Hello everybody,
First I'd like to thank to community for the hard work. I v read a countless amount of pages of this forum and I can't even imagine the time people spent helping on issues or writing tutorials.
So thank you if you re up to spend few minutes on my specific case (and sorry for the bad english).
Here is my device and the different version of kernel ...
1/ Rooting my device (tutorial in french translated from xda)
http://www.cnetfrance.fr/produits/guide-rooter-son-galaxy-s2-39763841.htm
S-Root version used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
Everything went pretty well when I rooted the GS2. I got the Superuser app so i figure it's ok.
I just used a modified kernel found on xda who was corresponding the my base band version (just the PDA in Odin).
2/ Installing a new ROM (Cyanogenmod by Rom Manager)
I followed : http://www.redmondpie.com/install-cm7-on-galaxy-s2-using-rom-manager-how-to-tutorial/ and http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II:_Full_Update_Guide (official guide) using Rom Manager premium.
When i tried to reboot in Recovery (manually or with Rom Manager), i can't find the "Install the zip" option, I have 4 available: "Update from the zip", the 2 wiping/delete options and the reboot.
So obviously if i try to wipe files, wipe the cache then to update with the zip I have the following Error:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
Do you have any idea what went wrong in the process ?
Should i flash the phone withOdin and change my base band version to another one ?
For info, I did the Permission Fix option in Rom Manager too. Didnt help.
Thanks a lot.
U need clockworkmod instaled first..

You didn't install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Thanks for theses answers but I think I installed it with Rom Manager and i flashed it to the last version.
(joined file 1 : cwm rom manager.jpg)
When i reboot in recovery mode here is the only options available (and it's the problem i pointed out) :
(joined file 2 : 20111125_13221022.jpg)
Maybe a problem with my SD card ?

As we've already said, you haven't installed CWM Recovery. You see at the top of your second photo where it says "Android system recovery (3e)"? That's stock recovery.
you can't install CWM recovery thru ROM manager.
just flash the CF Root Kernel for KI4 thru ODIN , you will have CWM recovery.
Hmm I understand about the CWM version I'm booting with, but as you can see on the first capture, my kernel version is a modified one i got after using Odin (puting this Kernel : GT-I9100_XXKI4_insecure.tar from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671).
I got the root access by S2 Root.
Ok I think I installed only the Kernel and not CF Root available here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I ll try to redo Odin and stuff and let you know if I'm still alive.
So it's not great right now. I have installed CF Root with Odin, so I had CWM on my phone (I could see the application). Then after reboot with CWM Recovery and installing Cyanogenmod, the phone doesnt want to start anymore.....
I tried to apply the insecure kernel again with Odin but still impossible to download. I'm stuck on the screen with the yellow sign and written Galaxy S2.
HALP !!
I just tried to put back the official firware version : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 and put it in my phone with Odin.
Ok, I dont have the yellow sign anywore but the phone is still stuck on the boot screen (where it's written Samsung GALAXY s II)...
What should I try ?
I'm still able to boot with CWM recovery but I didn't make any backup and nothing work.
Do you think the phone is dead ?
5 posts in a row?
So, just to clarify, you've tried to install CM7, which amongst other things tells you to do a nandroid backup, and also to flash twice in succession. Did you do either of these things? The instructions are there to be followed, don't just ignore them.
Ok my bad I didn't backup anything because I had no data to backup. This was maybe a bad move...
Anyway, I tried to flash it twice yes. Right now, i'm working with a modified Kernel (with CF Root), and booting in CWM Recovery. When I want to flash again by installing from the .zip I get a Satus 7 Error.
In CWM, every advanced options are apparently available but I dont know anything about them.
And just so you know, on my SD Card i have 1 update.zip and the update-cm-7.1.0-Galaxys2.... .zip from Cyanogen.

Flash a stock rom with Odin and then root your phone again. Start reading and follow procedures when you want to flash custom roms again .See Intratechs`s thread for a stock rom
Thanks for your reply.
I did it, it didn't work, I mean i could flash with Odin but the reboot doesn't work : the start screen appeared without the yellow sign, but it's stuck on it.
--- update
FYI, I installed Rom Manager yesterday, it way interact in a bad way with CWM Recovery.
For now i can mount USB by CWM Recovery but cannot do anything else.
If you have a method to clean completely the phone ? Maybe the bootloader is broken...

I did it. 20 times .
Maybe I should re partition my SD card...
--- update ---
I re partitionned my SD Card with Odin and tried to install a new stock ROM. Everything pass with Odin but to finalize the set up (while reboot), I got some errors and still the same problem during the boot. It's stuck !
I installed a insecure Kernel so I can access CWM Recovery but still stuck and now I can't mount anything .
Sorry to post again...
Finally I ordered a USB jig in case of...

