Display of Nook tablet running like a normal android tablet - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

http://youtu.be/NZ_t9cOIFzE
Made the video for my friend Jon to justify him buying it and excuse me trying to clear my nose a bit, was sick with a cold at the time of the video and it was difficult to breathe.

This is great! Any suggestions on how to get some of the features you're sporting here? e.g. the Honeycomb taskbar and the nifty backgrounds, etc?

This is honestly pretty cool.
I've been considering the nook tab myself.
I've really been hoping the devs can get ICS on it but, I'm still a a bit in limbo.
How much tweaking have you done to get your tab like that if you don't mind me asking?

Indirect,
I would really like to know what keyboard that is that you're using. Thanks for the video.
I also made a quick video to show people how my NT is more than "just an e-reader" after a few mods. I made this and submitted it to an Android themed podcast called All About Android.

That is awesome.
Also, blow your nose.

Mine's cooler than yours lol. Anyway, it's the CrashNation Minimal Cyan keyboard found in the HTC Hero CDMA themes and apps section.

Found something similar in Swiftkey for the time being.
Indirect,
Love your work. I owe just about everything I done with my NT to you. Thanks for all of your time & efforts.

Hey Indirect, i noticed (obviously cause you pointed it out) you had Volume+ installed on your NT, how did you get it? When i tried to download it from the thread it said it was not compatible with my device. Did you just download the APK and install it anyway?
Also, nice looking NT and thanks for all the work you've done.

I used titanium backup to install and it's given me no issues except it uses speaker settings for headphones which is annoying. But that's it.
And thank you as well as no problem. I work hard to make your nooks look good and run even better.

How did you get your go launcher to launch from the top right like that?
Sent from my Nook Tablet using Tapatalk

This is kewl, but Im confused. So is the tablet now rooted? I am trying to decide between the color and the tablet. The one thing I like over the color is the built in "mic" so I could actually narrate a childrens book to my 6 year old daughter. So does this mean that we will soon be able to load roms like the color can now?

I pressed & held the icons on the launcher's dock until I was able to remove them from the dock and drag them off onto the middle of the screen temporarily. Then I had + icons in their place. I tapped the + icons and selected the "Blank" option. I deleted all of the icons except the "Apps" icon which I was able to drag around anywhere I wanted.

The Nook Tablet is rooted, but it has a locked bootloader so custom ROMs are a no go at this point in time. And honestly, while it's possible that sometime in the future custom roms could be loaded, it's not worth betting your money on that feature (right now). Good people are putting in the effort, but the Nook Tablet is a tougher nut to crack than the Nook Color. Time will tell....
With all that said, you can pretty much do anything besides load custom roms on the tablet. With launchers and some apps that help tweak it you can get a very snappy little tablet. It just takes a little more tinkering right now to find your own happy place.

This is a hard decision! So going on the android market right now is a no go? But if you root it you can side load apps from the market? Can you surf the web with it right now the way it is? So what would you guys get? If they get past the bootloader problem, which I am sure they will, the only other advantage to the tablet besides the speed is the built in "mic" which later on could be used to talk while using the keyboard, (maybe) similar to the way a cell phone works? Just trying to weigh my options! Just trying to decide which one I want to get right now!

The market is fine for my uses. Apparently there are a few apps that don't show up but meh.
You can surf the web with the thing out of the box, no rooting or side loading required.
And yes the difference between the color and the tab is speed and the mic. The color is alright speedwise if you get a decent rom on it, and tweak it but it's still slow compared to the tab, even with B&N's relatively clunky interface. Also getting the color running at a decent pace takes a lot of effort, impacts battery life (think overclock) and it still has it's limits.
The bootloader is a huge issue though. If you want to run custom roms, i really can't recomend the tab.
If you just want to watch movies, surf the interwebs, or read books/comics/magazines, then I would highly recommend the tab. The nook color is a very special piece of hardware, but it's showing it's age with it's speed. The kindle fire might be better for hackers, but the display on the nook is...well...amazing. Take five minutes with a fire at target or something, then stop by B&N and play with the tab, you will see what i mean. The difference is huge.
To me the decision just came down to the display. The nook's is amazing, the fire's sucks. Since it's mostly a content consumption device, even if i was running custom firmware, the display is the most important part.

