I am currently running TSM Res 1.2 with GeeWiz kernel 2.1 and the issue I have been having is the soft keys activating and working while not touching them. The worst is when I am running navigation. The back button and menu button go off by themselves bringing up their menus. Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions to fix this issue? Thanks!
MTD roms tend to do that's particually in lower service areas. It is highly annoying (its a known issue, with no fix yet).
If it does it on stock TW roms then you may have a hardware issue.
It's a pretty common problem on all TW and MTD roms as far as I know. Happens on mine all the time...Never seen a fix for it.
It's a common problem on fascinate/captivate. Doesn't seem to matter which ROM/kernel. Some people claim that it's an issue with moisture getting into the phone and that putting it in a bag with desiccant (like rice) overnight cures it. Your mileage may vary.
We have four fascinates in my family and they all do it. I'm on my third and they've all had the same problem. Two are on stock ED05 and two are on pwgb.
I'd like to troubleshoot it but I'm still working on getting a system up and running for building the kernel.
Has happened to mine since day one. When it starts acting up i turn off the screen and then back on but dont unlock it. Then run my finger across then soft keys a few times back and forth and it usually snaps out of it for a bit.
I have heard somewhere that it may be caused by build up of oils on the keys.....but whatever lol
"I didn't say that...my Fascinate has a tiny troll inside it."

Hey guys, hope you can help with an issue I'm having with my Eris. A while back I dropped it in a parking lot and the screen broke. I upgraded to a Droid, but I got the screen fixed so my wife could have the phone. Everything seems to be working great, except for one problem. When you make a call, the screen goes to sleep as soon as you press the call button. When this happens, none of the buttons wake the screen up or end the call. The phone will wake up for around a second if you cover the light sensor, then uncover it, letting you end the call and then the phone is back to normal. I tried using Shakeawake and Screebl, neither worked.
I tried several different ROMs to see if it was just a weird quirk, but that didn't help. Currently running Jcase's Plain Jane with a mild overclock (710). Is there a way I can prevent the screen from sleeping? Seems easier than trying to get it to wake up. Seems like I remember a ROM that didn't sleep during calls, Espresso maybe?
If anyone can help or point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Gladtm see the Eris community still going strong, things had gotten a little ugly when I left. Sorry if my post ran a little long.

Case?
Do you have a protective case on the phone? I had the same problem with my Eris after putting a case on it. The case interfered with the sensor on the top left of the phone.
There are a couple of things to try that I can think of off of the top of my head. One, under Settings > Call Settings > there should be a box to check to keep the screen on longer during the call. The other is to try pushing the trackball in and at the same time volume down. Surely not the most convenient way, but more so than not being able to not hang up a call or whatever. I honestly had this issue and a couple of other small problems that I ended up getting a refurb. One other thing that you could try before that is doing a nandroid back up and installing a Froyo based rom. I feel that it might be a 2.1 issue for some phones. I'm not sure why, but computers/phones can be finicky sometimes. Hope this helps!
it has to be a hardware issue since it started after the phone was dropped and across several different roms. i would see vzw about getting a refurb replacement. unroot it, put it back to stock and get a new one.
I did the same thing, dropped my eris off of the moving truck, and cracked the screen, I had been looking for something to fix that issue for quite a while, recently I installed Tazz Froyo v.4 and enabled the Settings => Call Settings => Keep Screen Awake function, ever since I have enabled that it hasn't locked up on me yet *knock on wood* Good Luck
Thanks for the replies everybody. I'll try the track ball trick, then installing Froyo tonight and see if that helps. I hadn't even looked at Froyo ROMs since I came back to XDA; when I left there was only one and it really couldn't even be called functional at the time. Glad the Eris is getting Froyo goodness too.
I do agree its probably a hardware issue, especially since when my screen was broken everything still worked fine, just couldn't see the display very well and it was ugly as sin. But looking at when this happens, I think if I can keep the phone from ever telling the screen to sleep, it would probably solve the problem.
If all else fails I'll try to get a refurb. Thanks again, and if anyone thinks of anything else, post it up.

Forgot to mention, the really weird thing is it only does it every other call. Thought that was pretty strange.

