Im coming from a captivate, and from what i remember, some roms were brighter than other when i selected auto-brightness.
So far I've tried stock and a few different builds of CM7 and both seem really dim.
Dont get me wrong 80-90% of the time i prefer it this dim, but i find myself just setting the screen on 50% brightness now, and manually changing it to the lowest setting when needed.
Side by side with my captivate, the captivate is much brighter in normal light when on auto. When i make the room dark the captivate responds and goes dim.
Not a huge deal, but im wondering if anyone else notices this.
Nope. If anything I find auto brightness slightly higher. I usually check to make sure it's still on zero in lowlight. Auto in daylight is great (for me)

could there be something wrong with my phone? I find that even with all the lights on in my room, when i go from auto to low brightness, it might even get a little brighter. So the lowest brightness setting is still brighter than auto brightness low in medium light......
Oddly, I found the auto-brightness to be a bit overly bright in most cases. (As well, the display brightness can drain the battery extremely quickly.) I found a thread for the original GSII that details how to modify those auto-brightness values, and made that modification on mine:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...ht=config_autoBrightnessButtonBacklightValues
Now it's perfect (for me.)
If you use cyanogen, the various auto-brightness levels can be adjusted within the phone's "settings."

Oh, so you are using cm7. In that case, there are settings in there for.. quite a bit. To be honest, I'm not sure what all of them do or how they work, but if you rename the thread to something like "need help with cyanogen auto-brightness", I'm sure people would come in and try to help.

well i kinda assumed that auto-brightness would be set up already, and no tweaking should be needed.
And for both roms its has been REALLY dark (as dark as it can get most of the time)
Im just worried its a problem with my sensor now.

For specific times you want it darker you can use screenfilter. It literally makes the screen darker, and by that I mean your screenshots will turn out darker.
I agree with entropy512. Darker would be better. Hopefully ics really will be android completely 'redesigned' and allow greater system control.

Yeah I remember a mod someone made (forget if it was for SGS2 or Infuse) that dropped the low brightness by quite a bit. Definitely would use it again if given the option.
And I finally just stuck to auto brightness cause I'm in and out all day.

I know one of Siyah kernel's features is that auto brightness is allowed to go lower than Stock lets you, maybe that may be the solution for you.

Huh? That's not something controlled by the kernel. This device has an 8 bit value (0-255) for levels of brightness. The minimum setting as provided for by the settings UI is '10'. By modifying xml files embedded in packages, this can be lowered. However, there have been reports that using a value lower than 10 results in a greenish cast to the screen. See the link I posted earlier in this thread. ITS NOT A KERNEL FEATURE.
0 is off. 0xff is full brightness. You can modifying the kernel until your purple, but it's not going to modify the display driver, nor is it going to modify the fact that you can't be any dimmer than off or any brighter than full on.
Next thing I'm going to read is that Siyah's kernel can wash dishes.

+1 for screen filter, it's been one of my most-used apps, as even minimum brightness is ridiculously bright at night.
Here's a link for anyone interested, I HIGHLY recommend it both to have greater control over brightness and save battery (a nice bonus indeed)

I was browsing the SGSII i9000 dev threads and found this little jem, which is now supported on the i777. What this will do is enable you to be able to get rid of Sammy's nasty contrast settings and fix banding, which it does beautifully.
All credit's go to supercurio!
You can also download it in market as Voodooscreentuning.
*after doing this and adding the roboto font, I got to say i'm very pleased with the way the SGSII looks. I've been a little upset about the way it was calibrated. Never understood why devices don't come professionally calibrated, tv's out of the box for the matter as well. I suppose they want to exaggerate color saturation , contrast and what not to give it that "pop".
Here is the link to the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1241590
and to thank supercurio, I will honor him like this kid did in memory of steve jobs by shaving your face into my head!

Really? Wow, it's clear as night and day. I'm running unnamed too. When you use the app you can see right there that the gradient is all banded looking while on samsung settings, it is totally obvious when you switch to native.

I did notice that, but I also noticed the sharpness on pictures seemed to have blurred. That may just be a by product to fix the banding. I'm no screen calibrator.
exactly when you watch movies you will notice that their is no more artifacts, because when you artificially add/enhance contrast/sharpness you create noise it becomes apparent when you are watching movies on your phone. So what you see now is a calibrated native experience. I do graphic design and invested a lot of money on sensors to calibrate my monitor and TVs. It makes a world of difference when you get it right. I notice it most when watching a scene where there is a lot of shadows, the blacks don't crush out all the dark grays.

The app is cool, but I would like a little more control as opposed to 2 buttons. Know what i mean? At any rate, it's free, and you can NEVER hate on free
I agree, more options is probably the one common denominator we share. From his thread this is going to be "huge". That little app took him 4 months of calibrations so I think he is going in the right directions. Curio is the most OCD person I have ever met, which is a good thing in this case! LOL
* I did notice when i got the phone that things looked a little cartoonie! I was still flattered with the screen. I love how everything is a little more natural to the eye.
FYI for those using CM7 on the AT&T SGS2: support will be coming later next week for our device name. Right now it will show as "model not recognized" when you try and run it.
This app is nice. Kudos to SuperCurio

I think it sticks. I just rebooted and it looks like it's still working.

This might help (from Gizmodo site)
"The Galaxy S4 uses one innovative approach to overcome this—when Automatic Brightness is turned on, the Peak Brightness becomes significantly brighter in high ambient lighting than is possible with Manual Brightness, up to as high as 475 cd/m2, which is 34 percent higher than is possible with Manual Brightness."

Both phones are on manual brightness, s4 has the auto tone turned off and screen mode turned to dynamic. Yes, the galaxy nexus is slightly brighter at max than the gs4 at full...esp the whites. I cant imagine it's defective or different than others...
It's pretty damned bright. I usually just crank the brightness...this is the first Android device I have used that I prefer autobrightness.
GS4 Dimmer Than Galaxy Nexus at Full Brightness
Here are some pics I snapped of both phones at full brightness with no auto-anything on and GS4 is on Dynamic for Screen mode (and no auto tone).
GS4 is on the right. Notice how the GNex is slightly brighter in all cases (and even more so in person- the whites just really blow out bright and are blinding white).
Is this normal or not? Do you think this comes down to difference in screens/hardware suppliers? GNex is on newest AOKP too if that matters for screen settings/calibration at all.
The GS4 is plenty bright to me but I question things when comparing these:

If it is indeed not as bright as the nexus, then it may be a faulty phone. The brightness of the phone or lack there of, should not make you question it.

Hey this is guts311 again (OP), on a different user name.
Thanks for the feedback. Dansan, can you possibly post a similar comparison pic with the two phones for me to see what I am supposed to be seeing at max on both? I would really appreciate it.
Are any else's menu and back buttons also fairly dull at all times except for in the dark? I can always see them when they are lit up, but sometimes they are too dim even in decent light. Maybe this is all related.

Kernel is Dorimanx V2.4 and Android version 4.2.2 Stock Rom.
ALL D802 coming out of LG is calibrated to a tight tolerance so they are all pretty close. I can't say for the other variants but I would say if they use the same display, they should be very close. At least mine performs the same as the ones on the review sites.:good:
By the way, this is a single point greyscale adjustment and it does not affect the black point. Although from the gamma point of view it is a tiny bit darker in the 10%.
Ok thanks for this information!
I suggest to keep up the work to always find the best calibration,
Maybe with users resultsnand settings!
Thanks for the tip Slimer pal, it looks so damn nice now!

Hmm maybe should have elaborated . I do like the colder blue stuff more. Got used to it. Same as I hate yellow lightbulbs... all cold at the house .
Just that the setting is not much for me. Knowing that the warmer colors are more natural and better for eyesight I choose the dangerous way of cold white blue

This is about all that we can do for now unless some developers can discover the other parameters that control color saturations. Nexus 5 has some of these tweaks but not the G2 ..... yet.
The human eyes tend to think that white is whiter with a tint of blue and that is why most phones out of the factory has a color temperature of 7000K+. The parameters on the 1st page will yield a color temperature of standard 6500K.
Hi slim, do you know a terminal command that can trigger this values which can be converted on a script?

I have discovered something.
I use lux lite.
In the settings mode there is a night/astro mode.
If you go in there you can adjust color temp but you but only when you select night mode.
Make sure you tick that box then adjust it and then detick it.
It then sets a unique colour change of the display.
Slim can you try it and tell me what temp is equivalent to your calibrated value?
Ps-my whites are really white and excellent contrast at about 5626k on that setting in lux lite.

I don't know you can do it with terminal command but if you just want to avoid using trickster, you can try to download one of Faux123's app like Advance Color and Gamma Control. Yes, that is designed for Nexus 4 and yes it is not supposed to work on the G2 but yes, you can input those values through this app and it will stick as long as you don't reboot. I think Faux123 has a similar app for the Nexus 5 but I never tried. I think it will work as least for the RGB part.
Oh sure it works, I tried them both but I was thinking to use a script
I'll check, thanks

I tried it out, it works to a certain degree but since it only provide a 'color temperature' slider your result will not be as good as the ones that have full RGB control. If I don't have a choice and must go for software tune then I would just download the screen-filter in Playstore instead.
I did not measure it but your values should be okay since the original LG setting is only about 500-600K off.

I don't think would be much difficult ( attention, I'm not able to do that but I know something about scripting)
Also with a simple task with tasker should be done, or,in few time, an easy and ugly app should be enought
the important is to have a compatible kernel that trig the script..
Hey guys!
so this has happened to me a few times now with this V10... I'm not sure what to make of it, and haven't been able to nail down a fix or cause... But the screen starts to randomly display blacks as greys the whole screen seems to go pale or grey... Like this, with Tapatalk I have the dark theme, its black normally, but here its grey. The only thing that fixes is a lock then unlock, but that doesn't keep it fixed. It will go away within a few minutes, but strange. Any opinions?

Yeah had the issue on all three v10's Ive owned. The first two had to do a factory reset. This one did it once and that was it. Don't know what causes it, but it's a backlight thing. This is why it's not showing up in the screen shot.
I've seen the phone adjust contrast such that the screen appears lighter (blacks become grays, etc). This only happens when the phone is in direct sunlight. It's apparently a "feature" to help you see the screen better, with no way of disabling. It does go back to normal as soon as you get the sensor out of direct sunlight.

Very true this feature has been implemented since the g4 or even the g3 perhaps as well. Gets annoying when it gets to gray in direct sunlight but honestly it does help and more better visibility.

Didn't happen to my G3, either one of the two I had...
Matt
It doesn't happen in G3 and it was implemented first (AFAIK) with Lumia 920 which is another proof that that device was way ahead of its time.
It helps a lot under direct sunlight and I'm very pleased to see it being implemented with V10.

It is a feature. Much like the Notion Ink Adam with pixel qi screen, would act like a paper White type screen on readers when exposed to strong light or direct Sun light. Any other device or phone in same situations I've not been able to see or read the screen eve with Hand over it to shadow, except my G4 and now v10. Love the feature.

It's possible the proximity sensor detects ultraviolet (from the Sun) to determine it's outdoor.
Cover it with your finger to see.
Yes I have noticed this feature also and I must say it does work really good!
I've found it to be a help, now that I expect it. It is exactly that, doees it in sunlight. Thanks guys!

This was also a feature on the note 4. I find it very useful.
Also. Doesn't the lumia deal with it a different way? I had the T-Mobile lumia 810 with clearback(?) Technology and when outdoors the screen didn't seem to do the same where it gets very bright and light. It was as if you were looking at the screen indoors

They might have different screens, not sure. But Lumia 920 goes very grayish under sun; blacks becoming dark gray etc.
Mine looks a bit like the image on the left, and I am just wondering if this is very common and it would take multiple returns to get a better display.

Probably just the early production. Mine is perfect and nobody in the same buying group (around 100 people or more) complained.

Mine is grainy, too. I'm thinking of contacting LG for a fix or a replacement. It shows mostly on the camera. The photos are garbage. Even one of the cameras' lenses is shifted to the bottom a little lol

My display is completely free from noise or banding or whatever at any brightness level or color. An excellent display.

It looked really bad and that way (like a paper texture) on my display when using the battery saver when turning down the display resolution to lower brightness levels (on LG Stock ROM).
This was something I noticed quite heavily at the beginning when getting the device.
HOWEVER
I haven't seen this on non-Stock firmwares so far, even in lower brightness.
Looks like it could be an effect of power saving measures on Stock firmware which exposes the grainyness of the Diamond Pentile Matrix of the display more
The same thing happens to me while using the cameras in low light. Is this not an issue with all units?
Edit: This goes away completely if the brightness is above 50%

I can confirm that as well, high brightness eliminates the bloching, especially in dark gray tones. however, something even more weird, brightness of 25% or lower can make some shades of gray completely disapear! they simply turn to black!

Just checked with a YouTube reviewer. He says that this is a known issue with all LG poled displays (v30, v30s and Pixel XL). So replacement won't really help me.

Got my replacement phone and it's still just as bad, I love the phone otherwise but the screen is terrible and it's hard to get over it. The low brightness and yellow-ish colors(White mainly) I could tolerate but not these noisy sandpaperish display. Don't wanna deal with more returns and stuff so back to Essential phone.
The grainy display only is on grey backgrounds on low brightness and is completely gone if I increase the brightness a bit. I can deal with that for a display this good. BTW my hardware version is displayed as v1.1, maybe you should get that.

I'm experiencing a grainy display as well and have a hardware version 1.0 - what do you mean by 'getting that'?

The grain is noticable on every brightness level. Drove to 7 different phone shops and finally found one on display and was perfect (no grain), going to get mine replaced...
Perfect display here. It's actually my second V30+. Overall I have 2 big gripes. The crushed blacks and maximum brightness. V40 apparently fixed those 2 things

Mine is a hw version 1.1 and I see grainy/blotchy greys at brightness under 40%.
V40 may have fixed this but it has a notch. Maybe I'll upgrade if the v50 is a fullview display.
