Any word yet on a solid release date for ICS on the Xperia S?
UPDATED ICS FAQ!

To avoid 1500 threads being created around this same thing I have created this thread as the official ICS discussion thread for the Xperia S.
I dont really understand Sony's policy about software , you're creating a new phone which relaesed in feb 2012 and the most current software is ice cream sandwich and the phone comes with gingerbread , it sounds like you creating a high end notebook and it comes with vista ,
you sucks Sony , believe me I'm telling this just buying Xperia S a few hours ago .
even though u sucks , u dont destroy my feelings about sony

I totally get what you say, but you don't want to wait for ages to put an outdated but optimized OS on your phone? I hope for some BETA tester ROM release from Sony on Xperia S forum as well.
I'm not sure we have to wait all that much longer...
They said it can be end of March/early April, I would assume they would try and release it around then, or at least that beta you speak of. I don't think Sony wants to adopt SE's update reputation, so I would hope they would release it around when they said they will release it.
Jelly Bean is in the works, sure, but it's all down to rumors at the moment to when it will be actually released. If we are one update behind for awhile, I don't really care as long as it's optimized for the phone, and not some half-baked, rushed OS port.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/28/android-5-release-date-jelly-bean_n_1306952.html
I will say that coming from a Nexus S which was running CM9 (ICS), the interface Sony has put on top of Gingerbread does a great job. I thought I'd hate taking the step back but other than a few little bits, it's not that big of a difference. Things like the themed progress bars and buttons really remove some of the ugliness that GB still had.
Don't get me wrong, I am VERY excited about ICS on this device but I don't miss ICS as much as I thought I would. I can certainly hold on for a few weeks.

For the general public, beta roms with problems can cause much more damage reputation-wise (aka "this phone sucks, it crashes all the time lol").
Also, I like how Asus has pushed fast ICS releases for the Transformer, but it does not yet have the stability of the previous HC version. Picking up your tablet/phone for a 3 minutes read and seeing it reboot spontaneously is not that great
So I prefer Sony to be a bit late and get a good ICS release at the first try. And when it comes to the Arc/Arc S, we will know the XPS version will be close

What I would be suggesting is for them to work harder to hit the market at a right time with fully optimized upgrade. If they don't want loss of customer like what they did back in X10 time, they need to still work faster and base on 2011 model upgrade and what we saw, they are on a right track.

How many brands have upgraded their lineup to ICS so far "at a right time and fully optimized"? If Sony delivers an upgrade before end of Q2 they're still in a comparable time with other brands unless all the others suddenly deliver it in the following 1-2 months, because so far only Samsung (that is the biggest Android manufacturer at the moment) is barely pointing to an imminent SGS2 upgrade (based on rumors, not even officially yet).

Here's your choice.
1.Be the first that has ICS.
2.Wait 2 more months and get a fully optimised ICS, totally optimised for your phone. That probably runs better than a HTC or Samsung on ICS with the same specs.
btw ICS isn't a super drastic update or something, you're acting like it's the difference between Window 3.11 and Windows 7.

Htc have already released ics for their sensation phones, also alot of manufacturers would have phones released next month with ics onboard.
I'm not buying the Xperia S until the ics update comes out, it just doesn't feel right to spend $600+ aud on a high end phone that comes with a 1.5 yrs old os that my current phone is running. If ics doesn't come out by april. I'm buying a new phone from the other manufacturers which does have ics.

It is (probably more like xp to windows 7), just hw acceleration and support for the google chrome browser is reason enough for the upgrade.
ICS is the only reason I am upgrading from my n1
Well, thanks for all the comments up there ^^^.
I did the ICS upgrade that ZD did in arc board and have it on my arc and it was based on Vanilla ICS. I got the best battery and performance I have ever got on any android phone (owned 4 so far)
Second, optimization with Sony won't be there ever. While I agree there are lots of work with custom UI and setting and adding extra stuff that Sony does't with their on-top of OS thing, but if you pay attention, the OS on Xperia S 2.3.7 that should be optimized, its not even close to being optimized. Battery is like hell, I got rid of all the junk apps (bascially everything) and have nothing to run live, plus battery of this phone is bigger that arc (yes, screen is larger as well) but still not close even to arc.
I like to be optimist about this situation, but I was more hoping for a Beta version so maybe our beloved developers could make something out of it.
You guys don't worry, I won't be waiting for Sony to release its optimized ICS since I really don't care about the UI.
I hope I didn't go over board since we are all here to have fun.

