I tried CM7 months ago and liked it but I couldnt use it because of the appdata issue. Did they fix this yet?
What was the appdata issue exactly? I've used CM7 several times over the past few months and don't recall any kind of issue.

there is a quick and easy fix. it happens once, and then no more. download app cache cleaner from market, and clean all the cache from your apps. also boot into recovery and wipe the cache partition. reboot, and all is well again.
this usually happens with doing constant flashes and restores.

Im not following you. The cache cleaner is a temporary fix. Once your apps use up the cache, the phone starts becoming very unstable. The problem is CM7 uses a very small amount of flash for app data compared to what the stock Samsung. I found myself having to clean cache daily, then I got to the point where it wasnt even helping because of the lack of space.
give this a shot. if this doesn't fix your appdata issue, im stumped. however i havent ran into that issue since mid-october if that means anything with using the kernel cleaner before every flash and recovery.

I don't believe Ive seen this mentioned anywhere yet, so I figured Id remind those who know, and inform the newbies who don't know.
Ive heard people who have applied various lag fixes complain that their phone slows down over time when opening apps. This "fix" i am about to mention is really easy and can help anyone not just those who have problems with an applied lag fix.
If you open Rom Manager and use Fix Permissions, wait for it to finish, then select Reboot to Recovery, and wipe Cache, and then go to Advanced Settings, and wipe dalvik cache, then reboot normally, your phone will hang at the Galaxy S bootscreen for a few minutes, it might take a while because it is rebuilding the dalvik cache, you should notice things running smoothly again and apps opening quicker.
Hope this helps anyone out there!

No, wiping the caches shouldn't affect your installed apps.
And all the same, if you still worry about it, just run a nandroid backup before you wipe the caches, then if you run into any issues, just restore, or advanced-restore only your data partition.

So not a big deal cause I have replaced my update.zip with the clock work reboot update.zip and can reach clockwork still by "reinstalling packages" but I tried this fix and now can't reboot into recovery straight to clockwork through rom manager cause it says something to the effect of
E: can't reboot cause file /cache/update.zip missing

Not exact but obviously there was a vital cached update.zip that was used in order to reboot directly into clockwork through rom manager.... Any idea on a fix? Think it would be unwise to just reflash clockwork through rom manager again to recache the file? Would anything else be effected like possibly overwriting my past nand recoveries? Thanks guys/gals for any help on this one.

yes, your missing the update.zip that unzipps itself to run clockwork. So yes flash the update.zip again through rom manager.
I just creates the update.zip file so it will not do any harm.

EDIT: Immediately after re-booting, it definitely seems smoother and snappier - thanks again for this. I was wondering if I should do something like this, but didn't know what, because I'd flashed Eugene's Vibrant6 and a lag fix and then restored to my pre-flash nandroid. I thought the phone's performance was suffering after all that, and I definitely found this tip helpful, so really appreciated!
I flashed sharks ed01 and it fcs the apps it opens. They all were restored from my backup root.

not a whole lot of info for me to work with here, but you probably are trying to restore some system things or something with an incompatible new rom. Likely the only way to fix it is a data wipe and then reinstall whatever applications you need... maybe clearing caches and datas of apps but I doubt it.
A data wipe is usually good anyways because the phone slows down when you have a lot of things installed and if you're anything like me you have a ton of stuff installed that you only used for one specific thing or for beta testing or whatever, and doing a data wipe and then just installing those applications on a need-to-have basis will give you a noticeable speed boost.

