hello,
since the ROM is CM7 based settings allow to map the search-key to a custom application. this works in general, but the real problem is that it overrides every application's mapping to the search key.
for exmaple using searching the MPD library with MPdroid (mpd control client) is impossible because you need to press the search key when in 'library tab' to search for a song, but that instead opens my previously mapped custom application.
i hope anyone knows a trick to solve this problem.
thanks and greets
stefan
I think it's meant to be like this unfortunately. Like how a camera shutter button would always, always launch its app, despite probably having a context sensitive function.
I know of no fix for you, sorry.

a pitty but thanks.. at least i figured something out:
my problem is Go Launcher Ex related. with Zeam or ADW Launcher i don't have to map the search key explicit to google search, because they it's already in the home app, allowing other activitys to catch the search-key.
may be i should contact the developer of Go Launcher EX?!

Hi,
I've asked and searched, but found no answers yet...
I've a HTC Sensation and a few days ago i did a long press on the search button (bottom right). A pop up asked me what application to launch, i choose google voice and tick the case by default. I would like to come back on this choice...
Is there a way to modify which application or function is launched by default with a hardware button?
Thanks
You can go to your applications and clear defaults for google voice if you want to make the choice.

Where did the voice search shortcut go? It would have been nice if a long press on the recent apps button brought up voice search. When I'm driving, I want to be able to "call home", or " "navigate to Best Buy". I tried to create a shortcut, but the voice search is not a app or widget, so I have no easy way to get there without multiple steps.

I noticed this too :/ I use the Dragon Go! assistant app and it has the same problem.. The quickest way to get to it is to use the google search widget. It's voice button gets you straight to it.

Yes, that's what I've been doing. Just wish there was a voice search only widget so I could put it on my home screen and not clutter it up, or a long press on the useless recent apps button.
Also, where did the Sound Hound app go? I can create a shortcut, but if I go to the apps area, it's not there! Tried to uninstall and reinstall market Sound Hound and you can't! Total garbage!

Soundhound is under Music now.
found a workaround
I've been looking for this shortcut (soundhound) and a couple others that seemed to disappear from the all apps drawer. The program is listed as installed, but you can't start it easily! This is what I found posted:

I modded mine to use the focus button on the camera (half press of the camera button). Whenever you're not in the camera app, hold it at half press, and voice actions pops up. I'm putting it into a zip right now, link to follow.
I'm sending ian in here to help u all out, he make a key remmaping the focus button to voice actions
Ok, after a long (LONG) day. I've got the zip, and I've managed to get it uploaded. This just makes the focus key (half press of the camera button), act as the search key, outside of the camera app. Hope you like it. Thank ticklemepinks appropriately for getting me to post this

There's a way to bring back the "Voice Search" shortcut. I have it on my dock right now.
Someone at AndroidCentral created a thread about it, but since I don't have that many posts right now to send you guys the link, here are the instructions:
1) Download "QuickShortcutMaker" from the Play Store.
2) Launch QuickShorcutMaster.
3) Do a search for "Voice Search" and you'll get a list of Voice Search Activities.
4) Select the one that has "RecognitionActivity" in the description.
5) Select OK.
6) The "Voice Search" shortcut should now appear on your Home screen.

Thanks for posting this, but since it's not an apk, and I don't think it's a kernel file, I don't actually know what I'm supposed to do with this zip. For the record, I tried changing the extension to apk and that didn't allow it to be installed. My evo is a stock, unrooted one at present.

You have to flash the file via custom recovery. Not something you can accomplish completely stock.

Ah, okay, I just got the phone yesterday and haven't installed any custom recovery yet. I should probably get on that. I ended up with an evo3d on 1.50, and therefore wasn't able to take advantage of such niceties. Thanks for letting me know.
You you possibly map it to a long press of the recent apps key? That would be more practical, think the half press of the camera key would happen too easily.

Well then your problems are solved.
But I'm sure the vast majority of people want it back to the way we became used to it.
I won't be using S Voice a whole lot, and would rather repurpose my home key double click to something useful - such as recent apps/multitasking (as this would be much faster than holding home down). Is there a mod for this?
Also, I'd like to double click home to wake phone and unlock screen - any mods for this?
I'm on Omega v6.0, just flashed it.
Also, I'd like to do something about the wake-up delay. When pressing power or home to wake the screen up, there's a wait of a good half a second - I want it instantaneous, like my old phone was.
Any ideas?
Bump.
Afaik this delay is caused by waking up from deep sleep. There isnt much you can do, unless you want to force your phone to stay awake it will drain the battery quickly, though.
Try apex or nova launcher..
For multitasking try "wave launcher".not an ordinary launcher, check market
Editr try gesture launcher
Edit 2: or dock4droid also cool 4 multitasking

Home2 shortcut in the market is.pretty useful.for key shortcuts like double click home or double click search key. Check it out

