G1 running ICS - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/24/htc-g1-gets-a-taste-of-ice-cream-sandwich-video/
If the G1 can run ICS, any phone can. Now there's no excuses

I had this same idea when I saw this. Now never can tell Ace is to low for ICS!

Exactly! Now its just a matter of time....

ACE can run ICS 4 fastly but we need Compatible v6 CPU

really great to hear guaranteed ICS for ace......

no one said about any guarantee. its just probality

Good news for all android user.

Hehe.. thats great news.. can't wait for ICS on my ace..

Just wait for cm8.
We'd be the last family of devices to get ICS TBH if ever
I believe it has the chance of getting ICS but definetly not from Samsung. SGA has a very large amount of users and skillful developers who could make it happen.
We may have to be patient though.. Even Nexus S, which has the official support from Google, hasn't even recieved the upgrade yet. CMIIW.

They won't be pushing ICS to Nexus S when Prime hasn't even been out and ICS unveiled in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

Yeah.. Lame old marketing tactics lol.
By the way, I've seen some leaked videos of Prime and S running ICS and from there I could understand that even S wont have the exact same version of ICS the Prime will have... Well at least for the GUI.
Have a look at this.

If I had to choose I'd rather have a completely stable and optimized Gingerbread instead of an ICS. Stable meaning every feature working the way it should, like my wifi actually reconnecting after sleep.
The main advantages on ICS are:
1) dual core support and hardware accelerating
2) New UI.
Because neither of those are relevant to Galaxy Ace, I'm fine with Gingerbread.
But XDA developers are really fast and they will port ICS even if Samsung wouldn't.
but i have heard taht the update will be for 1 yr old devices i think galaxy ace is 1 yr old only...so we can get

Yeah maybe for some high-end devices that is..
And really, I wouldnt expect much from Samsung in the term of firmware updates.
Maybe we could just put our hope on a new ICS-based CM instead
google announced that it will be available for the first 18 months for existing phones...

Yup there's a new agreement for companies to provide software updates till the 1 year or so is up. We're probably getting it but of course they will prioritize.
New version of OS is one of marketing tricks to lure people into buying new phones, I'm quite sure that we won't see ICS stock from Samsung, but nevermind, we have great developers, so just wait for CM 8 an' see

It'd really be pointless though. ICS is a much more optimised version of HC which should bring full SMP support through software, something that has gone begging for quite a while to take advantage of phones like the S2. Maybe they are adding GPU rendering as well. Another useless perk for the Ace as the GPU is ****.
Also, why bother porting ICS to ARMv6? It's a complete waste of resources when it's almost likely to provide little to no benefit.
My opinion at least. Don't get your hopes up for ICS/ICS-based CM8.
I know (SGA even don't have flash) but at least they'll take some interface tweaks and eyecandies

And what about some battery improvements in ICS? Maybe the phone won 't go faster but battery life could be higher. Or am i wrong?

Speed and Power: If you're gonna use it stock-like, its gonna let you down. After you at least upgrade it to Gingerbread, the phone is gonna suck. Its really good afterwards. Then it depends what custom rom or scrips you want on it to make it even better.
Community: As you can see, we're here to help. But PLEASE for the love of god, GOOGLE BEFORE MAKING THREADS. We've been having problems with new noobs posting threads on every little issue they face. But as I can see, you're not new to XDA so we'll be glad to welcome you here.
Camera: The camera is awesome. 5MP and shoots 640x480 DVD quality video.
Price: It depends where you're getting it from and who you're getting it from. But from the prices I've seen it at, I can tell you its worth the money.
Get the Ace and join us!
Not trying to sound impolite but there was a few threads just like this one, they are pretty up to date. To summarize; the answer is no. Why? Since there are better alternatives.

