I've never flashed a CDMA device to a different carrier, so I can only share what I've read on here. I'm sure if I'm missing any details or mistake a piece of information, somebody with more experience or knowledge will post up!
As far as I've read, don't need root access to flash to a different carrier. The carrier information is mostly stored in the radio. Some settings, such as MMS settings are stored in the ROM and changing these settings might require root access.
In order to change the carrier information in the Radio, I think you'll need to use CDMA Workshop as that seems to be the most common software platform for qualcomm CDMA radio communication.
Also, a MetroPCS store might be able to assist with flashing the device over and they should have the correct software/tools.
I've seen quite a few threads pop up around here asking this same question. Here are a few threads which came up in a search I performed on google.com using the terms, xda evo 3d q&a metropcs:

Ignore the pointless banter and bashing but some good info plus directions further down the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163230

Ok so I have seen that when you download a Rom, sometimes they ask that you flash the latest radio and or kernel. So how do you find out what the right one is for the Rom you are tryin to flash. And on top of that I have no idea what a radio image or a kernel is or does so if any one knows a good link to school me on that I'm sure that would help. Thanks

For radios, USUALLY the latest released version is the best. There are some situations where an older version may actually work better for your carrier (telco). You can find a list for GSM HTC Hero radios here: http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?307-Gsm-Hero-Radio-Roms-Download-Links It is VERY, VERY important to flash the correct radio for your device, otherwise you will probably brick it.
For kernels, the ROM dev usually (99.9% of the time) includes the kernel so you don't have to worry about it. Some users though want different performance out of their devices and MAY flash another kernel.
This sticky provides good advice http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797740. It is from the XDA GSM Hero dev section.
Is a hero the same as a g2? I have a t-mobile us g2. So would hero radios work for it? And would I flash the radio or Rom first?

Oh and if you do flash the wrong radio can you not fix it be recovering a backup

I might be wrong but I think your phone is like the HTC Desire Z. If it is, this is the wrong section of XDA for you.

Don't think so. Just try not to flash the wrong one.

ok, seriously - what he said is correct, but I too am uncertain if this is the correct place for you.
I know the xda title is HTC G2/GSM hero. but I think the GSM hero and G2 actually use different radios? It certainly could be true anyway and I would not take a chance by flashing a G2 radio or any other radio without confirming with a real bonified G2 user.
edit: we're 99% hero users here.

The G2 Touch (this section of XDA) was/is offered by T-Mobile UK. Also known as the GSM HTC Hero - offered by numerous other carriers.
To complicate things further, there is also a CDMA HTC Hero. Different animal altogether.
Just be careful!
Flashed the radio.... nothing bad happens... but I just flashed the minui rom..... bad ARE!

so my friend just got an evo 3d. I currently have the shift.
So ill be new to the 3d forums and asking a lot of questions!
My first question, what's cdma and gsm? I noticed you guys had two different development forums for the 3d.
And anything else a beginner should know about this phone?
Evo SHIFT
Cdma: Sprint and Verizon, gsm: tmobile and at&t, basically different cellular networks. Also as far as things to know, so far only way to unlock after latest HTC update is the official HTC method, which still leaves u with s-on. If the phone isn't updated yet, don't update it, use revolutionary to get s-off. I think that's the gist of important things? Haha , anything else I can help with I'd love to try so feel free to ask, but Im actually new to xda myself!

CDMA and GSM are different wireless technologies. To make it easy Verizon and Sprint are CDMA carriers and AT&t and TMobile are GSM.
The only thing someone who had no knowledge of the differences would notice is that usually (99% of the time) only GSM phones have sim card slots.
So, since you have the shift I am assuming that your friend has the evo3d on sprint. That means he (or she) would need to look at the CDMA development page for info and roms.
gsm is Global System for Mobile Communications cdma is Code division multiple access just in case u wanted to know.in my opinion cdma is better i have used both and find it to work better.if u decided to get a evo 3d and need help rooting and roming just pm me i will be more than happy to help
edit: i wouldn't worry to much about being a beginner there is always someone who will help its a great phone and very user friendly rooting might be a little different then u may have done in the past but not hard to do keep in mind if you get the phone soon do not except the ota when u first get the phone as of right now there is no way to root 2.3.4 but like i said you can pm me anytime and i will be more than happy to help
Yeah evo3d is on sprint.
Now I understand that its cdma.
I'm only a beginner to the 3d cause I'm not familiar with the model. I've rooted my shift plus my cousins evo. So I'm somewhat familiar with the evo family.
Hboot on the 3d is 1.3
I gotta root it with revolutionary. Is this a one click method or do I have to setup sdk and adb commands?
After I root, what's the best recovery for this phone? Is cwm compatible?
Thanks everyone!
Its much appreciated. I love learning about new things.
Also, absurd is the nick name for sense, right?
Evo SHIFT
For revolutionary I'm pretty sure you need adb, but there's great instructional vids and posts on xda guiding you through. Also, you can use cwm, but twrp (team win recovery project) is another good option.

