In the month that I've used the Lapdock 100, I've come across a few things that keep it from being a truly outstanding product.
First of all there are a few differences between the Lapdock 100 and the 500. (As shown below)

I'm planning on getting the 500 as well since I need it mostly for work to connect to an external monitor. But in the meantime these are my observations of problems in the Lapdock 100 I've encountered...
01-File Manager
When trying to access photos using the file manager on the lapdock, they are presented in detail view only. there is no way to change it to show thumbnails. There is a thumbnail view to the right side of the file manager but it only showcases one photo (the one currently selected).
02-Keyboard
When you stroke a couple of keys the cursor jumps out of the line you are typing into another area of the screen, or it jumps into a previous word. if you are not looking, you end up with jumbled words since the typing was inserted elsewhere.
Now i do not know if its because my palm is reseting on the trackpad or not, but if so, Motorola needs to figure out a fix.
03-Web search is slower
While web searching, the loading of each page feels like you are on dial-up. Although this can be attributed to the fact that Webtop is linux on top of linux on top of Android (linux) or that firefox is (in my opnion) slow anyway. Either way I would love to be able to see other browsers available or at least the ones on your phone pushed over to the webtop.
04-Gallery and viewing of images in Webtop
Speaking of push over to webtop,
Unable to view photos or the gallery in webtop mode. One still has to use the phone and expand it.
05-Drap and drop files, images
Webtop does not have the capability to drag and drop, lets say photos, into an application. Such as facebook, twitter etc.
06-Touchscreen
Yeah Yeah i know, but i had to throw it in there, hopefully it will be introduced in version 5-6 of the dock.
07-Netflix orientation
If the photon is docked to the Lapdock and inserted into the holding bin in the rear of the unit, and if you try to see a netflix movie, it appears upside down.
Temp fix is to place the phone on the desk right side up, but not something once can do on a limited space such as a plane.
08-Images/movies look grainy / Increase resolution
Currently Webtop mimics whats shown on the phone in programs such as netflix. This results in a somewhat grainy picture/movies due to the 720p being blown up on the bigger lcd.
09-Citrix for Webtop (personal use) or any Remote Desktop Protocol client in Webtop
Currently Citrix only works with corporate outfits. So I can't connect remotely to my home pc or laptop. Citrix for Android only works on the phone and also does not connect to a personal pc. Then you have GoToMyPC which is made by Citrix but only works for apple products. and needs a java enabled browser which the one in webtop is not.
We really need a remote access app that works in webtop, (or at least as mentioned in #3) above have the one on the phone pushed over to webtop.
10-Pull tab of the connecting cable
Mototola needs to come up with a stronger pull tab for the cable. After a months time of inserting and pulling on the tab to get the cable out, it finally gave way and came off the cable.
11-Reserved
12-Reserved
As I encounter more issues myself or from others I'll add them to the list.
I assume most of these can be fix via a software update, or replacing webtop with Ubuntoo, etc. Currently the stock webtop version is WT-1.2.0-160 (but the developers are up to version 1.2.0-174 as per the leak in the other thread), the same applies to the OS in general. Hopefully some of these can be fix in new update (or later like ICS) and be an OTA or pass along here in xda.
TS
Thanks for the info. As far as webtop goes, if 1.2.0-174 is stable I'll be updating UbunTop & WebTop+.
Expanding lapdock 100 features:
-webcam: most likely all that's needed is to find a webcam with a chipset that matches the one in the 500
-3.5mm headphone jack: simple mod (tap the line-out in the dac chip)
-SDCard slot: simple mod
-VGA out: not sure about this one, would need a lapdock 100 for teardown
-Ethernet: most likely all that's needed is to find a 10/100 dongle with a chipset that matches the one in the 500
01-File Manager
04-Gallery and viewing of images in Webtop
05-Drap and drop files, images
Moto's eyecandy gui is to blame. Drag&drop and view modes are there but hidden. (look at WebTop+)
03-Web search is slower
Agreed. Firefox is not properly optimized for webtop. When optimized, it's performance is equal to entry level netbook
07-Netflix orientation
Solution here. Been running rotation enabled Netflix since Evo Desktop.
08-Images/movies look grainy / Increase resolution
You will get the same effect pushing a 720 signal to most TV's as LCD native resolution and video resolution vary rarely ever match. For example my Vizio LCD TV has a native resolution of 1366x768 and all 720/1080 looks grainy/soft
interesting, if only the 100 had the same functionality of the 500 I would enjoy the smaller screen more imo.