So i just upgraded to Tazz V5 and it started freezing again, from my research the problem that's causing the screen to lock up is the proximity sensor, when you cracked your screen it messed that up, my hunch is that in Tazz V4 that the proximity sensor isn't supported, so as a byproduct it doesn't turn the screen off for us Just my observation, let me know what you guys think
well i have an odd problem, one one section of my screen doesn't pick up touches, only the area where the "C" is on the keyboard...its annoying due to thats where the OK buttons are...
i can still navigate sense i can use the track ball..
anyone else have this issue, or something similar?
Try wiping back to factory if stock or reflash the rom if rooted?
I had a weird issue with the touch screen on condemned 18.3 where on the lockscreen trying to drawdown the slider and then draw the pattern, it would freak out and glitch and not follow my finger at all and take several tries to get the pattern correct.
I then wiped and flashed the latest 4.0 GSB and haven't had any issues since.
That's not quite a touch screen failure as yours is, but I thought it would help as an example as something gone wrong and how I was able to remedy it.
i've tried flashing a few different roms, went from cs18.3 to a 2.1 sense rom, back to the latest gsb. it appears its must be a problem with the digitizer...
really sucks, i have to wait to april to upgrade this phone...
might be on craigslist looking for a cheap droid 1...
Ah man, that's unfortunate. Probably wouldn't be worth it to try to replace the screen/digitizer either. Yeah, that's probably your best bet, looking to get another phone. That's how I got my Eris, from craigslist. Great way to go about doing so.
Good luck to ya.
I actually have the same problem and something leads me to believe that an update is causing this. I had it bad a few weeks ago (can't press C, V or X - though I can swipe to the keys sometimes) and then I got a few market updates for Handcent, SuperUser, and something else which then cleared it up for a few days. Then I got more updates and it's back to the failing keyboard!
I really don't know how to pin point it and I haven't done any resetting or testing yet, but I have like gut feeling something is wrong with the software, not the touchscreen since someone else is having this problem.
Mine has been failing little by little. Im now down to the top right corner, bottom left, and bottom middle not responding. It hard to even get the apps drawer to open. It all started with the letter C with me too. Just gets worse.
****, my whole qwerty row doesn't work, neither does the trackball. Upgraded to a SGS2, but I still tinker with the ol' eris.
mine moved, it started working fine for a few days, then just a smaller section to the left of C doesn't work, only really effects when i have an "OK" to press...but track ball still works and typing is so much easier now.
my wife thinks its because i dropped my phone that it started working again
I know this thread is a couple of months old, but...
There's an area on mine at the top right below the notification pull-down that appears to be dead. I'm thinking it's because I've dropped it about 10 times, but nothing looks wrong with the screen otherwise. I've thought about buying a replacement screen for about 15 bucks, but I'll be able to upgrade at the end of March, so I'm really just thinking about holding off (though if the new screen/digitizer worked, it'd make for a good mp3 player with the wifi script).
Digitizer is going bad. Same exact problem happened to mine. I replaced it myself and it works perfect. I found how to videos on youtube and bought a digitizer for about $37 online. Only took a half hour to tear apart and replace. On the difficulty level, I'd give it a 6 or 7.

YMMV.
Someone gave me an Eris that had digitizer problems along the lower left side of the screen (in portrait orientation). I bought a replacement digitizer ($22 iirc), installed it, and it worked perfectly - for about the first 30 minutes. Then, the problem re-appeared in exactly the same location with the new digitizer.
Same behavior for a variety of stock or developer ROMs, so highly doubtful that it was a "software problem". Very very odd - the chip that does the capacitive sensing is on the flex circuit attached to the digitizer, so it gets replaced when you replace the digitizer; I suppose that the signals that come off the mini-connector between the digitizer assembly and the phone's mobo are only power, ground, and I2C signals.
But there you go; taken all those observations together, I'd suspect that I had a problem on the phone's motherboard which was thermally dependent.
Despite my (negative) experience, the odds are still in favor that a digitizer replacement will fix the problem; but there is an outside chance that it won't.
just sayin',

