According to a comment on MakeUseOf.com:
In general iPhone Apps will not work on anything but iOS.
If you developed the App yourself [and have the Source Code] it depends on the tools you have used.
If you used Xcode all the way the App would be in Objective-C [which is hardly supported outside the Apple world] with Cocoa APIs [which are Apple only].
This means you would have to re-write the entire App.
If you used some other base (Java, C++) and some porting platform there might be a chance that there are tools to port it to other mobile platforms as well.

i think the answer the OP is looking for is a yes or no
as far as im aware its not available on android yet. Cant recommend an alternative as i dont really know what instagram does.

[Q] Is it possible to convert an adobe flex-generated app from ios to Android?

I have an app that was created for the ios. This app was ported in a way that all the individual stems of it are available for individual view and it isn't really compiled (half compiled, really).
My question is, since this project (Björk's Biophilia appp, specifically, available in the apple store) was created with a cross-platform app compiler, is it possible to import it back in to that compiler (I believe it was made with Adobe Flex or similar) and save it as an Android-usable application without re-writing the code from scratch?
Before anyone tries to say that this is impossible, the artist herself specifically said it was made to be possible:
Björk said:
She told Drowned in Sound that the apps had been specifically designed so that they could be easily ported to other platforms -- like Symbian, BlackBerry and Android. "We really made sure when we wrote all the programs that they will transfer to other systems."
"I'm not supposed to say this, probably, but I'm trusting that the pirates out there won't tie their hands behind their back."

I would ask the developers, but I'm not in that entourage, so it's hard to get hold of them.
I know a whole community that would be ecstatic if this was easy for someone to do...

ios to android

Now after reading the title I know what ure thinking 'this guy is a dumbasss' but i recently found a peice of developing software called unity and with this dev tool you can create apps in a certain code from what I understand and switch between platforms such as ios android xbox ps3 and windows mac linux from what i understand! of course when you switch youll have to change the aspect ratio and watnot.
I used to be an iphone user before i got my xperia play and i have quite a few beloved gaming apps. If i was to turn the ipa into .zip which i have done and unzipped all its contents and i then copied the contents to unity and switched platforms like i mentioned before how much work would that involved to get a simple game from ios to android. i suppose this is a question I should post on the unity site but I thought id post here first because there are many developers on xda who might have used unity software before unlike myself.
It doesn't work that way... you write the app with Unity, you can't just take someones binary blob and "convert" it with something like Unity. You would use Unity to write your own software. From scratch.
Trying to keep this as non technical as I can but basically the answer is no, it won't work. Sorry.
Could there be an iphone emulator created? Or is that not possible?

Not possible iOS is not open source otherwise developers would be pounding out iOS ports to multiple devices. Unfortuantly there is no way to even possibly emulate it at this moment. Maybe in the future they will make it open source. whoo knows

Not possible. Not for at least another 10 years maybe.
This is the best chance you have of an iOS emulator: iEmu (ignore the cancelled status)
Keep an eye on the dev's Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/cmwdotme or the project homepage: http://www.iemu.org/index.php/Main_Page
The only fully functional iOS emulator that exists is apples own closed source emulator for the Mac, Its only really for app development though.

Hence why iEmu is the best chance to get iOS on Android at the moment. Although it's based on QEMU, which is a full system emulator (hardware etc) so speed would be an issue. It's also still in very early development status

They dont want the iOS interface they want the ability to use iOS apps on android. You cant deny that iOS has alot more quality apps and games than android does.
However getting an iOS emulator on android is something which we will probably never see ever.

so what is in the app is a compiled version of the sofware which someone wrote which you cannot uncompile to switch platforms and then recompile is what i think your saying correct?
With the way apple acts they would probably throw a lawsuit at you for making that port. Ha ha ha!

Microsoft Silverlight

Will it ever work with Android?.
Can someone make it to work, i think that it is a money maker don't you think?
+1. Getting Sky Go to work by the back door, rather than wait for a tablet s compatible app. would be a bonus.

It is almost certain that we will never see true Silverlight on Android. It's proprietary closed-source nature means Microsoft would have to be heavily involved, which they are unlikely to do.
The alternative is Moonlight, a free software version of Silverlight, developed by Novell, and released on Linux systems. An Android port of this is technically possible, but no easy feat.
It is also worth noting that this won't allow you to view Sky Go (or Netflix) content on Android, since that service uses Silverlight's built-in DRM, a function that Microsoft will not allow the Moonlight team or any third-party to see or implement outside of their control.
Well thats a bummer ...But thanks for your reply
Maby the same reason why Windows and Android are two totally different softwares.