Yeah last we talked, I was going to do the Ubuntop mod, but got detained. Now with jokers leak, if 174 is stable like you mentioned then that would be great since it increases the 720 signal up to 1080.

If that leak pans out well, it should have upped the phone to 1028, so maybe it won't look so grainy on the Lapdock 100/500.

Those first will have to ran from mobile view, which works but it's a stretched view of your device display so it's visually lacking. The 3rd one does sound promising, I may take a look at that after I see what the new webtop is like with 4.0.4.
Have you tried running Teamviewer from the web login on the Firefox Browser? I am going to install, create an account and try this soon.
Edit to say I did login at Teamviewer.com and was able to control my PC through the Firefox Browser. I opened all of my computer programs without problems. I played some media files and the audio played on the PC (which was in the next room) but I could not hear the audio on my Lapdock.
How do you optimize Foxfire for use with Webtop?
Ethernet Works!

Confirmed the Ethernet theory here.
Plugged Linksys' USB300M USB Ethernet Adapter (Link was removed, look on Amazon for Cisco-Linksys USB Ethernet Adapter- It's only $28-$30) into the Lapdock 100 with Droid RAZR MAXX today. As soon as the ethernet cable was plugged into the adapter, my Razr MAXX produced a pop-up "Ethernet Connection" :victory:
Now to find a webcam that works.... :fingers-crossed:

Hi All,
My dream, one that I hope Android can help me fulfill is to hook my Galaxy S2 to a HDMI tv, fire up remote desktop and by using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, effectively have a full desktop available.
I am yet to try hooking up my phone to a tv as I am waiting for the MHL cable, but issues I envisage are the following:
1) When the screen is mirrored on the TV, the RDP program will not use the TVs display show 'full screen'. I have installed some RDP applications and they allow you to select the resolution so perhaps this will resolve the issue
2) Are there any RDP applications that allow bluetooth keyboard and mouse entry?
This is the hold grail for me!! Many a time I have stayed in a hotel for work or holiday and not had my laptop with me and wished for such a solution. Combine this with Wake On Lan and it's perfect!
I hope someone can help!
I can't believe i'm the only one that wants something like this to work!
RDP programs should just take any inputs from your phone and pass them onto the remote machine so BT kb/m should work ok IMO. Not sure about the mirroring but if it is fullscreen on the phone then maybe the MHL cable will upscale for the TV.

I'm waiting for the cable before I can try. In fact I would have had it by now but my girlfriend wants to buy some stuff for me for my bday and I believe she's already ordered it!
I should get mine tomorrow and I'll try it out.
Thanks! I'll check back on thread!
I've been doing some reading around and have found that BT keyboards and a mouse will work no problem.
I tried my MHL cable with the Android VNC viewer app and allows you to fit to screen but does not output at the tv's native res.
I have had similar experience with Remote RDP, it just mirrors the phone's native resolution. Hopefully this kind of thing will be supported soon, including internet browsing at 1080p.
Thanks guys, that sux!
I still haven't received my cable so I can't try for myself, but have you managed to make it work to a workable output on the TV?
would be interesting if we could port some parts from the atrix (webtop) over to this phone. I actually enjoyed that feature.

Perhaps, this kind of program may help to format the resolution?
Am I missing something? If you got a bt keyboard and bt mouse and the phone to tv hdmi, don't you have it all? Why would you need a remote desktop or vnc software?
Well, you'd have it all except for USB, which you might be able to live without.

If it could pump out the full Remote Desktop resolution then you will effectively have a full desktop through your phone rather than just have the phone's software capability.
Fair enough you can surf the web and play a video but what if I want to use full excel or Word, and multi-task like on a desktop.
I've still not received my cable so I don't know whether the browsing the net with the phone's browser is legible on a big screen.
In my earlier post I complete missed off the applications name - LCD Density - haven't tried and I don't know if it's compatible with the SGSII, but sounds like it changes the native resolution of the phone.
Try Splashtop as your vnc app it is the only one to my knowledge that can stream audio almost perfect and video pretty good over vnc and works like a charm on the atrix.
Did you find a good BT keyboard that works well with the Evo? I'd prefer one with a built in trackpad, as my goal is to use this on the road (ie, airports, trains, etc), and would like to have an all-in-one keyboard/mouse.
The one thing that I haven't had time to tinker with have been HDMI goggles that can give a virtual display. Has anyone tried these w/ the Evo's mini-HDMI output?
It looks like they finally fixed the issues with Splashtop HD and the 10.1. I want to know if anyone is using it and if so, how is it so far? I'm very close to buying it, but want to know for sure that it is working.
Splashtop Remote Desktop HD
"...** Validated for Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Asus Transformer, Motorola Xoom, Acer
Iconia Tab A500, Acer Picasso, LG G-Slate, and others **"
I saw that in the market this morning. I'm curious if when you access your PC, if it does like other remote desktop type apps and actually shows on my screen at home when I'm away. I'd have to remember to turn my display off, but leave my cpu on if that is the case I assume.
I have it. works fine. I see almost no difference between it and the non-hd version though. hopefully they add all the features they have on the ipad soon.
Does it take up the full tab screen? Does it still change the resolution on the pc?
Has to be some reason for hd version.