Once you get the market on the Nook Tablet, you can use the market to get your android apps. And yes, some apps don't show up in the market for one reason or another, but you can usually find ways around those issues and it's not a common thing from what I have seen.
For example, I had purchased the Slingplayer for my Android phone a few months ago. Once I rooted my tablet, got the market loaded, and signed in the market showed me Slingplayer all ready to download and install... and it works perfectly.
The biggest question you want to ask yourself is "What do I need the tablet to do?" If you consume a lot of Amazon content, the Fire is the choice. If you need a tablet that will go with custom roms sooner rather than later, then the Fire is a better bet. If you plan on loading a lot of your own content, or use the B&N content, then the Nook Tablet is going to be your choice. And finally if you don't mind tweaking a rooted tablet around the existing setup instead of needing custom roms or can be pretty patient in waiting, then you will do fine with a Nook. And just as an example, my Nook Tablet is going to end up replacing my iPad. I still have a couple of things to do to get it where I want it, but I'm pretty confident that's it is a perfect replacement for my iPad, even at this stage (rooted and tweaked by apps).

Thanks for the info, can we get some more
Is there a certain thread you followed to get your tablet to where it is now or would you be willing to put together some kind documentation to get the tablet like yours? Honestly, I'd (and a few others more then likely) would just need a set of steps we can follow... sorry for being a noob.
thanks in advance

the bloatware is shocking and offensive

I went from a G1 to a MT3G to an N1 to this perfectly sized vibrant with its smooth processor and beautiful display and I can honestly say I'm furious enough with all of its bloatware that for the first time I may take an android phone back solely because of the crapware (although the lack of a flash and trackball/pad are unforgiveable as well). Anyway:
Memo
Diary
Office (can't edit docs of course)
Gogo
mobitv
Avatar(its an f-ing app!!!)
Telenav (less than pointless and if you don't pay $10 a month for something you already have free from google you have yet another dead icon in your app drawer)
write and go (another note app?)
Swype tips (just shoot me)
Slacker
Layar
Audio postcard (I almost slammed my phone onto the pavement)
Daily briefing
I don't even think that covers it. I have two questions: if my previous 3 androids including the very awesome nexus one didn't come filled with the scum of the app market how theo **** did this happen to this phone? And more importantly what can I do about it without rooting? Thanks, I realize I'm probably late to the party on this deeply offensive issue but I'm here now and, frankly, I'd love to stay if I could turn this monstrosity back into an acceptable mobile device. Thanks again for any help

First of all. Calm down, man. It isn't that serious, they're just applications. Who gets so heated over extra applications. Especially when you have 1GB+ to install anything you want. Including any alternate launcher that has the ability to hide applications.
Second, you can't do anything without rooting because all those applications are system applications. It's simple and harmless to root. Then if you do you can just use an application like Root Explorer and delete them to to delight.

Wow... You seriously need to settle down. They are just applications. They aren't going to harm you. I don't think anyone has been as "offended" as you about it so you're the only person at that party. I'm curious since you stated you've owned 3 other T-Mobile android phones, did you not use the phone prior to your purchase? You're obviously not oblivious to this forum; so why didn't you check here first before having your meltdown? Just doesn't seem like an act of common sense...
Anyways, just use launcher pro and hide whatever apparently you don't want to see. Or root and remove them. Both are easy to do and don't require any further irrational behavior from you such as returning the phone.
Good luck!

bummer about chrome to phone. And no i didnt use the phone, i still have my nexus but wife was at tmobile getting one so i wanted one too. But the crapware is just stupid, i dont care how much room i have on my phone that doesnt mean i want a bunch of useless **** on my phone. And like with my other phones, i refuse to root just to fix my multi-hundred dollar phone. im not against rooting, just not to make right what should come that way. But honestly, telenav? I mean if samsung or tmobile is going to try to curb their costs by adding redundant apps, they should at least give me the option to pay the extra few bucks to have a decent experience. There just needs to be a way for the average user to remove the crap.
Then again maybe im just pissed because of how i have to pay for how greedy these ****ty companies are. It never ends. I do like the UI though, ive heard nothing but bad things about touchwiz but the whole UI seems very put together. Android said for gingerbread they want the UI to look more cohesive, common visuals/elements. Like what touchwiz already has. Im not a huge fan of the dock or the utter lack of widgets, but its better than vanilla and even sense imo. so theres some positive feedback to even out the meltdown