Well, he's asking about the Ace for a reason. Otherwise, I'd recommend him to get a Galaxy S2.
He should try Xperia Mini.. Not sure about the community support for it though
if you can wait you might can get ace plus
Well, for starters, xperia mini will get official ice cream sandwich, ace will not. For me, that alone would be the reason for not buying ace. Camera is not great on either of them, though the one on ace should be better.
I'd go for the mini, or another phone, but not ace. At least wait for the plus version, that is if you must have an ace.
whats your budget?
if its big then answer is no
I wouldn't recommend Ace.
First even though 800 MHz is enough for most applications, it's A6 processor.
Internal memory is too low. Unless you tweak your phone, you can't install much apps.
RAM is also low.
No... I'm regretting my purchase now... Look for something like HTC explorer.

if u believe in above all and want mid range phone go for htc salsa because it have 800mhz+512 Mb ram and hve almost 1 day battery while regularlu use alot
wheras motrola defy also have same features and water resistable so u can make video while diving into water
both of camera quality is good
coming to galaxy ace because of its low RAM its not capable of multitasking but ya resale value is good but installing custom ROM speed is far good
it's actually a trade in for my old phone , my old w8 got spoiled alot of time in my hands..about 3 times in a month and my dad got pissed and asked for him to have a trade in ..my dad give him rm 200 while he give me a better phone ...still my budget is about RM700 pretty low ..i had a fren who have an ace but he says this phone is rubbish ..but the desgin is too darn nice its hard to pass..still i am planning to install roms on this phone if i have it ...it seems the review for tbhis phone not too good...
Its ok...The phone is outdated now though. If you have a budget,go with this one.If not,get an AcePlus or something familiar. My view, its okayish
kay..i will see
I don't recomend this phone. It never get official CyanogenMod 7,9 and official MIUI. Also it's probably never get official ICS update.
Look for something with better dovelopment background.
Get yourself a motorola defy if you like modding and all with full support...or else if you want an update of ICS officialy and hd video recording go for the Xperia Mini, all though its a ladies phone

I totally get what you say, but you don't want to wait for ages to put an outdated but optimized OS on your phone? I hope for some BETA tester ROM release from Sony on Xperia S forum as well.
I'm not sure we have to wait all that much longer...
They said it can be end of March/early April, I would assume they would try and release it around then, or at least that beta you speak of. I don't think Sony wants to adopt SE's update reputation, so I would hope they would release it around when they said they will release it.
Jelly Bean is in the works, sure, but it's all down to rumors at the moment to when it will be actually released. If we are one update behind for awhile, I don't really care as long as it's optimized for the phone, and not some half-baked, rushed OS port.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/28/android-5-release-date-jelly-bean_n_1306952.html
I will say that coming from a Nexus S which was running CM9 (ICS), the interface Sony has put on top of Gingerbread does a great job. I thought I'd hate taking the step back but other than a few little bits, it's not that big of a difference. Things like the themed progress bars and buttons really remove some of the ugliness that GB still had.
Don't get me wrong, I am VERY excited about ICS on this device but I don't miss ICS as much as I thought I would. I can certainly hold on for a few weeks.

For the general public, beta roms with problems can cause much more damage reputation-wise (aka "this phone sucks, it crashes all the time lol").
Also, I like how Asus has pushed fast ICS releases for the Transformer, but it does not yet have the stability of the previous HC version. Picking up your tablet/phone for a 3 minutes read and seeing it reboot spontaneously is not that great
So I prefer Sony to be a bit late and get a good ICS release at the first try. And when it comes to the Arc/Arc S, we will know the XPS version will be close

What I would be suggesting is for them to work harder to hit the market at a right time with fully optimized upgrade. If they don't want loss of customer like what they did back in X10 time, they need to still work faster and base on 2011 model upgrade and what we saw, they are on a right track.

How many brands have upgraded their lineup to ICS so far "at a right time and fully optimized"? If Sony delivers an upgrade before end of Q2 they're still in a comparable time with other brands unless all the others suddenly deliver it in the following 1-2 months, because so far only Samsung (that is the biggest Android manufacturer at the moment) is barely pointing to an imminent SGS2 upgrade (based on rumors, not even officially yet).

Here's your choice.
1.Be the first that has ICS.
2.Wait 2 more months and get a fully optimised ICS, totally optimised for your phone. That probably runs better than a HTC or Samsung on ICS with the same specs.
btw ICS isn't a super drastic update or something, you're acting like it's the difference between Window 3.11 and Windows 7.

