Ive noticed serious battery drain since I first bought this fascinate from telus. On 2.1it lasted around 11 hours. Since upgrading to 2.2 leak, id say 8 hoirs max with only approx 1 hour of uusage and the rest on standby. I turned of sync, auto brightnrss and turned brightndss as.low as possible. I make sure no apps r running in the background. Yet it still dies superfast. Is this a issue with my battery thr phone itself or firmware or kernal. Its been a week of trying to find the problem so any help would b greatly appreciated. At tgis time im running 2.2 leak with all the files it came with and no root. Thx in advNce
And hour and 12 minutes with about 30 min of internwt surfing and im down to 80 percent WTF
I update OTA last week on Verizon to Froyo 2.2. My battery was overheating and draining like crazy from my CPU usage being at a constant 99%..
I found the source of the problem. An app I use for facebook called "FLOW". The CPU usage was cut to 20% when I killed it with "Advanced Task Killer".
I resolved the issue by: Opening Flow.. going to Preferences.. Notification Settings.. Refresh Type.. Checked Periodic Polling (I was using Gmail Experimental previously)
Hope this helps...

sounds about average for a fascinate....
I'm on telus as well and also have terrible battery life, I've found no fix other than completely turning off Data using the toggle when holding the power button. Flashing a new rom might fix this but I've been to scared to since I bricked a phone trying it the first time. Hopefully when/if ever we get a 2.3 update it fixes this
Does anyone know where one can get an extended battery for this? I picked one up but it's for the friggin Verizon US version, and the battery cover isn't compatible, even though the battery fits(camera doesn't align, speaker's not even close).
Seriously, the American counterpart's accessories have been my biggest frustration with this phone, next to battery life...
Thought I'd give this a bump. The battery life on this Telus Fascinate 4G is truly disappointing and jumping through hoops trying to find and kill apps and services with and without utilities is wasting far too much of my time.
Anybody get a good handle on this?
Bump for same problem.
Samsung Fascinate SCH-i500 Verizon
Running unmodified and unrooted. The phone itself works perfect. No problems other than the phone seriously eats battery. Yes the battery is still good and nothing wrong with it. Plugged in it charges super slowly. And the screen itself takes more than it provides. So i did the following.
A. Changed battery to a known working one.
B. Check with car charger and a home charger. As well as official samsung charger.
C. Gave a ROM a try. Running Dirty Unicorn. Lowered cpu to 800 max and 100 min.
D. Turned display to 50% Brightness.
My only try now is to try a different kernel or something. Im also thinking that the display itself is the culprit somehow eating to much voltage.
Or the gpu. The phones operating temps are good.
I have another post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2430393 relating to where i have a USB problem and need help figuring it out. There has not been any replies. So i am taking upon myself to learn more. Ive worked with 3 Droid Milestones. Hopefully these two i500s will not be to hard. I need help on this new i500 to see if its not the motherboard. The charging port is on the motherboard and if this replacement eats batteries , then the point would be mute to use it for a working USB. A conundrum.
Do i try a different kernel or somthing else. Whats my next step.. Please help.

what else do you have running?
what is the battery life overall usage? and screen usage hours?
screen is always gonna be the highest consumer of your battery
50% still pretty high unless you are out in sunlight, I keep mine between 0 and 30 % unless in sunlight
you can try running the greenify app from playstore.
what king of life are you expecting to get? anywhere between 6hrs to 24 hours total phone battery life is about average depending on how heavy user or how much in standby mode.

Its defiantly got something wrong as even though it says 56% if I unplug it, it will die in about 10 min. Even with a fully charged battery it does the same. Yes i also waited until 100% and wiped batt stats and at 3% left wiped stats. Screen is in standby

you can get better logs and information, plus if something is not easily visible to what is causing problems you can post up a log file for them to look at.