Wow, you get offended too easily. Just to be fare, tmobile do give you an option to use or not to use the apps. If you don't feel like using those apps like telenav then don't use it. They are not billing you for it just because it's on your phone. You also have an option to root and remove those boatware. Just because you rooted and remove those bloatware it doesn't mean you're fixing anything. Just are just simply uninstalling a few apps. I'm sure some others find some of those bloatwares useful, so each to their own. Main point is, you have the option to decide how you want your phone to be. If it really bother and offend you that much then just stick with other android phones. I highly doubt anyone else find bloatware offensive.
LOL at this thread.
"OMG HOW DARE SAMSUNG MAKE EXTRA APPS FOR PEOPLE??...I DONT USE THEM SO NO ONE ELSE MUST EITHER!"
get over yourself. It's OK for Google to load your phone with Google talk and voice and maps (even though you can get them in the market), but not for the manufacturer? LOL
Cut it out.

Good thing you didn't buy an Epic 4G, you probably would have off'd yourself.
From what I've seen, the bloatware on the Vibrant is the most unoffensive of the SGS phones.

Was I stupid?

So, I'm feeling a bit stupid for buying the Noot Tablet, and here are my reasons:
I actually bought the Fire first but really didn't like it and the Nook Tablet was much faster so I exchanged it. I figured that the faster device would get more attention from devs and might get an ICS port more quickly.
Now I learned that the KF already has an ICS port on the way and has had some experience with CyanogenMod, and we're stuck with...well...root? I'm very disappointed. Wanted to know if anyone could bring my hopes up a little...lol. I need a pick me up because I'm thinking I was a bit stupid for exchanging. Don't get me wrong, I love the NT, it's a great e-reader, web browser, and Netflix viewer, but that's about all it can do for me.
I should say that I have no idea what goes on in development because of the fact that I'm not a developer and don't aspire to be. I just try and follow instructions and give advice if I can with simple things. I'm sure the guys over there are hard at work getting something going, but I'm just disappointed, that's all.
I wouldn't say "stupid" - I'd say you made a decision based on what felt good to you at the time and on the information that was available to you. At this point, ... Yes, the KF has had a few more hurdles leaped, but the KF really wasn't an option for me.
The lack of SD card expansion was an EPIC failure IMHO. 8GB of total space is something that I couldn't deal with. I prefer the build of the NT over the KF also. It's all a matter of personal preference.
With my NT, I'm currently doing a lot of retro gaming (SNES, Genesis, N64, GBA, PSX, etc), browsing, chat, video streaming (Netflix & Plex FTW), HTPC control via RemoteDroid, light photo editing, & even do some of my real work from job w/ office apps, etc.
From reading the Dev threads, there's a lot of hope and there's a lot of (appreciated) hard work being put in, I figure least I can do is be patient & chill. I knew there was a shot the bootloader was locked before I bought it so I made my purchase based on that fact.
I hope you find happiness in your NT like I found in mine

I wouldn't say stupid either. I as well as other developers are hard at work on this. So good call being chill and patient. Think of us all working on this as saving up to buy a really kickass christmas present.
Anyway, yes, we are hard at work, and if you want a mid-end phone hardware device, get a kindle fire. If you want a real mans tablet, get the NT.
Edit: Holy crap! 800th post!
I'm pissed off about the bootloader too. But here's the thing.
You said you didn't like the kindle, and you love your NT.
You list the things that it excels at, and say you love those things. And then say that's all it can give you.
The implication being that somehow having ICS on your tablet will allow you to do more.
It won't ;-). It's still a 7" device with a touchscreen, limited processor, great battery life, and no keyboard or mouse. It's always only going to be good for internet, netflix, reading, some lightweight gaming, etc. Doesn't matter whether it's running ICS or B&N gingerbread.
Think about it this way. Do you use your actual computer for anything different with Windows 7 than you did when you had windows 98? I don't, it's still mostly video games, internets, and word processing etc.
If you love the NT, then just love it ;-). I love mine. The kindle has a super crap screen, no hardware bezel to ease holding it, no hardware "n" button, worse battery, it's not as snappy, etc. Sure I'm not running cm7 or ics which kinda sucks, because they are shiny and i want, but the differences above are way more important to me than having a prettier menu button.
Plus someone is going to get around to getting around the bootloader and we are golden, even if it's later than sooner.

