Some questions involving my droid3 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey everyone. I dont claim any intelligence or know how when it comes to all this hacking and modding but i do wish my droid could do things it cant do now.
i was able to follow the very simple instructions to root my phone but now that it is rooted im not sure *exactly* what benefits this grants me. What i do know, is that ill be able to use wireless tethering without verizon charging me. In trying to make this happen i came across this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358568
(i cant post there being new)
what i want to know is, where can i get Cyanogenmod for my phone? D3 isnt even listed on their site as being a supported device.
and where can i find the required files to preform the radio hack?
lastly and hopefully the easiest question i have is what other benefits does rooting my phone provide me?
id love to be learned a thing or two but please dont kill me for the overly long post.

[Q]

I bought an eris off craigslist, and this time around it was a bit of a ripoff.
make a long story short, guy cloned it (or so it seems) and I couldn't really get it to work. So now i started reading the
HOW TO: Fully Flash an HTC Droid Eris to Metro PCS found on Howard Forums and copied throughout the area
and it's a great read. I go to metro pcs, have them flash it. They tell me that since it was cloned the ID numbers on it are from some old phone at some point the phone may stop working. (Great...)
Hence I need a phone so I have this until i get another or it dies and I get another-whichever comes first.
Now in reading that great tutorial I have come to part 3, number 6. I can't get it to work properly. So i post on that thread my dilemma (it's on the last page of it), and someone replied that if I am getting "$" prompts and not a "#" prompt it isn't rooted.
oookkkkkkkkk.
So now, i am looking to root it I guess. After reviewing some threads here it seems there are some massive advantages to rooting the phone. and find this nice thread:
Eris Rooting Guide: Updated 18 November 2010, 10:47 am Central U.S. (found on androidforums)
So now that you have some background and I am running out of breath, here's the actual questions (please keep in mind while i learn quick and am "computer techy" i am oblivious to phones):
1) Will rooting the phone mess up my flash, or the fact that it's cloned.
2) Will it wipe out any valuable information?
3) If I root it will i lose connection to my service?
4) is there a way to reset the phone so I have the original ID numbers to it? (guy at metro pcs dealer tried and it wouldn't work no matter what he did and i thought him pretty fluent in his work)
5) most folks have told me to go with the 1 click root, while that sounds awesome, does it truly matter what rom i use? (one with it or something like froyo (not v 38 i guess)
Additionally if someone could recommend some good reads, I would appreciate it. While I realize most people first think to scour the posts posted (and I have) it's difficult to pull tangible information in an efficient manner with such a vague search ( How to root eris), not to mention, I would prefer advice from reputable folks and there are always ppl out there to hurt others (hence i know this is THE place to go )
OK, now Ive run out of breath
Thanks in advance to all
JSammy
PS sorry can't post links - im a noob to this board
1) Will rooting the phone mess up my flash, or the fact that it's cloned.
It shouldn't.
2) Will it wipe out any valuable information?
No.
3) If I root it will i lose connection to my service?
No.
4) is there a way to reset the phone so I have the original ID numbers to it? (guy at metro pcs dealer tried and it wouldn't work no matter what he did and i thought him pretty fluent in his work)
Not sure. Probably not.
5) most folks have told me to go with the 1 click root, while that sounds awesome, does it truly matter what rom i use? (one with it or something like froyo (not v 38 i guess)
You can use whatever ROM you like. I personally recommend Tazz Floyo. It's a matter of preference.

[Q] Rooting "A shot in the dark"

Have been reading any and all Rooting Posts and I have come to the conclusion that as of now, Most, if not all of the Rooting techniques are a shot in the dark.
If there is one good way that is reliable and doesn't screw up one thing or another than I have not seen it.
Example......Superoneclick....works on one phone but not the next....Roms....need more fixes to get to work than Microsoft.....
Tell me is there a proven way to unlock the bootloader, Root the phone and get Gingerbread to work fully ?
I may be new to this site and believe me I would love to have a open phone....But I have other things to do than F around trying to get a already KickAss phone to work.....Just saying....

you need to do more reading, no one uses superoneclick for the atrix... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1165791
Read the stickies..
Have you ever opened the android dev section?
Almost everything is in the sticky thread of clown.. With faqs guides etc..
Unlock your bootloader depending what atrix you have(att or international), then install the tenfars port of CWM4, and then you can root using the CWM root method..

To build on your Microsoft comment...............Some software is not compatible with all versions of Windows. The Atrix came out with Windows 95, has made it to XP, and with GB will be Windows 7. If you are not happy with the devs work, what they have done for everyone, and can't filter through the threads to get what you want, maybe you should get an iPhone and stick Cydia on it!......Or get a Windows phone because you won't have to "fix" anything on it!
If you want help, then you have started out the wrong way. Your post needs to be objective, and not flaming all the work others have done because you can't implement any of it, and are confused.
Root, ROM's, etc., do not need a bunch of fixes............you just have to READ so you know which ones work together for what you want. If you had actually taken the time, you would know that the bootloader has been unlocked, root is working, and GB is awesome. You just have to check the instructions for what you want on your Atrix, whether it be AT&T, Orange, Bell, etc.
Personally, I am on an AT&T Atrix 4G with unlocked bootloader, rooted, with GB 4.5.91, and have absolutely no complaints ot problems!
Since you don't want to F around, watch that door................it's heavy and swings closed fast.........wouldn't want it to hit you between the buttocks on the way out!
Bell ATRIX, unlocked bootloader, rooted, running 2.3.4. No problems

Root device

I have a quistion.
What are the good things and bad things about rooting my SGS2.
And what is the best way to do it?