You mean the Sensation ICS update officially released only in a couple of countries with bugs as idiot as links not opening in the browser?
If your priority is having ICS and Jelly Bean when released ASAP your only real option is a Nexus Galaxy. As of today Android is still a train wreck when it comes to OEM updates...
you people should look at SGSII forums.People are complaining about the rushed ICS official update.

does our sga is capeble of getting the android 4.0 ice cream sadwich update or we have to be happy with gingerbred only???????????
Just wait for cm8.
We'd be the last family of devices to get ICS TBH if ever
I believe it has the chance of getting ICS but definetly not from Samsung. SGA has a very large amount of users and skillful developers who could make it happen.
We may have to be patient though.. Even Nexus S, which has the official support from Google, hasn't even recieved the upgrade yet. CMIIW.

Yeah.. Lame old marketing tactics lol.
By the way, I've seen some leaked videos of Prime and S running ICS and from there I could understand that even S wont have the exact same version of ICS the Prime will have... Well at least for the GUI.

couldnt agree more
If I had to choose I'd rather have a completely stable and optimized Gingerbread instead of an ICS. Stable meaning every feature working the way it should, like my wifi actually reconnecting after sleep.
The main advantages on ICS are:
1) dual core support and hardware accelerating
2) New UI.
Because neither of those are relevant to Galaxy Ace, I'm fine with Gingerbread.
But XDA developers are really fast and they will port ICS even if Samsung wouldn't.
but i have heard taht the update will be for 1 yr old devices i think galaxy ace is 1 yr old only...so we can get

Yeah maybe for some high-end devices that is..
And really, I wouldnt expect much from Samsung in the term of firmware updates.
Maybe we could just put our hope on a new ICS-based CM instead
google announced that it will be available for the first 18 months for existing phones...

Yup there's a new agreement for companies to provide software updates till the 1 year or so is up. We're probably getting it but of course they will prioritize.
New version of OS is one of marketing tricks to lure people into buying new phones, I'm quite sure that we won't see ICS stock from Samsung, but nevermind, we have great developers, so just wait for CM 8 an' see

It'd really be pointless though. ICS is a much more optimised version of HC which should bring full SMP support through software, something that has gone begging for quite a while to take advantage of phones like the S2. Maybe they are adding GPU rendering as well. Another useless perk for the Ace as the GPU is ****.
Also, why bother porting ICS to ARMv6? It's a complete waste of resources when it's almost likely to provide little to no benefit.
My opinion at least. Don't get your hopes up for ICS/ICS-based CM8.
I know (SGA even don't have flash) but at least they'll take some interface tweaks and eyecandies

Best we may see is a theme.
And what about some battery improvements in ICS? Maybe the phone won 't go faster but battery life could be higher. Or am i wrong?

JellyBean was ported form the Nexus Devices that were given out at I/O, is there a chance that a developer will port this to the maxx and og razr?
oh. my. god. i am going to have to switch to iPhone or go mad.
someone or some people will be allready on it and why not if tyhe source code is out
ICS is nice but i get the feeling its gonna be Androids Vista people might just skip for Jellybean
Some of us my friend still don't have ICS....let alone JB
Sources not available yet... But i think that changes only affects android platform and not kernel. All HW accel was done in 4.0, so 4.1 should only optimize android itself (dalvik, gui underlying libraries, etc).
Nexus and RAZR share same CPU (OMAP4430/4460 - the only difference is CPU freq, so technically we can use libs from nexus without any problem and without recompilation since libraries already optimized for or CPU), same GPU (PVR SGX 540, however nexus's GPU is slightly overclocked) - so H/W accel should not be a problem
So there is a good change that someone will port 4.1 to our devices. Or maybe i'm just wrong
I just played w my buds verizon nexus on the team vicious jelly bean and it is nice! Smooth. Siri like voice assistant that really does a lot. I didn't expect it to be such a large update. I like and of course am hoping to get it on the RAZR soon but as it is ics is very very nice

That sounds like an excellent strategy, because as we all know, hearing about a new OS makes our phones turn from great to absolutely unusable piles of junk. And, I want to help. I'll offer you FIVE DOLLARS for your Razr. SIX dollars if it's a Maxx. AND, I'll throw in an additional quarter if it has a 32gb or larger memory card. You can put this money towards a new iPhone 4s!
WOW, it feels great helping people! Yay me!
I'm going to wait a little while long for the OTA for ICS in Canada (rogers), but i'm getting tired of waiting!!! lol for my first android phone, was expecting a little more, but... after a "little while" i'm going to figure out how to push a image of ICS lol
i hope JB comes to the razr, but i'll just be happy with ICS

Seriously, just because JB has been announced, doesn't make ICS any less awesome. It flies on the Razr, I love it (leaked .211). It seems like now people are starting to get the attitude that just because JB is going to be released soon, makes ICS ancient and unworthy for their device. I've seen people across this, and other forums, talking about selling their phones to get one that JB will be released to at some point. Unless you get a pure Google phone, like the Nexus, you won't be getting an upgrade to JB anytime soon. All manufacturers operate in the same mindset. Ventures that make them money is priority one, followed by other things, then other things, and then upgrading to the latest and greatest for existing devices sits kind of low. If the kernel source turns out to be an ICS based kernel, I'm sure that one of the devs will be cranking out a version for us to flash in SS 2.0.
From the sounds of it we should at least get some sort of port. One thing that concerns me is how the performance boost will affect battery. The whole 60fps thing would surely eat through any power source. My bro has a gnex so I'll see soon enough.

