Quick question about the way the Vibrant syncs with google:
Every time I add a new contact on my phone, it asks if I want to store to phone, or gmail, and every time i click phone assuming that it would automatically sync with gmail periodically.
Is this not the case!??! I installed a new rom recently and it wiped the phone, and the whole time I was thinkin "o well, it'll resync when I link my account" ... after the rom installation, i noticed that few new phone #s weren't there.
Does that mean every time I add a new number I should always save it to my google account instead of directly on the phone?
And for contacts that are stored on the phone, they appear with a green phone logo next to the contact in the list. Those linked with google appear with a black box and a white "g" inside. How do I convert those stored on my phone to link with google? Do I go "edit" --> "link contact"?
Update:
For contacts that are "google" contacts, they can't be categorized into groups on my vibrant either, because they aren't recognized. Only contacts that I've recently added into the phone are recognized. Is there some trick that I'm not aware of?
I second this question. I used a G1 previously and this new method is extremely confusing.
I currently have NO "contacts" and ONLY google contacts, which means apparently I can't set up any groups because my phone doesn't know who my contacts are!

slick, you bring up another point I wanted to ask about as well! Thanks!
I'm going to amend that into the OP
bump...?
I find it amazing that people have figured out how to turn these phones into toasters, rocketships, nuclear-war-launch-devices and other errata, but haven't figured out how to store contacts correctly...

I always make my contacts google, works good for flashing as much as I do, and also if you upgrade your phone in the future, as long as it is android it will automatically put all your contacts in their for you. If you dont want to do that, there is a paid app called mybackup pro that will backup contacts. But I do suggest that you always use google to save time in the future.
You can link contacts, but all it does is make it so it does not show up as a duplicate contact on your list, your best bet is to log into gmail, go to contacts and add them from there. then you can hit menu and filter what shows in your contact list(facebook/twitter/google). You can add them to google from the phone, but I prefer to add them from gmail or google voice, as i can type faster on my computer.

I recently reflashed a rom and I checked and found out some of my contacts were missing. I checked my gmail contacts and it's there. I checked to sync all my contacts on my phone but it doesn't show up on my phone. I didn't have a problem with my first flash with the rom. How can I resync the missing contacts back to my phone? Thanks!
Yeah...this is definitely one of the worst changes made to Android by the Samsung TouchWiz interface. I had a G1 also, and really liked not having to worry about phone/sim/google contacts. I just want contacts that are always in sync no matter where I go. This is the one thing that will push me to go AOSP once somebody releases a decent rom. As far a I know, no custom ROMs have gotten contacts to be anything other than TW.
ok, i'm not normally one to have trouble with issues such as these, but this is my first android phone (htc evo 3d) and when i first got it on launch date, i manually entered all my contacts from my old phone to my new one. well i recently went through the root process and read that if you had your gmail account as the primary google account, that you wouldnt have to worry about your contacts anymore, after a wipe or changing to a new phone.
well after root i let the phone do all the gmail syncing after enabling it, and my contacts are still not there. i am having trouble getting into an option that will let me view or add or edit contacts from google. i go into accounts and sync, click my google account but all it will let me do is enable or disable the syncing of contacts. can someone give me a brief rundown of exactly how this works? and are my contacts all gone?
It works pretty much the way you described it; once you have the contacts in your phone you sync and they all get saved to your default gmail account. Then when/if you decide to wipe, you run sync again and they'll be uploaded to your phone.
This is what I'd do if I were you;
- Open gmail -> contacts and check if they are actually there.
- If your contacts are there, then maybe you don't have them set to shown in your phone display options under contacts.
thanks for the quick reply. when you say to open gmail, do you mean through the accounts and sync settings menu? or the gmail app? when i go through the accounts and sync, i just get the option of turning the syncing for each category (i.e. contacts, weather, news) on or off, i cant actually go into each one to see what they are comprised of. i feel pretty dumb not being able to figure this out, but i had over 100 peoples numbers and information on my contacts before i wiped and rooted my phone, so i'm willing to accept sounding like a noob in hopes of possibly getting them back.
thanks again in advance.
No problem at all No, I meant open it on your computer (http://www.google.com/contacts) and see if there are any in there.
Regarding display options; I don't know which phone you're using, but you get there by opening Contacts -> Display Options on my LG (http://www.shrani.si/f/30/1s/1KBZD0Ot/screenshot-1314442655693.png a screenshot of how it might look like if it's of any help)
1. I have loads of contacts (probably a couple of thousand). Normally you can do T9 search, like if I wanted to call "liliane", I would type 545263 and it would show liliane and a couple of numbers that have 545263 in them and other names that correspond to the combination. This works on the SGS2 but takes ages, which wasn't the case on my much older HTC Desire.
2. When I want to add a person to a group (going through groups > add contact), I get an enormous amount of contacts called "(Unknown)". Where do they come from? How do I get them out?
3. On my HTC, I nicely merged all of my contacts with their e-mail addresses and Facebook profiles. However, they have all become separated after syncing my Google contacts back to my SGS2 and the contacts app is just not very good at finding mergeable contacts. Also it takes forever to do so since I have a couple of thousand.
4. My Facebook contacts show up last name first, for no obvious reason. Even merged contacts sometimes have their last name first (i.e. Dan Scott will show up as Scott Dan in my phone). Annoying. How can I fix this?

