...is finally into Windows Phone marketplace. But currently (at the moment I`m writing this) is a closed beta, available for those who was fast enough to sing yourself up on this form here (expired for now).
I was not able to participate in the right time so I have no access to the beta. But the people who have says that the main problem is that the app produces no sound at all so you can`t listen music with it right now and there was also mentioned problems with HD video, people saying there was graphical artifacts and glitches when playing 30 megabytes 1080p video (with no sound of cource).
Anyway, I want to being able to test it myself so if you`re a participated tester and your WP device has support for an SD-cards and that card is installed, please PM me.
no sound for lumia 520
I was able to install it via the "Download and install manually" link, putting the file on the SD card, and then going Store -> AppBar -> Install local apps (on the phone). I backed it on Kickstarter though, so maybe that's why it worked for me? In any case, I'm not sure it's worth the space right now; there's no audio!

There's no audio cause they didn't integrate with SystemMediaTransportControls.
In fact, i think they just compiled the windows 8 version on ARM, changed the UI a bit and called it an app.

Tried to install it that way, app has appeared into list of the apps I "can" install, after clicking Install all, I got Installing... and then Permissions error.
Well, today's build has audio but only in the foreground, and not integrated with the universal audio controls. Still a long way to go...

There is no xap for this app. There is only appx (you can see on the marketplace page that app is only supports Windows Phone 8.1). I have a content of that appx but this is outdated version. I can`t even reproduce an appx because I`m running Windows 7 x86 (with xap packets I can, it`s easier).
So if anyone would share an appx it will be great. If you`re one of the testers, PM me for instructions how to made one.

Have !
not impressed
how long have we been waited for this much celebrated application? it doesn't even run in the background, the second I leave the app the music stops playing, not to mention its very buggy such as playing music stutters
what is all this fuss about vlc media player?
thumbs down
It's (as the "v" part of the name implies) primarily a video player; presumably they didn't prioritize having a background agent for something where the main use case is foreground. I imagine they'll add the background agent when that makes it to the top of the priority list for this still *very much in-development* application...
It can be used both for streaming media and for locally-stored media, and it can decode just about anything. For file formats that the built-in player doesn't support (of which there are many), there was anguish for a long time about things like subtitles not showing or not synching properly with video or audio. VLC, at least on the PC, is really good about handling things like that correctly.
As a side note, have you considered the fact that you're badmouthing an early, not-yet-public beta (if it's even beta-stage yet) of a free and open source application port to a platform that its compiler couldn't even target when the project was started? For <REDACTED> sake, if you don't want to use it, nobody is forcing you to. If you actually want to know what VLC is all about, maybe you should try actually using a released version of it... Do you even have it *installed* on your PC, let alone ever use it? Who is this "we" that you claim have been waiting for this app? I'm having a really hard time believing you backed the Kickstarter...
Seriously, it's not even close to release quality; that's why it *isn't released yet*. This version doesn't mean anything except that they got the bloody thing to *compile*, which is a pretty major accomplishment when you consider it's all written in MSVC-incompatible native code and that when they started the port, GCC didn't know how to target Win32/ARM *or* how to compile C++/CX or anything else WinRT-related. The way I see it, it's pretty impressive that the app works at all, for all that I was expecting it a bit sooner than this if it was going to arrive at all.
Is MKV supported on Windows Phone?
Haven't yet tried, though if it supported on Win8 PCs it should be supported on WP8 as well.

MKV is supported via Xbox Video on the phone side. On Windows 10, MKV is built into the OS, no codecs needed.
I heard they were adding it, but didn't think it was available already. The phone can decode MKV out of the box? Does that include any subtitle support?

MKV aka Matroska (Russian Матрёшка, the wooden doll with the small dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other) is a media container format, no codecs (i.e. coders/decoders) needed at all, just a proper parser.
And MKV container is NOT supported out of the box, according to Microsoft.

You need to frequent Windows Central more...
Xbox Video on the latest update will accept the MKV container, but I have no clue about subtitle support.

They only teased Windows Media Player playlist with an MKV file and some music in FLAC. Blogs say that the formats will be "fully supported", but we will see the outcome of it in the Windows 10 [Consumer Preview?] launch come roughly January 21st.
In my last post, I meant to say no codec pack needed, which most people use to add misc. containers, codecs, and the rest of that decode/demux mess (which I tend to do, because it can be daunting to do by hand for one or two formats I might need.)