I had installed the program and it didn't really show anything abnormal. Although after installing the Bat Meter, when i shutdown it killed the phone till i ODIN. So tried on the other phone as well. Same thing. Install it and compared notes. Reboot phone and had to ODIN. So maybe bad app? Well whatever. I didn't see anything unusual. Although I did notice something strange about the phone that's bad with charging. I already eliminated the battery as the problem as well as charger. But the phone that is eating battery faster than it can charge, it gets warmer at idle than the other phone. It charged just super super tiny faster than the battery eats using just idle display on lock-screen. As well this phone also with a fully charged battery will read 100% But after about 21 minutes of poweramp at 33% volume on headphones will read about 52%. Then sitting rest at idle no display from 52% down to about 14% popup around another 5 min. Then completely dead in about 3 minutes. And the phone is pretty warm. Today it was ambient temp of around 87* outside and sitting in shade and it was hot enough that it wasn't comfortable on my cheek for more than 20 seconds. Half the time the temps are normal. Now remember I'm not running overclock and actually under clocked to 800. Ive tried 3 different roms with diff kernels and same. Could it possibly be a bad heat-sink? And the extra heat is killing battery?
[Q] Battery Drain
I recently was given a Fascinate and am having similar problems. I was told the phone had a bad battery, so I ordered a replacement. Once I got the new battery in, I flashed the phone with the Carbon ROM [the phone was unlocked, but running the OTA 2.3.5 I believe]. Everything seemed to be working fine the first week or two, but now there appears to be a serious battery drain or leak after I power the phone down. I can charge the phone to 100%, power it on and use it for a period of time, then power it down with 90% or more battery life, but when I turn the phone back on, the battery will either be really low, or completely dead, where the phone won't respond at all until I plug the charger back in.
I reflashed the phone with an AOKP ROM to see if that'd make a difference, but it didn't. I tried using the first battery and the drain/leak still persists. The commonality between the two roms is the Devil kernel, so I'm going to flash a different ROM with a different kernel to see if that makes a difference. I also installed the app mentioned above to log the battery stats/usage to see if anything stands out there.
Has anyone experienced something similiar - the Fascinate consuming battery life while powered off?
Yeah the power off leak does seem to exist.
Can't remember the cause though.
I've not tried to really confirm,, but try popping the battery out then back in after you have powered off,,, then check after it has sat overnight to see if drain still exist..
Mine i just always leave on a charger overnight.
.
[Q]
Thanks for the reply. I'll try that. I've left the phone on today, just put it to sleep during periods of inactivity, and the battery is currently at 75% with occasional mild use after 8+ hours "on".
[edit 11-29-13]
After almost two weeks of use, I can confirm that if I power the phone down and do nothing else, the battery will continue to drain to 0%. If I power the phone down then remove and replace the battery, it's fine. It's an extra step, but it works. Thanks again.

Now that the phone has been had a few days, what kind of battery life are you guys getting? Is it better than the Evo 4g at least?
A weeks time bro, but I'll comment. Out of 15 hours I am getting six hours of moderate to heavy use with 15% left... This phone's battery is looking promising.
Like I said though, we'll need a week before we all reach a consensus.

I used mine in a poor reception building for a 9 hour work shift, texting constantly and taking 3d photos for novelty of random stuff. I left with 55%. The key is using data only when you want to. I turned off auto sync and only used data sparingly, since I didn't need it on all the time.
Right now I got about 7 hours. Not happy but ill give it a few more charges.
Also I did not accept any ota so that's one problem.

14 hours off battery as of right now after a full (green light!!!) charge. sent about 120 texts, made a half dozen phone calls, and just below 60%. WiFi/Bluetooth on ALL day, and connected to WiFi all day. Even downloaded the OTA fix for HTC Watch.
The battery is AMAZING, and this is stock. The reviewers were full of ****. Although I believe the latest OTA fixed a sync issue, so that was probably causing unnecessary battery drain.
I repeat, the battery life is great.
if this is true... and im sure screenshots will b posted shortly, think of what this will be like on CM7 running custom kernels.........
Amazing battery life for me - better than 0G Evo, and far better than Epic 4G - though I did constantly charge that battery to oblivion. Looking promising!

suddenly bonar
A couple of things I've noticed right away.
1. CurrentWidget is inaccurate.
2. The upper limit on voltage during the charge scares me. On the EVO with an SBC kernel, we were always worried about going much about 4210 mV. On this EVO 3D, I noticed a 4275 right away. Seems to me that at 4300, it's all over, right?
3. I did not notice the precipitous drop from 100-90 or so that occured after taking the EVO 4G off the charger.
2 hours 27 minutes from full charge to "connect your charger" with everything turned on and video playing. About five minutes after plugging in video playback stopped and another message popped up stating that charging rate wasn't sufficient for current power usage. I wasn't using the included charger though.
Battery meter is flaky though. Reading 99% most of the time while charging and green light indicating full charge didn't come on 'til several minutes after battery status read full.

