[Q] Active Sync on 3 different Galaxy SII phones broken - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HI all,
I'm an email admin and Android user. I'm currently using a Nexus S 4g (I know wrong forum) and I have around 20 Iphones (I know wrong forum) connected to our corporate exchange server via Active sync. I've never had any problem with connecting a recent android phone to our exchange server, until this week. This week I was handed by 3 different people a Galaxy SII to connect to our exchange server, (2007, OWA, ISA). 2 are AT&T and one is Sprint 4g (I know wrong forum ).
Every on of them does the exact same thing when configuring the account. It makes it through the account adding screens with no problem and then drops you into the inbox. The refresh bar pops up from the bottom of the screen, disappears, pops up again.... but no emails ever download. It nukes the battery within a few minutes with constant refreshes. If you power cycle the phone it will calm down a little, with the constant refreshes, but will never display email. I know it's connected to the server, sending an email from the phone works, folders sync, etc... but email never displays.
At first I looked at the number of emails and was trying to figure out what was wrong with the account but after I've had 3 in as many days do the exact same thing on 2 different carriers I'm thinking it has to be the Galaxy SII.
I've seen several other people have random problems with exchange syncing and this phone but nothing that's quite like this.
Can anyone point me in a direction to troubleshoot this phone?

You can try another Exchange app in the phone to try to see if the problem is due to software or hardware.
Also it would be great to know if the Samsung Galaxy SII you're used are stock ROM (version?), if they're rooted or if the user has modified it in some way (custom ROM?).
Samsung Galaxy S II comes with a lot of Samsung propietary apps, so I would bet that if all phones are stock, untouched, the problem might be on Samsung apps...

I have had problems with my S2 for corporate network for ages. Try TouchDown for Exchange it works flawlessly with exchange. Also a workaround is by configuring a connection/account of type Exchange (not active exchange) which works fine through an app or something and then configuring the ActiveExchange account it'll work that's how i make it work

[Q] Native Email stops receiving. Restart required.

Hi everyone,
I'm a Galaxy S user but my brother has just bought a Galaxy Ace which he likes a lot except for one big problem.
I helped him configure the native email app for 2 POP3 accounts. Everythign works ok, it's set to check for emails on both acocunts every 10 minutes. But after a while it stops receiving. Even if you go in the one of the accounts and do a refresh nothing comes in.
Power off and restart the phone and email works again... for a while.
Anyone else had this problem?
Mark.

Hey!
Dose it happens in home, with wifi? If yes, go to wifi settings, go advanced and look in WIFI SLEEP POLICY. Put there in NEVER. Try this, maybe it helping.
CHEERS!
Thanks casiocas,
That wouldn't really be an option as it'll just suck the power. Anyway, he's now given up and installed K9 email client which seems to be OK at the moment. Time will tell!
We like to use stock apps where possible.

Hey!
You can put it to SLEEP NEVER(its just not going to sleep, if the screen is off. I mean, if you home, but if you go out, you can turn wifi off), but you can always turn off WIFI, if you want. I just want to know dose its is in OFF mode(in wifi settings) or WHEN SCREEN IS OFF!
CHEERS!