I don't know why ICS is so alluring.
It'd be nice, in the same sense that anything brand new is exciting and nice... but for me right now... the Nook itself is satisfying that craving.
With root, Go Launcher, Home Catcher, google calendar/market, android market, mx player, and psx4droid... it has become a fantastic device for me to travel with or relax with on the couch while watching TV.
What is ICS even going to give me that I don't already have? Bugs? Lack of network use like the Fire? My Nook is great the way it is.
>I don't know why ICS is so alluring.
I do. It's called tech lust. We all want new stuff, especially the ones that aren't yet available. Once they are, then they're old news and time to lust for the next one.
Same old story for Froy, GB, HC, and now ICS. In 3 months, it'll be JB.
Kind of like seeing a pic of a hot celeb. Then one day you see her on the street without her make-up and it's like HOLY CRAP what happened to half of your face?!
Reality sucks. New toys are best when they aren't real.

Applications that have tablet interfaces typically only expose those interfaces to honeycomb and ics devices. In addition, ics is built from the ground up for tablets by adding things like software buttons and 360 rotation as well as built-in rotation lock. The application switcher is miles better and only ics fully supports multiple cores and interface acceleration on the gpu.
There are numerous technical reasons to want ics.

This. ICS is getting a lot of hype from geeks who like modifying things, and want the latest and greatest. That's pretty much it. It's still a media tablet that is faster, nicer to use, gets better battery than the direct, current competition. Enjoy it for what it is,. and watch these forums for advances! Did you buy it to watch videos, read, play android games, etc? Yes? Ok then you can still do that. For the tablet focused applications, Honeycomb* is what you want/will be enough/might get updated anyway soon.
I agree with e.mote. Buying the NT wasn't stupid, especially after direct comparisons. Starting a thread asking others to help make up your mind on something and regretting it based on forum hype WAS stupid
*I thought this was just a random rumor on XDA posted by one person but I checked around some and it seems as if a ton of tablets are getting honeycomb updates this winter, and some of it is due to netflix recently adding honeycomb support and redesigning their software specifically to take advantage of features in honeycomb, soo..... it's possible.

If they update to HC, we lose root with no real way to root again aside from an unbrickable mod then flashing a new bootloader then finding a software exploit. :|
Nah. I preordered the fire at first but ultimately went for the noot. Once it's rooted, it's a good device(not being able to save files without a microsd card aside).

Right, for a while Ideally users here will have advance warning or a way to not automatically update. At worst, likely wait for a way to reroot it. At really worst, sideload the stuff you want (to be honest, I'm happy doing the things I want on it with sideloaded apps - but I'm also not on the new OS now now now bandwagon, and the current tablet runs well for my needs (reading, browsing, video, comics mostly). Like what am I going to want to try doing on a NT? Re-encoding video files? Noooo... (Had a friend doing this on an iPad, trying to see how hot things would get or how bad the battery got. Brilliant.)

Well that obviously depends on your usage - I rarely get crashes or FCs.
iOS doesn't pop up an error message, so you notice it less

iOS is written so that no error message is given when something crashes. This is pure dishonesty in my book. To regular people like yourself, no error message means everything is OK.
The following article explained how they came to the conclusion.
http://www.redmondpie.com/study-reveals-that-ios-apps-crash-more-frequently-than-android/
It's not really a fair comparison. It's like trying to compare Mac crashes vs crashes of windows. iOS is only one one set of hardware and doesn't require as much as work for compatibility. An android app may work flawlessy on 80% of devices but crashes on the other 20% due to different hardware and or software mods. iOS developers don't have to worry about these issues.

It's the exact reason. Moreover, the Android Market doesn't take ages to censor your application before publishing. That also make some un-mature application running on devices

Apple doesn't "censor" anyone they have guidelines that developers agree to when signing up. If you're not comfortable then you can go develop for another platform. The reason all apps have a review process is to assure best possible experience for the users. This is why Apple doesn't have a malware problem that requires you to run anti-virus software on your phone. Strangely enough even with all this "censorship" in place the devs are still flocking to the platform more than Android.