14 hours 39 Minutes of the charger. Battery is still at 34%.
I was on and off of WiFi and used the phone more than i normally would because it is new. I checked facebook a bunch, texted as I normally do, surfed the web a bit, checked email, twitter, took several 3D pictures and a couple of videos, used a few apps....blah blah blah.

Anyone returning their evo because of a overheating problem? Seems to be a serious problem and don't want it blowing up in my face. Read the article yesterday and checked mine and it charged at 4.348 mv. Or is this a software issue?
You wouldn't happen to have a eBay battery would you? Also the battery may get hot the first few charges. To reach 4.3V, well I'm not exactly sure how that's happening. Take it back I guess but if its your first charges then just give it time.
Unless the phone gives you a warning, or just shuts off its probably not overheating. You would be surprised how hot these can get and still be in a normal heat range. I tax my Evo pretty hard and it will get pretty damn hot, but never overheat hot.
What are you doing when it heats up? Are you playing games, charging, talking. Maybe some more info?
I've had mine in my pocket and noticed that some live wall papers really get the phone cooking. The My Beach one almost burned my leg! I guess my phone turned on in my pocket and it was going to town with random screen pushes. The phone was hot enough to hurt sensitve skin.
I've had my OG EVO get griddle pan hot several times. It has survived as well as the batteries. Every time I think I solved it, the next time it was something else.
Knock on wood, so far my 3VO hasn't got as hot. Yet.
next time you phone gets hot check and see how well your gps works.
there are some funky things going on with this phone.
Playing spider man and game froze the phone got extremely hot had to do a batt pull battery died in like 7 Min's
initial batt life was great like 14 hours and still had 50 percent after a week it got OG evo crappy, factory reset and juice def ultimate and batt is back to great.
Don't know if i should return for exchange.

No I'm using the stock battery and it was just plug into the wall charger and not doing anything. Don't we have 4.2v batteries? Shouldn't it not be charging anything about that?

It did go to 102f but i guess that's normal but sometimes it goes to 105 or 106 while charging.... But I have the evo4g and that never chargers above 4.2v... Just kinda worried... Don't want this phone blowing up in my face.
Haven't had this issue. I've been traveling and have changed the phone quite a bit from using the phone as a game system. It does get warm after 30 mins of angry birds. Nothing extreme however.

It wont blow up on you. You should be safe at those ranges. when you start hiting 115 and 120 thats when you may want to unplug it and turn it off.
I had mine charging in the car mount last Sunday while running google nav, and the LED started blinking red and green. I assume this is the overheat indicator, although I can't find it in any documentation.
I had one weird overheating incident right after getting it activated at the Sprint store. 15 minutes later, it had been sitting on my desk and I go to pick it up and its crazy hot. I quickly pulled the back off and removed the battery, the battery was not hot, it was something behind the cameras. CPU I suppose. I waited a few minutes to put the battery back in but then it wouldn't turn on (overheating protection?). Went back to the the Sprint store for an exchange. Waited, waited. In the meantime I put the battery back in and it started up. After waiting 45 minutes with no help in sight I gave up... sigh. Sprint stores around here are always a PITA.
I haven't seen this problem again but seriously what the f? I went ahead and applied the OTA updates in case they included some fix for this.
Yeah, in car charger mine hit 114 with gps going. Took it back, better but not great with the new one 102. EVO 4g ran hot but that was self induced. Oc etc... Stock shouldn't go above 102 ever

My question is should a phone be charging over 4.2 when the voltage of the battery is 4.2 max? Wouldn't that greatly reduced the battery life if charged over that voltage? Anyone care to explain? Cos I'm really not sure what the implications are.