Performance wise they're about the same, but Audiogalaxy has a better ui giving a it a cooler look and smooth feel
Doesnt help
INSTALLED SETUP YADDA YADDA YADDA doesnt recognize alot of music files in my music folder for example i have 10 files from ace frehley only took 6 as recognized left out other 4 im sure its a good app but until it can recognize all songs not worth the trouble uninstalling
I've been using Audiogalaxy for a couple months now. I love it. I have almost 200 gigs of music, and its really convenient to have it with me anywhere. I'll get the occasional skip on 3G or edge, but its absolutely perfect on wifi.

Why would it need to recognise the songs ???
It takes every music that you tell it too and allow you to listen to it anywhere while your computer is on and connected to the internet
I'm using it with 120GB of music and it even work with messed up names and japanese ones...

But is there any way to have a cache/offline listening?
Open source?
I was wondering if this is an open source project. I was thinking of implementing some more codecs to the app or have custom bit rate support based on the type of network you're using.
Is there something similar to audiogalaxy for UNIX system?
i have 70ish gigs of music, i have no need for a mp3 player or ipod now, this app is amazing, klyentel are you taking donations? let me know.

edna is good but it always cut out half way through songs, even when I was on same wifi my server is on. edna dot sorceforge dot com I think.
now I use gnump3d. Very easy to setup and run as a service at boot. streams over http so you browse your library with your phone browser and it generates an m3u playlist when you click a song, or you can play all songs in a directory. browser opens up whatever ur music player is for steaming. Lets you require a password for base dir, all dirs, or none. Personally I don't use a pw just run it on an uncommon port and block all traffic other than my phone's ip with iptables or another firewall.
Great work!
By far the best interface out there... Impressive web application as well. Easily one of my favorite apps and I've only been using it for about 10 minutes. Setup was a breeze less than 2 minutes and I'm streaming my library to my phone. I would kill for a similar app that streamed my movies! TALKING MURDER HERE!
Keep up the good work!
Can it RANDOM play a playlist ?

In the month that I've used the Lapdock 100, I've come across a few things that keep it from being a truly outstanding product.
First of all there are a few differences between the Lapdock 100 and the 500. (As shown below)
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

