sdcard slot question - Sony Tablet S

I am considering to buy tablet s. One concern is that on the web I found out the article sdcard slot is only for transffering file only. Which makes me think that it is not mountable? or if it is mounted, the files on the sdcard can not be used as if they are on main storage? If that is the issue, can it be circumvented by rooting etc? Any information on this? Thanks,

Rooting would help with mounting. Stock music and video players don't see the sd card but many third party ones see and play from it ok. I have not tried installing games to sd card yet and have not read anything about it here. By the way cards above 32gb work when formatted properly acording to some posts here. Hope it helps

The stock apps the tablet comes with unfortunately do not read directly from the sd card. However, there are tons of apps in the market that will read your music, videos, photos, whatever you want from the sd card. I have tested and used MX Video Player, Quick Pic, and my emulators gameboid and n64oid

Dunno why some people say the tablet s doesnt read/play from the sd card....i have a 16gb card in mine n it plays photos, videos, n music just fine using the file transfer app already on the tablet...this has essentially made my 32gb tablet a 48gb tablet n im loving it...

I think you are missing the point. The file transfer app copies the files from your sd card to the internal memory. The stock apps cannot directly play movies /music from sd card

To clear some misunderstandings here:
Sony Tablet S cannot play SD contents using the menus in default application (for example: when you will tun video player you cannot browse and play anything placed on SD card).
But if you will use bundled file explorer (or any other file explorer like ghost commander) you CAN play SD contents using stock apps - and it works fine.
So the real annoyance (untill root and mount) is the fact that you cannot _browse_ to media files directly from within bundled applications.
That's all - you don't need to transfer file to internal memory to play it, it can stay on the card.

[Q] About playing music from SD card using default music player

Someone said the default music player can't play music from SD card directly. Is that true? I am considering which model (32GB or 16GB) should I buy.

I just tested this. You can play pretty much anything off of the ext sd card that your heart desires, without transferring anything. What I do is use 'es file explorer'. Open that up, and change your default "home" directory to "/" (without quotes) via the settings. This is the root directory of the system. There will be a folder called 'sdcard2'. Which is your external sd. Now you can browse for any file, and play any file you want. Of course, this folder will not be accessible if you just open the music/video player; unless you use the file transfer app. But just use a file explorer. Its the same thing!

But using a file explorer will not let you play all the songs at once. You can only play each song one by one...

This is true. So, you'd have to use the file transfer app for that. We need root!!! And all of these tedious issues would go away. I need to start running some adb commands. Lol!

Thanks both of you. Is that a android 3.X problem? or the app just search the specific music folder on internal storage, so it can play music from other directory.
What happens if you have an .m3u playlist file together with your mp3 list in the card, and open that one with an m3u app, for example?

Actually its a Sony issue. All of the other tablets that I've had (gtab, xoom, transformer) did not suffer from this issue. I believe that Sony did this to prevent users from "expanding" their storage. Its lame, but after root it would be an easy fix!
EDIT: Im pretty sure that third-party apps don't suffer from locating the ext sd card via their interfaces. I think its just the built-in Sony apps? Definitely not an android 3.x issue.

Hi,
Just tried this on my sony tablet, m3u opening is tricky but there's another, simpler way:
Install Astro Player Nova, for example
Then navigate to /mnt/sdcard2 and just select all mp3 files and let 'em rip!

Ok, guys you can play music or videos from the SD card but using a third party app like for music I use PowerAmp and for video Video MX and it works flawlessly.
still no good news about playing music SD card using the default music player??
Even more simple
With the Poweramp player you can select in the settings wich folders you want to be in your library included the one from your ext sd card. So you can play every album you have on it, shuffle it, make playlists etc...

[Q] Can apps access sd card?

Thanks so is that the same for any app? e.g. read ebooks / comics or play mp3s all off the sd card?
The reviews got me worried there but if they just mean you cant install to sd then there is no problem as who is going to need more than 4gb for that.
You can store data on the external sd card and some apps will allow you to choose where it looks for data (vidoes, mp3s, etc.) but you can't install/access apps from the external sdcard. Hopefully ICS will address that issue, but Sony will probably hijack it once again.

[Q] Is it possible to modify google music?

I don't know if anybody else has any issues with google music not recognizing music stored on their sd card, if their phone already has internal storage, but I have noticed on my HTC Amaze that google music will only recognize the music on the internal storage and not all of the songs I had on my micro sd. Is it possible to modify google music to read or find music from more than one location on your phone?
PS I have more music than what would fit on the the phones storage so moving songs from micro SD to the phones internal storage would not be an option.
Delete The google music app and then reinstall it from some other source ! Maybe there's some problem in the APK !

I talked to another amaze owner that had the same problem. The issue is that google music will only recognize music files that are saved directly on the root of the SD card. As soon as the files are moved into a folder within the SD card it stops recognizing that the music is there anymore.

what phone do you have? does it have internal storage and a sd card slot? I have it on my nexus one and it has no problem recognizing music on the phone at all. I think something about having more than one storage place makes google music get all weird.

TF201 won't read music from external SD card

I just got the Transformer Prime and popped in my class 4 32 gb micro SD card that I used in my Acer A500. I've got a lot of music and some movies on the card. I can play the movies no problem if I navigate to them with a file manager. When I click a song, Google Music opens but never plays any music or displays any info.I downloaded Poweramp but Im unable top navigate to external storage and it doesn't auto detect it. I copied a folder to the music folder on the internal sd card and both apps play the songs fine.
Is there a way to enable the SD card with these apps? I've also noticed that pics from external SD are not displayed in the gallery but they are in file manager. I have not yet rooted or unlocked and Im running the latest OTA.

Use Poweramp. You need to turn on sdcard detection manually...poke thru the settings. Default music apps suck.

Movie app not loading the videos on my SD card

I've transferred some video files to the SD card on the Z Ultra (using Sony Bridge for Mac) but the Z Ultra's Movie app does not recognize these files at all. I've tried to clear the data of Media Storage (in Apps -> All) and restart the phone to force a rescan of the media files but that doesn't seem to be able to resolve the problem. Also, strangely the phone DOES recognize video files stored in the Internal Phone Storage. It also DOES recognize music files stored on my SD card - so the only problem is with video files. Appreciate if you have a fix to this problem!

Thanks for your reply. I figured out a fix already. Just create a new folder called "Video 2" or something. Then, use the phone's File Commander app, move all those videos in the existing folder to the new "Video 2" folder. Then those videos will load in the Movies app.
