Since you're new to the Android thing go with this here it has themes you can download from the market and install from inside the application.

thanks for the reply, I should have been more specific. I already have GO SMS Pro installed, its nice but could be better.
my Galaxy S II is rooted, I want to browse the directory on my phone where the SMS app is located and go there and actually replace the images there. that's how I do it on the iPhone, just make the bubbles the way I want them, rename the originals (.bak) respring and done.
thnx again.

Just remember that is for the stock MMS app.
Ok, one final thing.
which one should I change for the incoming message. Im using photo shop to turn the grey SMS incoming bubble to pink. Im guessing its the 4th bubble but is it more than one that I need to change.

Haven't figured it out.
Bump for curiosity if you found a solution for the background.
And thanks for the effort!

could you put the clouds with colors so we can choose and change ourselves!
Anyone ever figure this out? I'd love to have the stock app worth at least a black background! I feel like I've seen gtg post something before

all my efforts are failing but I'll keep at it.
for some reason, when I make the changes then change the extension from .zip back to .apk the app fails to install.
is there a solution for this? why does the installation fail when I change it back to .apk is there some other way I should put it back to .apk?
7zip
I would suggest trying 7zip as an alternate program for handling zip files. It can open/extract apk files without the of renaming it. Simply right click the file, &-zip-> open archive. Then you can drag and drop / replace image files. This prevent having to change the file extension to zip and back to apk.

Update: Changed a couple of icons to make them clearer.
EDIT: New screen shots added. Fixed the folder structure issue.
So, I was getting tired of looking at the off-white icons in the Settings, and I like how some of the Droids (and possibly others) have colored icons in the Settings menu. I whipped this up quickly this afternoon and liked the way it turned out.
No known issues, but you still apply this at your own risk. I am not responsible if it breaks your phone, your home, or your back.

by any chance did this break your wifi/gps settings? I made a sense settings morph but trying to open the gps or wifi setting results in a fc... just wondering if maybe it was just mine...
Nope. Wireless and GPS are both working fine. This morph was strictly just image replacements for the icons.
same thing I did... hmm i wonder what I did wrong?

File structure from the unzip looks wrong. If you go back into metamorph and pick existing themes -> settingsiconmod and go down an extra folder, the XML file is there. Select that and apply.
I will fix the zip later tonight.

There was an extra subfolder that you had to go into to get to the theme control file (the xml). It caused an error in Metamorph (invalid theme control file) when you were unzipping it. It would still work, but you had to go back into Metamorph after it errored out and select it manually. I removed the extra subfolder so it should be in the right spot and Metamorph should not give the error.
I am going to be working on a Morph for the Dialer too soon. I am not a fan of the blue that Samsung chose for everything. Too pale. I am not sure what color(s) to go with yet, but I am going to play around a bit with it.

Hi everyone,
I just recently learned how to theme and create icons for your status bar, so I feel the need to expand on that and help others and create good looking things for them. I'm posting a screen shot of what I have done with my phone and would like to get ideas and/or things that you have done. I know there is a screenshot thread, but this isn't the same. This is coming together to make the best looking icons or best looking color scheme for our phones.
I am using JBoogies Orange deblur Froyo rom and I flashed his red ginger theme for a base to start. A lot of what he did is no longer there, but it was very helpful since I am just starting because it gave me a good idea of what needed to be done.
I don't know how to create a flashable zip, so if I provide you anything it will be an apk that you will overwrite your apk with, unless someone can explain to me how to create the zip.
Anyways, share your ideas.. Here is a few pics of my work so far.
Widgetlcker modded, changed battery icon to draining android, changed wifi icon, themed signal bars, themed dial pad, with the help of JBoogie created a black swype keyboard, themed the smaler icons like vibrate, alarm etc. (I have also had the circle battery icon and the regular one of course just colored. )

Yes, blurdialer.apk, you need to go into res>drawable-hdpi
You can modify the colors in there, but do not mees with any file ending in .9
then you need to change the permissions before you overwrite the existing app.
should look like this
read write execute
x

I mean the background of the Dial Numbers!
Ahh, As far as I know the only way to do it is to theme the .9 files. Here is how you can do it http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/draw9patch.html
I have not tried, if you do let me know how it works out
Have you done the Theme above?
There the Dial-Numbers have a square around them. How do you do that? Which file did you changed?

It's the dial text field, I guess I have messed with the .9. I know usually those aren't editable, but apparently they are, I just hadn't noticed that is what I was editing. Just made those straight lines rather than the round look

EDIT: nevermind ...allready figured it out
Update 11/7/2011
Reworked the contacts to look a little more black, small changes though. Also reworked the stock clock to be more a little more ICS.
Here is a theme I've been putting together for Serendipity 8.1 over the last few weeks based on ICS from the system dump.
The theme will work with S8, UnNamed and Cog X2 at this point in time.