As of yesterday I noticed that my 16gig white wifi running TASK650's 6.0 (now on 7.1)was having odd screen issues where all the colors became distorted (white-->purple) as well as an odd effect when opening the keyboard the keys were all "streaking" a purple trail. I think it has something to do with heat as when I tried sticking the tab into the freezer the issue went away but came back once it became warm again. I have no sleeve or case on the tab but even when i use it on my lap it immediately gets these issues. I did have Pershoot's OC kernel installed but I rarely go past 1.0ghz on SetCPU for more than 25 minutes at a time and usually much less.
I was wondering if anyone else had these problems? If so did you manage to fix it?
Currently running TASK650's 7.1 with no OC but I'm pretty sure this is a hardware issue.
I guess no one else had this issue. But in case anyone else did or if anyone comes across this in the future I am currently testing if the issue persists on unrooted, stock without CWM. I will report back findings as I come across them or the lack of them if not.
I've decided it is most likely broken crystals from the display or rather that they are damaged but not broken. To anyone reading this just send it back for an exchange from your store if you are still inside the return period or Samsung if you are not. Nothing will fix it aside from knowing 100% that it is the LCD and buying a replacement screen and repairing it yourself.
How did you manage to fix the issue? Thanks.
Well it seems I have fallen victim to the trackball issue(s) that cause random screen scrolling. Verizon is sending a replacement, but it's not gonna be here for a few days...long story. I have done a fair amount of searching and of course found the trackball-less recovery. That helped me get back to stock. I also found posts about replacing the trackball which doesn't make any sense if I'm getting a replacement. What I'm left with is a phone I can't really use for a week or so. Some folks have asked about disabling the trackball but I found no real answer. I have to believe there's a driver or some such that can be deleted to actually disable the trackball for the time being. Interestingly enough I found that deleting the rosie scroll folder alleviated the problem for a short while. Any ideas on how to disable the trackball in such a way I can re-enable it to stock right before I ship it back?
I found that sometimes the kernel does this, conaps for example will make your phone scroll to the left during charge, this is a kernel issue and not a phone issue, but yours does seem like a phone issue

As far as I know, scrolling to the left while charging is a not a kernel issue - it will happen with any kernel if it happens. The cause is due to the fact that the trackball is mounted just above the USB connector. I believe that the theory is that if the connector is rocked up and down at some point, it may be enough to alter the trackball sensors and generate a scroll left signal from that point forward when the connector is plugged in. You'd probably see it if the connection was in the phone but not plugged in to a charger or a computer as well.
And, just to note, I have used Conap's kernels for over a year now and my phone never had the scrolling left issue while it was charging (or not charging.)
Back on topic, unfortunately I do not know of any ROM or kernel that disables the trackball driver. Perhaps there is one that I missed, though.
This seems to be more of a software issue than a hardware issue. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the kernel as well but I'm not sure...
Anyway the touchscreen on my rooted Evo 3D with hboot 1.50 is acting up. Sometimes it completely freezes up, and other times when I try and press different parts of the screen, like the the app drawer it just doesn't register. When it freezes up it also affects the soft buttons at the bottom of the phone.
I've tried wiping it several times, and I've also tried this across several different roms, even nandroids, and it is still causing problems.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Try calibrating your screen threw settings to see if that helps.

I had that thought too but it still didn't work. I should also mention that the only way to "fix" the screen temporarily is to hit the power button and then hit it again to wake it back up. It usually does the trick... for a little bit. Also sometimes it just goes berserk and start pressing things without me even touching the screen
Are you running any kind of lockscreen program such as widgetlocker? I had similar problems when doing so, all issues stopped when I uninstalled.

I wish I was so I could fix it but I'm not.
Sorry man, was stabbin in the dark. good luck.
Think it's the Digitizer...
I have the same problem with an Evo3D hboot 1.5 also. It is rooted (ship s-on) I've had the phone for about 4 months, taken good care of it, and thus thought this bug was a software issue as well...
This is what I've tried:
-Factory Data Reset
-Restore Backup partition to original ROM
-Tried different ROMs (sense3.0, olympian xe, sicksense vX)
-Deleted and reformatted SD card
-Leaving SD card unmounted
It seems to be a popular issue, and after searching the CDMA Development forums I have found at least two other threads on the same topic here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398048
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1383707
I don't have insurance, and rooting hboot1.5 is not reversible, for it is permanently recorded on the bootloader, so I'm assuming that my local Sprint representative will be of little help in the matter. From what I can find it would seem that our options are limited to:
A.) Replacing the Digitizer/LCD assembly. Looks like this runs between $70-$120. Here is a solid video on YouTube demonstrating how to remove and replace the Digitizer/LCD:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suS34kNNuLo
B.) Replace the Digitizer only. From what I've gathered this is a risky maneuver which is best left to professionals with the *right* equipment, however is a much cheaper option, Digitizers are around $20.
I left a message with a local cell repair shop asking if they could replace the digitizer without a new LCD, and expect a response tomorrow probably.
Unless anybody has found an alternate cause/solution to this problem, which I would be eternally grateful for, looks like hardware replacement is the only solution.
2 questions one are you guys using screen protectors some of them will cause issues crazy ones from random clicking to unresponsive screen . Also are you using your phone out in the cold weather or really humid out ? A cold screen and hot hands will also wig it out.
I have a Zagg screen protector, which Radioshack carries for numerous phones; however it was installed when I bought the phone, four months ago, therefore I cannot imagine it would suddenly be the problem.
Also, the screen glitches at room temperature, at the most unfortunate times.
I just flashed Timat Kernels, with no results....