Htc have already released ics for their sensation phones, also alot of manufacturers would have phones released next month with ics onboard.
I'm not buying the Xperia S until the ics update comes out, it just doesn't feel right to spend $600+ aud on a high end phone that comes with a 1.5 yrs old os that my current phone is running. If ics doesn't come out by april. I'm buying a new phone from the other manufacturers which does have ics.

It is (probably more like xp to windows 7), just hw acceleration and support for the google chrome browser is reason enough for the upgrade.
ICS is the only reason I am upgrading from my n1
Well, thanks for all the comments up there ^^^.
I did the ICS upgrade that ZD did in arc board and have it on my arc and it was based on Vanilla ICS. I got the best battery and performance I have ever got on any android phone (owned 4 so far)
Second, optimization with Sony won't be there ever. While I agree there are lots of work with custom UI and setting and adding extra stuff that Sony does't with their on-top of OS thing, but if you pay attention, the OS on Xperia S 2.3.7 that should be optimized, its not even close to being optimized. Battery is like hell, I got rid of all the junk apps (bascially everything) and have nothing to run live, plus battery of this phone is bigger that arc (yes, screen is larger as well) but still not close even to arc.
I like to be optimist about this situation, but I was more hoping for a Beta version so maybe our beloved developers could make something out of it.
You guys don't worry, I won't be waiting for Sony to release its optimized ICS since I really don't care about the UI.
I hope I didn't go over board since we are all here to have fun.

You mean the Sensation ICS update officially released only in a couple of countries with bugs as idiot as links not opening in the browser?
If your priority is having ICS and Jelly Bean when released ASAP your only real option is a Nexus Galaxy. As of today Android is still a train wreck when it comes to OEM updates...
you people should look at SGSII forums.People are complaining about the rushed ICS official update.

ICS vs GB on the Minis

With the new ICS roms/kernels appearing and the huge enthusiasm for them, I'm actually left wondering why?
Given what we know from SE posting on the topic in their dev blog, surely ICS will never run as fast or as effectively as GB on our small phones?
So specifically, what does ICS bring to the table for our phone which GB does not?
Sure, it gets a new styles GUI but that's about it. The under-the-hood fundamental differences surely decrease it's suitability to our hardware.
Now I am not knocking anyone making roms/kernels here and I'm all for doing stuff just for fun, or to see if I can. However I can't help think that a bug free GB will always be superior for our phones than ICS?
Not necessarily, the aokp and miui beta 3 roms by stelios97, which are based on ics, but run on the nAa-11 kernel show a fair amount of promise in speed and stability. I'm very much looking forward to improvements in the miui-rom especially.
As far as the ICS kernel and MiniCM9 by nAa are concerned, they're still very early works with lots of bugs to be ironed out. I am sure in future iterations you will see lots of improvement in the overall user experience.
All that said though, my phone worked perfectly fine on eclair too, so i guess it's all about what you want from your phone, nothing is perfect, and different people have different needs or expectations.
I just love to see that our little devices are capable of so much more than people think or expect, so for what it's worth... there will come a time when it will be impossible for us to run the latest android, but i don't think that time is here yet.

I remember the firsts steps in development of froyo and after Ginger, the first versions were very buggy but now you can see smooth roms of those versions, the same is going to happen to ICS.
We all know that our devices are not supposed to run ics... But as we all have seen all those months of x10 mini development, all versions start all buggy and in the end, are fully optimized for our devices....