Hey everyone,
First of all, i apologize if any of what i'm asking here is stuff that has been covered before. I have been searching myself for answers for the last several days and have found plenty of good info, but i am new to android and i think i need to ask some question to help get a base level understanding of what i need to do. I am a bit nervous about bricking my phone so i maybe haven't been as adventurous trying to get everything running as god intended.
Firstly, i have used and understand Odin, using it to flash roms and such. I have rooted the phone and installed ROM Manager and clockworkmod 4.0.1.5 on the phone, but when i boot into recovery mode, it is still on the android recovery 3e and i cannot do the update.zip, I get signature verification failed. Now i KNOW this is cause of the android recovery 3e, and i have found this issue has been encountered plenty before, but my confusion is in some of the solutions i have found. Mainly the terminology and how the steps directly apply to the phone. For example, I found on another forum thread :
1- Copy the Zimage from your rooted kernel and paste it to SD card of your phone.
2- Flash the Stock kernel via Odin to get rid of Yellow triangle.
3- Flash the Zip file (Zimage) via CWM which you've already pasted in Step 1.
i don't really understand what the zimage is. Why do i need it, what IS it frankly? Where do i get it or a stock kernel for my phone. Does versioning matter much? i read that for the most part the kernels are almost identical to each other, and the fact all i really need is for the android recovery mode to be 2e or whatever it is (so it will not do the signature check on the update.zip file), that i don't really need to pay much attention to the actual kernel version.
What i really need i guess is for someone to break it down for me and either explain the steps or give me a detailed step by step on how to get clockworkmod recovery working so i can proceed with the cyanogen mod running on phone (not enjoying touchwiz at all).
Again, sorry if i am giving anyone spasms at my noobish-ness, but i have been searching for my answers for a day or two now and i haven't been able to find anything that really tells me what i need to know.
Phone : GT-I9100M
Android : 2.3.3
Kernal : 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL
Build : GINGERBREAD.UGKG2
Thanks

That means you have not installed it flash CWM and \Root from here .
Root + CWM .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Beware of following instructions from a separate rom to the one you are flashing .
ZImage is the kernel .
Why do i need it, what IS it frankly? Where do i get it or a stock kernel for my phone. You are confusing yourself .
Flash correct CWM from above link .
Choose the custom rom and follow the instructions posted for that rom .
CyanogenMod as the man says
Warning : Not for new users, flash this build only if you know what you are doing !!!

Thanks for the reply. I have been doing more reading and i think i am understanding the rooting process a bit better.
I looked at the link you posted (thanks for that, i saw the forum post for the i9000 but i never could find the i9100 post for some reason) and i DO have another question after reading through a good chunk of the posts on it.
There is no CF Root for my kernel, but the reply that was made to someone else with my kernel version was :
"Flash the Stock 2.3.4 ROM (XXKG5, XXKG6 or XXKG7) and root with CF-Root-XXKG6."
I understand that process and how it works but i thought you were only supposed to flash roms based on your firmware version? My KDD kernel version is running on 2.3.3
Will this cause any issues if i flash the stock 2.3.4 ROM?
Download cm7 zip for the newest nightly.
Copy it to internal sd card.
Flash any cf root kernel
Boot into recovery
Wipe data and cache, you will lose all your data on your phone, so backup sms (I recommend sms backup +), also you will lose App data so you might want to back that up first using something like titanium backup.
Wipe dalvik cache (under advanced)
Chose install zip from sd card
Select the cm7 zip
Reboot
If you get stuck at the boot screen go back into recovery and flash the zip again

Thanks Veyka.
I think i'm ok with the CM7 install process. I am probably going to wait until i really feel like i understand the whole process from front to back before i start messing with that though.
I can't get to that point yet however since i haven't been able to get CWM recovery working yet. I have the Android Recovery 3e, which will not install from zip files that aren't digitally signed.
So i'm trying to get CF Root installed and working, however, as mentioned in my previous post there is no CF Root for my kernel. I would like it clarified if it is ok for me to flash to a 2.3.4 stock ROM (i'm running 2.3.3) and then use a CF root for a the new ROM.
I was under the impression that this was not a good idea.
If i should not be doing this, is there a recommended way to upgrade my firmware to 2.3.4 so i can use a newer CF Root?
Thanks
Pick a new stock rom, I would go for kg6, flash it via odin.
Then flash the kg6 CF root kernel via odin and you will have cwm recovery.
Don't put the pit into odin and don't tick repartition or update bootloader.
There is a good thread with all the info you need on flashing stock roms with odin and a list of all avaliable roms.

Thanks for all the help. I was able to make sense of the process (which is actually quite simple, just needed to put it all together in my head to make sense) and get everything done.
Appreciate all the help!

Hi,
I have rooted my phone using the quick root guide found here and therefore I have my stock kernel back w/ root. Do I need to install a cf root kernel?
Also, when the new ROM gets flashed how does one recover the apps and data lost?

