Best Practices for our new EVO LTEs. - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I have my two new EVO LTEs in hand. From an experienced user, what should we do?
I don't want to mess with ROMs for a while but I want to root my phones to use TitaniumBackup, remove any bloatware, and enable WiFi hotspot.

is there root yet?

Sounds like you already know what you want to do. Just wait for a root exploit.

Yeah, I probably didn't ask the question the best way. I just don't want to screw myself if I update it and then have to delay getting a root method. I think if I root it and then perform and OTA update, I'll lose root, which kinda forces me to use ROMs.
Arghhh... I know stuff, but not to the extent I should to run off in the corner by myself with this thing.

OR you could just HTCDEV unlock, install Superuser, and have yourself a Gay Ol' Time!

I read that earlier but someone said it would void the warranty. HTCDEV unlock is new news to me as well.
I need to do some reading on the forums. I respectfully don't expect people to spoon feed it to me. I know that's rude. I just thought a best practices general outline would be helpful. I can search to find out how to do any of the suggestions.

Revolutionary has stopped. The last update they made to the tool was about 2 months ago. Look at their site, then go to the bottom of the wiki page and take a look.
No update in 2 months= whatever you want to think.
They won't be finding a patch for the evo3d 1.5 hboot because they aren't looking.

I've talked to them as well, if anyone asks about any news on 1.5 hboot, they simply say no, then kick you out of irc. Why would they have any desire to put any effort into looking when htc released the unlock method? It's not going to happen, maybe next summer.

We individually unlock it. It's super easy. The instructions gives you screen shots of what to do. I just unlocked mine. Took about 5-10 minutes. I'm sure it will be available tomorrow but I didn't waste any time.
Tough to tell whether HTC did this on purpose or not. They very well might pull it later after they realize it/Verizon *****es them out.
I would at least go get the unlock token now, even if you don't want to use it right now.

I'll just wait for the devs to set it up where I don't have to give my phone info to vzw and htc. Might need my warranty some day.

This htcdev.com unlock will allow you to flash custom ROMs, kernels, and recoveries. Sadly radios, hboot/bootloader, and I believe splash screens are a no go. Also, some things must be flashed via fastboot as opposed to recovery. (ie kernels) Considering this phone has some new security tricks not seen before its an ok trade while you wait for s-off IMO. I don't know if it will bring s-off any closer but I doubt it. I can't speak to the warranty situation but I would advise reading all the terms and conditions before proceeding. However consider this.....rooting your phone technically voids your warranty....

Yes perm root is as easy as flashing a recovery then using the recovery to flash the su and busybox binary. Then install superuser from the market and bam permanent root. (or just wait till someone makes a flashable package that will do all that for you.)

[Q] New to rooting.

So, I'm new to rooting, and, as such, after looking around the forums, I haven't found a similar thread (for the EVO 3D) about what ROM I should get. I've been looking through the CDMA forum at different ROMS, but I'm not sure which one to use. I won't be downgrading to 1.4 HBOOT, since I don't have a linux PC or the balls to do it, so I will be using the HTC Unlocker. All I want is to have the ability to use the Hotspot/tethering for free, because I'm not about to pay Sprint an extra 30 dollars/mo on top of my 65 dollar/mo plan right now.
So, if anyone has any help, I'd really appreciate it, because I have no idea what I'm doing.

My friend is saying there's more ways to root your phone other than the HTC Unlocker or the downgrade to 1.4 hboot. First off cause I don't have a linux PC, and my friend's friend said he used a program to root it on windows.
EDIT: After doing some research, I found this: http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-3d-hacks/how-to-downgrade-hboot-1-50-to-1-40-on-htc-evo-3d-new/ and this: http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-3d-hacks/how-to-root-htc-evo-3d/
I was wondering if these are reliable and they both work, mostly the Revolutionary app. Because I've heard that it's not all that amazing, but they must have updated it since I heard that.