Go on your computer and organize there all your Google account contacts, they will sync nice to your phone. That's what I did. I hope you use a Google account to sync your contacts, not Samsung.
I'm trying to sync my Google contacts but always get the message: "sync is currently experiencing problems". A reboot doesn't help. I even reflashe the ROM (Checkrom 3.5) and that didn't help either. Can anyone suggest a fix?
I’ve just noticed that I’m also unable to sync contacts with my Samsung Account, so I’m guessing that the problem is on the phone rather than the server….
The issue seems to be related to the Go Contacts app. I found that if I deleted then re-added the Google account from my phone I could sync again, but as soon as I added a new contact in Go Contacts I got this error message again. If I add the contact using the stock Contacts app I don’t get the problem. Has anyone else had this issue with Go Contacts?
Solved! (and I'm pretty sure it's for good this time)
So, I've been getting this problem for a while, I've called Google (It's a problem with the OS but Samsung should fix it), and Samsung(It's a problem with the OS but Google should fix it).......... I finally spotted someone alluding to an issue syncing groups in a previous post and someone here mentioned go contacts having issues so here's the process I followed to finally have it working again:
- If you use 'go contacts', use it to back up your contacts to a vcf which you can then import in to google
- Email that file to yourself as backup
- Turn off contact sync under your google account on your phone
- Go to manage applications and open the 'contacts database' app and clear all data.
- Do the same for 'go contacts' and the stock 'contacts' app
- Uninstall 'go contacts' (Probably not necessary but i wanted to start fresh)
- Open Gmail and go to 'contacts'. If you're confident that everything is in your phone's VCF, delete everything from your contacts.
- Import the vcf file in to google contacts.
- Here's the important bit: Delete ALL groups from your google contacts.
- Find and merge duplicates and make sure your contacts are all there. (I found that not all contacts were imported from the .vcf file)
- Install 'go contacts'
- Go to 'groups' and delete ALL groups from the 'go contacts' app.
- Turn on contacts account sync again.
I did this 2 days ago and (fingers crossed) my contact sync is working again.

What if you're confident that both your phone's VCF and Google Contacts have new information? As a matter of fact, it's the case with me. I create new contacts with my phone for a newly received phone number, and I create new contacts with Gmail for a newly received email address. So, I simply can't just delete one set and replace it with the other. Any suggestions?
(Conceivably, I can import the phone's VCF to Google, and rely on Google's "Merge Contacts" function, but I'm a little reluctant because I don't exactly know what kind of algorithm Google uses to get rid of duplicates.)
This Contact sync issue seems to be affecting a lot of Android is users and has been a big disappointment for me. One more reason for me to marvel at iOS's seamless syncing.
Worked for me
Thanks a lot beirtipol...problem solved

I was having the same issue and searched everywhere to find help. Came a cross a post (somewhere else... can't remember where) that said other apps could be affecting it. Thinking back to the most recent apps I have installed, and when the sync issue started, I deleted data and uninstalled Skype and my sync is working fine now.
Hope this helps.
I have finally found a 'reasonably simple' solution that came from suggestions in this thread
1. I have Go Contacts EX installed so I exported a copy of my contacts to a VCF on my SDcard.
2. Email VCF file to my Gmail account
3. Open Gmail on Web Browser on PC
4. Open the email - attachment is shown and Google gives a nice link to say "import contacts" based on the VCF
5. Press the link to import (assuming import and choose file will do same)
6. It may crash... but it has imported the contacts into a new group and may leave loads of duplicates...
7. Choose to "find and merge duplicates" (may need a few manual merges for those it does not catch)
8. Select all contacts and select to remove the "imported..." group that was created (if it crashed for you too)
Now you are left with Phone and Gmail that agree so sync works again.
Next time you edit a contact on your phone it may well stop working again - so do this now and again to keep in sync until everyone stops blaming each other for the issue...
Im still having issues with this...very annoying.

I am having exact same issue however the device is Note II. I never had this issue with my 2+ years of Android usage (Motorola, Sony & HTC phones). This has started with Samsung Note II only. I have posted the same question in Note 2 section however did not get any reply so I am assuming that it is just me who is facing the issue . I don't have Go contacts. It is really annoying as it contacts are completely gone from phone. Any suggestions?
contacts doesn't sync
I believe it is not the hardware = Samsung,
it is not the OS, Im running Padawan 6.2 custom ROM
this was a problem years ago when I switch to gmail and the problems arrived how to translate and auto-sort the first name/last/name/title/address/phone number/and so on , from one platform to other
I am surprised how google (since they support the android) didn't standardized this in its own backyard....
i.e. uninstalled and installed back EX Contacts, cleared the data and still not synking, now when I need it, and not tomorow.
so, the workaround:
clear data in Contacts Storage (! will wipe what you had in the phone !), and sync it backwards, from google to phone, so whenever you got new email contact its there anyway, and type there the new phone numbers ....
the stock address book updates well.......
I agree the stock address book looks cheap, but whatever I do with it, updates google address book....
I believe something to do with rows and columns how one is trying to send but the google doesn't know how to autosort, this why even when you import need to do manual work
just my 2c
Update:
- I remove Google account from phone
- Via web -> Gmail -> Contacts, I removed all groups, merge duplicates. etc and synced
It worked fine for 2 days and same issue occurred again. I am so much frustrated with Note 2. I never had this issues with any of my earlier phone. Now my phone is with service center as they want to keep it for 2-3 days, use and observe.

I had the same problem with my att skyrocket running Embryo 5.4
I fixed the problem by downloading 'contacts sync fix' from google play store for free
I had the same problem with my AT&T Galaxy S3, after reading this post someone suggested that Skype was affecting this. I removed Skype and now Samsung account can sync.
This worked for me:

I have the Note II and had this problem too, I also had GoContacts EX and cleaned up, merged etc a lot of contacts. None of these suggestions worked for me to get sync working. Here's what I did: Backed up all contacts on phone. Removed all groups from phone and Google on my browser (not sure if this needed to be done but was suggested above. You probably won't need to I'm guessing.) (Exported VCF to my SD Card). Then emailed them to my gmail account, imported into my account using Gmail on my computer browser. Waited for it and after a while gmail asked if I wanted to merge. I said yes, then I deleted the group that Google automatically created for the imported contacts and the date they were imported. I also uninstalled Go contacts EX just to be safe.
After this I deleted my Google account off of my phone. Note that I have 2 gmail accounts, so my phone then switched to using the other gmail account. Then I added the normal account back to my phone and it synced fine after that. But I don't know how long it will work as I just did it a short while ago. Hopefully this helps someone though, because I know how frustrating this issue is. If you don't have two Gmail accounts I suppose you could create one temporarily just for this purpose. Good luck.
sgs3 with same issue - remove / re-add account worked for me
i have the sprint sgs3 with android 4.1 (jelly bean) and i had the same problem (sync is currently experiencing problems) until today. my contacts had not sync'd for over a month. no clue why. based on recommendations in this forum:
i disabled other applications (i.e. skype, facebook, yahoo, etc.) contact sync... no change.
i uninstalled skype... no change.
hence, i don't believe there is any need to do the above. what worked for me is...
i went to my pc's google contacts and exported my contacts to make sure that i had them saved off. then, i went to settings, google -> <my google account>, remove account, yes / ok, add account, add google account, etc. while attempting to sync contacts a window popped up asking me to update, i selected now, it rebooted / updated. again, a window popped up asking me to update, i selected now, it rebooted / updated. when it came back up, i verified that google contacts sync'd. the android version now reads 4.1.2.
i re-installed skype, re-enabled other applications contact sync... google contacts still sync. good luck!
I have the Note II and am running CleanRom. Had not issues for a while, then this started to happen. Last sync with contacts was on /2/27/2013 at 7:35pm (today for those lazy to look at post date is 3/1/2013 8:08am).
When this happens, my contacts disappear from my contact button. Today however if I switched the Contacts to Display from my gmail account to All Contacts they are back, but this isn't always the case.
If I reboot its all good, but will come back either later that day, at night, or the next day.
I have deleted the data from Contact Database and Contacts, but all that did was make me have to set the ringtones back up for the people.
Tried the Contact Sync Fix from the Play Store, no go.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've noticed a little dialog flashes really quickly sometimes when contacts are failing to sync, but I havent been able to get a screenie or read it. This is become extremely frustrating.
I have 5 gmail accounts on my V10. Only one is selected to sync contacts. When I use the dialer I start typing a number and start to see choices from other unsynced gmail accounts. When I select other account as visible in the contacts app it populates the supposed unsynced account with names. I have tried clear contact storage a couple times but it keeps syncing the contacts I told it not to. This is getting frustrating. Any suggestions?

5 gmail accounts? amazing, i just have 1, did not see this issue before. try some email app.
The issue isn't related to an email app.
Do you use Google +?
If so, the first time of use, it asks if you want to sync all your G+ contacts.
I made this mistake once and now I have thousands
Sent from my LG-H901 using Tapatalk
I don't use G+ and all the contacts are not synced to one account. The are listed under each individual gmail account. The issue only happened after moving to the V10. My note 4 didn't have this issue.
Any further suggestions?
can anyone confirm they have same problem
Anyone able to try duplicating this issue?
This happened to me on the Moto X (first generation) ... I've been screwed ever since.
My problem with this is how invasive - while at the same time disruptive, repetitive and completely unnecessary this unauthorized merge is as it duplicates contacts.
Example:
1. I have 1 email (& matching Contact List) for work and work related contacts. These contacts include only their work phone and email - and in some instances their work cell # -- which of course would be labeled "mobile" as that was the only labeling option a decade ago.
2. I have 1 email (& matching Contact List) for my friends. These contacts include only their personal phone and email. Although there are a few cell phone numbers that match the business cell, the rest of the info is unique to their personal life.
*** Part 2 of this Contact List is their wives/sig-other gets a Contact Listing - to which repetitive info like the land line and maybe e-mail address is entered, but more importantly their individual cell number. This makes contacting them individually an easy task without guessing what cell number goes to the husband or the wife ... and in some instances ... their kids (who sometimes baby/dog sit). [This may sound rather convoluted to you younger kids, but 10 years ago we didn't have the option of custom labeling the phone numbers, only a short pull-down list of Home, Cell, Fax ... so this is how we did it ... and a decade later with several hundred entries, we're NOT going back to redefine all these fields and merge contact lists as this is still an easy system].
Well - a while back when the Droid X came out, I loaded each email profile into the phone separately - Google/Droid decided to merge all contacts and it's been a friggin' disaster ever since! I went from 200 to 800 contacts in different email/contact profiles, to one, bigass, convoluted, double, triple, quadrupled contact list that is impossible to tell which one is from the Work List or the Personal List or any other miscellaneous list I had .... a 4000K Contact list for every email account - not just g-mail, but Outlook and Windows too! ! !
I've yet to find any app that can simplify or remedy this for me ... (I've spent WEEKS looking for one ... so about a year ago, I took several days and merged all the Contacts into one Gmail list and custom labeled EVERYONE on those lists into one, clear, concise list. I admit that I'm anal about keeping things organized and in clear and concise manner and this may seem nutty to some ... but I also don't make the mistakes my friends make with mis-dials and wrong numbers.
I've had some issues ... (hint: once done, copy to a window computer, then go and delete every back up you ever made of every contact list in every e-mail file to prevent reloading old files into the new, revised Contact list.) ... but I stay on top of it and delete or modify any duplicate. I'm almost back to being sane ... probably because I haven't stopped drinking ;- )
It's going to be a long and lonely road back to sanity. Google is invasive and loves getting all the info it can and will "F" up the way you kept it.
Good luck with a solution. Please post a solution if you find one.
I have three Gmail accounts on my phone. Mine, my daughters and wife's. I only want to sync the calendar, but it also syncs the contacts. Especially if I get a text from my brother, it will come up as Uncle.....(my daughter's account). I tried contacts sync fix as I read in a forum once that LG phones have an issue with broken contacts if you have an I.C.E. contact listed (in case of emergency). This did fix it for about two weeks and then something happened and I was back to seeing my wife's and daughter's contacts over mine.
If you find a solution, please let me know.