I've modded the keyboard, most of the usual system apps like mms, contacts, phone etc and modded the stock lockscreen to have the same clock font as ICS... and more
The only problem is that I cannot for the life of me get the notification text color to change to white. So if you can fix then post up the files and I'll add it in.
I don't plan on porting it to other roms or updating it often as pharmacy school has been pretty cumbersome lately.
Usual stuff:
You flash at your own risk, if it breaks your phone it isn't my fault.
I highly recommend you back-up any files so you can revert if you please.
If I missed anything, I can't think of it now...

It should work, there isn't much difference between the two roms but I can't guarantee it.
Looks a lot more complete than what I was working on! One thing I did notice is that the signal icon seems to be a bit larger than the rest of the system icons and a tad bit blurry. The icons I was working with seemed to be a bit smaller to match the height of the other icons. I'll attach the SystemUI.apk I was using in case you wanted to compare those icons
Thanks for theme!
i think there's a new Serendipity version coming any day now, so i'll switch back and try it out then. i don't like the stock green on most of these. i don't get why Google doesn't include color choices.

For messaging I presume? Use apk manager to extract the apk and replace the emoticon images with the ones of your choice. I use the ones from GO SMS, which are much better imo. I can provide a more detailed step by step if you'd like to do it.

Use the instructions from this post. I've also attached a zip of the emoticons I use (not flashable). Give it a try and report back. I'll do it if you have difficulty and we can see where you went wrong.
There are 17 images to replace in drawable-hdpi. There's also one (the "embarassed" emoticon) in the drawable folder; you have to replace this one as well. The images in my zip are appropriately named, so just drag and drop.
Good luck.
Its easy to do and use the ICS emoticons but they have to be replaced in the framework as well as mms.apk.

You need to use root explorer and move the Mms.apk to system/app
Make sure to backup your old one (rename it to something like mms.apk.old)
first and when you move the one with the black smileys it will ask if you want to overwrite.
Then reboot and you should be good to go.
Not successful
Hey, it doesn't just show up. There is now no stock messaging app in app drawer. I have used this technique many times, I changed the permissions & all that stuff, but no success though.
Can you help me out??
I'm posting my apk as well, will you please apply same black emotions & post it back??
i would like to get rid of the contact pic when on the phone and in messaging. i dont have facebook installed so i have zero pics assigned to contacts. so what i get is the standard dude with a big smile. the same with messaging. i would rather not have the contact pic next to every single text.
i am running the latest aokp with nova. and i do not want to put in a full blown theme because i really like the one that came with it. i have seen a few topics that talked about phone apks and such but it seems like that too would take me away from the theme.
what can i do? thx.
Don't know how to do a whole batch but for each individual contact, you can Edit then tab on the pic then select remove picture.
i just tried it. that only works if there is a pic stored for the contact. what i get for options is take pic or choose from gallery.
thanx anyways and thx for the fast response
go through the other ICS ROMs. and find the one you want,(the message apps) theres bound to be one you find just as good bro. you can always extract just the messaging.apk (or converstations.apk) and move it over to SYSTEM/APPS on your phone, with a root explorer on R/W. rename your current messaging app to Messaging1 or something and keep it just in case you want to go back.
as far as i know theres no way of takeing off just the ICS Avatar Guy. hope i helped!

You meant you want to remove the entire empty template?
yes
edit: trying to edit within es file explorer is impossible i guess. i can get into the apk and see all of the xml files... but there is no way to edit the margins and/or image size. ill keep hunting. might just start dloading roms like cgromo90 advised.
i just remember this being a non issue when using touchwiz. trying to get back to that while still keeping the badassedness that is aokp.
What about using a different messaging app out of Google Play? Or try the CM9 nightly.
CM9 has the same messaging apk
The messaging isn't as important as the phone.
The more I think.about it... the more I think I need to take a pic of something simple and just use it for all of my contacts. Or.just download a PNG of the android robot.
I looked in it for Sammy rom, but couldn't find a simple way of removing it.
Might have to dig into smali for that one.
this is ewhat i ended up doing. it got rid of the avatar and is much much better to look at. not perfect, but i guess i cant have my cake and eat it too.

Good work but how do you replace the template?
Do what I do! See this girl?
No clue who she is. But under my girlfriends contact info, she's right there! Have fun with pictures! I've gotten my grandmother to look quite a bit hotter as well searching Google for pics. Good luck!