So it doesn't support higher resolutions? I'm trying to decide between this one and Remote Desktop Client. It has great reviews.
I own it. It has the option to scale the screen to match the tab, or set it to 1280x720 to fit the tab. Works great, provided the computer is both on and logged in.
Unfortunately, on headless servers the software is useless because the client software requires a user to bbe logged in and active. When an RDP session ends, the software shuts down automatically and prevents login through Splashtop.

I have a similar setup where that issue affects me. I also wish it could zoom if you did want to use a higher resolution.
It is very fast, you could watch a movie from local network fine but with a little bit of delay.

yes, it does support higher resolutions.
The resolutions are
800 x 600
1024 x 768
1280 x 720
Best fit to this device
Native of the computer
So basically it does any resolution if you choose native of the computer.
Is there anyway to zoom using this version?

Any recommendations for this app? I've been using VLC for the past while, is this better?
I use this type of app numerous times a day to get info off my companies servers as well as use our company data software.
I have used this for the past 5hrs and im impressed so far. Works well. Maybe a little lag once in a while...but im assuming that's from spotty 3g service (tethered to phone).
I got this app yesterday so I could stream live TV from windows media center on my desktop. The video was surprisingly smooth. I would say it ran pretty close to 30 fps with some fps hiccups from time to time. The audio was great as well.
I haven't tried using VLC but if you're looking to watch other things than video files, this app works great. Other remote desktop apps come nowhere close to the video and audio performance of this one.
Ever tried 2X ?

