[Q] Initial setup and use outside the US? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hi
Has anyone from outside the US got a NT running successfully? I'm planning to get one picked up for me next week - I'm in the UK, and I've managed to create a Nook account on the B&N website - but I just wondered whether you're forced to sign into your B&N account before you can start using it? And whether there have been any difficulties doing this due to being outside the US? I don't expect to be able to buy anything from B&N and this is fine, I fully intend to root and ignore the B&N store and menu, but I need to be sure that my location won't stop me doing so.
thanks for any help.
Tom

I'm now using it and I'm in HK. It works perfectly.
But I did not start using the service of netflix and BN (Just installing games and apps these days). I'm interest with it but I think it could not be easy to do so. Since I heard someone has being blocked by BN in HK.

thanks Raye, that's good to know.

Have my NT up and running in UK. I just created an account during set up then skipped adding a credit card. Rooted and all working as expected. Go for it.

Wicked, thanks Bunty, that's EXACTLY what I wanted to know. Brother-in-Law is visiting the states on the 10th. Will be having a very geeky Christmas!

I'm from Singapore and I had to get a shipping reforwarder to send me my NT but I've not had any problems using it.
Bear in mind though that you won't be able to use Netflix , Hulu and other similar apps due to location restrictions.

which mail forwarder did you use???... i hear barnes and noble won't ship to some mail forwarders... do they ship to australia?... i plan on getting one with the cash i get for x'mas
anyone else???... what mail forwarders do you use???... do they ship to australia!?

@tomegranate
I've been using my NT from Canada and its's been great.
I set up an account and set my billing address to one of the B&N stores closest to the border.
I used my Canadian credit card and have been able to purchase books and magazines.
The account was originally for my NC.
So far no problems but they may apply a region filter in the future so YMMV.
I dont have a Netflix account so I don't know if the app works.
Hope that helps.

I used Borderlinx (you need a citibank credit card) and I think they ship to Australia. Please google around for a discount code before paying because those come around quite often.

Sorry for dumb question: did NT wall charger support 220V?

Yes it does.

Indeed it does, and that's essential! Not even the iPad charger delivers enough juice to charge the nook. I love my nook tablet, the only really annoying thing (so far )is the charger and the proprietary USB-cable...

The only thing that is proprietary is the cable. I have used the cable w/a Kindle USB charger and my iPhone charger.

Is it a standard USB plug at the wall-end? So I could plug it into my phone's UK charger (which has a USB socket), and plug it into the wall without blowing anything up?...!

The NT can be used anywhere Internationally, the only thing is that it needs either have a credit card/debit card that is tied to either the US or Canada. The only way around this is to purchase gift cards and load them in to your B&N account and have the purchases from the B&N Market deducted from there.

You don't HAVE to register a credit card. That is only needed if you want to buy books and apps from B&N. You may still browse the web, root and sideload apps without registering a CC, just choose "Skip" during setup!

Well, my nook won't charge off either the iPad or iPhone charger... It seems to need a lot of juice... And, yeah, as I mentioned, it's the cable that is proprietary... Any chager that delivers enough juice will work. And the nook charger works on 220/50Hz...

If you want to buy any paid content, you need to be on US (and maybe Canada) IP, or they won't sell it to you.

Best place to buy a Nook Tablet

I am looking to get my wife the Nook Tablet for Christmas. I know they are gonna be $250 for a new one anywhere I get it but I was wondering what's the best place to pick one up. What I was thinking is a place that may give something extra with it. I don't need a warranty since I may root it anyway but if there's a place that gives more for the Nook purchase then I'd want to get it there.
Do any of you know of a place like that (since I know I won't get a new one that is sub $250)
The best I saw was shop with Discover card website link and get 15% cash back.
Barnes and Noble membership is $25 a year, and gives you a once a year discount on a nook of $25. So effectively you still pay $249, but you get a free membership. Check their web site to see if it is worth it to you. That is how I got my Tablet.

Oh hey I almost forrgot about this one. Thanks, one thing though is she has a Barnes & Noble account already so I don't want to get another. If I can find a way to use hers without her knowing do you think they will send her an email thaking her for the purchase? I don't want them to ruin the surprise :-\
Many retailers (BestBuy, Walmart) have extended holiday returns until Jan 2012. B&N only allows a 14-day return.

Thanks but I am not concerned about the return policy because I doubt she'd want to get rid of it once she has her hands on it

I almost did this but if you use the $25 membership to get the $25 discount on the tablet, and then you decide to return the tablet, you can't get a refund on your $25 membership because it has already been used (to buy the tablet).
I checked with the B&N guy to make sure when I bought it. He looked up the details on the membership and said yeah, there's a clause that says you can't get a refund once you've used it.
At the time I wasn't sure if I was going to keep the tablet so I skipped this deal but now that I'm really liking the tablet I wish I would have done this.

You're assuming the unit will have no defect, which isn't always true. It sucks when a new toy doesn't work, and you have to wait weeks to get it serviced (as opposed to exchanging it next day).
Ok, best way I found since they will email her about the purchace is to temporarily change her email to mine when I purchase it and then have her change it back later after I give it to her.
Now I got to think of a way to get her card off her w/o her knowing to do this... $25 cheaper w/o getting another membership is the best way I think
Thanks guys

Could anyone see how much it would cost them to ship to Canada a new NT paid using this Discovery offer? Seems it should turn around $250, right?

Best Buy
Best Buy has a special promo: with any Nook purchase (Touch, Color, Tablet) you get a FREE 2GB MicroSD memory card with 30 free books on it. It is allegedly a $315 value.
Here is the list of books: www[dot]bestbuy[dot]com/site/null/null/pcmcat257200050006.c?id=pcmcat257200050006
The promo is available in stores and online. I don't know how long it will last.
I believe Target and Staples are also giving away a $25 gift card with a Nook purchase, but I don't know if they are selling the Tablet.

Obtained a third party Photon that was apparently suspended, can having the MSL help?

Ok, so here is my issue.
A couple days ago I obtained a Motorola Photon from a third party.
It seems that reason this person was willing to sell me the device for the price I got it at was because it was still linked to a suspended account on Sprint.
After calling them and arguing for quite a while it's become clear that they do not want to release the device unless it's account is payed off and it is removed.
Since that is not likely to happen, I was considering that if I can obtain the MSL using this guide ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1365058 ) I might be able to manually program it with the information from my old phone and skip talking to sprint entirely.
Would this even work? Or am I stuck?
-Timboman
Your probably stuck.

Your best bet is buying a working but damaged model and switch out the board. Good luck. Curious, how much is the balance?
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
The Photon only cost me $70, it was used, but only 4 months old and in an otterbox case, so in perfect physical condition.
I actually managed to get in touch with the person I bought it from and it seems that this might have legitimately been a misundestanding.
Apparently he was on a family member's account, and had recently gotten his own line on AT&T and didn't need his sprint phone, thus why he wanted to sell it.
He's getting in touch with his uncle who is the account holder, and is hopefully going to get it resolved.
If this DOESN'T work out tho, does anyone have any other suggestions on a way around this?

No, the MSL will not help. The problem is that Sprint has suspended your ESN, which you can look at as the "unique electronic fingerprint" for your device. For your purposes, the ESN is permanent and can't be changed. You can use an MSL to change the MSID and MSN (IIRC) - i.e. your phone number, but the ESN block stays.
Maybe you can sell it to someone in Europe or Asia for use on a GSM network. IF you can find a buyer and want to go to the trouble, time and expense of doing that. Still don't see you netting $70.

(1) Unless he CLEARLY told you at point of sale that the phone was blacklisted by Sprint and would be unusable, he needs to give you a full refund immediately.
(2) Pay the Sprint balance yourself only if it's a very small amount like $10-$20. (If it's tied to an multi-line account, the amount is likely much higher) Insist the seller reimburse you.
(3) Sell it outside the US as a GSM-only phone on eBay.
(4) Sell it on eBay for parts.
(5) Small claims court - IF you have a clear bill of sale.
Only (1) makes any sense to me. #2 just gets you in deeper likely, and for #3 and #4, the Photon is not very popular on eBay.
Did you pay by check? If so, cancel.
For others reading this - when you buy a phone from an unknown sourse, call Sprint about status before any money changes hands,
I'll take it from you if you want to let go of it. PM me...
Thanks for the very thorough response willysp, but thankfully everything seems to have worked out in the end.
The gentleman who sold me the phone got in touch with his uncle and was able to remove the phone from their account.
I've already talked with sprint and now have the device fully activated on my account.
Honestly this may have only worked out for me because I was holding his personal info "hostage" (He left his SD card in the phone and didnt format the internal storage) but wether it was legit or not, it all worked out in the end.
Even if I ended not needing it, the info was no less valuable.
Thanks for the help!

No you can't, at least from what I've read (I wondered the same thing). Google wants you to spend that $10 using the phone's NFC capabilities.
Actually I spent mine on a cheap mhl adapter by going to a site that accepts Google wallet
That's good to know. I was just going off of what I had read before because I was wondering the same as OP.

What one did you try? It'd be pretty cool if Amazon or other major online retailers started accepting Google Wallet (though that wouldn't really add any convenience for most people, since I'm sure everyone already has an Amazon accounts).

Someone could technically activate it on your line I believe if you sold it. The network is waiting for it to become active and it's linked to your account. I'd say either use it, or destroy it. Even if it didn't have anything linked to you, the value would be minimal

Here's what happened to me (SG3's SIM Card went bad in August)....IF you go to a VZW Corp store, they're free, but if you go to an Authorized Resale Store, they'll charge you $25 for it. I'd hold on to it, just in case your current SIM every hiccups or flakes out.

What does this have to do with the OP's question? As they stated, its been sold out on the Google Store, and they are asking if any other retailer is selling it.
To the OP: As of right now, I have been looking myself and noone else is currently selling it

It looks like these are able to be ordered again at Google Store.