Use Titanium Backup PRO for your app. You can backup all of them then restore on any rom.
Is there anything that Titanium Backup doesn't back up for which I need to use another application?
Thanks.

Well....LOL
Total how many time have you used ODIN, for completing your task (Root & CWM)? in how many lines you can explain your steps?
How many PANIC situations have you passed through?
All this headache could have been avoided if you had searched XDA before rooting your Phone with such a prolonged methed. so please dont recomend the same to others...
Esiest and most followed method for rooting and CWM, is CF-Root, only single line instruction:
Pick the appropreat kernel and flash through ODIN....you have Root + CWM now
Yeah, ROM manager isn't exactly compatible for the S2, so it's not advised to use it. Better off with CF-ROOT and CWM kernel.

I wouldn't have tried this as your phone is i9100P, although I know the difference isn't that big.
Also, was your phone rooted? It had to have been rooted beforehand.

That's your problem. You were on 4.0.3, which is ICS.
The instructions at galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-rooted-galaxy-s2-i9100/ don't specify, but they are for Gingerbread ONLY. The recovery kernel contained within that zip package is ClockworkMod Recovery 4.0.1.4, which is for Gingerbread.
This thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693) is the updated version of that recovery kernel for ICS.
You don't have to flash the full firmware, just flash a kernel that is meant to work with ICS and you should be fine.

EDIT: if i install the kernel you gave me the link to ([KERNEL][ICS] ClockworkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4) , will it remove the root access i had?
EDIT 2: I have just flashed the kernel via odin, and it finally got past the screen with the yellow triangle! However, it is now stuck on the second screen which shows the 'S' logo with the words 'Samsung Galaxy SII' under it. Any more ideas?

No. That download is for a package that must be flashed while the phone is in download mode. That will require you to use a computer, and a flashing tool, such as Odin or Heimdall.

But it appears that this will not give you permanent CWM recovery. Which is what I think he wants.

Well I think Chainfire's CF-Root kernels (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399) are not for i9100P, so not sure if he can achieve permanent CWM recovery. Anyway if he don't plan to flash every hour new ROM he should be fine with latest temporary CWM 6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840223 although will ask Phil about compatibility.
I did find a lot of threads but i didnt get any answer to my question.
I was using a 2.3.6 stock Atrix 4G. I decided on getting the cm9 so i unlocked the bootloader using the following link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871
as i am using the newer version so i was advised to run option 1 of the script( click the link to see the script) and then option 3. I did option 1 and then my phone got stuck in unable to boot and then i ran option 3 and just pressed enter and my phone booted. So i didnt advance on the script and closed the script. Now my phone says UNLOCKED at the m logo while booting.
And then for rooting i used the following link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1769497
i did get some errors while using the coding( as i had typo error) but then after two reboots and trying i got the success on my cmd window.
but i didnt get the same command promt text as upndwn4par( see the link) got. Still i anyhow got success. I checked my apps and super user was indeed sitting there.
After unlocking and rooting i downloaded rom manager and also downloaded cm9.zip file into my sd. Then pressed flash CWM and then also made a backup for my stock ROM and then pressed download from sd card on rom manager , then it asks cleear cache dalvik and backuo. I checked all and then my phone reboots and gets stuck in the ANDROID GUY with an Exclamation mark inside a triangle. I also tried reboot with recovery in ROM manager but the same screen.
I have mentioned all my steps. So please guide me where or what am i doing wrong?
please help , cause moto ditched me and i want to ditch moto's software.

I don't think recovery is installed properly. Try to fastboot flash recovery.

What do you mean "did a little of installation"? You either install or you don't...

Hi everyone.
i rooted my phone with this guide which installed a based CWM recovery on my phone with Siyah-s2-v6.0b4.tar using Odin.
Now i want to run a touch CWM recovery but no matter how i tried- no way worked and i always get the based CWM recovery again.
I tried ROM manager and RECOVERY tools but none of these actually worked (although i got success messages).
I also tried to download the recovery file from the official site of CWM, but when i tried to copy it to my sd card an error message popped out saying copy can't be done and the device is not connected or working or something.. i can copy other zip files without any problem.
can anyone help?
thanks.
1) Do not use Rom Manager with the SGS2. It will break recovery and/or cause bootloops eventually. It may even brick your phone. You don't need it.
2) Any recovery flashed independently of the kernel on the SGS2 will only persist until the next reboot, which is why what you're trying isn't working. If you want a touch version of CWM, flash/run a kernel which has this. Which kernels ? Read the kernel threads in the development section (I don't use PhilZ on my SGS2, but his comes to mind as I use it on my I9505).

thank you very much! i'm relieved i didn't brick my phone, that could have been a mess..
flashing kernels is like regular flashing? just installing the zip file? do i need to wipe any data or cache or something?
thanks for your response.
Follow the flashing instructions for the kernel in question to the letter (always on the first page of the kernel thread, always very clear/precise/easy to follow).