What makes this better than free one like 2X ? Really would like to know.
Also I found a hack that lets windows home edition work like a terminal server which is saweet!
Even lets you connect console and have more than two users just like terminal server.
EDIT: ah I see now 2x won't play video over rdp... Window is black in player
Splashtop doesn't use traditional remote desktop protocol, it uses its own streamer that you install on the computer/server. I've never seen regular remote desktop or vnc server/client stream this well, especially with videos.
I have no experience with 2x but no video or black video window on client/secondary monitor is usually due overlay issues. Try changing video player setting away from overlay.
What kind of upstream connection do you guys have? Splashtop HD works amazingly well on my local network, but once I try using remotely I find it's performance leaves something to be desired. It works OK, but is generally slow and I wouldn't even think of doing any audio or video with it. My upstream is capped to around 100 kb/s or maybe a little higher, so I suspect that may be the issue.
Does anybody know of a solution that works better with such bandwidth constraints. I'd like to be able to remote in on my tablet and from my computer at work.
Splashtop is great on a LAN, but not as good over the internet. My cable (comcast blast) upload is ~3.7 Mbps at home, and the DSL download at work is 3 Mbps. And even then watching videos is not good. The audio portion is fine, the video portion is about 3 frames per second and less.
For watching video over the internet, Plex or Playon should be better. With Plex, you can adjust for your bandwidth. I think Playon detects your upload and adjust accordingly.
I couldn't get Plex to detect my server over the internet to test on my Gtab 10.1, works on a regular computer browser so it's not a firewall issue. Playon works fine for streaming. But I suspect your 100kbps could be problematic.
So between LogMeIn Ignition, 2X, Remote Desktop Client, and Remote RDP, which do you all recommend?
I plan to use it for repairing/diagnosing software issues from my house instead of having people bring me their computers.
I'm (generally) not that interested in watching video via remote desktop of any sort. It would be nice if I could use spotify from work sometimes though. Mostly I just want to have access to my appications (not to mention unrestricted internet access) on my home computer.
I was thinking of the coolness factor of just having one device, a phone, to which you could connect an external display and have an extended desktop. I am not finding any reference to this on Android (only the MS Surface). From what I have been reading, and remember/understand (may be confused), Jelly Bean brought the ability for windowing apps. However, the apps have to be coded for the capability, unless you root your phone and installed an app that provided windowing for all apps. Also, I have not heard of the possibility of having an extended desktop in Android.
I would like to ask WHY? Why not have windowing and the ability for an extended desktop, on an external display? A bluetooth keyboard and mouse just follows. Does google have to play nice with the manufacturers that stand to loose from people only needing one device? Is there a reason I'm not thinking of? Most phones are fast enough for this these days.
At the turn of the century, I was running GPS software Deluo Routis on a Sony Vaio 505 Pentium 200Mhz laptop running Win98. The 2-D graphics were smooth even while playing mp3's through the car speakers. The mapping software showed the map clearly, and effectively gave me navigation. People have lost sight of how much you can do if you give up the bloat and bling.
Also, I am pretty confused with the merging of Android and Chrome. I never liked Java to begin with; my experience with it is in MS Windows, and it runs slow as molasses. I believe my phone would run much faster if they had not chosen Java. I understand this to be because you have an operating system running on top of another operating system. It just makes more sense to me to have less layers and run apps natively, for better performance. I thought maybe they chose Java for its level of security. Is the screening process for Google Play not foolproof enough?
I like the philosophy of Google better than Microsoft**, so if one of them is going to win, I hope it's Google. I'm hoping Google won't end up with a convoluted Android/Chrome operating system because Lawyers forced them to (the idea I get based on the latest news). I don't understand: do they want to keep their OS architecture simple, but are being forced to make the OS complex for different reasons?
**Apple doesn't even want to compete. They have never wanted to dominate, just make huge profits. Unless they break up the marriage of hardware and software, they won't win. Then again, if Samsung keeps dominating, there may not be much hardware diversity?
Oh, and my main question was: "Why not have windowing and the ability for an extended desktop?". Wouldn't that be a big deciding factor for anyone that wanted to simplify and just have one device?
Anybody? Tell me I'm crazy at least. There has to be a strategic reason, that Google does not introduce full windowing and extended desktop support.
Its coming eventually. though you could do it right now. Motorola tried something like this with their atrix lapdocks.

Can you do it right now with any android device having a video port?
Well lets look at how we could achieve this with todays technology.
Input:
Bluetooth Mouse & keyboard.
Output:
Wireless display with support for older displays using something like Chromecast.
Graphical User Interface:
A secondary Launcher/Application (Which could potentially see companies like MS & Canonical developing their own UI's and Charging for them if required).
Home & Office use with one device:
Home would be the default UI, but when your device has used NFC to log into the office it would automatically enable your Office profile/UI for a certain length of time (requiring you to log back in after a set time or manual log out via another NFC tap).
This would be very useful as it would enable you to take your "desktop" environment anywhere with you and connect to any HDTV with Wireless display/Chromecast support.
Applications:
So if like me you are finding your phone to become ever more a better solution to your digital needs and you only require your desktop for apps which work better with larger displays (Videos & certain games) you will find this very useful.
Games:
Now games could become ever more better as they could be controlled using standardised control inputs (game controllers could use standardised input methods allowing you to select any compatible controller to best suit your needs) or even a driving game could allow you to see the game on a HDTV yet be controlled with the accelerometer for steering and the right of the devices touch display would be the accelerator and the left of the display would be the brakes for example.
More Business Solutions:
If you could wirelessly connect to the office display then show a powerpoint style presentation that would be great because the very device which stores the file would also be your controller to move to the next/pevious slides.
Media:
Music could possibly be stored in the cloud so when your on the move you can listen to your music as many of us do now, but when connected to a large display it could utilise the large display and speakers to show a music video too!.
Photos could be viewed on the large screen and the next one to be displayed could be select on the device (allowing the use to avoid showing anyone pictures which they don't want other to see - ie: pitcures of you and your friends whilst your parents/grandparents are in the room...).
The TV Guide:
The TV Guide would become a very interactive thing which allows you to see what is available on other TV channels without other people in the room being limited to viewing the content they are trying to watch in a small box in the corner of the display...
These are just some ideas of what is possible, but I know that you could do so much more with this and with 64-bit technology coming to many mobile devices soon that will make it so much easier for devices to process all of this data at once without any serious lag!.
I would love to see a group of developers on XDA team up on an open desktop (secondary) launcher to run alongside the users primary (phone) launcher. if there was a project like this with an open framework to develop apps for I'd be happy to start developing apps for that or separate UI's to run alongside my current (Phone/Android) apps UI's.
Edit:
Also remember that this could be utilised in other ways too eg:: connecting your device to your car and your device could deliver your navigation & music to your vehicles display whilst getting important traffic/weather news using your devices network connection!.
Isn't this exactly what the Ubuntu phone intends to do or have I got the wrong idea?