The voltage of the stock battery is 3.8V. I am surprised it would see higher voltages but it may have a variance that is +-(.4) even when charging the voltage shouldn't vary that much, but the amperage should increase instead to charge the battery and run the phone at the same time. I am not sure where you seen the voltage at though so if its an app, how accurate is that app. How often does this happen as well?
I just received my Rezound new yesterday, downloaded some apps from the market, and set everything up for normal use today. I got it off the charger this morning around 7:30am at 100% and its dead at 4:30pm. I would consider my use light today as I only used the web for maybe 10 minutes. I mostly did things like add contact shortcuts to my home screens and move icons around, and download maybe 2 new apps.
I came from a Droid 2 which got pretty awesome battery life running Liberty 3 and I'm wondering if my usage time is normal.
Total Time 8h 22m 33s
Display 80% (Time on 2h 45m)
Call Stand 5%
Phone Idle (Time on 5h 37m)
Android System 3%
Dolphin Browser 2%
Android OS 2%
Wi-Fi 2% (Time on 1h 38m)(I don't believe I was connected to any networks though)
Drop box 2%
The screen is what kills it along with LTE. If your screen was on for 2:45 that is why. The display sucks battery on this phone.
Thanks for the reply, I figured that was the case, but I still thought I would have gotten a little longer. I hope a custom ROM will help some with the battery life.
I am on stock rooted and don't really have battery issues. Typically I get 12-14 hours which by then I have easy access to power. If it is going to be a long day, I use the extended battery. It is not uncommon to still have charge left going into late at night.
I have the screen less than a third of the way on the selector and have Auto brightness turned off. Screen timeout is set to 1m but when I set the phone down, I have a widget called ScreenOff that I click to blank the screen. Primary reason for doing that is so I don't accidentally enter some app, but a secondary is that it turns off the screen before it would normally timeout.
When I am at home or at work, I use WiFi almost 100% of the time which due to strong WiFi signals there, (for me) uses less battery power than LTE.
Otherwise, I have LTE on.
Right now today, I am about 50% with 9h 12m of use. I fully charge nightly with the AC charger on my night stand so when I get up it is 100%.
I have an extended battery, but normally use the stock battery unless I know I am going to be away from the office for long periods of time.
I am not much of a game player, but I do watch short videos from time to time. I have streamed music, but don't normally. I get 10-20 calls a day typically and use my browser on a regular basis (reddit as well).
The camera is Awesome!
Unless your display was on max brightness and you were streaming HD movies. That's bad battery life. I get 2 times that even with autobrightness, maybe your battery isn't broken in yet
A good measure is 30minutes display time per 10%, and 1% per hour with 3G and normal sync scheduling... If your apps sync ever 15 minutes that will kill it, and 4G should kill it a little more than just 3G... Minor fluctuations are still OK, but you shouldn't have 15 minutes per 10% unless everything is basically on full blast
My battery life using the setup in my sig is usually very good.
I can easily make it through a normal workday listening to mp3s from my card/texting etc using the standard battery. My screen is set to 30%, screen timeout to 30 seconds.
I do like to stream audio however using iheart radio or Sirius radio online. If I do that, I'm lucky if I make it 4 hours on the standard battery (without ever turning the screen on) When I am going to do that, I use the extended battery and keep a 2nd one in my pocket. I have two external chargers I use so I always have spare fully charged batts.
I actually prefer the feel/weight of the phone with the extended battery and the HTCPedia cutout hard rubber case.. That gives me a better grip on the phone and I barely notice the weight difference when it is in a Jean pocket.
I guess it just depends on the actual phone itself. My phone charges everynight. I pull it off the charger at 6 am and by 10am the battery is dead. I have 3 batterys, and a wall charger that I carry around. I don't consider myself a heavy user either. No music or videos. Only text, gtalk, gmail and a phone phone calls that last a few min each. I only have google and exchage set to push. My 2 yahoo accts sync every 4 hours. I do have fecebook as well. Screen is very dim. This was all using rooted cleanrom.
I am now back to bone stock, with a CLNR phone that just arrived yesterday (due to connection problems with my computer) So maybe a stock rom unrooted will make a difference. Heres hoping!
Sad.....great phone, I love it!