Actually there has been malware on ios market despite its review process. And you don't need av on android if you use market, av can't stop a malware app before it gets on your phone so they are not much use.

iOS and Macs both get malware and virus's despite people saying they're immune or they don't get any. Neither Android nor iOS has any real issue with malware, but Android offers more "virus checking" apps and other similar apps than iOS for sure.
I think it's pretty lame on Apple's part to not display the error messages, pretty much tricking users into thinking everything is ok and it was just a random glitch and not an actual app crash.
Apple does censor in the respect that they do not approve many apps if they do not fit in with their guidelines, which are tough, and for some certain types of apps it makes it impossible to publish even if they're amazing and useful apps.
And yea I can see why many app developers would go to iOS before android.
Because you code 1 thing and it gets pushed out to the most people. Android you have to code 1 thing, then code it again for every device with different hardware or version of the OS.
I'm actually surprised, it would seem Android would have more FCs caused by poorly developed apps or compatibility errors that allow a program to be installed on a non-compatibile device. Not that this is common, but it usually happens with new games. iOS developers can easily test every compatible device, but it would be nearly impossible for Android devs to do the same.
The whole Android virus thing has been blown way out of proportion. Common sense is always the best A/V. Most people get these viruses from downloading warez or risky looking apps in the market. But Google has recently added a new verification process for the Market that will check code and run apps in an emulated environment to make sure they are legit before listing them.

In my use I would say this is even. Ios used to crash less but ios 5 has been a total disaster in my opinion, and crashes and lags have increased dramatically ( company phone, i would never pay for a ios device again). They totally try to hide the crashes by not giving you notice.

I just came back to the Android community. I had a Captivate when they came out and had nothing but problems with the GPS and it constantly rebooted. I got the iPhone 4 and I have to say, they may not have a message pop up about an error with an app, but I can honestly say that I never had any issues with any app that I used. I love my new Skyrocket, but the same issues are still around. It has rebooted several times and still getting issues with F/C's on some apps. I am trying to figure out why these issues are still around now that Android is getting some age on it? I understand there will always be some issues, but I am about to start missing my small screen!!!! Tell me what how to permanently leave my iPhone in the past and start enjoying this great phone??

no simple answer other than learn. What apple has going for it is that it is dummy proof (no offense). You do not need to be curious of how to make things work better they just work as is. With Android, you have the option to learn, mod, flash roms, and improve. I too had a Captivate and all of the issues I had with the device were fixed via custom roms/kernels. I sold it and now use an Iphone for daily business. I would chew my arm off to have my Captivate back as the Iphone 4 is intollerably slower and terribly boring.
So my advise is to either learn or return to the saftey of the shoe box that is an iphone

So you prefer a phone that needs to have its warranty voided instead of something that works? You must have a lot of free time on your hands since most normal people would rather not waste hours making their phone functional. I don't have a problem with tweaking the phone to improve performance or personalize it if that's your thing, but it shouldn't be a requirement to make the phone work.
so go back to your shoe box. or, do better research on the device you are buying before you pcik it up. The captivate issues were well known and any small degree of research would of led you to that. And none of the issues were software related they were hardware.
I find it hard to believe that you would come to a development forum and be confused that people who frequent it mod their phones and void their waranties.

I had too- bought the New IPAD but listen!

I just got the "New IPad" and I have to say that I am not impressed at all. I have never used IOS before and it sucks Android on the Prime is what is going on, for real, and to be honest you cant even tell all that much the screen resolution difference it isn't that drastic! The New Ipad does look cleaner I will give it that but its just boring , so far its went something like this - Go to App Store find app ........... Wait (put in password-what)for an App to download ......... takes forever ......... Done finally ........ Play or use app. Why do the apps take so long to download then you have to type in your pass every time you download an app, that's crazy. I like my freedom, I heard it was hacked already I don't know how much freedom that will bring. No customization at all, I don't know if I wanna keep this thing or not. The Prime is way better so that's coming from someone that owns both. Get a Prime or just ............. Boring so far at least.
I didn't get a chance to try it out at the store because Walmart keeps them behind glass where I live. So i guess there to precious to touch, unlike all the androids that are out too display, use and try them out at will. It was the last one of the IPads so I figured I would buy it and if I didn't like it I would take it back haven't decided yet of course I'm going to give it a few days to see if I like it at all. So far I think it will see Walmart again. Here are some Pics I took side by side.