There you go, problem solved. (I'm from Aus, so we don't have Netflix, I just know the Web interface for Netflix apparently uses Silverlight)
There is a version of the skygo app that has been modded to run on any device. It works on my se Arc s,Archos gen 8 and galaxy tab 7 plus. It even runs with the devices rooted, although it may need to be installed before root is aquired.
Yeah as acg93 said problem with Moonlight, the open source version, is that it doesn't support Silvrrlight's DRM and therefore won't work for Lovefilm, Netflix or Sky. Best bet for these is native apps or waiting until HTML 5 video has a decent DRM solution and they adopt that.

Must have APPS??

Hi everyone
Just wanted to ask, what are your must have apps?
I need some ideas for new apps. The only apps (except the XKCD viewer) I could think of are listed in the core apps and I don't feel like joining these projects just yet.
So if you have any ideas or if you know some Android or iOS apps which could be ported leave a comment.
1. An IM client like Empathy
2. A Wallbase application/or anything that fetches nice HD wallpapers.
3. An application to watch anime
I had a similar question earlier, you might be able to mine something from those that answered
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2105374
The main app most people wanted was What's App, but I saw that some one else has been developing a client for it.

It is my firm belief that we should have an APP INSTALL client that seamlessly installs apps FIRST! Then let the DEVS roll out the suggestions. What's the format anyway? not APK I would guess. I think a nice APK converter would work nicely then.

- What the heck is an APK? (That's only for Android and has nothing todo with linux, yes I said it android has nothing todo with linux )
- There are many ways to install an app.
-> you can install a .deb file
-> add a ppa our use the official repos and install via consol
-> build the binarys from source....
Currently someone is working on an "app store" but this is not a priority since ubuntu touch is still in pre alpha.
P.S. I am a DEV and I need some Ideas that's why I started the thread.
Some way to access Pandora One. I listen to some 300 hours a month, so it's definitely a requirement, not a 'want'.
Statement form pandoras website
We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative. ....

A Pandora client sounded like a good idea but "this" makes it rather impossible
Hope you'll find some dev's located in the us that can help you with that.
I'm personally worried about not having an app to track and control my phone in the event it's lost or stolen. An Ubuntu touch UI for Prey or something to that effect would be awesome.

Android app port to Ubuntu Touch

Hey!
We know, that we can't run Android apps on Ubuntu Touch. The UT is a great operating system, but it has a big problem. It doesn't have any "neccessary" or "must have" applications NOW. These apps are the following by the community's opinion: FacebookMessenger, WhatsApp, Google Maps, a browser (like Chrome, Opera mini or Firefox), instagram, etc.
So, I want to know, that we are possible to port these (or any other) Android apps to UT, or not? If the answer is yes, i want to create a team. In this team i want to port Android apps, or create this apps alternatives.
Guess not much up in the forums
Request: Simyo Call Status App [Netherlands]
Hi there,
I haven't been on the xda forums a lot since the end of 2009 I believe but, since Canonical announced Ubuntu Touch this year, I have my reasons to pick up browsing the forums again. The Ubuntu Touch region, specifically.
Now, you were asking if there's any Android Apps to port to Ubuntu Touch.
I have a request that might not be of interest to a lot of people but will get pretty important to me once a 'user version' of Ubuntu Touch is released:
Simyo Netherlands provides an App to check your current "Belstatus" or call status.
This app provides me (on my iPhone) with the current remaining minutes/sms messages and remaining data (megabyte) for the current month within the contract.
Below the link to the Android equivalent in the Play Store, which might be portable to an Ubuntu Touch app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.simyo.mijnsimyo
Let me know if this is something you'd be interested in doing.
I might be of some help being a C# programmer, but I still need to check out the Ubuntu Touch SDK (my HTML5 and QML knowledge is poor) and that's something I won't be able to very soon....

You can port any already existing apps that are found on Android, you just need the API from the app developers.

No, there's no tool like that for Ubuntu Touch (yet?).
I'd be willing to port my Android apps to Ubuntu touch. Does the work need to be done from scratch? Is there a simpler way to port a java, native, android app to Ubuntu?
I can't contribute anything app-wise, but this sounds like a really good idea; best of luck!
Ubuntu-Touch must LIVE! I have use it and it is cool system. Some problems with applications time to time appeares. And it is very hard find developers for apps. But I think if required apps appeares -- more people move to UT. And first of all that system must use NOT for games.

Till last some years UT has some changes. For example appears OpenVPN network manager in a base apps. But unfortunately that feature with unresolved bugs. Also I didn't find any browsers like QupZilla/Mozilla FireFox or Lynx. So As for me we required updated OS for first. And normal browser. Current versions of browsers are unusable. That i big part of work. For that required powerful developers group. I try to compile and run some examples to UT but unfortunately unsuccessful. But I try. Who also try do something but with successful result?