Gingerbread was the last phone-only android, Honeycomb was meant to be a tablet-optimized operating system, and with ICS google wanted to combine the two, that's why they never released the source for honeycomb, they didn't want it to run on phones. From ICS on, Google thinks they've solved the problem of different resolutions and use-cases...
So from now on, every android-release is meant to run on tablets as well as phones.. you can't blame them for aiming at increasing hardware capabilities, after all, you wouldn't expect to run Windows 7 on hardware that ran just fine on windows98.
Eventually, our little devices just don't have enough power to run the latest and grreatest operating systems... deal with it...
I remember when I installed the GB for the first time, e the bugs and speed in this was worse then in ICS (CM9) that I flash last week...
I'll report all bugs I see in ICS and wait to be fix.
I liked much more this ICS then the last GB released.
(Sorry my bad english)
I'm using CM9 right now and liked more than CM7, I have better performance and battery life than before, with few bugs of course, but I can live with that. The guys are really doing a great job with ICS! The GUI is amazing!
Don't forget what anancr said "I remember the firsts steps in development of froyo and after Ginger, the first versions were very buggy but now you can see smooth roms of those versions, the same is going to happen to ICS"

[Q] Some advice please!

Hi everyone!
I' m about to buy a used atrix 4g and I want some advice.
Should I buy this phone or is it too old and I shall look something else (like a sony xperia sole)?
Are there any good Jelly Bean roms to flash?
What about the user experience? Is it good at playing games and multitasking?
Please give me some info about this phone!!
Thanks in advance,
Petros.
It's stuck on GB and current JB or ICS roms are marginal.
I would say it depends on what price you're getting it for and how badly you need/want ICS or JB
Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app
First of all, thank you for your reply!
I don't want to use GB, I want a good JB rom to flash. Is there any?
I am going to buy it at about 120 euros, while xperia sole costs at least 200 euros. Both dual core with a good GPU.
What do you mean "marginal"? They are not good? Not fast/stable? What about battery drain?
A 100% stable ICS/JB ROM for the Atrix does not exist. If you want decent stability for day-to-day usage, you are stuck with GB. (Personally, I wouldn't call it "stuck" since GB is working exceptionally well for me and I have no desire to switch anytime soon.) In fact, the ICS/JB on the Atrix situation is far more complicated than you probably think.
You might want to go over a few threads over at the dev section to get an idea.
Just fast and stable with working wifi camera and bt.
So you suggest me to look another device for running ICS/JB??
If running ICS/JB is really that important to you, then yes.
On current ICS/JB builds the wifi works, the bluetooth mostly works (depends on what you want to do with it), and the camera is kinda glitchy.
But are these roms smooth at working and fast?
It is pitty to see such a good device not having nice ics roms! A dual-core device with 1gb ram should be having fun running ics or jb..

Yes, for the most part. It really depends on what you do, and also who you ask.
I'm still on GB (I feel perfectly comfortable on it), so I cannot pass my own judgement or impressions.

I don't think there is a single person here who would disagree, but try telling Motorola that...
The atrix is a great phone, good hardware, only have a problem that is no oficial ICS or JB,but for me a CM 7 is great,no lags and very stable.
I'm ahardcore gamer and at the moment all the games run smooth,no lags. I already played dead triger, riptide GP,GTA III,shadows guns and other ''BIG'' games.

No i don't want to get another phone to run cm7. I used to have a nexus one about a year ago and it was running jb 4.1.1 flawlessly. so i don't want to go to gb. now i use an xperia x10 running 4.0.4 with the cam corder not working, and in general it is not very smooth.

It might be a good option in some time, but not right now.

thanks man for your interest
as a matter of fact i was wondering the same thing whether i should change from my atrix or just stick with it. I love my atrix. very good phone. i tried several different roms and i am running CM10 by emerson pinter now. it has been the best rom yet that i have found and am going to stick with this for a while until they come out with something new or an official JB rom. i have had no lag whatsoever and has not crashed not one time....knocking on wood now. the gaming is still great with the kernel for overclocking to 1300Mhz. And to beat all it was relatively easy...lol only problem is the camcorder doesnt work and there may be something else but i haven't found it yet. just read and read some more before you decide. hope this helps a little

And to beat all it was relatively easy...lol only problem is the camcorder doesnt work and there may be something else but i haven't found it yet. just read and read some more before you decide. hope this helps a little

thank you my friend! it helped me a lot!!! what about the battery life??
finally i bought it
If you want perfect and good JB rom There is none for Atrix. I would buy the LG Nexus 4 if I were you.