Yes, but with Android already having a large ecosystem it would make a lot of sense to build upon that.
Chromecast is not "open" to third party apps. http://www.minyanville.com/sectors/...eeds-to-Tread-Lightly-With/8/28/2013/id/51502
Do they have a displayport version of Chromecast? *cough*
quote from: http://www.tested.com/tech/set-top-boxes/457036-testing-google-chromecast/
"Chromecast is also not a particularly good desktop mirroring option, either. It actually can't do full desktop mirroring, and instead works solely with the Chrome browser. In beta right now is Chrome tab streaming, which sends to Chromecast everything that can be rendered in a single Chrome tab, including web pages, flash embeds, and even full-screen MKV video files if you have VLC installed. I like that Chrome tab streaming works independently of what's showing on your laptop or desktop's screen--like with YouTube and Netflix, you can multi-task and switch to other tabs or windows while one tab is being streamed. The only thing that matters is the window size and screen resolution. Chromecast will automatically scale the aspect ratio of your window to fill up your TV screen, adding black bars on the sides to avoid stretching. A full-screen resolution of 1440x900 looked good on a large 1080p TV, but streaming from a 2560x1600 monitor at full-screen made the text unreadable on my 70" TV."
Wow... I thought only displayport was capable of 2560x1600 (edit: hdmi v1.3 brought this). Even if I hook it up to my 2560x1600 monitor, it won't really display anything but entertainment. Chromecast doesn't seem to be a way to have a monitor, to use your Android phone as a PC replacement.
AllCast !!!
http://www.geek.com/android/chromecast-reject-becomes-allcast-public-beta-now-available-1578674/
However, I still need to add some kind of wifi enabled device to my 30" lcd monitor (like with chromecast). Really, I don't mind a cable connection from my phone to my monitor, if that was an option. If Google continues to be closed like this, then I would go for Ubuntu phone.
Displayport:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MyDP#SlimPort
Any phones have this besides the Google Nexus 4? Actually, I'm not getting a new phone until I know what the hell will happen with Android / Chrome OS
Quote from: http://www.tested.com/tech/android/457205-mhl-vs-slimport/
"SlimPort's support for the DisplayPort standard--specifically Mobility DisplayPort--means it can output video at the same 4K resolution as MHL, though not via HDMI (yet, anyway). And here SlimPort hasn't really made good on its potential, yet; though it's based on the flexible DisplayPort standard, the only SlimPort adapters currently available are for VGA and HDMI connectors. The upshot is that you won't be plugging a Nexus 7 into a 1440p DisplayPort computer monitor anytime soon." http://www.slimportconnect.com/

It could start with mirroring a primary display, but gradually result in mirroring something that a GPU has rendered for a secondary display.

I tried that myself with my previous Galaxy S4 (i9500), It was a great dock and when I connected my wireless KB & Mouse USB dongle & connected the HDMI to my PC monitor it was a good experience when doing things like playing GTA3 on the bigger screen (it was better than the windows version in some ways).
But the device just needed a separate home screen UI to be output to the PC screen to look perfect and to work better with the KB & Mouse input type.
It shouldn't be too difficult to make a UI that simply changes the size of some buttons to a smaller size, enabling more widgets to fit on the home screen and if they could simply force the apps to run in either windowed or full screen that would enable better multi-tasking, then the browsers would just need a small update to detect if the device is running in Desktop Mode if so, then simply zoom out of the page a little to emulate the desktop browser experience.
Just a few ideas... If Google's Android team are reading this, I would recommend that you get that dock to experiment with for future Android builds.
Especially now that OS' like Ubuntu Phone are looking at going down this road of the one device fits all computational needs.
Rather than creating a new thread I thought that it would appropriate to bring this topic back up after the recent announcements that several OEM's have made, that they will be releasing desktops with Android as their Primary/Secondary OS.
I hope that this pushes Google into creating a dedicated desktop UI in the future.