[Q] Gtalk/push Gmail/etc, barely functional

So, ever since the OTA to gingerbread, my Atrix will not stay logged into Gtalk. This was my first clue that something was up, so I kept track of the post-OTA issues until I could form a theory. Here is the list of issues:
1) Gtalk won't stay logged in.
2) Push email to the Gmail app is delayed, sometimes by as much as an hour
3) The "Digital Clock Widget" from the market lags behind the phone clock, sometimes as long as a half hour.
4) Incoming MMS's will immediately sever my data connection, whether I'm tethered or browsing on the phone itself. The transmit/receive arrows under the "H" just disappear until the phone has finished receiving the MMS.
All these issues, coupled with the failure of the Haptic feedback and vibration for notifications got me a new (refurbed) device. I was hoping that I would be good to go, but no such luck. Gingerbread was already installed on the replacement unit and Haptic feedback and all that worked, but I still had a problem with constant gtalk logouts, email push, etc.
EDIT: Another noteworthy problem is when logged into Gmail from my notebook or trying to use Gtalk on the tablet while tethered to the Atrix, Gtalk says "connection unavailable" on the tablet and the chat side bar inside of Gmail's browser window says "Oops, you are not logged in as invisible because another device that is logged in does not support invisibility", or something similar to that.
"Fine, I'll get a new SIM", I thought. Again, a bust. Problem no fixied. On to the next idea. I went ahead and dusted off my Craptivate and Odin'd a leaked OEM Gingerbread rom onto it, figuring I could at least see if it was my Google account that was fubar'd or not. So far, so good. For over a week now, Gtalk and Gmail push are operating as designed on the Cappy with no delays and no logouts, and the Digital Clock Widget stays current with the phone clock. I haven't really paid any attention to the data connection/mms issue, as that is a somewhat secondary problem, probably related to the other issues.
So my main theory is, my motoblur account is screwed for some reason, which I don't get, because it was just fine before Gingerbread came along. I tossed out the idea that it was an issue with hardware or software, just based on the fact that both phones are exhibiting exactly the same behavior, minus the issue with Haptic on the replacement phone.
It's driving me crazy using the Craptivate, but the issues on the Atrix are unacceptable to me, so use it I will. I have no desire to sit on the phone with tech support again, unless no solution can be found here. I'd rather chew on broken glass. Anybody have any ideas for me to go with?
Oh, and on an interesting side note, the guy at the AT&T store I went to for the replacement SIM said his Atrix was having the same issue with push on his corporate AT&T email account. At least in that respect, I know I'm not the only one affected.

[Q] (SGSII - CM9) Sleeping, WiFi, Google servers and push

Sorry, I cannot post the links since I'm such a noob, XD. In approximately 7 messages I'll edit with the full links.
------
Hi XDA! I'm the proud owner of a SGSII since Sept 2011. A problem I've had since day one is that Whatsapp, Gmail, FB, etc don't behave in a "push" manner, meaning I'll often get the notifications half an hour after they should have arrived.
Recently, I rooted and updated my phone to Samsung's ICS rom and noticed that, when I woke up in the morning, I wouldn't have any notifications until I started toying with the phone for about 5 minutes, in which moment I would be flooded by emails, FB messages, whatsapp messages, etc.
Hoping to kill this unhealthy trend I upgraded to CM9 and flashed the latest radio through recovery. My problem now is that the moment the phone switches the screen off, it seems to lose connection with google servers. (I interpret that when the WiFi and network icons are colored grey instead of blue is because they have no connection to google servers, please correct me if I'm wrong.). Of course, my original problem stands but it is now aggravated by the fact that this happens every time I turn the screen off. WiFi remains on, but without server connection, as in this screenshot: i.imgur.com/SkLrQ.png
My ICS version is 4.0.4, I'm using the 22-04 CM nightly, I usually update it once a week more or less and will do it tonight to rule this out. I guess if it were a CM problem there would be more awareness about this. More info about my phone: i.imgur.com/y6avq.png
I should note that my WiFi sleep policy is turned to never switch off WiFi. Also, I leave my phone charging every night before going to bed. WiFi is always on while discharging but I still don't get the e-mails: i.imgur.com/0W37j.png
Please XDA, is this a phone problem? a rom problem? a router problem? Your help will be very much appreciated.
Don't hesitate to ask if you need more data for diagnostics.

So, what exactly is your problem?
1. Push notifications take several minutes to appear on your phone:
That's quite normal. Push does not mean that you will have no delay.
2. Google service (Gmail) does not sync onm your phone:
Have you wiped cache partition and Dalvik cache?
Have you cleared Gmail app data?
Have you done a factory reset?
Maybe you need to remove your current Google account and re-create it afterwards.
Good luck !
Thanks for answering!!

No, the problem is that every time the screen goes out while on WiFi, the phone will lose connection with the Google Servers. This doesn't delay the e-mails and messages from coming in, it directly prevents it. Messages won't come through until I've toyed with the phone for several minutes after waking it up

Yes, I wiped all the caches and cleared Gmail data. Since this post, I updated to latest CM Nightly, Siyah Kernel and XXLPS radio (which I believe is the latest). Still no improvement.
Will keep trying variables and update with results. Thanks for your help.
I have a similar issue with my Android devices as well, pretty sure it's not related to the internet since I've tested 3 phones (stock nexus one, stock galaxy nexus and custom SanFran) on 3 different wifi networks and they all seem to lose google server connection every 16 minutes.
going into *#*#8255#*#* i can see heartbeat timeouts every 16 minutes whenever the phones are connected to wifi network.
the only thing i haven't tried is to sign into another google account, will try that sometime in the future but not sure if that's going to help.
shudnt be wifi problem. i am using whatsapp on 2G / 3G and having same problem as well. Only started when moved over to ICS. Did not seem to have this problem when in GB.
You sure you don't have wifi sleep modus on while screen is off?
It's in the settings somewhere.. (maybe by battery and maybe by connections/wifi?)

