This isn't Tron dude.

if it was i wouldn't expect blackberry to be the pioneer of it. So how about just helping out instead of trying to demean me.

Don't mind him bro. He does it to a lot of people. Just a douche like that.
I think it has something to do with his life and maybe not liking it.

Check out NFC Task Launcher in the market.

Hey edyts I started looking at some NFC apps on the market and had a question for you.
How do you even set up an NFC tag?
Where would I get something like that to set up a tag for one of these apps to recognize?
Thanks.

Thats sorta what im trying to figure out, would like to have one, say in car on seatbelt so i could touch it and it would link my handsfree, or on bedside table to put it on vibrate ect. Apparantley these tags can be programmed to do such things but i cant find info on how thats done.
EDIT, from what ive gathered, the nfc tags are powered from your phone when its close, so id assume youd program them throught your phone and obviously and app.
another EDIT lol The nfc task launcher paid version, that mobilla mentioned, has the ability to program the tags, theres a catch howerever you need to buy preformatted tags and reprogram them, not sure where to get those. Thanks mobilla.

NFC Task launcher has the ability to write to NFC tags, there are also a couple other apps on the market that allow you to write to them (thought i haven't tried any of them).
There are links on the developer's webpage for purchasing NFC tags (the link is also in the menu in the app) jwksoftware.com/nfc-tags.

There are some (at least there WERE) threads regarding this (NFC tags) in the Nexus S themes and apps forum. As the NS was the first Android phone released with NFC capabilities. The only problem is compatibility between that/those app(s) and the Amaze....but this is XDA and maybe those threads can answer some questions.
Definitely NOT being sent from my HTC Amaze4G until Christmas Day.....

from what i understand about NFC (Near Field Communications) its a communication protocol between two devices near to each other for example Android Beam coming with ICS also it will be used with google wallet which will allow you to pay for things using your phone vs your debit/credit card. The tag system I would guess and this is just a guess would be to label those types of uses for example my mastercard or what not. I haven't read anything that explains how NFC technology would be used like a GPS locator.

not trying to use it as a locater. Just trying to use the tags in different locations to set my phone to different states, or settings if i may. So if im at work for example, i never hear or feel my phone when i get a notification, also there is WiFi and i have a Bluetooth speaker there. So id like to tap the tag, turn off vibrate, mute sound, turn on Bluetooth and hook to speaker, turn of cell radio and turn on WiFi and hook up to network. All done with NFC, that blackberry video i linked has a video of it doing some of those features, i want that for my amaze.

An NFC tag is a passive NFC device, powered by the NFC field of this Android device while it is in range. Tag's can come in many forms, such as stickers, cards, key fobs, or even embedded in a more sophisticated device.
Tags can have a wide range of capabilities. Simple tags just offer read/write semantics, and contain some one time programmable areas to make read-only. More complex tags offer math operations and per-sector access control and authentication. The most sophisticated tags contain operating environments allowing complex interactions with the code executing on the tag. Use TagTechnology classes to access a broad range of capabilities available in NFC tags. -android developers

So sorry to bring this back up but I didn't want to start another thread.
So has anyone have any success using NFC Tags with the ICS Update? Which tags are you using and which app program are you using to program them? Just curious to know because I want to use my phones full potential.

I just ordered a few from http://www.tagstand.com/
I'll post how they work after I receive them.

I just received my NFC tags. Man, they are awesome! I programmed one that I'm going to put by the door that leads in to the garage. I have it set to toggle WiFi and Bluetooth. It works great!
I'm using NFC Task Launcher to program the tags. The app is very simple to use. I'm going to program more for the car, work and nightstand.
I also ordered custom stickers that I'm going to put on them. I ordered from StickerYou.com. The stickers will have the android on a skateboard. I'll post more pics when I get them.
I highly recommend NFC tags!

Will you embrace the NFC abilities?

I'm planning on buying some pre formatted tags for around the house, car & at work.
Hell I might keep a tag in one of my light jackets.
I'll be using this a hell of a lot more than the 3D on my current EVO.

