Muffled voice - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

All is great except everyone sounds muffled. Is there a fix for this?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium

Might be a defective unit if the handset is sounding muffled. if you sound muffled it may be a mic issue with the rom you're using. but if the sounds you're hearing are muffled it may be the rom, or maybe it is simply a defective unit. Are you rooted? If so try flashing another rom before you assume anything.

It was like that stock and the same on unamed.

How do I go back to stock to go back to art?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium

From Google searches, seems to be a common issue. Too bad, otherwise a good phone.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium

There's an awesome write up by creepyncrawly to take it back to stock.
I haven't had any issues with calls. They've all sounded great. This is the first time I've heard of it being an issue from anyone in this forum. Not saying it isn't affecting phones, but I don't think it's that widespread. Might want to think about exchanging if you've tried everything you can.

Using a case?

Yes, using the pop case but it was the same before.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium

I've never had any sound problems - most people with issues with muffled sound are using an improperly made case.

Thanks for the replays!

I give up! I ordered this phone from at&t and now they want me to use a go phone so I can ship them my phone. I could exchange it if I lived in a city that had the sgII in stores but all they have are the skyrocket. This muffled voice crap is really getting to me. With a case, without or a different ROM including stock it's there. Is the skyocket really that bad? I need a phone I can actually use as a phone. I hate the idea of carrying a huge phone around!

You wouldn't be without a phone that long. Suprised they didn't give you a loaner phone at the store.
You really want to think about getting a skyrocket? Go to the dev section over there.
Here it is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1383
Count the roms. For that matter count every thread in the dev section. 28. And that's including the locked ones.
Then for kicks read through the Q&A section here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1401
I tried my best to help answer the basic android questions over there. I couldn't last a week. So many questions were repeated over and over. And by far they were beyond 'search google and pick the first result' easy. More locked threads from people being idiots than I've ever seen in a forum. I could feel myself losing patience and left before I snapped.
The level of intelligence/maturity in at&t sgsii and international sgsii is refreshing.
Hopefully in a weeks span things have improved. But I really doubt that.

Why would you post that you want to take the devs away from us?
It's inevitable the Vibrant is a great phone, but for most after about a year of the phone the devs have it tweaked and bested this phone. At this point, most want new tech to toy with, it's human nature.......
Ya the vibrant can't get a whole lot better then what it is already.. they will move on in time. But who is to say when

I'm holding off till summer. The G2x looks promising, but summer time should bring more goodies.
Not hating on the vibrant, but the g2x is my next phone!!! Prolly not as soon as it comes out. Want to make sure no problems. Love my vibrant!

Yeah I'm going to be doing the same! Wait till the end if summer to check out all the phones & see how this AT&T T-Mobile merger goes! I have a feeling it won't go through & I get to stick around with my cheaper plan for a lot longer!

Issue I have drummed up on the G2x already. This is from forums here and a few others with people on the 2x and a few that have early G2x's. The only thing is some of the issues are software related, or seem so, and since the G2x will be running straight Android those issues may not show up.
Bluetooth seems to have issue's with remembering devices and random disconnects. Also on 2x Wiimote does not work.
Wifi locks up randomly when the signal is on the in/out edge causing data to be lost since the phone doesn't know to go back to 3g/4g.
Camera has blurry pictures, hardware related, and the software has little to no settings. Things like HDR pics are not possible.
ear piece is VERY muffled and some people say it is to hard to hear people over noises. No HAC on the phone so you cannot boost the ear piece like on the vibrant.
One person has a broken HDMI connection already, and other are reporting that the center connector plastic breaks easily.
battery life is completely random. worse than the vibrant.
Random shutdowns/reboots. No known reason yet. Also those few G2x owners are reporting that after loading about a dozen apps the phone starts to slow down really bad. Transitions from app/game to txt/phone call back to app/game can take 30+sec from one to the next.
GPS does seem to work, but a few people are reporting accuracy issues.
Lots of games are also incompatible with the phone architecture so any gameloft game or other major graphics intensive company has to port the game over to the Nvidia chipset and not a lot have done that yet.
I have been fallowing the G2x/x2 very closely to see how the phone is. Most people are happy with the phone and expect major improvements as newer os version come out that support the hardware better. But there are a few that really seems disappointed in the phone completely and a few have went back to there SGS phones.
I am going to wait about a month to see how the phone really takes off with a larger group of people before I jump in. Even look ate th SGS2 as an option.

i can't get over fact that people actually accept paying full price for faulty or subpar service or hardware. people like you make companies think it's ok to take shortcuts.

And it's people with responses like this that make this forum suck.
If you have no suggestion to help OP with sound quality....get the hell out of the thread.
OP....there is a setting in call setting (I believe) for hard of hearing that ups the volume significantly although I don't know if it reduces muffling at the other end.
Try hard resetting of not. Then definitely keep demanding another one til it works.

same issue here on my phone and my wife's EVO 3D

So close to giving up

This phone is awesome until i make or receive calls. I've tried numerous roms and modems that all result in the same result which is muffled voices that i often can't even understand. Seems that its when im talking to iphone users more than anything but its always there. My inspire was great with phone calls and really never had an issue understanding with any phone I've ever owned. Very frustrating and even happens on headset and Bluetooth devices. Any advice, anyone else experience this?

It very well may be a hardware issue. It happened to me on my last SGH. When I got a new phone, I haven't experienced the issue.
Try getting a replacement with whoever you bought the phone from. I had my phone replaced via hardware warranty and not insurance, so I got it for free.

