Back to stock for warranty? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Search didn't bring up anything for the atrix, I currently have the honeycomb themed build and my USB port is messed up so I need to take my phone in for the warranty. I was just curious how to flash it back to stock so I don't get denied. It's not a software issue, the USB connector got pushed back into the phone somehow so now my charger doesn't reach I just don't want them to deny me my warranty for the hardware, based off the fact I changed the software lol thanks all

First off, wrong section.
Second, if you can't connect to USB then you can't flash back to stock. I flashed a gingerbread SBF before I sent mine in and everything was fine.
Third, checkout ifixit.com for the Atrix teardown. You might be able to push the USB connector back into place yourself.

So should i flash pudding or is it safe to flash just the stock GB sbf?

If you have a spare usb cable just break the plastic shell off the end you have to plug into the phone and you will be left with the metal end and some wiring. Be gentle as the solder isn't that strong and pulls apart easily; but use like a small pair of needle nose to push that end into the pushed in usb port. ( make sure your usb cable isn't given power while inserting just to avoid a short)
If you didn't damage the actual ports connection to the phone, the pushed in port should be overcome by this simple mod to the usb cable. I have done it before on other devices.

Won't stop them billing you if they deem it not covered by warranty. My ex sent in a phone to AT&T after she received a replacement, and was then promptly sent a bill for a new phone when they inspected it and said it wasn't covered by warranty. If they do that, it's tied to your phone bill, so if you don't pay they cut off your service. Keep your fingers crossed. I doubt you will have any issues though unless it looks like you tried to force the wrong connector in.

[Q] Replace USB port and / or Extreme cleaning suggestions

Hey all --
I'm experiencing symptoms related to a dirty / corroded USB port as described below. This is a common issue and widely reported:
* Phone always thinks its charging and USB connected.
* When powered off it loops through a charging screen then back to blank.
* Cannot power on unless actively plugged in and charging.
and in the following threads :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16834257#post16834257

http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...otification-stays-after-usb-disconnected.html
I've tried all the cleaning techniques:
* Alcohol with coffee filters and toothpicks
* Alcohol with a micro-usb connector
* Small wire to rub / scrape the usb port
No dice.
I'm wondering if anyone has further cleaning ideas, or --
Is it possible to replace the USB port?
Otherwise, I think this phone is done...
Thanks!
I don't figure itd be too hard to replace the port... well idk, sorry for your troubles

I both know how to solder and would be interested in 3rd party or official repair services.
Thanks for any leads, links, ideas, or pointers!!
I've been thinking about looking into this. I am IPC-A610 and J-Standard solder certified and work on Class III devices. I have a full Metcal hand rework machine at home, as well as at work.
If I could get some pics of the phone apart, specifically of the USB port leads, I could tell you if I could do it or not.

Just stopped back by to see if other folks are finding / solving this same issue.
I found another longish thread about replacing the USB port, but it doesn't seem to have ended in finding the part or performing the surgery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250774
I continue to experience all the issues described in the original post, which are often fixed by cleaning the port. Unfortunately, none of the cleaning attempts have been successful.
Anyone have a brick to sell me that I can pull the USB port off? Any other ideas for sourcing a USB port for the Vibrant? Has anyone done this soldering job?
Thanks!
globaldirectparts.com
Globaldirectparts.com has the usb port.
http://www.globaldirectparts.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=vibrant
this is the part:
http://www.globaldirectparts.com/Samsung-T959-Charging-Port-p/smsng6085880.htm
Their website says they don't sell to end users though. I would contact them and see if you can still purchase it. In this economy people want to make money.
wow, awesome. Thanks!
Part number SMSNG6085880
Someone must be reselling these somewhere, but nothing turns up on google yet. Seems like someone on xda must have a reseller account if only to resell to the board members! I'm expect they cost almost nothing and could be turned around at $5-10+ slowly via Amazon or Ebay.
pretty sure you can find the part on ebay.
I just got my Vibrant the other day and ran across this issue. Seems for me that it only happens when USB debug is checked and the phone still thinks it is plugged in.
What I have found is that if you just plug into charger, it stabilizes and cools down the USB "loop". Will keep trying to duplicate to find the fix. Give me some time and I'll figure it out. Better to find a fix then replace some hardware for $.
I have a GT-i9000 and I am keen to either perform surgery or clean so looking forward to your response.

Well my problem is a little different. I went to plug my phone in last night and it did not charge. I have tried a different cable, tried to plug it into my computer nothing doesn't recognize or anything. I even replaced the battery. I tried all the easy fixes but no luck. I know I can get a dock charger but without the usb I am afraid I will not be able to odin back to stock if need be. Will be interested in when someone replaces the usb port on how hard it is to do.

