ok, 1st off i'm used to my Evo4G so i know very little about the Photon...yet. So my question is, right now as it stands, if i get the Photon I can root it & run all the root apps & functions & still have 4G, but from the bits i read, if I unlocked the bootloader as well, Ill lose 4G, can sumone clear this up for me?

You are correct. But you can unlock the bootloader and then lock it back up. So its like this:
Root and Unlock Bootloader
Install CWM
Install one of the only two ROMS we currently have
re-lock bootloader
Install bootstrap recovery
install updates to whichever ROM you want through bootstrap
Enjoy custom ROM with locked bootloader and 4g love
It is really just an extra step until we get the kernel source code. This is an absolute great phone and we have great people in this forum to help you out. There are quite a few guides on how to do all of this, if you want to PM me I can help you one on one get it done if need be. Other than that, hope to see you around these parts

I don't know, I find it pretty easy to do, and I'm not very good at adb stuff. I believe there is a one click root tool also and it only takes like 3 minutes to unlock the bootloader.
So I think the whole thing is pretty easy myself. Up to you really.

One thing I want to ask.
This is what is keeping me from even rooting. how do I unroot? In case I return this phone?

I had an ogEvo as well and new to the whole bootstrap but most of this stuff just sounds complex. Really isn't a huge deal once you get your feet wet. I had the same reservations when getting the ogEVO but over time ended up doing about everything to it. Never borked it once.

Yea, it really isn't that bad, a bootstrap is more harmless than a real recovery actually. Its just like installing an app from the market really.
And on the borking the android phones. I think this is extremely hard to do because I had an OgEvo and I don't think I could have bricked that if I tried. I think Android is some of the most user friendliest software out there in my opinion. I even thought I bricked my Photon the other day, but I didn't, you always just find out it's user error 99% of the time!
At least for me it is. lol
As for the root/unlock process with the photon, I think it is very easy once you run through it a couple times. I may make a video so people aren't so scared to try it out.
-DJ
Ok I have had my photon for a few months now and I am coming from a evo and a hero before that. Those phones needed to be rooted to get the best out of them. I was looking around the development section and while I know there isn't a lot of roms, I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on rooting. I really have no need for wireless tether, and while I would like to remove some of the bloat, I just don't know if its worth it on this phone.
Just throwing it out there to get some input from other photon users.
Thanks guys
For me, it was worth it just to run an adblocker. That's all I use it for.
It's a very fast and easy process.
The photon runs great as it is, but like willysp said just the ability to use adfree makes it worth it.. and of course if you like modifying little things here and there to make the device more yours
And to me was actually the easiest device I have rooted thanks to the one click root script.
There's a couple of other ways to root it but that was the first I found.
I came from Hero and EVO as well. This phone is great as it is. No need to do anything else. I have to said beside Nokia, Motorola is the best phone in term of reception.
Which method did you use? Did you flash a rom after rooting or did you just keep it stock and just use ad blocker?

You can use the one click method which takes 5 minutes.
One good reason to root is to use SetCPU, which easily doubles your battery life by letting the CPU slow down when not in use.
So what is the process? Root and then flash a custom recovery? I just need a step by step of what to do.completely forgot about setcpu. But don't you have to have a custom kernel in order to use setcpu?

That's incorrect.
SetCPU requires more than root. Needs a custom kernel, which requires unlocking. And we don't have a fully functioning unlocker.

Slowing down your CPU (underclocking) doesn't save any battery life, undervolting however does.
And yes a custom kernel is required to undervolt and to flash one we need to unlock the bootloader.

Isn't the bootloader unlocked, but 4G is borked?
The bootloader is perfectly fine, the 4g issue is because sprints security keys for wimax look at the bootloader state. Not even the official test phones have 4g.

Yeah, I probably didn't ask the question the best way. I just don't want to screw myself if I update it and then have to delay getting a root method. I think if I root it and then perform and OTA update, I'll lose root, which kinda forces me to use ROMs.
Arghhh... I know stuff, but not to the extent I should to run off in the corner by myself with this thing.

I read that earlier but someone said it would void the warranty. HTCDEV unlock is new news to me as well.
I need to do some reading on the forums. I respectfully don't expect people to spoon feed it to me. I know that's rude. I just thought a best practices general outline would be helpful. I can search to find out how to do any of the suggestions.

VirtualBox: For the few instances when you absolutely must have Windows to run a specific program. Much better than Parallels, imho. It runs flawlessly on my Mac, but in all honestly, I rarely have the need to boot Windows.

You're welcome. I had to ditch Parallels 5 when I upgraded to Lion because Nova Software refused to support it on 10.7. I did look into getting Fusion but I opted for Virtual Box since it was open source. Plus, like I said, I rarely have the need to boot Windows, so why pay for something I'll hardly use? I think the only time I've had to boot Windows is when I tried to theme a few apps for my phone. I've yet to find a decent Mac equivalent to zip7.

It *should* be possible. The bootloader just locks the boot partition for one. Just not the system partition which is where ROM root access is. I'd have to go over it with a fine tooth comb to figure it out, just don't have the resources (or time) yet.
But again, I've been getting literally thrown around a gym and choked for the past week, so my brain isn't at a 100%. Anyone, feel free to chime in if I'm wrong.

As of now, no one has a method of rooting the phone without unlocking the bootloader through HTCDev.com. However, HTC no longer supports unlocking the bootloader on this phone, so everyone is SOL unless you unlocked before they dropped the support. We will have to wait until someone finds an exploit to add root functionality.

Sorry for the confusing reply....I have not done anything to the phone yet and it is not bricked.
I do not know how to get to boot loader etc. I used to have HTC EVO, back then I used to root I think using some S-Off tool and using some command line method.
Now I have forgotten everything as after EVO switched to Samsung and in samsung I used to root with Odin.
So waiting for someone to provide detailed step by step direction to root for Sprint MAX.
Thank you so much for offering to help though.

No I still have not rooted...I guess I will wait till we get dedicated Sprint-HOM section...In the past I have seen people bricking their phone because they used instruction for ROMs and Radios for GSM version. Also in my experience generally it takes 3-4 months after the release of the phone to get proper root guide.
