Best Rom/Kernel/Modem combination for working GPS - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been trying for weeks to get GPS to work on my rooted phone. I've tried many ROMS, Kernels, and modems. GPS does not work at all. It worked occasionally on the stock Verizon software. After rooting, the only time GPS worked was once on MIUI, but didn't work again. Tonight I tried Cyanogenmod nightly #98, Glitch v13 kernel, with a bunch of different modems. GPS didn't work with any of them, data was between horrible and 40 kB/s, but that might be my area.
I just don't want to pick another ROM and blindly try kernels and modems for hours with no results.
What ROM/kernel/modem combination works the best for working GPS for you guys?

Try eh03 superclean with TKS bleeding edge kernel.
better to be safe than odining - me

You prolly have something wrong with your hardware. Pool party (mtd rom) gets me a lock with 9 of 11 birds in 6 seconds. And I get same results on stock.
good day.

I have the same problem. I'm convinced its hardware. Worked great for months and then just stopped. I can get it working maybe 5% of the time. Have used every Rom at one point or another, if it happened to you to it has to be hardware.

Im happy with stock eh03 kernal, sc03 rom. Gps lock within 5-8sec. Lot faster then pwgb with tksb 11-16. But i do like pwgb and tksb. Fast and stable. 21-2300 quadrant. With vm hep, voltage control, adrenaline shot ix.
For now, eh03. So far so good..quadrant is around 1600. Not bad. Stable though. Sc03 with tksb 11-16kernal wasnt happy with my phone. Keep rebooting, freezes up..

I haven't tried all the rom combos out there but I had the best results with Powerwashed ED05 froyo. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199851&highlight=ed05

pwgb has the gps working great for me.

GPS was solid but now? )-:

So a little about my phone. I am running a custom ROM Fusion 1.1 with a custom Kernel from Team Whiskey Core V3 2.1 also have OCLF. My phone right after flashing the new ROM seemed to lock on quickly to several Sats 5 plus every time. But for no reason and with no adjustments to the default settings I now have a very hard time locking on to any Sats. Takes 10 plus minutes and only can get a few to lock.
So the only things I have changed on my phone recently is trying a few different Kernels. Would this even effect the GPS sat locks at all? I would think not but??
Anyone have anything new that I have yet to read about that they have tried that seems to make the GPS better?
My phone's GPS might just suck who knows.
Thanks in advance!
Did you try digital toddys fix?

Yea I did.. Just went outside and switched to Cold then delete GPS data ran fix for 10 minutes and got a lock on 4 sats. Switched back to Hot and didn't seem to help much.
You did the reboots and everything?
Odd man, if that didn't work I am at a loss. Hopefully others can chime in for you.
I would think the ROM is what affects GPS signal the most. I was running Bionix 1.9 with KK kernel and the GPS was money. Now running Obsidian V1 (didn't switch to V2 because I read people were having GPS issues on it), and GPS still works great. In fact, when using Car Home, it shows the exact street address I am at.

from what i understand, yes a different kernel can affect gps because the kernel contains the drivers. it is my understanding that this is why the 2.2 roms have working gps now: an 'official' kernel was leaked and the gps drivers were pulled from it. however the rom will also affect gps. for example, i was running bionix 1.9.1 and gps was great, flashed bionix final and gps went to ****, flashed fusion 1.2 and gps was working again.

Rom Kernel Modem, Stable with GPS.

I've tried literally every Rom for my vibrant as they came out over time...and and my GPS sometimes work and don't. Mounting and random little glitches. The most stable rom I've used is 2.1 Stock, and I justed flashed 2.2 Stock. Whats everyone opinions? I thinking decent GPS. XD

Try using gps aids from the market.

Have you tried digitaltoddys fix? It's in the general sticky (signature).
Trigger works perfect for me.
The Trigger or the Axura both provide pretty good GPS. Both, I get 10-15 sats with 5-7 lock 20-40 sec average.
Also, GPS aids and the digitaltoddys fix both work as well. You just have to experiment with them. Plus, when you first test (after fresh flash) you need to let it find for about 3-5 mins for 1st run, after that flawless.......... at least for me
GPS seems very strange in my experience and may depend on your location. Personally I've found KB1 and bionix v 1.3 or trigger to be the best, while others have issues getting locks on this modem. It may be due to hardware differences, but it's tough to narrow it down. Best bet is to experiment and see what works best for you.
I've been using the stock 2.2 and GPS locks instantly. No Mounting issues or data problems. Completely Awesome.
I've using axura without any issue. GPS usually lock within a couple of seconds.

GPS help!

Hey all,
Just wondering what setup everyone has that their gps works fine (i.e. gps lock within 10 seconds). My GPS takes FOREVER to lock on, and most of the time its not even worth waiting for. I am running CM7 build 17, so no nightly builds, and i have the glitch 11 kernel running and the EC09 radio. Any help is appreciated, cause this is my one caveat with this phone. Thanks
Ninja edit: totally didnt see this guide, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239090 when i was looking around...still comment are useful!
My gps works great as long as it can see a cell tower to get it started. Once I'm off grid, it can be painfully slow or not lock at all.
Samsung phones generally aren't the greatest when it comes to gps.
I voided my warranty and your mum.
are you running a custom rom? i honestly think EC09 is the problem..
powerwashed ed05 rom, pbj kernal, ec09 radio. Gps works flawless!