[Q] Completely destroyed charging port - where do I get replacement?

So I've managed to completely ruin the micro usb/charging port on the bottom of the phone. The phone will still charge, but my system will not recognize the phone at all. If I wiggle the cable I see the MTP Initialization on the phone, but after looking inside the port with a flashlight, there are tons of bent & broken pins on the port itself.
I'd love to completely replace the charging port on the phone. Does anyone know if the I900 parts are compatible with the SGH-I77? I have the ATT version and I can't find *any* spare parts online for it, only for the international version. I can score the charging port online for as little as $5, and $15 for a full replacement of the pcb+everything else.
I'm more than capable of opening the phone and replacing a PCB, but does anyone know if the I900 parts are compatible with the ATT version *at all*?
Any other suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. I'm eligible for an upgrade in February so I'll get a new phone until then, but I'd really prefer to hook it up straight to my PC to access the SD card rather than popping it out each time I need something.
Thanks!

It's a standard microUSB receptacle. You can solder a replacement if you wish to do so. But, the better alternative is to take it and get it replaced on warranty. The port failing is really common on the newer phones, so you should have no trouble getting an exchange. I did this recently for my wife's cappy..

A quick search revealed this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18608050&postcount=6
I'd try a jig first, doubt it'd need to be in there too long to register and remove the counter, but if that doesn't work I'd give the above a shot.

Just got mine back from Samsung. Mine is also rooted with the triangle and a counter of 2. They mistakenly thought it was intermittently powering down so they did a software update. Came back and still rooted. I knew the problem would not be fixed since they didn't take care of the loose or broken microusb port, so it is with them now. No issues with warranty or anything since it is a physical malfunction.
I made sure they put in the notes that it was a physical malfunction. Same issue. The phone was still recognized, but I had to hold the micro usb port angled up for the phone to charge. I think I'll put something like Bodyguardz on the back of the phone and get the samsung dock so the microusb isn't moving around in the port. Either way, no problems with warranties from Samsung.
U could always use mobile Odin and flash back to stock
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
As long as you can still get the USB to "somewhat" register a plug you can build a jig for literally 2 dollars. As long as you have a radio shack somewhere around you your good. Zedomax has a tutorial on building them on youtube, just search, how to: USB Jig. You turn the phone off, plug the jig in, and bam!! your in download mode and it reads custom binaries: 0. Then, when you reboot the phone, the yellow triangle is gone, it works awesome, and i use mine now every time I have to get into D/L mode cause its a lot faster. The building process literally took me 10 minutes, and you only plug it in for about 3 seconds before your finished. Its awesome for situations like this, hope it works out for you bud.
Im scared now, I have never ever ever had / or damaged a usb port of any kind, so how the heck did yours get damaged? I dont want to go through the reverting to stock problem to ship out cause of warranty. How many people have had this problem? If it is just a handful then Ill be less inclined to worry.
Hi. What did you do finally? I think my microusb port is broken and warranty is over. Thanks

when you say that your charging outlet feels loose, do you mean the area that you plug your charging cord into on your phone?
You might need to replace the micro USB port on your phone. I sent my phone to MobileTechVideos and they replaced it for me. It'll cost about $35 for the service though.
Like when I plug my phone in to charge, it kinda wiggles around like it shouldn't. It should just plug in and be tight. Not sure how this happened. Is there anything else that can be done other than sending it in? I don't have another T-Mobile phone to use in the mean time

No. I doubt that the installation of a virtual rom would cause the damage of a physical charger jack. However, that day, did you violently yank the charger cable out of the device? Or anything to that sort?

Nope, ive always been really careful with this phone. i think its been getting loose the past 6 months or so. I realllly dont want to get a new phone. I really like my Vibrant
I just want to know that if I send it somewhere that they can actually fix it. I can connect and mount if I need to, but its just odd that I have to hold it a certain way for it to start charging. When i put it down it stops. Tried 3 different chargers, all from tmobile store.
I actually just flashed ICS passion and had the same exact issue. I never thought it could be due to the flash and assumed it was just hardware.
For me, what fixed (or helps) this issue -
Plug the cord in so its sticking in the charging slot as best as possible, than flip the phone on its face while the cord dangles off of a table or whatever you charge it on. (this puts pressure against the cord/phone slot in the reverse direction, and at least for me, would charge the phone)
Hope that made sense and helped!