Diff. Roms equal diff results for me. All of the ICS roms I've tried all keep my phone up time and awake time the same. Is anyone else having this issue? Due to this, I typically end up getting around 5 hours of life even if I leave my phone off for the duration of that time. It's annoying because I really want to stay on ICS but get double the battery life out of the GB Roms.

On Scotts CleanRom 3.6, with fairly heavy usage (hour of solitaire, hour of browsing xda, texting, 30 minutes of phone calls) I can get about 10 hours before needing a charge again. Before I updated to 3.6, which has the 3.8v battery fix, I could only get about 5 or 6 hours of similar usage. I don't recall if prior versions had my awake and up times the same, but I haven't noticed it recently.

I take it you don't stream audio like I do??
I just got my Rezound yesterday, and have noticed a surprisingly poor battery life. I did all my setup yesterday, and fully charged the battery over night. After unplugging it this morning, I listened to music off the sd card for about 45 min, browsed the net for about another 45, then stopped using it for a while. I noticed the battery was about halfway through, so I plugged it in to my car charger and did some more Internet stuff. However, after checking the battery info, I realized that even plugged in to the car charger it was consuming more power than it was taking in. I finally had to turn it completely off and let it charge to get the battery from yellow back to green.
This is the same charger I used for my Droid X, so I know that it is working...

I've been running BAMF ICS v0.9 for a few days, and the other versions before that. I get 12-14 hours with 4G on, and 20-23 with 4G off....I keep the screen on 40% brightness
Watch your clock speeds if you are on ICS. They constantly Max out, both cores. That's where your battery life is going.
Sometimes data flickers for me on random days, that's the only thing that wears my battery down fast. But I can still go through the day have 40ish percent left. If it doesn't flicker I can go through through day with about 50% left. And if in on Wi-Fi most of the time I have nore than that left over. And that's with using the phone for a couple of hours with the display on.
Trying ineffabilis with DSBs 1.1.3 kernel and undervolt it some
for me, battery life killers can be streaming audio (sirius xm or espn radio) and definitely jelly wars. Phone will die on extended battery in about 4 hours of continuous play.
Otherwise, normal usage, I get 10-16 hours of use on my extended battery before swapping it out (use 2 extended batteries).
4g definitely runs the phone hotter than wifi (about 20 degrees hotter for me)
The only time my phone gets around 95 degrees is if it's on a charger and I'm watching a movie, and it takes about an hour for it to feel warm, which could even be caused from me holding it the whole time. 4G doesn't get my phone any hotter than 3G Or Wi-Fi. Guess every phone is different though. least we get signal xD

Thought I was done with heat after I got my replacement phone but the 4G hotspot Cooks! 120 is now a daily ordeal.
KORM via the beast known as the Rezound.
This is my 4th note. The 3 I had previously the battery lasted a long time. I kept the same battery from the first one in all three exchanges. I took the new battery for this fourth one. Could this battery be a bad one or should I return the phone again for a 5th time. I don't wanna take a chance getting a phone with the problems I had on the other 3.
Just looking for some opinions

Good Lord, 3 exchanges! Wow... try running the battery all the way dead where the phone shuts itself down, keep it on the charger and charge it overnight (or in the realm of 8 hours) while leaving it off and see if that makes a difference. I ran my batt that way once and I'm getting 18 or so hours per charge (depending on how much I play with it).

Could it really be a defective battery? Seems more like battery drain would be a phone hardware issue. All the batteries are made the same right?

Reflash your modem, rom, and kernel. See if that helps
I only get about 3 hours of screen time myself. Seems normal for this phone. The huge screen eat up battery fast. Plus if your using LTE, so good bye to your battery.
I don't think you have a bad phone, That's just how it is in my opinion...
so whats your total at the end.. like say.. 5%..?
If you're getting about 3hrs screen time, I'd say you'd be on par with what I'm getting. Some days I can eek out close to 5 hours screen time, usually on the weekends when im at home and on WiFi.

Considering the size of the screen I am getting decent battery life, sounds like what your experiencing is normal :/ but going through 3 phones must be very frustrating.