}
I'm planning on getting the 500 as well since I need it mostly for work to connect to an external monitor. But in the meantime these are my observations of problems in the Lapdock 100 I've encountered...
01-File Manager
When trying to access photos using the file manager on the lapdock, they are presented in detail view only. there is no way to change it to show thumbnails. There is a thumbnail view to the right side of the file manager but it only showcases one photo (the one currently selected).
02-Keyboard
When you stroke a couple of keys the cursor jumps out of the line you are typing into another area of the screen, or it jumps into a previous word. if you are not looking, you end up with jumbled words since the typing was inserted elsewhere.
Now i do not know if its because my palm is reseting on the trackpad or not, but if so, Motorola needs to figure out a fix.
03-Web search is slower
While web searching, the loading of each page feels like you are on dial-up. Although this can be attributed to the fact that Webtop is linux on top of linux on top of Android (linux) or that firefox is (in my opnion) slow anyway. Either way I would love to be able to see other browsers available or at least the ones on your phone pushed over to the webtop.
04-Gallery and viewing of images in Webtop
Speaking of push over to webtop,
Unable to view photos or the gallery in webtop mode. One still has to use the phone and expand it.
05-Drap and drop files, images
Webtop does not have the capability to drag and drop, lets say photos, into an application. Such as facebook, twitter etc.
06-Touchscreen
Yeah Yeah i know, but i had to throw it in there, hopefully it will be introduced in version 5-6 of the dock.
07-Netflix orientation
If the photon is docked to the Lapdock and inserted into the holding bin in the rear of the unit, and if you try to see a netflix movie, it appears upside down.
Temp fix is to place the phone on the desk right side up, but not something once can do on a limited space such as a plane.
08-Images/movies look grainy / Increase resolution
Currently Webtop mimics whats shown on the phone in programs such as netflix. This results in a somewhat grainy picture/movies due to the 720p being blown up on the bigger lcd.
09-Citrix for Webtop (personal use) or any Remote Desktop Protocol client in Webtop
Currently Citrix only works with corporate outfits. So I can't connect remotely to my home pc or laptop. Citrix for Android only works on the phone and also does not connect to a personal pc. Then you have GoToMyPC which is made by Citrix but only works for apple products. and needs a java enabled browser which the one in webtop is not.
We really need a remote access app that works in webtop, (or at least as mentioned in #3) above have the one on the phone pushed over to webtop.
10-Pull tab of the connecting cable
Mototola needs to come up with a stronger pull tab for the cable. After a months time of inserting and pulling on the tab to get the cable out, it finally gave way and came off the cable.
11-Reserved
12-Reserved
As I encounter more issues myself or from others I'll add them to the list.
I assume most of these can be fix via a software update, or replacing webtop with Ubuntoo, etc. Currently the stock webtop version is WT-1.2.0-160 (but the developers are up to version 1.2.0-174 as per the leak in the other thread), the same applies to the OS in general. Hopefully some of these can be fix in new update (or later like ICS) and be an OTA or pass along here in xda.
TS
Thanks for the info. As far as webtop goes, if 1.2.0-174 is stable I'll be updating UbunTop & WebTop+.
Expanding lapdock 100 features:
-webcam: most likely all that's needed is to find a webcam with a chipset that matches the one in the 500
-3.5mm headphone jack: simple mod (tap the line-out in the dac chip)
-SDCard slot: simple mod
-VGA out: not sure about this one, would need a lapdock 100 for teardown
-Ethernet: most likely all that's needed is to find a 10/100 dongle with a chipset that matches the one in the 500
01-File Manager
04-Gallery and viewing of images in Webtop
05-Drap and drop files, images
Moto's eyecandy gui is to blame. Drag&drop and view modes are there but hidden. (look at WebTop+)
03-Web search is slower
Agreed. Firefox is not properly optimized for webtop. When optimized, it's performance is equal to entry level netbook
07-Netflix orientation
Solution here. Been running rotation enabled Netflix since Evo Desktop.
08-Images/movies look grainy / Increase resolution
You will get the same effect pushing a 720 signal to most TV's as LCD native resolution and video resolution vary rarely ever match. For example my Vizio LCD TV has a native resolution of 1366x768 and all 720/1080 looks grainy/soft
interesting, if only the 100 had the same functionality of the 500 I would enjoy the smaller screen more imo.

Yeah last we talked, I was going to do the Ubuntop mod, but got detained. Now with jokers leak, if 174 is stable like you mentioned then that would be great since it increases the 720 signal up to 1080.

Those first will have to ran from mobile view, which works but it's a stretched view of your device display so it's visually lacking. The 3rd one does sound promising, I may take a look at that after I see what the new webtop is like with 4.0.4.
Have you tried running Teamviewer from the web login on the Firefox Browser? I am going to install, create an account and try this soon.
Edit to say I did login at Teamviewer.com and was able to control my PC through the Firefox Browser. I opened all of my computer programs without problems. I played some media files and the audio played on the PC (which was in the next room) but I could not hear the audio on my Lapdock.
How do you optimize Foxfire for use with Webtop?

Confirmed the Ethernet theory here.
Plugged Linksys' USB300M USB Ethernet Adapter (Link was removed, look on Amazon for Cisco-Linksys USB Ethernet Adapter- It's only $28-$30) into the Lapdock 100 with Droid RAZR MAXX today. As soon as the ethernet cable was plugged into the adapter, my Razr MAXX produced a pop-up "Ethernet Connection" :victory:
Now to find a webcam that works.... :fingers-crossed:
Has anyone else seen the press release about Samsungs new android compatible optical drive. It looks like it could be the thing that allows me to ditch the laptop once and for all but one thing concerns me. The press release says:
" Through its AV connectivity mode, the drive is also ideal for Tablet PC users that want to view or hear content from a disc."
It looks to me like it won't be a fully functioning r/w DVD drive. Calling it AV mode implies it will only allow you to view media files, and not actually use it looked a proper drive.
Any views?