So what are your complaints about either of the devices anyways?
Great, you have a Galaxy Note as well . I've got all the three devices as well. Unfortunately, my Prime doesn't get too much usages, since I bought Note.
I have a good prime now except for Wifi and BT together sometimes goes out. Gonna get that fixed hopefully. But I get really good download speeds all around the house with the prime. I just wanted to try the IPad out because I have never owned one before so I figured I would give it a try. I don't just sit and stare at widgets though, you must be talking about someone else but they are nice to have, don't you agree? As you can tell I don't have my Prime all set up yet with widgets and all that other stuff. It just feels more comfortable to operate, but like I said this is my first IOS go, so it might get better, who knows? I'm only giving my INITIAL IMPRESSIONS of IOS and my experience with Android Initially was better, that's all!!!
I might pull my Prime out and see how many widgets I can put on the front page. Hell I might put Widgets on every page, nothing but all widgets, actually that might look nice. At least I know it would have the horsepower to operate in that fashion.

The widgets and customization are important for how useful they make the device to each individual user. I don't know about everyone else, but I have my home screens setup in such a way as to provide all of my necessary information available at a glance, along with widgets that allow me to do things like create new notes, create tasks, etc. with a single tap.
I don't spend a great deal of time staring at the widgets. Quite the opposite, in fact. Just a quick glance shows me everything I need to know. Getting at that same info on an iPad would require a whole bunch of tap icon, open app, tap home button, tap icon, open app, tap home button, tap button, open app, tap home button, rinse, repeat, over and over.

Exactly. I don't understand how Gary just thinks people sit there and stare at them. I personally have news, weather and gmail widgets. It's nice to not have to launch three apps to get a quick glance at everything. I can just scroll through the gmail widget and see if there are even emails I need to read and the same goes with news articles.
Widgets are interactive not just static, just much quicker to do the menial tasks.

The customization you'll get from jail breaking is pretty much themeing and it slows the device down, there's no way to get more performance out of it. The things you'll be able to do once jail broken, you can do more on unrooted android..
I guess since development started slow people are second guessing? Believe me, things are coming, things are being worked on. That's just me, 40+hrs a week construction slows things down, im sure theres others like me. Check my git, stuff is slowly being added to my kernel. After that, aosp w/ some things.
>I personally have news, weather and gmail widgets. It's nice to not have to launch three apps to get a quick glance at everything.
How often do you need to check on news/mail/weather?
I check the weather once a day; mail, about once every couple of hours; news, never. If I want to read news, I'll fire up the browser.
It's a preference. I personally view widgets that have constantly updated content a distraction. Neither do I like live wallpaper. I'm a minimalist who dislikes eye candy.
iPad's lack of multitasking is a weakness, but is also a strength, depending how it's used. On a mobile device, multitasking isn't as important. iOS obviously is very responsive, is arguably more stable, and with a simple UI for anyone to navigate. I wouldn't hand an Android tab to my non-tech parents, at least not without tutoring them in its use.
Each platform has its fortes and foibles.
BTW, as a public service for Prime users, consider this a request to the mod to close this thread.

+1 most kiddies on here think it takes 15minutes to prepare and cook and bake a rom/kernel/theme and it really pisses off some devs out there.
Ok I had to respond. I too own a Transformer Prime, new iPad and a ATT galaxy note. You can't honestly say you can't see a difference between screens. The iPads screen to me "27 YO Old 20/20 eyes" is farrrr crisper and clear. It seriously looks magazine page printed clear. Now before people get all hot in the pants I love my Prime too. But posting pictures or viewing a video over the web of course you aren't to be able to tell. All three devices have Pros and cons. Maybe if you had a super high end camera you could see the difference.
As a Prime owner for 2 months I was blown away by the new iPads screens as far as text clarity, zero light bleed, and very accurate color calibration and saturation. The note has the best color saturation but sometimes it looks overblown in movies. People's skin look pinkish etc. Wish I had the international version, you can change the picture mode like movie, standard etc. But the blacks on the Super Amoled are crushing the iPads LCD screen. So resolution isn't everything.
All three devices have their purpose. I haven't used a iPad since the 1st generation, and using it for a few days am impressed with its super snappiness, very fluid UI etc. So if your a person who likes to change your widgets, icon layout, live wallpapers than obviously the iPad isn't for you.
I bought it for the GF and play with it time to time. Especially using the direct tv guide app that android doesn't have yet. It's nice not getting hang up, or freezes or forces closes. But stil love the Prime and my Note. What the iPad is built to do, it does it well. I'll just say that.
And of course so does the Prime but it ultimately boils down to user preference. Not everyone like my GF needs to over clock, or add a custom rom etc...
One thing I've noticed that I like the iPad over the prime more is web browsing it the 4:3 ratio. Less scrolling and more content on the page. But.... Obviously the Prime wins for videos with its 16:10 and 16:9 ratio. But I only really use YouTube on my note, prime and iPad. The workhorse is my Samsung D8000 Plasma.
Please no ripping me, I gave honest non biased points. Good post thought. Do what I did use both for about a week. Than see if you feel the same. I too planned to return the iPad if we didn't like it. But I might hang onto it, along with my Prime. The GF wants too kill me, says I have too many gadgets. Prime, Note and iPad lol.