A good and bad thing is that you get full control of your device. It is good because it allows you to accomplish some things that would otherwise not be possible, like removing bloatware, tweaking the OS at a low level, etc. It can be bad because if you don't know what you are doing you can cause severe instability in your device, making it practically unusable (you could flash to restore, and go back to usable).
In general, if you are careful and READ to get an understanding of what you are doing, you will not run into much trouble.
There are many ways to do it, like flashing a rooted ROM or using SuperOneClick, but the options and ways to do it will depend on your specific device. If you let us know what this is we can help you with more precise details (what model of the SGS2 do you have?).
Hope this helps.

Since you are new, you should start getting familiarized with the forum, and how to search before you ask questions. Searching before asking is one of the rules here. In your case, this is the forum for your device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1015
Please take a look at this FYI: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21919233&postcount=13
To answer your question directly, take a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416706
and find the tool here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352
Hope this helps. Another social convention here in the forums is that if you find a post helpful, you should hit the Thanks button.
Searching helps to avoid multiple posts on one same topic, and also allows you to learn and hopefully share what you have learned with others here.

[Q] Bought a rooted and flashed Ntelos Photon

I bought a photon last week thats on Ntelos Frawg. so theres that... it works great, but its also rooted. i didnt do it, and dont know anything about rooting. ive been trying to look into it but its just not my thing. dont get it. sorry for being so nooby, but i didnt ask for it lol. anyway, how can i see whats already been done to it, and how can i know what could b done to it? the guy who sold it to me can do stuff to it. but i gotta know what i want him to do. please! any help will be appreciated.
Theres a free app in the market called "root checker" or something along those lines, its an easy way to check if you have root. You can tell if the bootloader is unlocked by looking at the top left corner of your screen when it is first booting, if it says "unlocked" then your bootloader is unlocked. It will show it while at the Moto dual core screen. I'd personally read up on rooting, unlocking, and all that goodstuff so you know what you have/can do. But basically root allows you to install apps that unleash androids true potential that you cant use without having root access, like free wifi tether, etc. Unlocking your bootloader allows you to install a new recovery(ClockworkMod usually) which then allows you to flash new ROMS and Kernels. I wont go into much depth there but it basically allows you to customize your phone how YOU want it to be, via Roms, Kernels, Themes, and all that. Currently with our Photon though you will lose Sprint 4g(Wimax) by unlocking the bootloader so if its important to you than you may not want to unlock the bootloader. Theres plenty of threads on XDA and other sites too that have loads on info on CWM, ROMS, Root, and everything. QBKing77 has a bunch of SUPER great Youtube videos for us Photon owners(and other phones) so be sure to look for those! If you have any more questions or anything feel free to PM me or post on the forums!
^^^ this
and make sure not to pay him for all these "awesome services". the tools are all here for free. i dont charge anyone for teh one click, theres no reason for anyone to charge others for it
@shabby i actually have your kernel and im totally satisfied, the only thing i really want right now is the slide to wake feature. Does it support it? And if not, im having a hard time finding one that does without losing stuff i do need. I guess it might only be for the evo right now?
Well i think anyway lol.

Cant speak for him, but im pretty sure whoever made the slide to wake feature hasnt released the source code yet, and without that the devs cant really do much but wait. Here is a link to the thread where people were discussing it for the Photon, im sure if/when we get it that this thread will be updated or a comment posted.

[Q]What is the Best Way to Root Note SGH-i717??

Hello, I was just wondering the best way to root the AT&T Samsung Note SGH-I717. I have looked up many ways but every time I scroll down to the comments I read everyone is having problems. I would just like the best and most proven way to root the phone. I use the phone with straight talk, it is an unlocked att phone, will rooting the phone affect anything with Straight Talk? I am new to rooting so please be detailed and give me links to get everything I need. Thank You so much.

so here is the deal, here are 2 methods with very subtle differences. you didn't say what your phone was running now, so here are my suggestions.......
READ, READ, READ
I know you are new here, and I was once too. I went through all of this and was very nervous about the process. (no real reason to be)
I spent a good 2 weeks reading so I would feel confident about what I was doing. I would read through these and figure which is better for you or which you feel more confident in using. they would both work fine depending on your situation or what you phone is running. because these threads are older, you may run into an issue as to where the download files are not active anymore. that is where a recent Google search could come into play. you say you have read the comments for different methods have had negative results. problem is you don't know whether that person followed the directions correctly or whether they were just in a hurry and missed something.
that's why I posted both these threads. compare to what you have read. I have a habit of going to the back of the threads and read forward. this tells me what the most recent problems may have been and if there is a solution. though the files may or may not be active, you can always get the file. its the PROCESS which is correct. compare them.
as I said........... READ, READ, READ
it puts you in the situation to help yourself first
take your time, do as the process suggests. I even rehearsed it several times. due to my lack of experience, I wanted to be as prepared as possible in case something went wrong.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504218
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1518962
both of these threads are from very reputable members of the community. as all threads will suggest......they are NOT responsible for what you do. make sure you are ready. watch Youtube tutorals, compare processes, have your files loaded and where you have easy access, read and rehearse.
take your time
whatever you need to do to feel confident. if something goes wrong....KNOW what you are going to do next. if you don't know where you went wrong in process or deviated from it, then others cant help.
good luck and I hope I have helped
edit.......
just saw this...this is at the back of Da G 's thread. suggested by AGOATTAMER. he is the man when it comes to having old links to process. this IS the one I used, that I couldn't find.