I received mine yesterday and so far pretty impressed. It's much faster and smoother than my old Rockchip V8 based box. I have run into a couple of issues, though.
XBMC is built in [fairly recent alpha build - can't remember exactly], but appears to have fairly serious problems with a/v sync currently. As this is a very new SoC, that's not too surprising. I'm sure later releases will improve support for the s802. My previous media player of choice, Serviio > BubbleUPnP > MXPlayer suffers a similar, although less noticeable, a/v sync issue.
For now, the best workaround I have found is to browse the CIFS shares on my NAS with ES File Explorer and open MKV files from there with BS Player -- this works perfectly: 1080p is perfectly smooth, it supports DTS and all additional audio and subtitle tracks, and has no a/v sync issues.
The second problem I'm facing is inability to install any paid apps from Play Store - all paid apps I've tried so far fail with the error "Couldn't install on USB storage or SD Card". Free apps install fine. I've rooted the device but still the same. I've tried backing up the apps in question on my phone using TiBackp the copying them over, but TiBackup on the S89 fails to restore them. I've only Googled this briefly but it looks like it may have something to do with the /mnt/asec location that paid apps use.
It's pretty critical to me that I get my purchased PowerAmp working, so I'll spend a bit more time at the weekend trying to fix it. Any suggestions welcome.

More reviews is coming:
First Impressions:
The top of the S89 reminds me of a record. The Spiral grooves give it a nice look and feel.
The three rubber feet on the bottom give me confindence that it won't be sliding off the shelf by wires.
Initially I was a bit put off by the cirlcular design of the Tronsmart Vega S89. I wondered what it would look like with the mess of wires coming out of it.
It doesn't bother me at all! Even with all the wires plugged in I don't see them unless I'm looking for them.
Spacing the ports around the back perimeter really helps to keep the cables from becoming tangled.
Front left to right on the back there are the following ports:
-Power Button
-2 Full Size USB Ports
-AV port(with hidden reset button)
-DC Power Port
-10/100 Ethernet RJ45 port
-Full Size HDMI port
-Optical SPDIF audio port
-Micro-SD Card Slot
-Micro-USB OTG port
What's in the Box?
In addition to the Tronsmart Vega S89 Elite, there are several other accessories included in the box.
The power adapter, micro-usb cable, av cable, hdmi cable, and remote control come packed neatly in the box.
The 5V 3A power adapter ensures that there will be no power supply issues.
The included infrared remote is a nice addition. It works quite well with both the stock launcher and XBMC.
It has dedicate navigation buttons for Home, Back, and Menu.
There are also colored shortcut buttons that will launch 4K Player, Music, Browser, and an APP button that doesn't seem to launch anything.
Above the shortcut buttons is a power button. It puts the S89 to sleep, or at the very least turns off the display.
It even has a mouse mode(controlled by arrow keys)
The included micro-usb cable is a must if you want to use the OTG port.
The male micro-usb end is just a little longer to make up for the plastic casing. A normal micro-usb plug will fit, but may be loose or fall out.

First Boot:
After finding some AAA batteries for the remote I plugged the power in and was ready to start the S89.
45 seconds after pressing the power button on the s89 I was greeted by the stock launcher.
I explored the stock launcher and visted the different sections.
Online Video