Exchange bug?

Set up my works Exchange account on the S3 and suspected it was causing high battery drain.
Selected some 'sleep time' from within the application and then also selected Manual Update so I could save battery. It appears manual doesn't change anything though as my mail still comes through unless I deactivated the account completely?
Anyone else have this issue.?

That wouldn't be a bug in Exchange causing the issue.
It is, most likely, because ActiveSync, which is what Exchange uses to communicate with your phone, is a server-side "push" technology. This means that your phone, most likely, has WiFi and/or your Internet services "always on" to accommodate ActiveSync. ActiveSync doesn't work like Blackberry where the client-side does all of the control/communication (pull technology). It is all done server-side, which means that the phone has to always have an Internet connection, either through WiFi or the phone Internet services, to be ready to accept incoming information from ActiveSync.
Thanks for the reply - so the option to manually retrieve mail is pointless then as it going to get pushed whether I want it or not?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
After posting my response, I decided that it could be a little bit clearer, so here goes.
Blackberry (BES specifically), IMAP, POP3, SMTP, etc, the client side, in this case the phone, is in control of all of the message synchronization. Meaning that every n number of minutes/hours/days it opens up an Internet connection and says, "Do you have anything for me? If so, send it now." That's client-side pull technology.
ActiveSync, on the other hand, the server (in this case the Exchange Client Access Server), sends out the info, via AvtiveSync, every time something new comes in to your Exchange mailbox. This happens "real-time" rather than every n number of minutes. This means that the client side, in this case the phone, must have an "always on" Internet connection, either via WiFi or the phone's Internet service, to accept these "real-time" updates. This is server-side push technology.
Server-side push technology, by its very nature, causes the client-side, in this case the phone, to consume more battery since the WiFi and Internet "radios" must always be on.
I hope that this makes more sense than my last post.

Correct. The server is the controlling "party" in the paired relationship.

I ran the same tests on the S3. I'm syncing 3 exchange accounts.
Email exchange service drains the battery really fast ...
Nearly half of the battery is used (battery stats) for this process only [47%].
My battery cannot last:
- on 3G networks, more than 5 hours.
- on WiFi, it goes up to 8 hours.
I used to sync the same exchange accounts on 2 other Samsung devices: Captivate Glide and Galaxy Note - both running Android 2.3.5/2.3.6
=> no issues with the sync services draining the battery.
IMHO, this is not only linked to the Activesync technology, it is also linked android release and the way email exchange service is made/configured (or runs).
There might be some tweaks or possible patch for this service...
But don't know what or where, yet ...
My 2 cents ...
The phone keeps at least one connection to Google open at all times (C2DM push) when it has a network connection.
Open and half-open connections do not really cause high battery drain since your device can (and will) go to lower power states and switch the network to fast dormancy which is a sort of periodic polling for new data.
A scientific article about the topic can be found here: Link (PDF)
The relevant part is in footnote 4 of paragraph 4.1.2
In fact, even at IDLE, a handset periodically wakes up to listen for incoming packets on the paging
channel. If a downlink packet happens to arrive between two paging occasions, it will be delayed until the next paging occasion