Alright, I hope I have this in the right place. I just recently flashed the TerraSilent Kernel for the Galaxy Player 4.0 US version. The Flash went fine, but my device was running extremely slowly. A re-flash didn't solve it either. I figured that wiping the cache partition might solve the problem - I decided to do this before running a backup, since no important data is stored in the cache (...right?), and since I was worried that backing up while I had this problem could make things worse - so I went ahead into CWM and did just that. Then, it reboots, and I nearly get a heart attack. The stock wallpaper is back, it's using the default launcher again (I had LauncherPro installed), and pretty much only system apps work, all the others have an icon with an SD card on it, and when clicked on, it says something like "application not installed". I did some searching, and it seemed like a reboot might help (although I didn't find anyone with a problem like mine anywhere). The reboot didn't do anything, so now I have it shut down, so that nothing can happen. The odd thing is, it doesn't seem to me like the system messed up and did a full wipe instead, either, because a couple of things I have are still there - for example, some of my bookmarks I made on the homescreen while still using the default launcher are still there. I'm really confused because I have wiped the cache partition before, when I was still on an unmodified stock kernel, and everything stayed the same, the way I thought it was supposed to. And now this happens. What do I do now? I exported my absolute most important data (Astrid Tasks and Calendar) before I installed TerraSilent (but I obviously wasn't able to do a full backup because I wasn't rooted, I figured installing TerraSilent would root it), so my absolute most important data is on my computer. I also did a simple file backup of the internal USB storage and external SD card to another computer before flashing TerraSilent. However, there is still a good deal of data still need, and a lot of data that would just be a pain in the rear to recreate, not to mention my (valuable to me) game data. What did I do wrong - or did something in the system mess up? And - what do I do to get back to where I was before?
It happened to me when I was on gingerbread with terrasilent. It's a known issue with this kernel. In fact, you didn't wipe the data, but the recovery contain a bug wich format the data as soon as you do an operation wich mount the data partition(I think it's this but I can't remind) but it doesn't wipe the system or anythin else, so the icon, setting and everything else stay there but without anything attach to them. I don't remind what was causing it, I only stopped using cwm with this kernel unless I wanted to flash something or to wipe everything. Sorry but I can't help you more as I don't remind everything, it's been a while since I've been on gingerbread.

Wasn't that problem solved with a later version of the kernel though?
And, assuming that's what happened (what you describe sounds pretty much like what happened to me), would that mean that the only way to try and get it back would be by trying to recover the formatted data?

It was said to be resolved, but it happened to some peoples even thought. Maybe you can recover some of your data with your computer and some tools that let you get the erased data, but I can't guarantee the integrity of your data and you would need to replace every bit of data that was there before to get it running nicely. The easiest way would be to try to recover some of your important data, put it on your computer then wipe your player and start from scratch (wipe data/factory reset) and reinstall your apps. Then put back the save, or setting or files that you got back in your apps. Hope this help, I'm not a proffessional with data recovering or where to put it back after you got it, maybe someone else could further help you with this.

OK, my reply is late, but thanks for your help. I managed to copy the partition with all the deleted contents over to the computer, and I'll have to study the contents some other time, because I've spent about 24+ hours on this problem in total, and need my device for more important purposes - those for which the data I managed to copy before the custom kernel and everything else. For those of you who have a similar issue, this is how I managed to save (or that is I am 95% sure this will have saved at least some, as I said I haven't studied it yet) what I hope is a good chunk of my data.
Have you tried flashing a different kernel? Terrasilent also gave me some weird in that after a few days my device would boot into recovery by itself then wipe all my data in that only my system apps would remain. So it's a little different than what's happened to you. I ended up using klin's R3 kernel or Steven's kernel that fixed the issue.

I've got huge issue with steve's kernel. You can get into recovery, but once you booted in it will simply bootloop. Then you have to flash back with odin. So if you go with steve's kernel, don't boot into recovery. As for klin's kernel, I've never tried it, and will probably never as we have some really nice jellybean rom that I recommend you.