Looks fun. Probably useful for the car/nightstand/stroller. Will have to think about how to work it.
I'm waiting to see more of what people come up with.
This is my first android/smartphone so I'll have plenty to play with for a while.
Just looking at "Tasker" seems like I can do everything based on triggers and events. If those end up being cumbersome, NFC tags it is!
I will embrace! With open arms

I'm gonna make tags and put them everywhere for no reason. Its gonna be fun. Maybe someone can make a scavenger hunt type game out of them. Each tag you scan gives you GPS coordinates or gives you a link to a picture and you have to find out where it was taken....the possiblities are endless.

Ooo..wow, that is a great idea!
You could make a romantic scavenger hunt or even something like "The Amazing Race" !!! People could hit the "way points" with a "Choose Your Own Adventure" type prompt, etc.
Okay, you just sold me, I'm in
p.s. I could also back this up with QR codes for non NFC peeps.
Looks awesome... Will be using!!!
I wish I knew how to develope apps cause I would be all over that idea.
I got a nexus s 4g so I used it a bit. Google wallet at MacDonald's and the PayPal app supports it.

I wouldn't fret, you (not the drive thru people, never give them the phone ) hold it over the reader (Most stores have them, al least in my exp (Phily/NYC) & the app will auto open for your prompts.
Mastercard, Visa & all of the others are supported.
I already have some tags in my hand right now (just got them in the mail). Once I get my LTE, I will program a few for uses. So far I have:
Car:
Turn WiFi on/off
Turn Bluetooth on/off
Open/close music app
Keychain that I should be getting:
Either personal info so I can just send it to another phone or open my fire dept app... Haven't decided yet.
Workout:
Turn media volume up/down
Open/close music app
Play a playlist (if I can)
Bike:
Turn alert volume down/up
Turn media volume up/down
Launch/kill Move
I have a few more ideas but I wont bore you with them.
Android Police has an article that shows you how to program a chip and some of the tasks you can do. I got my tags from TagsForDroid.com.
I'll be interested to see if the NFC radio uses any significant power,
and if it can be turned off.
If I'd have to turn it on every time I wanted to use it, that'd completely defeat the purpose.
Also, Google Wallet won't work on a rooted phone :-(
Right now the only card choices are *certain* Citi Mastercards, or a pre-loaded debit card. Google was doing a deal where for trying it out, they'd give you a $50 wallet credit - I'm not sure if they're still offering that, but if so it seems worth giving it a try.

[REF] How to disable "Presidential Alerts"

This mod was discovered for the S3. I have followed the instructions and verified that it works on the S4 also.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1829681
I was able to "open as text" in Root Explorer to modify the original file. Saving the file from there automatically created a .bak of the original.

My question is why would you want to disable them? If a presidential alert was ever issued I think you'd definitely want to know about it as they are not issued often at all.

On my old Droid X I used to get Emergency Alert System Tests under the "Presidential Alert" heading. They were obnoxious. Not to mention the fact that I simply don't use my phone that way and prefer to get my emergency preparedness alerts from other sources. Oh, and I also have a real problem with .gov cramming this useless nanny-state garbage down my throat.
You want your "[propaganda] alerts" that's fine, don't turn them off. Some people want them turned off and the link above explains how.
That's strange that you got common EAS tests, as I have never received one in my history of owning a smart phone or any phone for that matter. I think it would be a wise idea to keep them on there just in case you are not around "other sources" if something crazy happened. Just my two cents. But thanks for the contribution, I am sure there are other people that feel the same way.
Are we supposed to believe any message that comes through those alerts?
You guys do as you want, I just hope not tax payer money will be spend rescuing you after you fail to heed the warnings.

lol yet taxpayer money goes out to pay for the systems to send these texts out. i don't need a text to get a tornado warning; there's 2893489234893 weather apps on android that do it, along with the fact i own a weather radio that specifically alerts me for it. i don't need my cellphone to do it from the government.

Welt it never hurts. The weather apps I find can have a delay and if a tornado is rilling my way id like to have as much warning as I can get and as many warnings.

In all the time I've been a smartphone user, I've gotten test alerts every once in a good while, and the only emergencies I've ever gotten was several flood warnings, despite the fact that in that realm of time we even had tornado emergencies and ZERO EAS alert on my phone.

The reason nobody is agreeing with you is not because of your stance, it's because of your attitude. Even the people that would normally agree with your point of view most-likely closed the topic and shook their head because you're coming across like a spoiled teenager telling his parents he doesn't need their help and wants to do things his own way.
If you don't want the alerts: Wonderful; however, calling people that see a need for the alerts (or at least understand the reason for them) statist sheeple and [mental retards] is beyond reprehensible.
Oh, and read najaboy's response...then do a google search for logical fallacies. It's like you're just going down the list while creating your argument and demonstrating every one.