I worked my way over to Settings.
I quickly setup my Wifi on the Network page.
Display allows you change between resolutions, hide the status bar, adjust the overscan/underscan,
Advanced brings you Miracast settings and is also where you change the audio output.
Other has a button to bring you to the stock android settings page.
At this point I decided to plug in my usb keyboard and loaded up the Play Store.
I installed a bunch of benchmarking apps, and updated MX Player as well as Netflix. It was all quite smooth and nothing missing that I noticed.
External Drives:
The S89 had no problem mounting a 1TB usb hard drive with a FAT32 partition. No issues with R/W.
The other drive I have is a 500GB with an NTFS partition. This drive could be read, but not written.
I tested NTFS again by formating a flash drive. Yet again the S89 failed to write to it.
Benchmarks:
-Antutu
The S89 scored a whopping 30699 in Antutu.
-Quadrant Standard
A respectable score of 5956 was obtained.
-Vellamo
Here the S89 scored 1584 in HTML5 and 866 in METAL tests.
-GFXBench
The Mali 450 does well in GFXBench.
Multimedia Playback:
I tested a bunch of different video files. I'd say the s802 in the Tronsmart Vega S89 easily rivals RK3188 based boxes/sticks.
H.265 has been a topic of discussion since it's listed on the box, I couldn't get any h.265 files to play well in any player.
-4K Player
Decent for many files, but most of my HD files have AC3, DD, or DTS....which this player doesn't play.
-Netflix
I tested Netflix for quite a while.
Quality seems to be the standard 480p that Netflix sends through the app. On wifi I didn't have any buffering, but at several times the screen was a bit pixelated.
Over ethernet the pixelation never showed and quality was at 480p the whole time.
Subtitles and Audio/Video sync is good.
I have no doubts that Tronsmart Vega S89 could playback 720p or 1080p streams, but we really need Netflix to add those options to the app.
-HBO Go
Another popular streaming app. It works well. No Audio/Video sync issues.
-Crackle
I was not able to play anything in Crackle. Every time I clicked an item I was brought back to the main menu.
-MX Player
I needed to reinstall MX Player to make it work. After enabling H/W+ most files are played with no issues at all.
DTS and AC3 audio wouldn't play so I install the custom codecs to play them. Now I was able to software decode DTS and AC3.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... ?t=2156254
-Youtube
Works well.
And Finally...
-XBMC
Works Beautifully! I'd say the experience is right on par with my HTPC running XBMC.
As usual XBMC is generally the best player when hardware decoding is available.
DTS and AC3 are software decoded, unless you change the audio output to passthrough.
Menu's are fast and fluid.
Local playback was very good. No sync issues at all.
Network playback was a bit of hit or miss. At least we can adjust the audio sync.
Downloading the same file to the S89 resulted in good audio sync.
Most plugins I tried worked well. I took advantage of xbmchub.com services and installed the hub wizard for easy setup.
I managed to freeze the S89 while streaming a movie and browsing the plugins. I haven't been able to replicate the problem yet.
XBMC on the S89 is pretty good. There are always going to be some issues when a device is first released.
Conclusion:
The Tronsmart Vega S89 is a great value for fast box that can play XBMC. I frequently hop from android sticks/box to my HTPC for various tasks. With the S89 running XBMC so nicely I don't have to do that.
In general the S89 makes a great addition to any HDTV.
Things that could be changed:
-Add a Shutdown Menu when you press the power button on the S89.(Leave the remote sleep button alone)
-Fix audio sync issues when streaming HD videos in XBMC.

I was able to use the APK Downloader Chrome plugin with my Google account and my Nexus 5 device ID to get the PowerAmp and BubbleUPnP unlocker APKs. They sideloaded just fine and work for now, but PowerAmp in particular has a habit of detecting that something isn't right with the license app and making you uninstall / reinstall it to make it work again -- this often happens when I flash a new ROM on my Nexus 5 and restore it from TiBackup / Nandroid Manager -- so I suspect it's only a matter of time before it breaks itself on my S89 as well...

Contacted with factory, they said they are working on the fix for google play store paid app download problem. and cpu frequency problem.
they probably release a new firmware this week, we will see.
Hi,
I'm very interested by this product.
But, I'm not sure this android box is able to play movies stored in my NAS (MKV with DTS audio) with XMBC.
Can you confirm is compatible ?
Thx by advance
Compatible, yes. But as I mentioned previously, there are some A/V sync issues with XBMC at the moment that seem particularly apparent when playing high bitrate MKV files from network locations.
The version of XBMC is a 14.0 alpha, which isn't even into nightly release state yet -- the latest stable version is still 12, with 13 looking very close but still officially in beta. Looks like this version was compiled from source by the Tronsmart guys for this box's firmware.
BS Player is flawless however. I'm using that for now until XBMC improves.