Sounds extremely old-fashioned and unnecessary. I havnt used optical drives for... I think its 5 years now.
Flashdrives is far superior in every. single. way.
But you can't rip a CD or DVD with a flash drive. When I buy music I still want a physical medium because I don't like being beholden to music sites. Also, living in a rural area my broadband is too slow for streaming video, so DVD is still format of choice for buying films.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
I always download a copy of whatever I buy. If, for some very strange reason, I need to rip something, I got 3 laptops that can do that just fine :d
I cant stand the sound of a DVD reader, the constant disc-swapping, the bulkiness of the dvd discs, the risk of getting scratches on it rendering the dvd unusable (not that I have ever scratched a single dvd/cd though, but I know a lot of people who have lol).
Ok so some people (like you) still uses cd/dvd discs but... I really cant see why you would want that on a tablet? It kinda defeats half the purpose of a tablet - mobility.
Ever tried to move a cd/dvd reader while its working (not talking portable ones here)? It will most certainly lose focus on what it was reading. And even portables will lose focus if you give them a slight tap, or move them too fast...
A flashdrive, on the other hand, can be thrown into a wall while working, without losing focus (If we ignore the chance of it coming lose and just focus on the impact force).
Aaaanyyyyywayyyyy... This wasnt ment to be a rant-post, even though it turned out like that... Sorry, I'll leave this thread now and leave it to people who are interested in old-fashioned media :d
I refer back to the fact that rural broadband is useless for downloading copies of anything, I wouldn't use it on the move (I would want it just to rip copies of things).
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I can't remember when was the last time I actually use the DVD-drive.. I have PC running windows 7 with the latest super multi DVD drive...but... I haven't really use it these days.. Everything these days uses USB memory stick, I use it in my car, use it for my TV, use it for my PC and use it for my TF101..
BUT.... still it's a great news if our TF101 can run this external DVD-drive somehow.. it added the feature and functionality to this already awesome TF101.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium HD app
I agree about not using optical disks as much anymore. There are only two things left that I use my DVD drive for. Ripping my movies when I buy a new disk so I can keep them all on my NAS, and burning photo DVDs for my clients (wedding photography).
Unfortunately, neither of those things will be changing until something better than current media formats comes around. Movies still come on disk (unless you want to by choked by excessive DRM) and optical discs are still more stable for long term storage than flash drives. Given that, I can understand why some folks might still want an optical drive option. I could hook the drive up to my tablet and demo the images direct from the DVD I'm about to give a client.
Pffffft...

- Click "Save As" to save your WAV/MP3 folder with the special name
This is not officially supported on any US device, but you can get the nightly build of VLC here:

I can confirm that it does run and does play videos. I was hoping maybe we could share settings that actually work here.
So far, without changing any settings, it has played any 1080p HD videos I have thrown at it flawlessly. Decoding of DTS audio is also working. There has been no lag when playing full HD, even with apps such as Chrome still open in the background.
Thank you. Working great on my N10. Best player thus far even though it's still in "beta". Especially because it can play DTS audio. BSPlayer could also, but it would always crash and restart my 1080p videos in SW mode.
Works great for me even streaming of my networked files plays fine and is all in sync, glad I moved up from my old Xoom

Is anyone able to play large 1080p films from a network source via wifi smoothly.
Trying to watch a ~35GB mkv movie is a bit jerky and im assuming its wifi speeds if playing these sources from internal or usb works fine. Im a bit confused by this as its connected to the 5GHz channel of my N speed router. So that should transfer data quickly enough.

Try 2.4ghz. 5ghz freq is known to be worse the further away from the router you are. I'm running off of two 2.4ghz radios on my router and not having any issues with large 1080p_BluRay_x264 movies

Try installing Skifta from the market and stream via DLNA...seems to handle buffering far better than just playing the raw file from a CIFS mount.
Skifta will let you choose which installed media player you want to use, it's not a player itself, just a DLNA client.
Thanks guys will try those tonight. Im only in the room next to the router and thought it should be fine but will try both your suggestions

I have a kitten, hmm...
Well switched to 2.4ghz which has enabled 720p to play properly, but no joy with 1080
Must be the network speed as it can play it fine from a usb. Got my hopes up when i saw it supported 5GHz sad times that its actually worse than 2.4. Hopefully this will get better with updates
I'm in the US and could not download it. So I just spoofed the Play store into thinking I was in Australia. Worked like a charm. VLC works great.
Some one in here gave a link to a location for downloading the apk. But, if by some chance that does not work for some, I can email the apk if you PM me your address. Just throwing that out there if any one needs a hand.