I have a zagg on mine I put on no issues for me. How do you carry your phone ? Do you tote it around in your back pocket? Just curious. Some folks have squished there phone sitting on them and messed up the screens. Not sayin you did that . Also folks carry in pocket on hot summer days and sweat gets inside the unit and messes with it.
Also is your phone brand new or a refurbished unit?
The phone is a new unit and I try to be conscious of high-moisture situations, so hopefully that is not to blame. If anything, excessive pressure may have been the cause, from a vacuum-sealed Drycase; but I'm hoping HTC's build quality would withstand such force, which should be minimal compared to being sat on.
Others are experiencing issues with the E3D digitizer, and I'm 90% sure my phone is not misbehaving from physical/moisture damage.
Is there a moisture damage indicator that can confirm/dismiss that theory?
Thanks for the suggestions

Check the battery it has a sticker that will turn a solid color if it seen some water or high humidity. Also I think there is one inside the phone.
I have in the pass seen evo's that were refurbs or new units that were sat on the refurbs glass wasn't glued well and moisture got under the glass and screwed the screen up with random issues. New phones can have the same issues I guess if you really put pressure to it tho there sealed pretty well.
If the Digitizer was going bad from pressure your screen would have faint black lines going down it kinda like graph paper.
I have my phone in a trident kraken case it's been doing good so far.
After hours of research, countless nandroid wipes, and even a few ROMs, I have determined this to be a hardware issue! (at least in my case)
Much thanks to Landon4444 for providing a way to test for a lame digitizer
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20791773&postcount=40Here's how to check if this issue is result of a faulty/worn digitizer:
In the phone dial exactly *#*#3424#*#* to access the HTC diagnostic menu.
Choose line test from available options, screen will turn black.
Draw small test squiggle.
Hold phone by corners with fingers/thumbs (landscape).
Gently, twist phone torsional-ly. *GENTLY!*
In my case, certain slight torque creates a false contact in the upper-middle of my screen. Fortunately twisting slightly in the opposite direction HAS RESOLVED THE PROBLEM FOR NOW. (that was easy) However, I would not expect this tactic to work for long, and am looking into getting the digitizer replaced at the cell shop.
Evo 3d help guys!!
Okay so I just got a raise and an Evo 3D part of my boss's incentive package. (I know I have a great boss!!) but anyway its been less than a month and I haven't purchased any of the screen protector stuff or case. It is now 17 degrees in New York and I'll just drop the phone in my pocket while walking but yesterday at the beginning of a date the parking meter wouldn't take my money and upon trying to use my phone it started dialing it's own numbers and wouldn't let me enter any of the numbers for my code (to unlock). *Mind you my date kept telling me all night "Its a sign that you need the iphone" and I totally like the HTC 3D.I tried calibrating **BY THE WAY IT'S NOT ROOTED YETTT* but the only options your given is the GSensor Calibration. I've noticed that after I enter a warm area the phone starts working fine again. I've never had a smartphone and I think, upon finally getting one, that's it's totally ridiculous that the phone stops working because of the weather. At this point I think I have a faulty phone and am gonna return it to only get another 3D,but has anyone heard of this issue and if so how can I fix it. I mean like what if I had a car accident or an emergency and my "smartphone" starts acting up because of the weather???
Hey guys...I put this post up a few days ago and still haven't received a response. my timing to retunr the phone is running short so I NEED SOMEONE TO HELP PLEASE!!...Is this a normal circumstance that my phone is going through? if not I'll return it and get another one.
Its some grounding issue occuring due to maybe screen touching the main board. Its occurs on my phone very frequently and when normal occurs only if i press hard on screen
my phone also freezes up sometimes and goes crazy and it takes it some time for it to start working....
I ended up replacing the unit.it was faulty. Funny thing is I was trying to tell the guy the problem and when he grabbed it he saw it was broken.the problem worsened to the point the the phone was dialing on its own and going haywire.