Auto Brightness?
I don't know why you guys are getting such horrible times. With regular use I'm getting an average of 8-10 hrs screen time, depending on what I'm doing. I'm running Saurom RCVI, with Da_g OC Kernel, and tweaked a few of the JKay settings. I recommend charging to 100%, wiping batter stats, and doing a power cycle on it. That's what I did after installing above Rom/Kernel, and battery went from from 4-5hrs to at a minimum 7hrs.

I would like to see a screen shot of that
Fighting battery problems here as well. I'd assume it was normal for this phone, except when I see people posting great times.
1 week old phone. Switched to Saurom yesterday to see if it's any better. Screen regularly at 5%. Usually on Wifi most of the day (and I'm not in an LTE market yet). I set all my synchs (rss, weather) to 4 hours. Others (Twitter) are manual. Only Exchange Email is push.
Using Cpusy & BetterBatteryStats to try to see what's going on. Could be a bad battery - could be that the number I'm seeing is wrong.
Anyway, I'm getting about a 7% drain an hour *with the phone off* ! I'm even rebooting as needed to make sure it's in deep sleep & not 384 (which is very, very annoying). Unplugging the phone @ 7am means a dead battery by 3pm. And if I'm using the phone, it's more like 12-15% an hour (min screen, reading a book). Been charging in the car and at work - whenever I can for now.
Going to try to run some tests on the new rom. Leave phone off for 30-60 minutes & track % loss. Then, maybe put it in airplane mode & try again.
Some weird ones I see to often - Adfree, Maps, Alarm Manager (which I understand can come from almost any of my apps). Oh - tried Juice Defender, no help there either (didn't make any difference at all)
Finally, in the car with Waze (gps), a Podcast Playing, and the screen cranked up for visibility - the car dock/charger keeps the phone about even. On my HD2, a drive to work would charge up like 20-30% of my phone.
Really, really hope I don't need to carry a 2nd battery for days when I can't keep the phone charging.

How often do you get exchange emails? I stopped using push exchange email as it was a huge drain on the battery with the volume of emails I get...
With this phone the screen draws some serious juice, so if your using you phone in the car with the screen on its using about 950mah of juice, so your car charger will likely only keep this phone from losing power, it may not gain any juice, and it may even loose juice depending on charger power and what the phone is doing currently.
This is also why most of us are seeing about 3 hours of screen on time, as while the screen is on its using probably 700-800mah of power. divide that by the 2500mah battery and you can see why...
You can try other programs to try and help with things like background data, undervolting, etc, but that's all going to have a small effect as the "problem" is the screen, its eats up most of your juice. If you want to save battery you need to go after the big thing, the screen, not the little things. However short of reducing the brightness there's not a ton you can do about the screen. It is a big screen, and it needs big power to drive it.

I get about 5 an hour during the day. Will try setting it to once an hour in my testing instead of push.

I *think* (need to double check) that the charger is putting out 1A. Where did you get the 950m number from? Is there an appx. chart for different levels of screen brightness (how about 50% for example when in the car? oh - and how much lower is the 5% I use indoors?)
Agree, the #1 thing is the screen itself, which is why I get very confused when I have the large drain with the screen off.
I'll also have to try a test today where I turn on my podcast, but leave Waze off - and turn the screen off while it's charging in the car.

950mah is an educated guess. If you have root you can run this in a terminal to see how much power you car charger is giving the phone... (su first)
cat /sys/class/power_supply/battery/batt_current_adc
I usually get about 9100 for a result, which is 910.0 mah. and my phone will charge barely if I dont have gps going (screen on). if screen is on and gps is on the phone will slowly discharge, so that puts the phone power usage at about 900mah with screen on, so maybe 950 was too high of a guess. So when the phone screen is on, your using a ton of juice for such a small battery.
If I use just a podcast app and the screen is off the phone will charge much faster while in the car. If I have google maps running, it stays almost even...
You could even calculate your usage. She how many minutes your were driving with the screen off and the phone charging and note the amount of battery% gained in those minutes. You'd see a huge difference in charging times with the screen off. In my 50 minute commute to work, I gain about 20% battery charging with the screen off... With the screen on, I see almost nothing.
Seems like some days are better than others.