Same thing on all ROMs including stock for me. It's fine until I lose cell signal, then it's crap.

what is the best of the best

i was wondering what everybody was running? Im still on evil fascinate, ed04 (which sucks), with a standard volt kernel running overclocked at 1.24 or it gets all glitchy and force closes. Im wondering what rom, kernel, radio combo works the best these days. Ive been reading all sorts of stuff and am just not oo sure what to go with. I use my phone alot for web surfing, a few games, music, etc. I also wondered if my aftermarket extended battery will work. any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks to all the devs that make this possibel cause without them this phone really sucks ass.
I have been searching for a great daily and after trying the cm7.1 Rom I thought it was great, the only deal breaker for me was the sound issues with speakerphone. So i tried powerwashed and think is great, very stable and reliable.
Hope that helps, try it see what you think.

honestly im not sure how you could consider the speakerphone echo a deal breaker on cm7.1... thats a very minimal issue at best imo, but to each is own. I do agree pwbg is a great rom aswell.
After constantly bouncing around ROMs, this is honestly the best setup I have had thus far: PWGB ROM with the Adrenaline Shot, fixpermissions.zip, EC09 radio, and the GeeWiz 2.1 kernel (very basic kernel, flashed to remove hotspot monitoring). I have tried the custom kernels but they remove a lot of stability for me. Also check out the sweet honeycomb theme for it!
do i just odin the eho9 radio? i have ed04 and i have trouble with having 3g or any signal for that matter. would eh09 be better? will it work with cm7, miui, or powerwsahed?
Yes Odin the ec09 modem...much better than ed04 IMO. Getting 1.3mb down on speakeasy.
I'm still running EC01, even with PWGB. Never had a data/call problem, ever.
I use my speakerphone a lot, so for me it is a deal breaker, it's a great Rom nonetheless
For powerwashed i restored back to original since i had to use the pit file to repatriation, think is great so far.

And here is why you have to try all the roms yourself. i was on powerwashed GB rom and i hated it. Very glitchy and the touchscreen would freeze. Tried everything to try and cure it, adrenaline shot, turning off the 100mhz setting. To make matters worse something in that rom borked my connection to a PC, I couldnt get it to recognize my phone. I tried for 3 days finally got a connection and i dumped that pile. CM7.1 and been pretty good so far tho all roms have glitches you just have to try out what works best for you.
BTW best data connection I ever got was on the EB01 radio, I was getting 1.5 meg down. EC09 was horrible I got around 200k down. I'm on ED05 now will see how it does.
Im set up on powerwashed now and my screen freezes and im constantly takeing screenshots. I think im gonna give espresso a try. Thanks to everyone whos giveing their two cents on this. Greatly appreciated but I guess its trial and error. I do like to see everbodys feedback tho.

Well what I have seen here lately is that their are multiple ways to root. But on top of that all the roms have different glitches. So I'm still stuck with debating and fixing my phone constantly. I'm running an old miui and can't really see a way to try the new 1.10.14.

once the glitch kernel implements Jt's GPS fix, cm7.1 and glitch will be the best and fastest! It's the most overclock and also You can under-volt more than another kernel.

Glitch already is imo... I just use gps booster from market until the fix is implemented. Getting the same gps results as jt's kernal this way.

GPS Problems in either Euphoria and Passion on 2 vibrants

I know there's plenty of GPS problems with this phone, but after reading that GPS works in both the roms i've tried, i think im doing something wrong. This is where i'm at:
After using both of these roms on 2 different vibrants, i can't figure out for the life of me why i cant get the GPS to do anything at all on these roms.
I've used ODIN to go back to stock, and then tried flashing the roms but with no luck.
I dont have any clue how to use Angry GPS either, so i haven't messed with that at all. If i need to change some settings within the app, please enlighten me.
Thanks for anyone who helps me with this problem. The only Rom i know of that i have 100% working GPS is with Team Whiskey's Bionix-V 1.3.1.
Anyone? I dont want to be pushy, i just wanna figure out the problem.
And on a side note, i know i posted in the wrong section.
GPS works but it is also a work in progress as no one knows what is really going on with GPS in the Vibrant. The ROM seems to have little effect on weather the GPS works but the "kernel" that underlies it is where the effort is being placed for a fix. While the GPS works on all the kernels it eventually stops working after some time. It is believed to be an issue with how Android starts and stops different services to save power.
Most users have reported great GPS using Kiss 2.2 kernel in combination with either of the Team-Passion Roms (Passion, Euphoria). The most recent kernel is Kiss 8.2. Get it here:http://team-passion.com/index.php/downloads/galaxy-vibrant
For info on each kernel see here: http://team-passion.com/index.php/forum/2-about-team-passion/283-test-kernels
Keep in mind that the developers in my opinion have been working on these ROMS and Kernels like it was their full time job. And they are determined to make GPS work consistently so give them some encouragement to hopefully keep them motivated as they are likely our only hope.
Passion is a faster more responsive but Euphoria has more customizations baked in. The kernels are interchangeable between these ROMs but they have different performance characteristics.
GPS working after deep sleep on Euphoria
After going through 10 ROMs and 20 Kernals I think I may have a semi working GPS. Running Euphoria RC2.1 with stock KB5 modem and gingerbread bootloaders. Installed these gps fixes
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1550327
Ran ultimate cleaning script then flashed Glitch then the subzero kernel in the same recovery session
CM9-vibrantmtd-Glitch-V14-B6.zip
cwm-subZero-vibrant-1.1VC_build61-CFS_BLN.zip
Lock immediately after boot with angry gps and phone has deep slept multiple times and gps picks up after granted after 50 seconds
I really appreciate the help guys, the Kiss 8.2 kernel fixed the problem in the Euphoria 2.1 ROM. I get locks within 10 seconds, and also better battery life.
So now as far as im concerned, this is the best combo there is.

8.2 did the trick for me. Locked up in under 20 seconds, and I'm inside my house (by a window) Don't know about deep sleep recovery, but I'll let you know.
You really need to change to Chimera v2.2