That's probably what I'll try. I bought it over the phone with at&t so I'm sure they will want me to send it in since they aren't selling the sgsII over the counter here in austin (they are pushing the skyrocket). Sucks to be without a phone for a week or so!

You'll keep your current phone until they mail you the replacement. Then you'll pack your old phone into the box and ship it off. Make sure you've flashed back to stock and removed any trace of root because if you don't you'll lose warranty.

It should be pretty easy to make a claim on faulty hardware when you do it online and send it in, I haven't had any issues with call quality or anything so I'd guess it's a hardware issue
also I've done this before, except I did it with insurance claim, and I'm pretty sure they sent it with like FedEx overnight shipping too so you wouldn't really be waiting either

I would rather have a refund than a phone someone already used and broke. I buy new, I expect new.
refurbs are often times just a new phone that they cannot sell as new because it was opened. No scratches or damages but its still new.
Refurbished phones right now are basically still new phones. Most of the refurbished phones were phones bought brand new and returned within the 30 day free-exchange period. Some people didnt like it and a lot of people returned it for the Skyrocket... so AT&T has to resell the phones as refurbished even though there was nothing wrong with it at all. So now is the time to buy a refurbished phone.
I got my Dad one last week and he got it on Thursday. Its completely brand new. Not a scratch or anything on it. He got it for $9.99 and its perfect.
of all the refurbs I ever received from AT&T, all of them looked new.
I was up to 4 Captivate refurbs last year and they all looked brand new.
Interesting, not having any call issues with my phone.

Note RETURN HELP!!!!!!!!

Any HELP WOULD be greatly appreciate!!!!
4 days ago me and my wife bought notes. I recently discovered today that some spots on my phone do not work with the s pen. So i decided i need to take it back and exchange for a new one. But right before taking the phone back my phone was dropped and received hardly noticeable dents/scratches on the phones side on the metal. You have to be shown most likely before you even realize it has dents/scratches.
Will i still be able to return it or hope they just dont notice it?
Thanks for your feedback!!

Was the purchase made at a corporate or dealer store, or ordered online? It'll be inspected at a corporate store, probably not inspected at a dealer store, and if it was an online purchase, the warranty department will try to get you to put a hold on a credit card till yours is shipped back because they seem to try hard as hell to not do their job. At all. You might be able to appeal to the manager of that store to let you swap it. Can you post pics of the "damage"?
Thanx for the quick response and to answer ur question. Yes it was at corporate store. But i don't want to return it just want to exchange it.

Yeah, I got that much. It shouldn't be a problem if the damage isn't too noticeable, but it's iffy. There's a certain amount of discretion given to managers so you may luck out. Please post pics when you can...I'll try my best to give you an honest evaluation of your chances.
Actually hold on a sec ill get some

Safest way to do this is.......exchange for different color.dont tell them about defect it had.then they will blame on u. because u droped it.
Let's wait for the pics before we make any call like that. I say that as a current AT&T RSC and former third-party sales rep.
best bet is do the return over the phone if possible. call them and they will send you a device, on reciept of the new phone you will mail the defective one back. i have had the same problem as you with dropping a phone right before exchanging it and it worked out ok. good luck!

Not exactly the best way. If the damage is too extensive, or a grumpy person inspects the phone when they receive it, his account will be charge for the full price of a phone, and there's not much you can do about it without a lot of hassle.
The best thing for him to do is post pics on here of the damage, because we have many AT&T employees on here who could probably make a fair assessment of the damage based on AT&T's stipulations, as I'm sure they've had to deal with returns like this before.
That being said, to the OP: you should be fine unless the case is deformed or there is a huge scratch through the paint. I once returned my old Captivate due to a faulty external speaker, and i had scraped the paint off of the front speaker grill so it was silver, and I had a gouge on one of the corners that was still noticeable but I had smoothed out with a little very fine grained sandpaper followed by steel wool. Sanding it out will probably not work for you on the chrome-ish border of the Note however.

Could you maybe get one without a light reflection directly on the damage? It's a little hard to tell how bad that is. Your best bet either way is probably to go into an AT&T store, and see what they think about getting it replaced. If you have a device service center in your area, they can do an exchange on the spot for some devices, depending if they have it in stock.
The Note's too new. DSCs won't have any in stock and the only reasonable alternative is to exchange it in store.
As was said, if you can get a few more pics that don't focus directly on the damage, it might give us a better idea of what we're looking at.
This same thing happened to my phone and I never even dropped it. Right in the same exact corner. I pull it out of my pocket one day and bam the silver paint is gone.

Yeah, it happens to me where they cant hear me but Ive self tested by calling my other phones and i cant get it to replicate on any of those devices? Im thinking it may be related to Verizon service. So far its only one specific person that is having trouble hearing me on her Gnex.
Just did a self test with my HTC Evo LTE and the DNA and I can hear myself just fine on both devices. One on sprint and the other on Verizon. So i really dont know where the issue lies.
Edit* im thinking its the calibration on the Mic itself. If i moved the phone away from my face like an inch it was really quiet for a second until it starting picking up my voice and then when i moved it back to my face like normal it was super loud and then quieted down. Im assuming this is due to software and htc will release an update to correct this and better calibrate the mic
Crystal clear on mine

Your set is defective (as was mine) and you need to return it.
In a strange way it is nice to know that I did not receive the one and only defective set.
I have no idea but I'd guess it is a hardware speaker issue.