Home2 Shortcut seems like it should work (if and only if S Voice is disabled). If you have Nova Launcher installed, task switching is one of the shortcuts Nova has (so within Home2 Shortcut when you choose the app you'd like to be run, choose "Shortcut->Nova->Task Switcher"). If you don't use Nova as your normal launcher, I might be concerned about whether this causes Nova to be loaded into memory--this is a very simple test, but I can't do it because Nova is my launcher so it's already in memory.
The above technique has two disadvantages: you lose the ability to press "home" when you're already at the launcher (it does nothing), and there's an added delay before opening the launcher. I mitigate this delay by setting the double-tap time to a fast setting.
Another idea I had that might work:
- Uninstall S Voice (I think you can also rename the .apk to .apkbackup).
- Install a task-switching app (there's a very simple one on the market but it's not free--it just triggers normal Android task switching)
- Decompile the task-switching app
- Change the app namespace to S Voice's namespace
- Recompile and install the modified app.
This might make double-home-tap automatically trigger task switching without the disadvantages that come with using Home2 Shortcut. Unfortunately, I haven't yet decompiled/recompiled an app, so I probably can't give this a try until the weekend.
Edit: If technique 2 works and we want to share it as a mod, our only choice is to rewrite the app. There's no way we can condone pirating somebody's paid app.

Multitask Shortcut. Perhaps there are other apps that do this, but I haven't looked.
But it's still at least 2 button press. I'm lazy, so I'll continue with "wave launcher" that's just a swipe over screen and all your selected apps appear.

Apologies if this has been asked before - I was not able to find another thread asking or answering this.
I think it would be really cool to be able to assign the long press shortcut functions of the volume up and down keys (when the device is locked). Right now they link to the camera (for me, useful) and the memo app (for me, not so useful). Personally, I'd like to link to launching google now voice input - seems like it would be the next best thing to what the moto x has with waking from sleep by voice and executing a command.
Has anyone looked in to it at all? Ideas on how to accomplish this on a device with root maybe?
If you're rooted I'm pretty sure the app G2 Xposed Settings allows you to change the buttons. Have to be rooted with Xposed framework installed.

Awesome! That works a treat.
Looks like Google Search launches in non-voice mode if selected with this. I made a quick app that just acts as a shortcut into Google Search voice, attached here.

Oh man, thanks so much for this shortcut! I was just trying to figure this out!
It seemed to me to be a massive oversight that the shortcut key could only be used to open apps & not perform actions within apps such as use as a camera shutter key.
With a bit of playing around with tasker, auto input & tasker app factory I now have something that works for me as a camera shutter key. This obviously opens up many other possibilities.
My question is has anyone else tried anything similar & would anyone mind trying the attached app? I'm still learning with tasker so I'd like to know if the created app would function as a standalone for people who don't have tasker or autoinput installed.
To test once installed select the app as the shortcut key setting then open the stock camera app & press the shortcut key.
Thanks in advance to anyone that trys it.

Wow, that's really good. It could be fantastic using that key to use Now on tap without the virtual navigation bar
Edit: I've just try it with the camera app and is not working to me
Thanks for the feedback. I've not actually used the now on tap function yet but unless Elephone change how you can assign the button this seems like the best method for making it do what you want. Tasker's really versatile but I'm still learning so I know a lot of the stuff I do is a bit clunky. Personally I want it to be multi function so when the camera's open it's the shutter button but when it's not then I can use it for media control i.e. press once for pause, twice for skip track, 3 times for back track.

That probably means you do require the autoinput plugin then. I've been playing around with now on tap & have managed to get it to work when you click on the app button I created but when it is assigned to the shortcut key it doesn't. It definitely needs the autoinput plugin with the method I've used. Going to make some posts in Tasker threads when I get chance to see if I can get suggestions on better ways to do it.

Did this move on any further? I wanted to give it a go, but the Google drive link isn't working.
As you say, massive oversight on the part of Elephone. I hadn't even thought of trying to use tasker.

Unfortunately not. The issue with exporting tasker things to an app is to install it on another phone you require all of the appropriate plugins used within the task. It's certainly possible to do things with the shortcut key using tasker but I found most of the solutions convoluted for such a simple result so gave up on it.
Thanks for the reply. It's a shame to hear it was so convoluted to achieve, but thanks for trying.
I've been using Camera Zoom FX, if you set the exposure to +3 it gives comparable results to the stock camera app. The advantage of this app is that you can use the volume rocker as a hardware button to take pictures via an optional setting. There is a free version of this app as well I think, but I don't know its limitations. I think the functionality exists in some other camera apps too, including Google Camera, the thing is that most apps seem to have a noticeable reduction in quality vs the stock app.
I know it's not quite the result you were aiming for, but I hope that the information is of some use to somebody.