Additionally that IMAP is poll-only is not entirely correct. While IMAP itself is usually only used as PULL (client requests, receives, closes connection) many servers support the IMAP IDLE mode (client requests, receives, waits for new data, receives, waits, ...) which is a real push technology.
(Technically it differs from Google's C2DM which in fact is HTTP (Comet) long-polling and not true pushing)
I've noticed a high battery drain on Exchange too, even if the account was disabled. It's unrelated to how the phone is connected (Wifi,3G,2G) and _seems_ to get lower when no data connection is open.
It will only go away if the account is removed and seems to caused by the app waking up all the time even if not needed. Thirdparty apps and stock Android do not seem to have this issue - at least my S1 did not.
(I haven't tested on the S3 with a non-stock app yet)
Btw my Exchange server is a patched Z-Push IMAP/SMTP<->Activesync converter from their trunk with Exchange2007 capabilities.
Yes, there HAS to be a bug in the exchange app on this phone.
I got my phone a month ago, and have had no issues with battery drain and high data usage with Exchange what so ever. Until this weekend.
All of a sudden, with no change in the settings at all, my battery all of a sudden just lasted 5-6 hours. It got really warm too. Then after a day or so, I got a message that my monthly limit of data was reached. I didn´t believe this at all since I had more than 500 MB left on my limit the day before.
But when I checked the settings, I was shocked to see that this was true indeed. And it was "exchange services" that caused this. It had downloaded about 600-700 MBs over this short period, thus (of course) causing my battery to drain quickly, and I will now get a nice bill from my phone company for over use of data
As I said. No changes to the settings were done. This happened over night. And of course this has to be a bug in the app, not a server-issue. No one else in my company, as far as I have heard, had had this issue (yet), but after googling I can see that this actually is a problem for many, with different phone brands.
It seems like google has got complains about this, but there has not been released a fix, which is totally unacceptable. I now have had to turn of my mail sync to prevent the data usage to go insane, and my phone to get warm, slow and quick battery drain.
If this isn´t fixed quickly, I will uninstall Exchange services from my phone (have root), and install Touchdown instead.
Here is the problem discussed:
productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/mobile/tCA92MdBTmc
- but with no solution.
Issue was resolved by deleting account and reinstalling it. But I had to do it twice before it worked.
I also cleand the Exchange Services App with the tool SD Maid before I reinstalled my account the second time.
My battery is back to normal, and no more crazy data usage.

[Q] Google Talk app keep-alive failed on 3G / unable to get notification

This have been bugging me for very long. It not only affects my Google Talk, it also affects my Whatsapp, preventing them from getting messages on time.
Note that this only happens on 3G. I have no problem with Wifi.
I am able to get Google Talk / Whatsapp to push messages and get it's notification when I first booted my phone. The push stops when the phone is being idled for more than 5 to 15 minutes. I do not know why this happen, but when I look at *#*#8255#*#*, all timers listed froze and when I pressed on the "Send heartbeat to server" it does nothing (The heartbeat counter suppose to increase).
I tried to start the Google Talk app, and it started off with a fresh login (Means it logout while it was in idle state).
The two devices are, Stock DXLP9 unrooted and Lastest version of SlimROM with everything unchanged. No task manager involve on both affected devices.
I'm not sure if it's a carrier issue.
Is there anyone here that can help me solve this mystery?
I got the same problem here.
It's surelly related with some power saving thing.
I'm using WanamLite 12 with Siyah kernel 3.3.2.
My workaround was open terminal emulator and let it ping Google.com forever. It keeps the connection alive then I can receive msgs on IM+ Pro in real time.

I have tried your term emulator method and it does not work for me.
I have recently realised something that is very different that I did comparing to my friends.
They have "Automatically sign in" and "Automatic away status" checked in Google Talk.
I am currently trying this out to see if it works for me.
I will update again.
I have exactly the same problem.
I don't have a GSII, but a Sensation and a Galaxy Nexus.
After a while with screen off phone disconnect from google servers.. On galaxy nexus the bars change to grey color.
I did everithing.. nothing changed...
After Months, i get what it is the problem. The Operator..
Simply, switch from H3G, to Vodafone... The miracle happens
Google talk always connected, push notification of gmal, whatsapp and FB are instantaneous..
I found my own solution and it works for me.
I'm not sure if this works for others but here's what I've did.
Bought Tasker
Load Application GTalk, Wait 10 seconds, Go Home
Repeat this every 10 minutes.
I am not worrying at all as this consume very little battery.
I do see quite a number of wakelocks, but my battery life comparing to before has only lessen by an hour to two.
After using the method mentioned above, I now practising to switch off my phone while I'm asleep to save battery and still, my phone is able to last me through 2 full days (2x 16 hours) for my normal use as before.
Until I get S3........................