Whether I check throughout the day as well as email. I ride a motorcycle and live in Texas where thunderstorms come out of nowhere sometimes. I also work as a software developer where my current role is support of production systems handling millions of dollars a day so I check email constantly. For the news its mostly tech blogs and like to just read the blurbs to decide if I want to read the full article or not.

What kind of customization are you looking for? I never could understand the amount of time people spent staring at their widgets on the home screen.

Well if you want to check your different updates (new mails on several accounts, agenda, twitter, facebook, news, weather, ... I could go on), you can see it all by just turning on your screen, instead of having to launch each app separately.
Also, it allows you to have widgets for shortcuts like switching wifi/bt/gps/... on and off with a single click, or anything else you might want to do without having to go through apps, menus, ....
If you don't see the advantage of that, then I can't help you..

I usually add widgets just to add them on my note and prime. The weather and clock is more important to me.
Compared to iOS using toggles can be helpful for wifi, gps etc. but 8 out of 10 times I'll click the actual app icon lol.

The note is sweeet I love it its perfect. tablet and phone with widgets. lol/jk it does have a really nice screen also. Did you root your note yet. If so what rom are you running? I cant decide yet just got it too. Oh the note is only turned up about half brightness by the way, it probably has the best display of all three. Today was a good day!

Yes, I have it rooted (got the international version). I'm currently running Stunner ICS. Awesome ROM. Very stable and issue free.

Well, obviously, if you define a scenario where such things are unimportant, then you're defining away the advantages of instant access to information. Now, most of the productive people I know need to have constant access to a wide variety of information, and indeed it's access to information that tablets (and indeed the iPad) are most often touted for. You know, how they can be used to get information quickly without resorting to booting a PC, etc.
So, if easy, fast, and convenient access to information is important, and widgets provide the easiest, fast, and most convenient access to it, then they should be pretty hard to dismiss as an advantage. This is why more and more reviewers are talking about how the iPad is nice hardware and has a smooth UI, but it's getting a bit long in the tooth in terms of the functionality provided by iOS.

Does anyone watch live tv on their Galaxy Note?

I'm currently trying to figure out a solution for watching the upcoming Olympics. No TV and no computer in the house. I can use DroidTV for the upcoming fall season of typical tv show's or I can go and use Google Play Store. Justin.tv doesn't really work with Chrome. I'd really like to watch ESPN on a regular basis...
What are you guys using for live tv?
LOL...kidding

You can joke all you want but I'm completely serious. I already use the Note for my books and shows, along with my daily browsing and email. It, obviously, handles my telephone needs along with any torrents I need. I unlocked it so I swap back and forth with different networks to handle the data needs. The large screen is a perfect substitute for a couple gadgets and it goes everywhere I do. I have access to everything in my collection via the mSD cards I swap out. It gets used for work as well. The extended battery combined with a Solar Joos gives me plenty of power. I'm tired of people not using these devices to their fullest potential. The only thing missing? Live TV.
(I'd actually like Note 2 to be a tad bit bigger, that might be perfect.)

Interesting. A step. Thanks for the link. Anyone else? How hard would it be to look a take this from a hardware solution? Does an external tuner exist that links to a mobile device? (An Elgato for mobile devices, not named iPad or iPhone?)
Well while I am out on the road I use my Note to watch Live TV.
if you are wanting to watch ESPN there is an app for it.. just ask a buddy of yours for their sign in with who ever they use for TV services.. log in under their name. and you are good...
I have Dish Network at me house. and they have a sling adapter that allows me to access my DVR at home, I can watch live tv on my phone from anywhere I want on my phone, i can access shows I had recorded etc.. again. just ask a friend for their sign in . and go from there.