In most cases where there is significant congestion in the 2.4ghz range, this is not going to be true.
2.4 ghz is extremely congested in most neighborhoods, so using 5ghz will net you stability and better average bandwidth for that reason alone, even with the slightly greater attenuation of 5ghz signal at range.
1080p video will bitrate-spike and exceed the bandwidth of a non-40mhz wide N channel. You really don't want to run wide channel mode on 2.4 ghz if you wish to continue good relations with your neighbors, so you will have to use 5ghz for that if you want to send real 1080p video.
However, there is a lot of variation on how well vendors implement the 802.11n standard, some people put their wifi antennas right next to walls and other sources of echo, configure incorrectly, etc. YMMV
I would say this is normally true, but not with the nexus! Got a better video from using 2.4GHz, cant explain it!
VLC is crashing on my tablet, any idea why?
Can it play files from SMB shares?
I've tried downloading the one linked in OP, but it just crashes, won't open at all.

My dad's recently got himself a GPS (cheapy from ebay) which is running window CE, I'm trying to get it to play some films but really not having any luck, never used windows CE before there's is a media player already but wondered if this can be update to maybe play the files? Just really looking for some advice. Thanks Dave

Several players for Windows (Embedded) CE available, ex.
TCPMP (both freeware and payware version)
Fortuna ( a rewrite of TCPMP )
Shinco ( a rewrite of TCPMP )
CEPlayer
Windows Media Player (esp. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=556270 )
Theirs development all was stopped years ago!
Probably you'll have to install a DirectX-driver (ex. GAPI for HPC) too. And be aware, the aspect ratio of a GPS-device's screen resolution
320x240
480x234
480x272
640x480
800x480
never matches that of a MPEG-2 video
720×576 PAL MPEG-2 a little bit wider than 4:3, 16:9 anamorph
720×480 NTSC MPEG-2 a little bit wider than 4:3, 16:9 anamorph
704×576 PAL MPEG-2 4:3, 16:9 anamorph
704×480 NTSC MPEG-2 4:3, 16:9 anamorph
hence you always firstly have to convert a given MPEG-2 video.
Hi,
There is one Video player which I found the best.
Search google for voPlayer for WinCE.
I'm using it and it works great.

You simply copy the extracted folder (see attachments) onto resident memory of your device.

I have one of the newer Ford F150 OEM'ish looking radios. [chinese]
Think mine has 2 OS's
The GPS runs separately from units proprietary wince. The GUI for radio/cd/dvd part looks totally unlike anything i've ever seen.
Currently, running the media player embedded in the iGo Primo GPS software. I'd like a "better" media center, but don't wanna risk f**king somthing up. I dunno where an installed app would even appear

Your unit indeed consists of 2 IC mainboards: one holding and running WinCE / navigation software ( iGO ), the other is the MCU. Hence the unit has 2 SD-card slots, one for GPS maps, one for music/video.
If you install a WindowsCE app, it is copied either onto unit's internal storage memory ( Flash Disk ) or onto unit's external storage memory ( SD-card ). Depends on your choice.
BTW: Never heard before that iGO comes with a media player embedded.

I haven't mess'd with CE in 10 years....and have never used iGo. So this new radios full of "all kinds of unknowns"
I'd just like to have a full featured Media-Player
YOUR file: Un-zipped and placed "folder" [un-opened] on root of SD [the music one - not GPS]. Explorer can see the folder, which contains .exe
Not seeing anything in GUI menu that shows anything new. I did then, dbl clicked on the .exe.....nothing happened
I dunno......maybe you can't enter or mess with root ?
Yes, you can have an iGO skin (ex. Dimka skin) that lets you run an external application such as a mediaplayer. Obviously OEM has utilised such a skin. If I know it right then in Dimka skin the additional menu of start of external programs is opened by long click on button Menu in a navigation mode ...
You probably will see your issue isn't Windows CE related, but iGO. Ask the iGO specialists for help.