Let's try to keep some perspective... this fall, it's released, then the manufacturers and carriers go through the process to make it work on their own hardware, and it gets pushed in Q1 or Q2 of 2013.
This is not an impending thing.
Do I have too much faith in da devs then? My old device was a desire z and got ics ported to it about 6 weeks after release. The RAZR is much close in hardware to the gnex and ics is much closer in code to jb. I'm not putting money on it but I am hopeful.

the devs at droidrazr.com are already going to be working on porting jellybean to the razr & maxx. as far as an ota since 4.1 is a minor update it shouldn't take moto long to get it going for us.

LOOK AT moto with ICS and not only them but every other manufacturer ICS was released over a year ago and now its finally being pushed out to the razr barely. So when JB gets pushed out to the razr and thats a big if I would just hold my breath for about a year or more. Or do like every one else flash a rom based on jb. which should be out by the start of next year or the end of this year.

we may never get as ive said before. but IF we do id say by the end of summer or fall maybe.
John Cooper, UK Product Manager for Sony Mobile, has been taking questions from customers on Facebook and, perhaps inadvertently, revealed that both the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S and Xperia mini pro will not receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.
We have been waiting for Sony to make an official statement on their Jelly Bean upgrade plans and this is the first concrete news we have on the matter. The Xperia arc S was the highest specced 2011 Sony Xperia handset, so if this handset isn’t getting it we can conclude that none of the other Xperia handsets from the 2011 range will get the update either. However, the 2012 Xperia range do look likely to get the update, although timing remains an unknown right now.
Its funny that many of the 2012 Xperia handsets have lower specs than the 2011 models. It sux! anw, we can hope for a developer to port JB for 2011 Xperia lineup. & Cynomod10 is coming with JB
Credit goes to www.xperiablog.net
http://www.xperiablog.net/2012/07/26/official-2011-sony-xperia-handsets-will-not-get-android-4-1-jelly-bean/
They have made a mistake
Xperia 2011 handets should have had that minor upgrade to Jelly Bean, especially given the performance issues. Also, it means those handsets are stuck permanently on 2.6 Linux kernel, unless one goes the custom ROMs way. Thankfully, Cyanogenmod devs are supporting Xperia Mini Pro, so I am starting on a quest to root my SK17i.
Jelly Bean would be slow on our phones if official update was done. Sony will push own Timescape UI inside instead of Butter UI, so we don't get any performance improvements in UI.
It's a shame, but it was expected...
Yeah, i also expect 2012 xperias will probably get Jelly Bean update around this time next year (+/- couple months), just before Key Lime Pie comes out

I wonder....
does anyone remember Xperia x10i? the funniest was they came from Donut 1.6 to GingerBread 2.3. they've got 3 official FW update.. and me guess we still have a chance.. Our device is not low range since we have 512 ram inside. and some of Xperia 2012 family also have the same type.
I was expecting this. They won't update 2011 xperia phones to JB. But they will update 2012 xperias. If I buy another phone, it won't be a Sony. Maybe a Nexus 7 but not a Sony. I was very disappointed with the ICS update. Can't imagine a JB for our phones, maybe to slow...
Long live to Gingerbread! xD

The thing is that to be able to create stable custom roms you need support from the manufacturer. Without proper source code or hardware drivers/libraries that suit the new OS developers have to tack everything together which greatly increases the chances of bugs.
IMHO the least thing Sony could do is provide a proper hardware layer to developers to give them a solid base to work from. Nobody really needs the Sony customisations anyway so they could actually save a lot of development time there.
Personally I'd wish all android phones came with AOSP, like what Apple and Microsoft do. It saves the manufacturers a lot of development and opens the way for more frequent/longer OS updates.
All hope of custom rom
**** Sony, where's Ericsson when we need him?

Personally I buy an SE phone for the hardware (who else makes a tiny phone with a useable hardware keyboard?) while knowing you can optimise the thing to personal taste by modding the firmware and using apps.
As for updates the Mini Pro got 200% of what it's predecessor got (the X10 Mini Pro which only got Eclair).