you dont need adb with the revolutionary root/s-off also it is alot easier to stick with that process all the way through with recovery it is basically a one click with a little pre setup. if you need any help with anything just pm me

Hi
And what about not branded EVO? How can I recognized which version I have?
I'm pretty sure, that I have GSM one (cause I bought it in Europe), but I'll be 101% sure before I'll flash new Rom .
Thx for help

I had my EVO 4G rooted and flashed ROM's. I just picked up the LTEvo. I know that it can be rooted very easily.
I just learned that EVO 4G ROM's do not work on LTE. Correct?
Can anyone recommend a good first ROM for the LTE that doesn't take away anything from the phone? Last several ROM's I've used always had some kind of bug where the voicemail app didn't work or MMS didn't work, etc...
I would like the hotspot feature though. Do I have to flash a ROM to take advantage of that or can I just root?
Thanks for the help is advance

You JUST LEARNED that Evo 4g ROMs won't work on the LTE? I'd slow down a bit and read a lot more. A ROM for one phone will not work on another unless specifically ported for partition sizes and HW and god knows what else.
If you look in the dev section there's a tut for modifying build.prop to get hotspot working.

First of all, searching for the info you want will probably help you out. Second, research as much as possible so you don't mess up. And third, go to htcdev.com and follow directions. There is so much info in this forum to help you, and then if/when you're stuck, ask for help.
Down metal, don't make me grab the hose!
Use dans rooter in the original dev section, should work fine (rewag_lienad) then you'll need to install flashimageGUI.
Then read om4s guide in his SIG

Hello ladies and gentlemen. First and foremost I would like to say that XDA is a wonderful community of which I am very pleased to finally be taking a part of. Since my very first Samsung Transform that I had back in 2010, to my Current HTC Ego 4g LTE I have used XDA and the resources that are provided here for all of my Android related questions. For that I want to thank XDA for having such a wonderful community and hope that things continue to devolp fruitfully for everyone.
Now onto the subject of my first post, of which I hope is appropriate in every manner.
I am running Cyanogenmod v 10.0 on my HTC Evo 4g LTE, TWRP recovery, S-on, Hboot v unknown currently.
Upon installing Cyanogenmod v 10.0 after much struggle I noticed that the 4g does not work. I checked my PRL and noticed that I am running 25015. So I began trying to find a method to update my PRL in hopes that this would allow the 4g to begin working. I have tried many different ways that I have found throughout XDA and Cyanogenmod forums to no avail. No dial codes work. Period. Please do not suggest a dial code because I have already gone through and tried every prominent variation. The next thing I began trying was connectingy phone to the computer and using the CDMA editor program(I cannot remember the name currently). The problem I ran into with this was entering DIAG mode. Again the dial code does not work due to the non Sense ROM. I have tried many variations of the Echo > 1 command but I cannot locate a DIAG file that this command would apply to. I have found a qct_ file but it is corrupt.
If anyone has found a method to put the phone into DIAG mode, or update the PRL using a different method that I have not mentioned your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
I will update this post with more specific information on what I have tried when I have access to a desktop terminal.
You could make a backup, revert back to a sense Rom, update the PRL, then restore the backup.

I would like to figure out how to do so without flashing a new sense ROM. Until I get S-off I have to flash the boot.IMG if I understand this correctly. I had to do that when I flashed Cyanogenmod the first time.

Even so, I think it would be good to find a direct method to update the PRL and Profile in Cyanogenmod as opposed to simply working around it. That's no fun. I have beem trying to hunt down the file to change but to little success.

My PRL is up to date? I thought sprints newest PRL was like 60xxx.
What do I look for in my phone info for my firmware version? If it is not up to date would that fix my 4g LTE issue on cyanogenmod?
You might need to call sprint and have them reprovision your phone, for that you probably need to be on a sense rom, flash meanbean which has a s-on installer then restore your cm nandroid... Good luck! I don't think there's other way to do what you need in aosp... :banghead:
