Hello all! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would just like to know how to avoid bricking at all costs and what a custom kernal has to offer.
What is a "safe kernal"? why is the stock kernal so bad?
I've seen some ROMs I like and want to get started soon but read that the SGS2 can be hard-bricked.
After reading this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756242
It states "DO NOT flash any stock 4.0.4 firmware" and then says stay away from OFFICIAL 4.0.4 firmware, can I ask why is this?
As I'm also new to rooting, so what are the advantages of overclocking the CPU? (apart from the obvious) Surely it's at default for a reason, if Samsung could improve the CPU performance without risks surely they would?
Thanks y'all

I know, I referenced it in my topic. I'm not just asking what the best ROM is, I really just wanted to see if what I wanted was possible.
SGS2 on ICS with custom ROM with Google Now
I have no idea regarding kernals, I just wanted to know the right place to start. I'm new to androids completely, if I go around flashing all these new ROMs to my phone I don't know what damage I could do

Pick any you want: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1204
And read well before doing anything.

Its still a whats the best rom thread with a life story chucked in.Regulars get tired of reading them and its against the rules-same with your thread title.
Did you bother reading the rules lol

Not a life story, more of an introduction. I do hope your "life story" can't be written in a few sentences
Maybe I didn't phrase the topic all that well and reading it back now I am basically asking what the best ROM is but that wasn't really my intention. I've read the stickied threads in this section and the beginning video (which was pretty funny)
I've changed the topic, apologies.

Ok root your phone, stick on siyah kernel and maybe rremix.Read threads about using cwm/odin.
Make a note of your stock firmware in case you need it back later.

What's wrong with using stock kernal?

Are you here to learn or what.Do you think the stock kernel is going to be better than siyah/other developers kernels.
If you cant be bothered to search or read and understand stuff then dont
tinker with your phone.

4.0.4 is leaked and it's stock kernels have eMMC_CAP_ERASE enabled, then using temporary CWM is extremally dangerous.
Custom kernels are offering overclock/underclock CPU, GPU, many tweaks which improve speed and battery life, it has ClockworkMod recovery[...] and they're meant to work with all ROMs (stock Samsung, AOSP, AOKP).
Stock Samsung kernels aren't offering those.
Safe kernel is kernel which has emmc hardbrick bug disabled.
And most important. If you're new to rooting, just read guides, read kernels threads and their features, and you will find the best for you.

4.0.4 is leaked

not completely true.. there are many official 4.0.4 ROMs although they have one thing in common with the 1st leaked version.. eMMC_CAP_ERASE is enabled on all of them.

Better flash stock ICS before.
Then flash Siyah kernel, in recovery mode flash SuperNexus and after that flash Siyah again, because most ROMs packages are overwrtting kernel.

zzzzzz
Go search my question, no accurate results.
@przemico510, I've heard ICS on the S2 drains the battery like crazy I want to try and avoid that, is it my only option?

Hi
You won't go to far wrong if you read the installation guide and FAQs from your chosen rom thread. Also other users of that rom will have shared there experiences with various kernels regarding battery life and what tweeks and mods improve or worsen their experience. That's probably going to answer your questions quicker than asking them here. Also please back up your EFS folder once root access is gained. All the best.

I've read that there's a few methods of sorting the battery out by either leaving the phone a week or so and it will gradually get better, draining and re-charging, hard factory reset etc
So I'm going to upgrade to ICS, root the phone, install needed apps like CWM, flash the SuperNexus ROM and then flash the SiyahKernal
Thanks for all the replys guys, can't wait to get started and fiddling around with all the different things. (I don't have the phone in my possession yet, sadly)

When you get the phone please check which variant of the sgs2 you have. If you you use the wrong software on the wrong phone the results are often terminal.

The advantages of overclocking is the obvious statement! Every CPU is clocked higher in manufacturing its just easier and safer to clock them lower. There is risks of overclocking, those risks are the obvious 1's too. You do not need to overclock your CPU in the Galaxy S2 (my opinion). Just use a custom Rom and Kernel. You will notice how responsive, smoother and faster in every way compared too stock it is.
Most people seem to be gone to Jelly Bean 4.1 so maybe have a look at those Roms.

[ Request ] Tut on flashing CyanogenMod 7.2

Hello people I'm new to the Android world. I'm currently using Galaxy Ace 2.3.4 DXKPD, the stock rom. Rooted it. Flashed CWM5 already. I was browsing the forums and saw this Cyanogenmod7.2 unofficial. It looks great! I read the howtos but I don't understand a thing its saying. What's a kernel? I'm sorry if I'm a noob or anything.
Few questions about the rom :
-Is there any minor/major bugs?
-Is this compatible with my KPD rom?
-Will flashing void my warrantey?.
And can anyone simplify the howtos? It's really difficult to underatand and I'm afraid I will brick my ace. Thanks in advance!

GPS can't get a fix on mine, so if you are planning on using maps or navigation, think again. Also, I don't think the camera is as good, doesn't have the same features.
There is a lot to learn when moving to a new ROM even just to get it to look the way you like. On the + side you get a little better performance out of it. But remember, its primary use is as a phone and it will never turn into anything else with custom ROM's. Do it for fun if you're interested or as a learning experience only...

I was acutally looking for a nice ICS custom rom but apparently i would need one for my kernel(XWKL1). What would happen if i install a custom rom of ICS ment for a different kernel would it brick my phone?
thanks in advance for any information.

probably but you are better off reading and learning before bricking your phone
ICS is yet to be released but we do have a buggy leaked ICS test rom you need to know how to recover before flashing .

Yes it is safe if you know what you're doing and for you that means don't go anywhere near an ICS ROM try a Gingerbread ROM first but before you do that read and read and search and search.
Just practising my speed typing....
wow thanks for such a quick reply so for example if i were to install the Omega rom i would need to get one for my kernel version only right? Then if would need to revert all i need to do is flash my old insecure kernel back and i would be back.
edit: - i didnt see B3311 post. ok i am a lil confused now if i were to install a custom rom ment for a differnt kernel would it work or would i brick my phone?
Kernel version doesen't matter.

Search, Read, Backup and try. Everything you need to know is in the threads. Please read friend that is the only way you get to learn. Look at me. Been reading upon the threads once i had my galaxy s2 just before xmas and i have read upon two months before i got my phone. Now even though i only joined recently i know near enough what i need to do regarding as rooting and flashing roms and themes go. But i still search whenever i can for what i need before i have to ask questions. And most of the time it is right there infront of you. Also another thing if you think the search engine is crap on xda use google. Most of the times it gives you what you are looking for.
Not having a go but today mininum have been two three threads what rom is the best and what one to use and so on. Anyway good luck with the flashing and hope you enjoy whatever you choose

And the key to all the reading is that you are less likely to brick your phone more likely to be able to recover from problems.

True but even with all the reading at least you will feel more comfortable about going about and rooting the phone and flashing a rom. That way at least you do not have to expect others to spoonfeed the information to you. Also when you flash a rom for the first time you will feel great about yourself cause you did it all by yourself than asking others to help you. Hope that makes sense.. and to what you said also you have a great point and i always read your posts when you help people JJe as you are one helpful guy.
Hey, I just contacted Google and advised them to remove the Google search widget that comes standard on every android phone's home screen.
It useless I told them, nobody seems to even notice or use it. Heck, why search when you can just ask?
Still waiting for there reply.

to be clear i never asked which rom was the best and which one to use. I have been reading up on all the different roms available i have narrowed it down to the ICS and the Omega rom and i know how to flash the roms the instructions there are quite clear my only query was about the kernel version for which i could not find a solution. Now i have another question since you guys are saying the kernel version does not matter then why are they country specific and suppose i use a kernel ment for USA would that mean when ics finally got released here for the sgs2 i would need to reflash my phone with the gingerbread 2.3.6 version before i could get the official ICS update from kies?

let me make this clear. Different variants of the s2 hence why you see different forums. If you have an international version then you are safe to flash whatever you want in this forum here. So if you see USA version I would steer clear it as it has nothing to do with the international version if that makes sense. Regarding your other question well yes flash BBL to stock official ROM and that is it

The kernal is not related to country or carrier. The csc is.
Practically all custom roms come with working kernals and modems for the rom.
As for getting the official upgrade, you can reflash your original firmware, but most here just download the new official firmwares from the Intratech thread or sites like sammobile and flash it with Odin. No need for kies. I don't use it at all except for when I first got the S1 in 2010.

The Brick Bug

I have passed the last 3 hours searching about this since I saw it on another post.
What is the brick bug??
According to my readings, this is related to ICS leaks flashing for sgs2 and galaxy note on roms and based kernels...and u can hardbrick ur phone when u do wipes / resets erasing partitions on the emmc.. kind of..
Masters like Chainfire and many others (my bad i forgot their names but they know who they are).. have provided explanations and links to this info. 1+ to KennyLegend for posting the link I read in the other thread.
So, after checking my s2 with Chainfire's app. I got the damn 0x19 chip which means I have the bad one but reading and reading it seems that for kernels based on the 4update source its kinda safe... But as I am not a developer and just and user Im still confused a lil bit about this...
And I know there is info missing for the readers on this thread... Im sorry really .. Im still confused and Im opening this thread with the intention of understand better the issue, so that I beg to the real masters that please clear all our doubts..
I.e. : what are the safe kernels based on the safest update?
And are we safe running xxlpxxx stock rom??
What flashing junkies need to know??
Is it possible to brick our device now since this bug was found on may??
And many many more doubts that will come up...
Thanks

you mean the one whereby when you are using a kernel with the brick bug in it and you clear data, cache, you will brick your phone in the process right?
Hi
I've got the same (maybe) Problem here
Also i have that
VYLOOM
Revision 0x19
eMMC Chip on my GT-I9100
I have the free German Version (Country Code DBT)
And currently using the Polish XXLPW ROM (Kies Release) flashed with Odin over the official XWLP7 also from Kies. Using Chainfires CF-Root for LPW.
Reading this thread in the Epic 4G Touch General Section
it seems that some of the Devs Kernel don't have the 'workaround' that samsung has in some of his kernels.
Maybe of my english or because i haven't the time to read all the 47 Page so far, i do not clearly understand if this bug is only happens if you use factory wipe from the CWM or could it also happens if you use the Option from the normal ROM Settings under ICS.
I will read on and seeking in other sites for more information.
regards
Christopher
We do not have to worry if we are using the international sgs2 (i9100). I think it was for the korean version of sgs2. There are people who hard bricked their device using a custom kernel where they wiped and the phone never came back (it's in the general section). It's really not the fault of the kernel developer but by samsung. So no need to worry guys.

Relax. There's nothing to worry about. If this happens to you (very unlikely), it will happen suddenly, and there will be nothing you can do to stop it happening. If the 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000001% chance of it happening bothers you that much & you want to be absolutely sure that it doesn't, leave your phone on stock & don't mess with it.
This is probably the least responsible piece of information/firmware/app I've seen released in the 8 mths I've been coming here :-|

check the attached images i m running 4.0.3 ics Aut Switzerland
tell me its brick bug i many tym wipe/ factory reset with cwm nothing happen but chainfire app say brick bug exist
The brick bug is only present in ICS 4.0.4 firmware with Samsung kernel (or stock based kernel such as CF-Root) and it's only an issue if you wipe using CWM.
If your phone is stock and you have stock recovery then you're fine. You can delete/wipe cache, factory reset as much as you like. No harm will be done.
In short: 4.0.4 firmware + CWM = Brick.
Unless you flash a 'safe' kernel such as Siyah or NEAK or Speed mod
Brick bug x19 vyloom on my sgs2
hi im new to this forum
i have vyloom x19 emmc bug on my sgs2 so just wanted to ask can i change the firmware to other region or neat firmware over that via odin is it possible?

Sgs2 ics 4.0.4 help!!

Hey,
So I upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 to ICS 4.0.4 before 1-2 months. The new graphics and extra features looked really great at first, but 2 hours after using it on normal applications (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter.) It froze and did nothing, like literally just freezes at the screen it lagged on. This has been happening continuously for the past 2 months and I'm really sick of it, I upgraded my phone and my dad's one (both SGS2I9100) using Samsung Kies, ever since that, it just keeps freezing like 4 times a day and I have to take off my battery and re-put it so it can reset since nothing will do this.. The old the firmware I had was the really amazingly going well and never lagged even once (I can't remember which firmware though). I'm a total noob, I didn't and don't have my phone rooted or some stuff like that, expect downloading APKs off the internet lol.
I really want someone to help me in this, I know there must be a solution since I don't think I'm the only one who has been annoyed by this, specially when it happens on a daily routine. I searched over the forums and found nothing. I know there must be something talking about the issue but I'm too nooby to understand the article titles which might be a solution of my problem.
Please help me in my problem it really bothers me and xda is my last hope...
Thank you all.
Note: please use simple terms because I really won't understand, and if you do, please teach me them lol.
Well, first of all your up for some reading.
While you go from thread to thread you'll run into the world of ROMs and flashing.
The first thing you have to know is that your device comes with 4 things:
1) Hardware (dah)
2) Kernel (link between Hardware & OS)
3) ROM (OS)
4) Modem (Baseband for your country / Region)
You are actually on 4.0.4, It's Kernel is known to suffer the brick bug issue.
Flashing is used to get the best from your device, in relation to your personal user experience. You got plenty of options like Stock Roms and Custom Roms, as well as Stock Kernels and custom kernels.
When flashing stock roms you get the chance to get rid of your carrier stuff (bloatware and animation boot) by getting an unbranded ROM (samsung official stock rom), you can either go down to previous versions (Gingerbread, ICS 4.0.3) or even go up (Jelly bean leaked ROM). Carrier branded or not, it's just a matter of choice.
When flashing custom roms you get a whole lot of roms to choose from. The most common are CyanogenMod (CM), RR (revolution remix), Omega and etcetera. These roms take the best of the stock roms and leave the worst, so you'll get a more personalized experience.
When Flashing custom kernels your trying to get the best performance for your ROM, this means you can use a stock ROM with a custom kernel.
Modems are basebands that let your carrier network function in your region / country, so if you flash a modem, your network might not work, so you'll have to flash another modem and so on.
Check all that out and if you decide to go on flashing, we are here to help you on the easiest / safest way to do it.
rembember to read and re-read all first.
you did notice this is now your official post right?
Okay I kinda get it, can you kindly please send me links that will help my problem? I'd rather downgrade with Stock ROM than a costum one.
Another thing, will it affect anything that has to do with my Carier? and does my phone have to be rooted in order this to work? If so how can I?
Many thanks.

try sammobile.com
they have plenty of stock roms.
I'd personally advice you to get 4.0.3 stock ROM. What's you carrier? I could look it up for you while you learn about flashing/downgrade.
That's what I was thinking of too, and it's Orange IL (Israel)
I need you you to tell me how do it too please

The best option for you is to get Mobile Odin Pro, got 5 bucks to spare in google play?
After installing that, what should I do?

You really should start reading. The people who posted above didn't get all the knowledge by inventing it by themselves, but through searching, reading and trying to follow rhe guides. Search for the threads that are made for people like you who are quite new to this

There are 2 types of people: those who do not like to read and the rest who like. Then those who like may not understand. Now, those who do not read and those who read but don't understand actually contribute 99% of the posts in every forums you visit.

When the guy doesn't read it was a good advice to start doing it, because it's not really allowed to ask everything that is allready asked so many times.
When he actually does read, but doesn't understand (which I don't think because he's asking basic question about steps he must take) then it's maybe better to rethink if he's really going to flash something because he doesn't know what he's doing

Okay, so I did some reading and figured out that I needed to root my phone, I'm on this thread which was recommended by many people http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 . Am I doing it the right thing? since I want to downgrade to stock 4.0.3?

Why don't you just flash a stock rom through Odin? No offence but I'm serious, the lack of knowledge you show here by asking about Recovery to me seems to be a sign you shouldn't root it at all, and learn a whole lot more about flashing and more if you want to.

These all aren't stupid questions, because everybody had to go through them the first time. It's just that all the questions have allready been answered here on xda, so that's why you've been told to search and read for yourself.
Here's an article that can be helpfull:
http://www.jayceooi.com/2011/08/08/how-to-install-firmware-on-samsung-galaxy-s2-with-odin-video/
If you don't fully understand it, please look into the guides in the S2 section.

[Q] Help with Rooting and some other questions

Hello
So i just wanted to make a small and clear thread where newbies like me can come and check the most common answers.
Okay so my questions are -
I am Running 2.3.6 Gingerbread Stock on my i777
I bought this phone second hand so i dont know about the past of this phone. Also i bought this phone is US and then came to India.
My Phone -
Stock Kernel - i777UCKK6
Stock Rom - 2.3.6 - Gingerbread
I've read that many people are having problems on galaxys2root.com and have even bricked their phone by Installing wrong kernels.
So can you please tell me which Kernel i should flash ?
And which rom should i flash ?
Also will Flashing a new rooted ROM on my phone Lock my phone with At&t ?
Search and read.

It's best to stay away from that site entirely. The site developer has multiple similar sites for many different phones, and apparently does it for the money, and is not really very good at helping people. Also, while he is a developer, his products sometimes, as you mentioned, cause severe problems.

It's best to make your own choice. The best roms are available on these xda forums. If you don't like the first one you try, you can always switch.

Some of the JellyBean based roms will. SHOstock3 will. Most of the others won't. If that happens, you can unlock it again for free with GalaxSim Unlock, as long as you download it from the developers thread and not purchase it on the market.

If you aren't willing to search and read thoroughly you can't expect support here. If we're willing to go out of our way to help and explain things we sure as heck expect you to do the same for your own questions before posting.

Hey, why don't you read Creepy's stickies for once? It's got everything you need. Without reading the stickies you won't follow the tips properly even if someone spoon feed you.
Hi Creepy, thanks for the wonderful tutorials. I have an unlocked 777 and rooted with that stickies only.
On a side note, ShoStock 3 will not cause loosing the unlock status for every devices. I haven't lost my unlock status after flashing ShoStock 3.