Tbh I don't understand why people are so avid on updates, os improvement doesn't mean your phone will work better (especially if it isn't designed for certain technical specs).
As a matter of fact no ics rom performs, lasts as much as gb ones, just the same way a pentium I 133 with 10gig hd can't run win7....
So maybe it's just me, but i really don't get what the fuss is about, not to reach the point of a petition at least.
Sony as of Q4 2011 sold 32,597,500 units (only smartphones, this does not include ps3, sony music etc). A good developer here on xda reaches on average 5 to 6.000 thanks for a modded rom, assuming there are many ungreatful people out there let's double it, that's still 10.000 times short than the market share....why would they care?
Whatever the case is, if an official version doesn't come out someone will port it and there still will be enough to play around with until our phones will eventually be replaced by newer ones
I like but ................

I respect your thinking but if the device is capable of running the software then why the company is not developing the update if no update then they should give at least the Pure Android OS Software without their customization or any thing extra with all the drivers and kernel. or they may supply the appropriate drivers for the other developers like FXP to support their devices unofficially in the background.
The x mini pro is capable to runing JB ? U must be kiding

+1. Either stop whining or get a life guys(and a new phone too!)
It's all their marketing trick.. if they give jb update to 2011 devices, they think that people will not go for the new devices, instead they will go for 2011 devices with less price and comparable hardware..

Oh god! Finally!

Wow! I just fell off my chair! Gimme now lol
I cannot bloody wait! Thank you Sony!
But not for the UK? Has release as USA :'(
No Australia?
The last time Sony VAIO released an Android update, American got it, then a few months later, so did Europe - that was Release 5 for the Sony Tablet.
However, seeing as though that is just a USA forum, in the past, ALL Xperia Tablet S updates have been released at the same time.
Eagerly awaiting the release notes. Mobile Bravia Engine, please!
I'm pretty sure that it will be a global release, we will have to wait till afternoon tomorrow here in europe!

Always has been with this Tablet.
I expect he's just saying that as he is a rep for the US.
Project Butter at last. The main thing (other than the random shutdowns) that bugs me about ICS is the 30fps animations.
60fps here we come...welcome to 2013!!! Fingers crossed for a European/UK launch!
Even if its not a UK release just yet, I'm interested to see if its different or whether they've included the new Sony Mobile launcher. Given this is 4.1.1 after all....
I was hoping for a new feature from Sony here.
If its a good release, I'll cancel my pre order.

Ooooh, interesting - not tempted by the boost in screen res/features? Or just not that fussed about shelling out £400+ within 7/8 months? Will just need to wait and see. My XTS is destined for the graveyard anyway so this will just make its passage to the next life a little more...buttery.
I do enjoy using this device, nice screen size, good processor, so if the JB release doesn't differ much to the Xperia Tablet Z, then not much point upgrading!
Besides which, the XTZ is still over a month away!
Something tells me though that Jellybean won't arrive here for quite sometime...(UK)
Oh, and i just bought a new car
Bit skint.

Fair enough then, makes sense! I am still fingers crossed for the Jelly Bean launch today but, as you say, not holding out that much hope. Since using Nova Launcher I get far fewer shutdowns etc anyway so not too fussed.
OT: What car did you get??
Who knows that if there is a 4.1 update for the sony tablet S?
I think the users of sony tablet S are forgotten.....

Sony have already announced that the original Tablet S will not be getting upgraded to Jelly Bean I am afraid.
Let's hope the post doesn't get deleted this time

Sony's not even released the release notes yet. If we don't get the update soon in the UK, at least give us the release notes!
There's no word on Sony GB's pages.
But saying that, USA hasn't 'properly' woken up yet lol

It will come out today in Portugal as they've updated the info on Sony update site. http://www.sony.pt/support/pt/product/sgpt121e1_s
Procedimento de actualização do software | 18 /04 / 2013 (Procedure of software update)
Actualização de sistema Android 4.1.1 Actualizar já (Upgrade of Android system 4.1.1 - Upgrade now)
Even tough, the link isn't working and the System update on the tablet isn't allowing to update as it says that the System is updated. It will only be a matter of hours I suppose!
Why 4.1.1 though?
Sony VAIO always seem to be one iteration behind a release. 4.0.3 instead of 4.0.4, I was looking forward to the single gesture notifications.
Not alot of new features really, certainly when you consider it has supposed to have been in development since last September. No Mobile Bravia Engine which is a shame.
DLNA Function? I thought this had DLNA?
I don't know. I stopped trying to understand them since I think they don't really know what they're doing. Nevertheless, the changelog seems a little bit narrow and is only available on GB site (Portuguese and French sites haven't) so I hope the performance enhancements have a little bit more to add to it. Are you able to download it? I'm not.

Can't download as of yet, no.
A few users in Japan on XperiaBlog report having the update. They've commented on the JB XTS thread.
Hope they've done some work on the front end UI.