Rezound Warranty question/Back to original

I have recently been having issues charging my phone, I have to wiggle it in order for the phone to charge and its very annoying. I fear the problem will get so bad in the future that the phone won't charge at all. Also when I connect it to my PC I have to carefully maneuver the cable in a certain way so my PC can detect it show the SD and ExtSD in MY PC.
Should I take it back and get it replaced or have others here had the same issue here and what would you recommend?
I currently have a unlocked bootloader (Hboot is JB) and and S-off.
If I do want to take it back. Can I? and where do I even begin to start getting everything back to stock?
Please help I am willing to donate to anyone that can help me with step by step directions to getting this completed.

Yikes so S-off -->S-On and then back to S-off and that will lock the bootloader again then S-On again
You guys think Verizon will replace it for that reason or it's not even worth to go back to stock everything?
Return it
Try to contact VZN tech support and tell your story.
They're the best bet to secure a replacement Rezound.
If they say Yes, and are sending you a new one, then
do that recipe above and return to 100% stock, Locked.
That way, your time is paid back by insuring no surprise charge
after the return for unlocking or s-0ffing old one.

Thanks wish me luck.
I just had to do the same today for myself. It took me less than an hour to install a fresh RUU, S-On and then S-Off again to get my boot loader back to Locked. Remember they will not say anything for the unit being S-Off but they can refuse warranty replacement for the phone being Unlocked.
Is it the cable that is bad, or the usb connection? If the usb connection is bad then I would definitely contact verizon about a replacement, just tell them your phone won't charge or connect to the pc and you've tried multiple cables.
I send my phones back all the time for loose USB connections like yours.
I'm in my 3 rezound and wife is on 2nd. I have sent them all in unlocked, soff , rooted, running a Rom.
If you TELL the rep on the phone that you did all that they MIGHT not send u a replacement. But why tell them, just talk about the charging problem , tell them u have used multiple cables and chargers, tell them your friend has a rezound and you used his cable and charger that work fine on his phone but won't work with yours.
You will have a replacement tomorrow
All this business about putting everything back to stock is nonsense.
Vzw released a statement saying that they only look for 3 things when accepting a returned unit.
1. Is the shipping package damaged?
2. Does the phone have physical damage. (broken screen, cracked case ..etc. )
3. Does the phone power on?
That's it.. that's all.. nothing else. It is up to the person on the phone to verifiy everything else. If they authorize a replacement, and your phone passes the 3 physical inspections a above, your fine.
Nobody at the warehouse is powering on your phone and looking for root and other garbage.. that's just silly, and Vzw has said as much.
Good luck.

It's the little port on the side of the phone that either lost proper contact with some of the leads inside the board and that's why I have to wiggle it up and down or just a hardware failure not sure how this happen but calling Verizon today and I am going to say it doesn't charge.

Bad usb cord
I go through USB cables very fast. I have had 4 cords wear out on me. I get them form monoprice.com and they are inexpensive. The allow for movement at the connection.
However, if you are using the stock USB cable then this may cause damage to your phone as it has a tighter fit and movement at the connection is less likely as is more likely to transfer any movement into the plug mount in the phone. The plug is not the same as a standard usb plug which has a looser fit and always for movement stress to occur at the connection instead of inside your phone.
After verifying that a new cord will not work and getting your replacement, I recommend not using the stock USB cord on a regular basis. I only use it for connecting to my PC for Modding the phone, where I want a 100% secure connection. I use the standard USB cable for sync'ing to my PC and all other non PC related connections.
From monoprice, I bought a 15ft cord to use with my HDMI Converter. Works great.

[Q] Galaxy S3 (i9300) won't charge

So I got this strange problem where my phone stopped charging. I tried diffrent cables, adapters, charging it while being off, charging it via the computer and even tried to adjust the little lip in the micro usb port. Is the charging board dead? If it is, will a replacement be expensive?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Free mobile app
Well dude I think your assumption is right.
It might be the charging circuit only which may be dead.
Because as you told that you have tried diffrent cabels and chargers but still your charging is not working which means that the usb micro port through which we charge and connect our phone to computer is damaged and should be replaced .
There are many possible reason of damaging usb port like you may have drop your phone or by using faulty cabels and chargers or if u have rooted your phone then there is possibility of changing the voltage of current to more than 1000 Mhz etc etc.
You should try to flashed a complete stock rom by downloading from sammobile or directly using kies to update or re-flash your phone
you can try that may it may help you.

You can try micro usb port which is available on ebay but it would be extremely very dangerous until and unless you know what you are doing.
My suggestion is to give your phone to the samsung care and tell then to repair it.
If your phone is in warranty then they will do it for free. You just need to provide them a copy of bill at the time you purchased s3.