Thx for your answer, so it's not a hardware issue, but a software XBMC issue ?
I read on freaktab they are some others isues :
- S802 chipset instead of S802-H for some boxes
- Payed Apps don't work
- Ethernet port issues
Is it true ?
I just found this, intersting, the A/V Sync problem can be solved like this:
http://www.armtvtech.com/armtvtechforum/viewtopic.php?f=558&t=74069
Wow, that actually worked!
Bit of messing about trying to get it to run via a .sh script till I gave up, plugged a USB keyboard in and manually navigated through the filesystem to chmod the files.
Now XBMC asked for super user on the next run, and the sync issues are fixed.
Word of warning if you manually mount CIFS shares -- whatever you do, don't be tempted to replace the dodgy Chinese superuser app that VRoot installs with SuperSU, cause it breaks CIFS mounting...
Eventually discovered I was able to mount cifs and ls contents as su from the terminal, but other users apart from root were unable to see any contents. Googled for a while to find a solution, but ended up doing a complete unroot / reroot via the VRoot method and it works again.
...is finally into Windows Phone marketplace. But currently (at the moment I`m writing this) is a closed beta, available for those who was fast enough to sing yourself up on this form here (expired for now).
I was not able to participate in the right time so I have no access to the beta. But the people who have says that the main problem is that the app produces no sound at all so you can`t listen music with it right now and there was also mentioned problems with HD video, people saying there was graphical artifacts and glitches when playing 30 megabytes 1080p video (with no sound of cource).
Anyway, I want to being able to test it myself so if you`re a participated tester and your WP device has support for an SD-cards and that card is installed, please PM me.

I was able to install it via the "Download and install manually" link, putting the file on the SD card, and then going Store -> AppBar -> Install local apps (on the phone). I backed it on Kickstarter though, so maybe that's why it worked for me? In any case, I'm not sure it's worth the space right now; there's no audio!

There's no audio cause they didn't integrate with SystemMediaTransportControls.
In fact, i think they just compiled the windows 8 version on ARM, changed the UI a bit and called it an app.

Tried to install it that way, app has appeared into list of the apps I "can" install, after clicking Install all, I got Installing... and then Permissions error.
Well, today's build has audio but only in the foreground, and not integrated with the universal audio controls. Still a long way to go...

There is no xap for this app. There is only appx (you can see on the marketplace page that app is only supports Windows Phone 8.1). I have a content of that appx but this is outdated version. I can`t even reproduce an appx because I`m running Windows 7 x86 (with xap packets I can, it`s easier).
So if anyone would share an appx it will be great. If you`re one of the testers, PM me for instructions how to made one.

Have !
not impressed
how long have we been waited for this much celebrated application? it doesn't even run in the background, the second I leave the app the music stops playing, not to mention its very buggy such as playing music stutters
what is all this fuss about vlc media player?
thumbs down
It's (as the "v" part of the name implies) primarily a video player; presumably they didn't prioritize having a background agent for something where the main use case is foreground. I imagine they'll add the background agent when that makes it to the top of the priority list for this still *very much in-development* application...
It can be used both for streaming media and for locally-stored media, and it can decode just about anything. For file formats that the built-in player doesn't support (of which there are many), there was anguish for a long time about things like subtitles not showing or not synching properly with video or audio. VLC, at least on the PC, is really good about handling things like that correctly.
As a side note, have you considered the fact that you're badmouthing an early, not-yet-public beta (if it's even beta-stage yet) of a free and open source application port to a platform that its compiler couldn't even target when the project was started? For <REDACTED> sake, if you don't want to use it, nobody is forcing you to. If you actually want to know what VLC is all about, maybe you should try actually using a released version of it... Do you even have it *installed* on your PC, let alone ever use it? Who is this "we" that you claim have been waiting for this app? I'm having a really hard time believing you backed the Kickstarter...
Seriously, it's not even close to release quality; that's why it *isn't released yet*. This version doesn't mean anything except that they got the bloody thing to *compile*, which is a pretty major accomplishment when you consider it's all written in MSVC-incompatible native code and that when they started the port, GCC didn't know how to target Win32/ARM *or* how to compile C++/CX or anything else WinRT-related. The way I see it, it's pretty impressive that the app works at all, for all that I was expecting it a bit sooner than this if it was going to arrive at all.

MKV is supported via Xbox Video on the phone side. On Windows 10, MKV is built into the OS, no codecs needed.
I heard they were adding it, but didn't think it was available already. The phone can decode MKV out of the box? Does that include any subtitle support?

MKV aka Matroska (Russian Матрёшка, the wooden doll with the small dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other) is a media container format, no codecs (i.e. coders/decoders) needed at all, just a proper parser.
And MKV container is NOT supported out of the box, according to Microsoft.

They only teased Windows Media Player playlist with an MKV file and some music in FLAC. Blogs say that the formats will be "fully supported", but we will see the outcome of it in the Windows 10 [Consumer Preview?] launch come roughly January 21st.
In my last post, I meant to say no codec pack needed, which most people use to add misc. containers, codecs, and the rest of that decode/demux mess (which I tend to do, because it can be daunting to do by hand for one or two formats I might need.)