Yeah, but the thing is, I've been comparing HTC Unlock with downgrade and root, the only difference, besides true s-off, is you aren't able to have you own splash screen with HTC Unlock (Big whoop.) So, instead of taking the time (albeit a few minutes) To downgrade my phone and to root it that way. I think I'll wait for ICS to come out, then for the HTC Unlock to update for it, since I rather like the way ICS will look, also as I've said before, all I really want is the ability to use the Sprint Hotspot without paying an extra 30 bucks. That and with the HTC unlock, I can still put on a custom ROM, if I so desire, once they've been updated for ICS.
Ohhhh... Where should I start.... Well for one s-off means a lot, not just splash screens... Which I love my custom splash screen btw.... Makes my phone extremely unique...
If I was in your shoes.. I would downgrade the hboot... Root it.. and install the tethering app... And be done with it... Regardless of when the ota comes out for ics.. that means very very little...
Once the ota does come out, ROM devs will be all over it, and custom ics roms will be popping up all over the place...
"All I really want is tether...." No its not.... Trust me once you dive into the rooted EVO 3d and you realize how the phone is suppose to run, not how it runs stock you will be glad you went through the trouble with the downgrade...
Do what you do, as long as your happy and enjoying your 3vo that's what's matters...

Well, my biggest problem with trying to downgrade is I'm having trouble finding a way to downgrade with just windows, since I don't have Linux. Unless I just didn't read it right, I think someone said that the link I posted about downgrading with windows is outdated?
EDIT: Why would I install a tethering app when, supposedly, I can use the Sprint Hotspot, which is supposed to be better than the tethering app? Also, I have quite a few apps on my phone and I'm not sure I'll be able to use them all still if I root my phone.

Well, for me, there's several issues with that. 1) I'm using a laptop that isn't mine for the time being, and i don't want to go and make a new partition. 2) If I were to wait till the parts for my new desktop to come in, I'd have to wait till the end of March anyways for a new processor to come out. 3) I've never even messed with Linux.

That would be just a wasted effort. Waiting on a different unlock just so your warranty with HTC won't be voided is nonsense. In my lifetime i never, ever used a manufacturer warranty on a cellphone when most people carry insurance.

Admittedly, it would be a waste of time, but it's not completely absurd to this that some people may still want an unlocked bootloader without HTCDev.
In my case, I got my phone set up the way that I wanted it before regaw_leinad got his rooter finished and before flashable modswere out. As of now, I don't want to go through HTCDev unlock and lose my non-backed up data. I didn't wait on the Regaw rooter (or unlock it myself) because I didn't want a new ROM on it anytime soon. Now that flashable mods are out, I wish that I would have unlocked then.
All of that said, I don't consider finding another exploit a priority. Devs shouldn't worry about it when it's done for them.
I'll bite the bullet and unlock it eventually.

[BL] Unlock without HTCDEV
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
The HTC Dev unlock method for the EVO3D was balls. It didn't do the trick and you had to spoof everything through Fastboot (cabled into your computer). That is a much more technical route and more dangerous for noobs. Also the recovery put on didn't always stick.
This time however with the E4GLTE the HTC Dev unlock is great and has provided everything you need to get rooted. There is a nice automated .exe (one single download) that will do the entire process for you. Takes about 10 minutes. Pretty sweet and you even get the super user apps pushed etc.
I've been kinda hesitant to unlock because of the warranty void, but a method like 18th.abn's method makes this noob even MORE hesitant! Unlocking my original evo 4g made this noob very nervous a couple years ago, but I love flashing roms and would really like to see what kind of performance can be unleashed on my new evolte...
There is also a one click method available now.

Yep S-off is the real question. I would bet by the time it reaches the US MoDaCo or another dev would have S-off already.

It is also only rooted by doing HTC Dev Unlock, there still is no root without doing the dev unlock and no S-OFF. Both of which I would prefer over dev unlocking. If I could get root without dev unlocking that would tide me over for quite awhile as they figure out S-OFF so I could at least get some apps transferred with data, greenfiy to save battery, ad blocker, and wifi tether.

I prefer to not deal with the HTC Dev Unlock based on the added steps/difficulties that people have to deal with on our EVO LTEs. I also don't like registering my device that it is unlocked with the manufacturer, it is none of their business if I do it and shouldn't effect my warranty for hardware issues.

Judging from Jcase's tweet I'm presuming he gained root without HTC Dev Unlock.

Good find. And I bet you're right, cuz there would be no reason to boast/announce if root was simply Gaines via htcdev.

Although that makes logical sense there is no rooting without htc unlock listed in the one forums so I am not sure that it does exist yet.