I once had a calculator that I could play Super Mario on....I was 12 and I spent the whole two months during summer break convincing my mom to fork up the $300 I NEEDED for my math class. She finally did, and before class started, I flashed Super Mario on it, and I took it to class them first day of school, and showed my friends. I didn't play with it after that. Later that semester, I was in the computer lab between classes and I set my folder, my spiral notebook, my Pikachu pencil sharpener, and my Tamagachi on the floor. The chairs spun around 360 degrees. When it was time to leave, I thought I was a hotshot, so I pushed myself backwards, spun around and.....rolled over my calculator/super Nintendo, cracking the screen.
I replaced it with a 15 dollar algebraic calculator which had formulas stored In-ROM. It was easier to use, and therefore better.
I stuck with the TV for playing the classics.
Nonetheless:
http://www.slingbox.com/go/buy
I think they all work with OTA, if not, a couple do. But you need the internet. Which is kind of funny considering your willing to spend how ever many hundreds of dollars on data (hopefully unlimited) or the note 2 (hopefully on contract for the subsidy...otherwise you'll end up paying 750 bucks for it), instead of paying 25 bucks a month and a one time fee of a hundred or so bucks(and hopefully you can upgrade on contract for the subsidy).
The app:
http://www.slingbox.com/go/android
And I have NO idea why you're limiting yourself to chrome....or justin TV. You have flash support on the basic browser, and Ustream works fine. There's even an app for Ustream. Not to mention Sky Fire which was designed to cut out all of the issues that come with playing non-standardized video from weird websites.
Chrome is cool and all, but its just as wacky and buggy if not more so than the regular browser, and doesn't support flash.
You know your regular browser has flash support, because you mentioned Chrome not having said support--so I'm just gonna assume that this was meant to be a troll, rather than a plea (because of the not-so-inviting tone) and troll you right back, with love. Ill still give it my best, and ill give you the benefit of the doubt that either you're having a bad day, or just being a troll, because we "don't use our Note to it's full potential". So here's a dozen ways/resources for multiple continents, stations, and pipes.
(Just having fun. Seriously, don't get mad. Just returning the mood.)
But in all seriousness, I have a friend and he's used the slingbox in Japan, Australia, and all across Europe to access his DVR, and his Local channels in HD via an OTA antenna. There are websites, and depending on your country, carriers, broadcasters, cable companies, and satellite companies normally have special deals on sporting events.
If you live in Canada (XDA app is buggy so I can't view profiles, and this might be useful for others):
http://business.financialpost.com/2012/07/16/tablet-streaming-options-abound-as-london-2012-olympics-near/
And this for the US:
http://www2.insidenova.com/lifestyles/2012/jul/16/family-tech-stream-olympics-coverage-watch-every-e-ar-2060592/
http://tv.broadwayworld.com/article/NBC-to-Launch-Live-Stream-OLYMPICS-App-20120712
This will be a launch of an official Olympics streaming app.
No doubt you'll be able t find an App similar to the MLB's Season Pass thingy.
And I'm sure if there are apps only meant for a tablet, a simple build prop edit or other work around could be easily found and will be blasted all over the internet.
Lastly, the UK:

More:
http://www.examiner.com/article/live-stream-of-olympics-asia-and-africa-via-ioc-s-youtube-channel-1
And lastly: "10 Ways To Follow The Olympics".

Hope this helped
(These were all found on the first page during a search for "stream Olympics". However, you can own your own pipes with an extremely cheap internet package, a relatively cheap box and a darn cheap antennae.)
Also, there's an interesting place on the east coast that will rent you an OTA antennae for extremely cheap, provided you actually live there, and let you stream it.
I edited this to make it nicer, as did others. For this stuff was sooooo easy to find I can't imagine it was a serious question. But I figured that I could provide something centralized to the community.
Haven't watched live TV but i did purchase the 2nd season of Falling Skies in HD thru the play store
for $23.99.
Have used my MHL adapter to watch the first 5 episodes via my 65 inch HDTV.
Just went to watch sunday's 6th episode and they want an another $2.99 for it!
WTH!!!!!
