anything?
Right click on computer and go to properties to get to the device manager.
What would it be named? I looked through all the usb stuff and everything else and couldn't find anything that would be my device.

It would be any device with a yellow Triangle and an Exclamation point on it. Also uninstall KIES and your Samsung USB drivers, then reboot. Get updated USB drivers from the S4 link in my signature.
It did the same thing and game me the unknown device thing. It also said that the device malfunctioned. I guess ill just try again.

Ok let's try this fix first.
1. Remove phone from PC and shutdown and remove battery to shut off phone.
2. Plug USB cable into PC and phone.
3. Put battery back in and boot phone but…
4. As the phone boots, hold down Volume up and down and don't let go until you see you are in safe mode on the phone. It should say safe mode on the front screen.
5. This should reboot your phone into download mode and install drivers that are needed.
6. Your PC will indicate and recognize the phone.
7. Now if you check the notification drop down on your phone you should see USB/MTP options there in the notification area. MTP should be checked.
Still no luck. Maybe later I will re-install windows or just re install every driver on my computer.
The other fix to try is listed below.
1. Uninstall any previous instance of Kies/USB driver
2. Download the latest Kies, specific to your S3.
3. Download Samsung USB drivers 1.4.6.0 (I've tried newer versions but they all failed)
4. REBOOT
5. Disconnect from internet (VERY IMPORTANT!!! - forcing Windows to install local drivers ONLY)
6. With the phone disconnected, install Kies + USB drivers downloaded in steps 2,3
7. Connect the phone and let Windows install the drivers.
8. Reestablish the internet connection.

If that doesn't work PM my your system specs IE RAM, CPU, and HDD Space and current OS.
The computer doesn't do anything when I plug the phone in. The only thing that starts to happen is that the phone starts charging.

Send me the PM with the requested info.
I'm not really requesting anymore info. I am just going to re install windows because I have done so much stuff to this install that it is time for a new one.
Bump
Any luck? My computer won't recognize my phone either anymore.

My experience with the "Device Malfunctioned" thing was due to a bad cable. It would charge, but wouldn't allow me to connect.
You might also try a different USB port on your computer. Often times the connectors on the back of a desktop system, which are hardwired to the motherboard, work more reliably than the front ones.