Actually, with my problem, my system apps did remain, so it's almost the same problem, only my device didn't boot into recovery on its own (seriously, it booted into recovery on its own and wiped the data? ). I only installed the terrasilent kernel to be able to upgrade to JB, so I'm now on JB, running into different problem (the wrong settings are being backed up from google backup, they're restoring from my galaxy mini 2), but thanks anyway. I am really not having any luck at all with this whole update . But ti-pich, I agree with you, that JB rom is awesome

Yes it did, after 1 week. I was like ???. I reflashed it again and it did the same exact thing, and it happened to me while I was at my college too.
I also had that same issue where it was restoring from the wrong device. I just had to reflash the rom, and install stuff manually because it was making my device horribly slow.

Wow that is some scary stuff, now I know why every kernel/ROM/mod has a disclaimer at the beginning ... I'm glad I'm off that now and on a stable JB build now. I found a way to have it restore at least some of the stuff from when it was on gingerbread (mostly apps and appdata, no WiFi passwords or other settings - at least I'm pretty sure, I'm still working on getting all the stuff up and running) - go into a terminal, and type

bmgr list sets

hmmm. I'm about to try Terrasilent with my YP-G1 (US version) running 2.3.6. This is giving me second thoughts. Does this kernel still cause issues with SGP 4.0s running GB 2.3.6?? Maybe I should try the old Steves Kernel? I just want to use voodoo sound - thats really the only reason I want to root and get these kernels.

I have a weird problem with installing some apps and I have tried so hard to fix this, but nothing have worked. This is not a problem with dalvik cache or some other cache, I have enough space in every partition, reflashing from start (with wiping and everything) did not resolve my problem.
The best thing is that I have installed some apps that are over 50mb, but e.g. Readability with is ~7mb cannot be installed, even though I have apps that have exactly same size.

So I got the g3 back in Aug. And rooted with one of the early methods.
I stopped keeping up to date with updates but now my phones running a little slow so I figured I'd see what updates I should apply or what the best route would be to go.
Currently I am on 4.4.2 build kvt49l.
I do not remember what I used to root but I believe I'm stock Rom without custom recovery and only root.
I'm okay without going custom recovery, unless it's super easy to obtain, I just enjoy having root for a number of reasons.

If you are on the VS985 (Verizon model), only Stump root works.
But, first off, before doing anything, how many apps have you installed? What is the amount of free memory/storage on your phone? If you have way too many apps installed, that can cause the phone to become sluggish. I would suggest removing any apps you know longer use.
Also, you could boot into recovery and wipe the cache and dalvik. Not a factory data reset which wipes your phone, but just wipe the cache and dalvik cache.
I would do that first before taking the OTAs. If all you have done was root via Stump and have not "bumped" the phone with TWRP, you can go into SuperSU and tell it to maintain root across OTAs. Then, you can take the OTAs as they come in and you'll maintain root.
But, i doubt that will fix your sluggishness with the phone. As I stated, I would check to see how much free storage you have left (both on the internal memory as well as the main memory). Then, wipe dalvik and cache and try that as well.

I don't believe I have that much installed.
I am having an issue with installing apps all of a sudden. I keep getting an error saying I don't have enough space, but I have plenty...?
My issue is with lag. Especially with the keyboard. I'm using the stock LG keyboard but if I attempt to type quickly it'll lag and cause me to mistype.
I'll try wiping the cache and what not and report back. Thanks for your input.
Edit: so I wiped the cache and the device is still laggy. Would tasker be causing it at all? Thanks again.

I have had tasker before and removed it due to it causing lag. I don't know if it still does. I haven't installed it as I have no use for it.
You could try freezing it and see if that fixes it as opposed to uninstalling if you have a lot of settings created. That way, if the lag still persists, you know it wasn't tasker and you could just unfreeze it and not have to worry about setting it all up again from a clean install. Unless, of course, you use something like TiBu to back it up, then you could uninstall it and see.

The other possible issue could be your cache or dalvik cache partitions, but I see you've already cleared those out, so I'm not sure why else you would be getting this.
Here is a link that has a lot of possible causes and solutions. Try these out and report back because I'm at a loss:
