[Q] Some guidance please re: firmware. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello:
WARNING: I am a complete newbie and know nothing about 'flashing' or 'rooting'.
From a previous post, I learned that I should download "GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XWKJ1_I9100XEUKH2_I9100XXKI3.exe" to change my firmware from Spainish to something Canadian. I have it downloaded now.
I also read that I should have Kies installed, due to the drivers that it contains, but not 'running' in any way. I installed Kies but it will not connect to my phone - maybe because of my spanish firmware? Does this matter or is just having its drivers installed the important thing?
Is there a tutorial about how I should proceed? Do I need to 'root' my phone first? Do I need additional software?
Sorry for my confusion but I am really unsure as to how to proceed?
Thanks,
Rob. (proud owner of a $700 paper-weight)

Where do i get the original firmware? Is this it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 Or is that just a kernel?
There is firmware there aswell. Its the "big file" of about 300mb.. Not the small kernel.
I'm sorry...but all i can see is the unsecure kernels and stock kernels but not 'original firmware'. Please advise...i apologise if it's there and i'm just missing it but i've looked.
Original firmware you saved it ???

but my current android version is 2.3.4, XXKG3... (Malaysia)
So, i have to download -->
'' XWKF1
Firmware info
PDA:XWKF1
PHONE: DXKF1
Date: 04/06/2011
OLB (GLB, MM1, STH, SMA, SIN, XME, XSP, XTC, XTE): http://www.multiupload.com/U95BI5QVDL

[Q] Is this how I upgrade Firmware and Root?

Read this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 - and just want to make sure I understand the steps correctly to upgrade to XXKF2. Currently on PDA: KE7, Phone: KE4, CSC: KD1 (CPW).
Step 1
Flash this Frankenstein Firmware:
This package has: PDA:XXKF2| PHONE: XXKF2| CSC:XEUKD1.
Download: http://www.multiupload.com/6E5QF3G431
Step 2
Follow the Quick Root Guide.
I take it that it means ChainFire's insecure terminal is this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Step 3
Flash the stock XXF2 kernal.
XXKF2 Stock Kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/HIKNP08JZA
Password: [email protected]
Return to KE7/CSC: CPW
Flash this:
CWP UK: http://www.multiupload.com/U1WNFZ88L0
MD5: A5A59AE6374C7FC814E8901B40F7C8AA
I'm not exactly sure what MD5 means.
Thanks a lot.
Sounds completely wrong to me and a mish mash of posts .
One flash latest stock firmware from the thread .
KF2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Two root with KF2 from the thread .

Modem and or CSC can be changed after if required .

Dont worry about md5, it just means it will verify its integrity.
As for the steps, if thats what it says on Intratechs guide, then those are the steps you should follow.

In Intratech's guide there seems to me that there are three sections. A stock kernal section, a Frankenstein firmware section and a rooting sections.
Which is why I thought 1) Flash Frankenstein firmware, 2) Follow the instructions in the rooting section, 3) Flash the stock kernal because the final step of the quick rooting guide says "now you can flash the Stock kernel to get rid of the yellow triangle just like how we flashed the insecure kernel above."

These packages below are not official firmware packages, they are Frankenstein package created due to demand for Firmware with different CSC and modems.
Your choice if you need different modem and csc .

So I'm guessing that I can't use the official XEU firmware because my CSC is CWP rather than XEU?

phone needs to be rooted before you flash a custom rom.
have a read through the developer section and all the answers for your other questions will be answered.
first steps first though - read chainfires root and clockwork recovery thread first to see what tools you need and follow the guide to the letter - no exceptions!
.................lol or as above from JJEgan
Typically you will need to root your phone before you install a custom rom, and yes you can easily unroot. There are several guides in the development section to help you. Make sure you read thoroughly and understand what you're doing.

Custom roms are flashed via cwm and stock are flashed by Odin. Most custom roms are pre rooted.

You cant use it with KIES. You will need to use odin to flash it. Use the step by step guide with screen shots in the first post of this thread to find out how to flash it using odin:
