Hello people I'm new to the Android world. I'm currently using Galaxy Ace 2.3.4 DXKPD, the stock rom. Rooted it. Flashed CWM5 already. I was browsing the forums and saw this Cyanogenmod7.2 unofficial. It looks great! I read the howtos but I don't understand a thing its saying. What's a kernel? I'm sorry if I'm a noob or anything.
Few questions about the rom :
-Is there any minor/major bugs?
-Is this compatible with my KPD rom?
-Will flashing void my warrantey?.
And can anyone simplify the howtos? It's really difficult to underatand and I'm afraid I will brick my ace. Thanks in advance!

GPS can't get a fix on mine, so if you are planning on using maps or navigation, think again. Also, I don't think the camera is as good, doesn't have the same features.
There is a lot to learn when moving to a new ROM even just to get it to look the way you like. On the + side you get a little better performance out of it. But remember, its primary use is as a phone and it will never turn into anything else with custom ROM's. Do it for fun if you're interested or as a learning experience only...

OK this is my first ever foray into "tinkering" or Modding anything ever (I don't know much more than FB and Google) so I am a bit thick but want to learn. I got a Galaxy S2 GT I9100T and it is currently network locked and I was wondering if by rooting it I can remove the lock? Or is there another way to remove the lock which I can do without having to pay, but would like to root the phone for some experience anyway.
Thankyou for your time.

before rooting try 2 unlock ur phone since rooting will not unlock ur phone but helps in installing custom roms
google for unlocking ur phone and then root the same
Google around and you will find a way to unlock your s2. I'm at work so i don't have time to find the link.
Then..
Rooting the original rom will open a possibility to flash custom roms (Android OS) and do what ever you want to your S2. Note that installing root will do everything for you so you can start flashing roms, the kernel(drivers and stuff) is installed when rooting AND the custom recovery also. Recovery is where you flash roms and other things, things you should have read everything about before flashing.
Recovery is like an app that starts instead of Android os and from there you can do all the tinkering you want to what ever you want.
So no, unlocking will only allow you to use what ever carrier you want.
Just read everything you can find about what you are about to do.. and please... read/search a tread for tour issue before asking about it in a thread.. :-D
Good luck and have fun!
ANDROID FTW
for unlocking the phone u can try this link below
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.helroz.galaxysunlock&feature=search_result
PS : read the user review of the same first
That requires rooting so I guess that will be my next step then will look into that tomorrow/today when I am a bit more alive.

voila
I guess what you mean is how to start right?
maybe:
1. download the rom you'd like to go for and copy it to SD card
2. download the kernel flash using Flashtool
3. install the rom using Recovery
whether OC or not depends on the kernel, so watch out and pick up the right one.
I would just like to know how to avoid bricking at all costs and what a custom kernal has to offer.
What is a "safe kernal"? why is the stock kernal so bad?
I've seen some ROMs I like and want to get started soon but read that the SGS2 can be hard-bricked.
After reading this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756242
It states "DO NOT flash any stock 4.0.4 firmware" and then says stay away from OFFICIAL 4.0.4 firmware, can I ask why is this?
As I'm also new to rooting, so what are the advantages of overclocking the CPU? (apart from the obvious) Surely it's at default for a reason, if Samsung could improve the CPU performance without risks surely they would?
Thanks y'all

4.0.4 is leaked and it's stock kernels have eMMC_CAP_ERASE enabled, then using temporary CWM is extremally dangerous.
Custom kernels are offering overclock/underclock CPU, GPU, many tweaks which improve speed and battery life, it has ClockworkMod recovery[...] and they're meant to work with all ROMs (stock Samsung, AOSP, AOKP).
Stock Samsung kernels aren't offering those.
Safe kernel is kernel which has emmc hardbrick bug disabled.
And most important. If you're new to rooting, just read guides, read kernels threads and their features, and you will find the best for you.

not completely true.. there are many official 4.0.4 ROMs although they have one thing in common with the 1st leaked version.. eMMC_CAP_ERASE is enabled on all of them.

Better flash stock ICS before.
Then flash Siyah kernel, in recovery mode flash SuperNexus and after that flash Siyah again, because most ROMs packages are overwrtting kernel.

@przemico510, I've heard ICS on the S2 drains the battery like crazy I want to try and avoid that, is it my only option?
Hi
You won't go to far wrong if you read the installation guide and FAQs from your chosen rom thread. Also other users of that rom will have shared there experiences with various kernels regarding battery life and what tweeks and mods improve or worsen their experience. That's probably going to answer your questions quicker than asking them here. Also please back up your EFS folder once root access is gained. All the best.

I've read that there's a few methods of sorting the battery out by either leaving the phone a week or so and it will gradually get better, draining and re-charging, hard factory reset etc
So I'm going to upgrade to ICS, root the phone, install needed apps like CWM, flash the SuperNexus ROM and then flash the SiyahKernal
Thanks for all the replys guys, can't wait to get started and fiddling around with all the different things. (I don't have the phone in my possession yet, sadly)
When you get the phone please check which variant of the sgs2 you have. If you you use the wrong software on the wrong phone the results are often terminal.

The advantages of overclocking is the obvious statement! Every CPU is clocked higher in manufacturing its just easier and safer to clock them lower. There is risks of overclocking, those risks are the obvious 1's too. You do not need to overclock your CPU in the Galaxy S2 (my opinion). Just use a custom Rom and Kernel. You will notice how responsive, smoother and faster in every way compared too stock it is.
Most people seem to be gone to Jelly Bean 4.1 so maybe have a look at those Roms.

Do you mean the i9100 and the i9100G?
or firmware/baseband?
Hey,
So I upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 to ICS 4.0.4 before 1-2 months. The new graphics and extra features looked really great at first, but 2 hours after using it on normal applications (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter.) It froze and did nothing, like literally just freezes at the screen it lagged on. This has been happening continuously for the past 2 months and I'm really sick of it, I upgraded my phone and my dad's one (both SGS2I9100) using Samsung Kies, ever since that, it just keeps freezing like 4 times a day and I have to take off my battery and re-put it so it can reset since nothing will do this.. The old the firmware I had was the really amazingly going well and never lagged even once (I can't remember which firmware though). I'm a total noob, I didn't and don't have my phone rooted or some stuff like that, expect downloading APKs off the internet lol.
I really want someone to help me in this, I know there must be a solution since I don't think I'm the only one who has been annoyed by this, specially when it happens on a daily routine. I searched over the forums and found nothing. I know there must be something talking about the issue but I'm too nooby to understand the article titles which might be a solution of my problem.
Please help me in my problem it really bothers me and xda is my last hope...
Thank you all.
Note: please use simple terms because I really won't understand, and if you do, please teach me them lol.
Well, first of all your up for some reading.
While you go from thread to thread you'll run into the world of ROMs and flashing.
The first thing you have to know is that your device comes with 4 things:
1) Hardware (dah)
2) Kernel (link between Hardware & OS)
3) ROM (OS)
4) Modem (Baseband for your country / Region)
You are actually on 4.0.4, It's Kernel is known to suffer the brick bug issue.
Flashing is used to get the best from your device, in relation to your personal user experience. You got plenty of options like Stock Roms and Custom Roms, as well as Stock Kernels and custom kernels.
When flashing stock roms you get the chance to get rid of your carrier stuff (bloatware and animation boot) by getting an unbranded ROM (samsung official stock rom), you can either go down to previous versions (Gingerbread, ICS 4.0.3) or even go up (Jelly bean leaked ROM). Carrier branded or not, it's just a matter of choice.
When flashing custom roms you get a whole lot of roms to choose from. The most common are CyanogenMod (CM), RR (revolution remix), Omega and etcetera. These roms take the best of the stock roms and leave the worst, so you'll get a more personalized experience.
When Flashing custom kernels your trying to get the best performance for your ROM, this means you can use a stock ROM with a custom kernel.
Modems are basebands that let your carrier network function in your region / country, so if you flash a modem, your network might not work, so you'll have to flash another modem and so on.
Check all that out and if you decide to go on flashing, we are here to help you on the easiest / safest way to do it.
rembember to read and re-read all first.
you did notice this is now your official post right?
Okay I kinda get it, can you kindly please send me links that will help my problem? I'd rather downgrade with Stock ROM than a costum one.
Another thing, will it affect anything that has to do with my Carier? and does my phone have to be rooted in order this to work? If so how can I?
Many thanks.

When the guy doesn't read it was a good advice to start doing it, because it's not really allowed to ask everything that is allready asked so many times.
When he actually does read, but doesn't understand (which I don't think because he's asking basic question about steps he must take) then it's maybe better to rethink if he's really going to flash something because he doesn't know what he's doing

Why don't you just flash a stock rom through Odin? No offence but I'm serious, the lack of knowledge you show here by asking about Recovery to me seems to be a sign you shouldn't root it at all, and learn a whole lot more about flashing and more if you want to.

These all aren't stupid questions, because everybody had to go through them the first time. It's just that all the questions have allready been answered here on xda, so that's why you've been told to search and read for yourself.
Here's an article that can be helpfull:
http://www.jayceooi.com/2011/08/08/how-to-install-firmware-on-samsung-galaxy-s2-with-odin-video/
If you don't fully understand it, please look into the guides in the S2 section.

Hello
So i just wanted to make a small and clear thread where newbies like me can come and check the most common answers.
Okay so my questions are -
I am Running 2.3.6 Gingerbread Stock on my i777
I bought this phone second hand so i dont know about the past of this phone. Also i bought this phone is US and then came to India.
My Phone -
Stock Kernel - i777UCKK6
Stock Rom - 2.3.6 - Gingerbread
I've read that many people are having problems on galaxys2root.com and have even bricked their phone by Installing wrong kernels.
So can you please tell me which Kernel i should flash ?
And which rom should i flash ?
Also will Flashing a new rooted ROM on my phone Lock my phone with At&t ?
Search and read.

It's best to stay away from that site entirely. The site developer has multiple similar sites for many different phones, and apparently does it for the money, and is not really very good at helping people. Also, while he is a developer, his products sometimes, as you mentioned, cause severe problems.

It's best to make your own choice. The best roms are available on these xda forums. If you don't like the first one you try, you can always switch.

Some of the JellyBean based roms will. SHOstock3 will. Most of the others won't. If that happens, you can unlock it again for free with GalaxSim Unlock, as long as you download it from the developers thread and not purchase it on the market.

If you aren't willing to search and read thoroughly you can't expect support here. If we're willing to go out of our way to help and explain things we sure as heck expect you to do the same for your own questions before posting.

Hey, why don't you read Creepy's stickies for once? It's got everything you need. Without reading the stickies you won't follow the tips properly even if someone spoon feed you.
Hi Creepy, thanks for the wonderful tutorials. I have an unlocked 777 and rooted with that stickies only.
On a side note, ShoStock 3 will not cause loosing the unlock status for every devices. I haven't lost my unlock status after flashing ShoStock 3.