POLL: Do you use the fingerprint sensor now?

Just wondering how many people actually use the fingerprint sensor on a daily basis...
I used it occasionally before I was unlocked and s-off, but since that happened, I dont care to bother getting it to work again, since, IMO, it was placed in a bad spot, and I always ended up smearing my camera lens when trying to use it. HTC should either move it or dump it, but thats food for another thread..
Post your feelings about it here!
I am using fingerprint in a daily basis.
I simply register 3 fingers, all of them to unlock screen.
When swiping those fingers (while registering), i place my palm 'not' inline vertically to the phone.
My palm is in casual position. Just like when casually holding the phone, which of fingers that are casually touch the scanner.
For me I swipe them a bit diagonally.
Once registered, It works flawlessly be it when phone in vertical or horizontal position.
Be it you swipe it upward or downward or even a bit right/left ward.
Sent from my HTC One max using xda app-developers app
I use to use it all the time however the fact the hardware is not used beyond the Security screen bothers me. I.E. password/Fingerprint authorizations change authorizations. It should be programmed to work outside of the security screen lock. I.E. buy something on Play Store it ask for a password you swipe. Like Apple did with touch ID.
I don't use it as I don't really like the position and the usability a lot. On my old phone, Atrix 4G I used it only in the beginning as well, never really had a need for it.
Sent from my HTC One max using Tapatalk
Use it everyhour.. thats my method of unlock.. quite better than typing a pin for me.
yes! I even removed my corporate exchange account in order to gain access to the scanner. part of the rules in using company exchange is they disable all of those options.
the chicks dig it too!!!! :highfive:
I love to use the Fingerprint. But i really don't like the position and when Finger lock security active. It alway disable the lockscreen pulldown nofitication. So.. .i disable this. Sadly

But what better place do you think would be possible? i am wondering how a phone which does not have a physical home button can use a sensor in the front?!
Looking at poll, most of the population not using the fingerprint sensor, i am guessing it is going to be acceptable if the devs port ROM's from the One to the MAX without the fingerprint sensor and i am sure that will be easy and could be achieved by a beginner dev
that would be fantastic; there are so many great roms for the one, and I agree, 95% of us could care less about a functional fingerprint sensor, if we could have several more roms to choose from..
Had no clue this has a poll. Must not be viewable mobile which likely most of us viewing this forum are.

Knox/Samsung Pay/root

So it's been a while since I've used a samsung device (note 3). Normally, the first thing I do when I get a new phone is root it, but I'm concerned that samsung pay will require knox to be intact. Any thoughts? Was a way to reset knox ever discovered for newer samsung phones? Just thinking out loud.

i dont get it either. apple devices support ApplePay at day one. Facepalm.
I'm I the only one whos wondering how this will improve my life? I mean am i missing an obvious feature of sampay? will all my cards suddenly stop working? LoL It'll be cool and all that but how will it change the way I do anything?
Just wondering why so many people won't root for something that a piece of plastic I already have in my wallet does?
I need to be educated more on this topic
Cheers

It wont improve your life..
Logic rarely comes into play when a cell phone feature is marketed as "must have";
The reality is, if you plan on using your cell phone as your financial conduit in your daily life, you have to be prepared to deal with the consequences of identity theft, hackers, and the nightmare of a lost or misplaced /hacked/phone /credit card machine..
I mean I have used Google wallet a couple times for proof of concept, but I am much too cautious, and concerned about using ANY electronic device in the manner that Samsung is hawking this process; don't forget, Samsung will make a commission on EVERY TRANSACTION you might do with your cell phone, so, as always, its only motivation is more profit for Samsung, nothing more, and nothing less
If you are all for that, enjoy this procedure, whenever it happens to come out.
But, the vast majority of us will continue to pay as we always have..
Its just as easy to take a credit card out of my pocket, as it is to take my cell phone out of my pocket..

It won't drastically improve your life, but it's a practical feature that can be useful for some people. Maybe for people who don't like carrying wallets. You can just stick your ID in between your phone and your phone case, and you're good to go.
Also, if you forget your wallet... Something that might happen these days considering how everyone has their phone with them no matter what.
If we can use Samsung pay with next Gear Watch like Apple did with their Watch... Man, that is huge.

wear 24 boosting development

Hello there I'm an avid android user rooting and roms. I wanted to ask everyone about how we can grow a community for verizon wewr 24 smart watch. Given the price $80 I think it's the best bang for the bucks as every other watch is north of 200. Wanted to know how I could make that happen. Coz with custom rom unlocked bootloader this thing could be a beast !!
Well I bought one, and I can second the fact that I would be interested in using a custom rom. However what you need is someone who can actually get into the nuts and bolts, to buy one and feel like if they put time into doing that work, that there would be a big enough audience that it would be worth it. There has to be at least a decent sized audience, then you might get a second wave of buys from this community if people see progress. So I think step one, show that an audience of users that want a custom rom on the Wear24 exists.
I also have some interest. I'd be willing to help, but I'm not really sure where to start. I know that with phones Verizon has locked the bootloader and made it tough to get root. I wonder if that is the case with the watch also.
I'm also super interested, mainly to enable NFC (for Android Pay, which seems to be a problem for rooted phones) and LTE on other networks. I'm still waiting on mine to arrive in the UK, it's currently stuck at ebay's Global Shipping Center for more than 4 days. I don't know the first thing about developing a root or custom rom, but I'll try to learn.
Hey guys,
I am also interested in development for this watch, I've kept it on wear v1.5 for now, since I enjoy using it for the mic from time to time, and have disabled cellular and the sim, and am getting around 3 days of consistent battery life with light use, always on screen, and motion wake. Some issues I am having - besides the annoyingly persistent update available notification, is that phone calls from my contacts come in on the watch, but unknown calls don't notify me. Additionally, using ok google to text works but the watch still displays an error and to do it on the phone.
Adb seems to require a rooted watch to disable the vzn messages+ or the update notification - as it kept giving me errors, but maybe someone else can figure that out. I also tried the command oem unlock with no luck, as I couldn't get the watch to accept adb commands in recovery.
My recovery mode lists the watch as dorado v1.21.
Any suggestions/advice?
I also just purchased one. They are now on sale for 50$. I would be willing to toss an additional 50$ to the first developer that could get a clean running android wear port running. And enable the NFC. I am not a verizon customer, nor do i have any intention of ever activation the LTE on a watch.
I too jumped on the $50 price tag in hopes of root and custom ROM at some point in the near future. Would be cool to make this thing as good as it could be instead of the gutted version Verizon tried to sell us.
Same here , got one for $50 today. hoping to find port a clean 2.0 rom. Willing to help.
Got one for $50 today as well.
Perhaps we find a developer and buy them a watch
Another new guy here as of my order today.
Definitely interested in a clean wear 2.0 ROM, and happy to test - watch was an impulse buy due to price, so willing to risk bricks.
Same here guys. Been on the fence for months about buying a smartwatch. I wanted one like Fossil or Movado (super pricey), but in no way could justify the pricing, especially with missing features like Android Pay and not even having Wear 3.0.
At $50, I don't care about missing features now!
Where can I find the 2.7 update or any custom wear rom?
I had one of these watches when they first launched. I returned it because of the vzw crap they put on it. I don't like Verizon messages app and it really wants you to use it. I would buy one again and also throw in $50 to anyone willing to get root and work a custom ROM for it. I have rooted all of my previous Android phones before the pixel XL and would love to root this watch to get rid of vzw apps and just run what I want with better functionality! If anyone is interested please let us know!
Also picked up the $50 watch and would love to have a clean watch as well. NFC payment would be a plus but mostly want to get all the junk off this watch.
Has anyone had any success with contacting verizon to get them to release the GPL source code ?
I think that would be the best place to start.
Find some contact info. and start bombarding them en mass with requests.

Isn't this just a white-label device? If so, would we target Verizon for GPL or the actual manufacturer, Quanta Computer?
id increase the bounty, $25 from me to a dev who can get NFC working and extra LTE band support
Found this interesting. In a verizon promo video it has the android pay app on the watch. I won't get mine until next week. Is this app on there but doesn't work?

I started setting up a gofundme... But lost interest, to much work to set one up. I thing a 15-20$ buy in would raise quite a bit of money for a developer

I don't care about LTE, but I'm in for $20 for NFC functional with Android pay.
