Charge, x2 or thunderbolt? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have to pick from these 3 only. It is free. I cannot select any other device.... ..which one would you pick and why? Tyia

I would choose Thunderbolt, because its HTC....just my opinion if i had to choose between 'em

Droid X2 better than both hardware and batterywise.

What are ur intentions with the phone?
Movie watching? Facebook? What's ur main things u would like to do with ur phone?
Do u enjoy modding/rooting and tweaking ya phone?

The Thunderbolt is known to also have issues with losing signal (3 and 4G) when you go inside...anywhere. The Charge is a powerhouse. I stream hour-long videos with no buffering whether I'm on 4 or 3G. The screen will knock your socks off. The update has made everything smooth and snappy.
The X2 is good too but it's pointless to get a dual core phone unless you're an intensive multitasker with very processor intensive systems running.

I would go with the Thunderbolt.
Had a Samsung before and it was crap. Cheap components and the phone fell apart falling from knee high.
Not a big fan of Motorola either. I think Sense is a lot more developed than motoblur or whatever its called.
I have an HTC Sensation and a friend of mine has the Thunderbolt and from the sounds of it both are pretty comparable, only difference is I have dual core.

Well i would go for the O2x... its AMAZINGLY fast and it may exchange my pc i mean, dont you want to have a phone that loads websites in 3 seconds?

+1 Droid X2!

Get the bolt. Don't even dwell on the other phones. Load AOSP onto it and go.

Dual core htc lte phones on the horizon?

The reason I ask is that I love my phone but im wondering if I should take it back and wait for a dual core for battery life reasons. I only want htc because I have had Moro and blur sucks. Plus moto seems much more crippled so to speak. I know that the ego 3d is just a couple of months off so was wondering if something might be prtletty close behind for verizon, and I font care about the 3d nonsense, I just want a disk core because I assume that it will be more battery effecient. Please feel free to correct my inaccuracies, because I do love my phone, but the battery does leave a little to be desired along with the retarded micro usb placement. That is my only two gripes with the phone. Thanks for any siggestions.

By the time a dual core LTE phone is released by HTC, unlimited data plans will be gone.
I disabled the lock screen and turn the GPS off when not needed and my battery life has improved dramatically... worth a shot?
I think everyone's eyes are too big for their stomach. It will be a while before a dual core phone will come out, where android is optimized to use it, and apps take advantage of it. Seriously, buy the time my upgrade rolls around in January 2012, it might be there. In the meantime, lovin my TB on 4g.

So the next 4G phone for Verizon, which will be a motorola phone, the bionic will be a dual core LTE phone. Not HTC but will be dual core. The main reason I think the thunderbolt isn't is that there is some kind of delay in the dual core snapdragon processors from what I heard. But I agree the biggest benefit of jumping on the thunderbolt, which a really decent phone, is to get on 4G especially while it's still unlimited.
If bat life is already bad on a single core I can't even imagine on a dual core
It wouldn't be near as bad if HTC didn't try to put the smallest capacity battery they could find in there. That said, I've had no issue getting through the day. I'm connected to wifi all day at home and work and won't have LTE in my area until later this year.

You say that, but the phone is already a beast even with just a 1400mah battery. Can you imagine how bulky the thing would be with a 2000? And if the phone is only getting 6 hours per charge now, adding another 600mah woth of battery capacity would only give you about 3 more hours. It wouldn't be worth it to me.
The problem is not the battery capacity. The problem is that 4g radio on a very limitted 4g network. So it is constantly searching for a good 4g signal. The same thing happens to me everyday at work, because the 3g at my work sux. So my phone searches all day, and uses the battery up quick. But on the weekends when I am not at work, my battery lasts much longer.
We need to be turning the 4G radio off when we are going to be in a non-4G area for an extended amount of time. And then turn it back on again later when we leave that 4g dead-zone. That would make a big difference in battery life.
Or if they could make the radio more effecient, like instead of constantly searching for a signal, maybe if there is no signal, don't search again for another 15 minutes.

Dual cores are usually more power efficient as each core is running at a lower clock speed from what I have read. There are some other specifics that I cannot recollect at this point.
So just a random semi relevant question. If the EVO 3d is cdma & LTE as is rumored what would keep that phone from running on Verizon?

Seems gimmicky to me. I don't understand why any one would want this in a phone. But to each their own. Anyway, I just wish we had DC for battery life, I could careless about benchmarks, etc. The 1Ghz does more than I need it to, but I would like it to be a little bit easier on this juice.
I am considering the TB coming from a Windows HTC Imagio and just think it sucks that I would have to spend time shutting things down then bringing them back up just to save batt. life!! I haven't yet experienced an Android and just not ready to learn a new phone. Just getting sick of windows. Nothing out there for them.
BTW. Is there anyway to get Windows Media Player on the TB? I have never liked the Sense music player. You cant play an album from start to finish. At least I cant on my Imagio

I get better battery life on my Thunderbolt than my Droid. So, this battery life thing isn't a universal problem. It has to do with 4G switching. Trying to connect to weak 4G signal and dropping back to 3G often is killing battery life. There isn't LTE where I live so I get great battery life.
Just look for some media player apps on the market. That's what I did. I think I use car tunes, but I would have to get my phone and confirm.

Wanna know how powerful the E3D is? Check this out!!

As you know our phone uses the Adreno 220 in the Snapdragon 3 processor. Here are the real benchmarks not that quadrant crap.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4243/...mance-1-5-ghz-msm8660-adreno-220-benchmarks/2
May favorite link below has several true test and compares all dual core chips:
http://www.droidgamers.com/index.ph...1661-dual-core-beasts-the-decision-to-buy-one
Also its the same chip though it say 1.5ghz don't know why htc lowered it but once we get root I'm sure we will clock it right back up.
Nice. Everyone keep kissing Tegras ass like it's king of the hill. It's nice to see some benches and a good article.
Thanks.

Love the second article. Really shows what power lays under to hood in this phone. I have been saying all along that this phone is possibly the most powerful phone out....but everyone else always says yes but look at SGSII quadrant!
For quadrant to be trusted it needs a mayor overhaul. And benchmarks are dor the e-penis bragging. Its all about RL performance. Anyways those results looks promising for us!.

'faster' at this point it the development of the mobile gpu space is kind of a weird statement.
I'm waiting to see who cleans up in mobile gaming, because historically Microsoft has been the company that figured it out (directx). Dx allowed ATI/NVIDIA to have pretty deep systematic differences in execution strategy, but with the same end calculus.
Wouldnt be surprised if it ends the same way honestly. Google needs to roid out their gaming APIs so game devs don't have to spend more of their time in multi-device debug mode.

I found it interesting that the iPhone 3GS beat out the iPhone 4. Not sure if the testing is all that accurate. But I don't need stats and benchmarks to tell me that my EVO 3D is faster than the G2x or the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (after owning both).
I think HTC reduced the chip speed in favor of battery life.

Iphone4's score was due to the retina display. You know how some people claim that the display should not effect the score of the device in benchmarks, hen concerning the 3vo? Well the iphone4 seems to demonstrate otherwise. We all know that the iphone4 is an impressive gaming device.
What is vsync? I noticed there are 2 different results with it on and off.

I can't tell you exactly what it is but it's definitely GPU related. I've heard it many times about video games. Supposedly, if a game is not vsynced properly, it causes screen tear during the game. That's as much as I know
V SYNC (vertical sync) limits the framerate to match the display, so if your display will only do 60fps it will limit it to that
Good read. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=928593

Yeah, I forgot about the iPhone 4's screen resolution. I have the iPad 2 and I am amazed buy it's gaming capabilities. I tried many Droid tabs but my $500 seemed happiest with the iPad 2. But phone wise I'll keep my EVO 3D. My favorite phone since the razr days - never knew why people were so EVO crazy until now.

Almost every benchmark will favor one chip or the other. None of them are truly unbiased.
As far as the performance of this phone vs my previous ns4g and epic. I'm not disapointed. I rarely if ever encounter any lag on anything in the UI, and everything opens in a snap. I can't complain at all with any UI element performance.
Most games I get to run perform at least as well as my hummingbird powered phones, However I do have issues with random games crashing and not working. Sure, the GPU is more powerful, but if it wont play 1/2 the games then the power is wasted.
I want to clarify that I really enjoy this phone, and the gpu issue is one I will be able to just deal with.

It's not the gpu its the Unity Engine. Check out these links. If you notice also no games lag just a random crash. It's a new gpu sometimes these things happen has nothing to do with its power.
http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/94...ation-Battleheart-Trial-Extreme-and-Samurai-2
http://androidforums.com/android-games/364036-unity3d-games-dont-work-adreno-220-a.html
Btw several dev told me Unity is working on it. I was also the one to figure out it was there engine. Most developers use it to do a quick iPhone to android port but they have to pay Unity of course but it makes relatively painless for them to port. But if something goes wrong with the Engine on a device pretty much every game will be affected and developer can't do anything about it because Unity did all the real work so they can't fix the coding.

Just bought atrix but.. should I get LG Thrill 3d

The atrix I bought with laptop dock is unlocked and running Alien, faux1.3, custom cemetery, and was planing on putting ubuntu for my webtop experience but I was chatting with an att rep. And he wiped out the thrill 3d at first I was like oh a rip off of infuse but he showed me all the 3d goodness and let me play nova 3d I was quit impress.
My question is im still under best buys 30 day with 20 sumthin days left SHOULD I TRADE MY ATRIX AND GET LG THRILL I wont have laptop dock since I bought it with my lovely phone I love my Trix but I loved the demo I has with the thrill...

Have Atrix now for about 3 Months. Longer I have it, the more I like it. Tried out Thrill @ AT&T a few times. About 3 hours total. Ran Quadrant & Smartbench on both, Thrill about 10% faster, prob because of Multi-Channel CPU & RAM. Fast & smooth. Also ran Linpack, 44MFLOPS on Atrix & 69MFLOPS on Thrill. Screen brightness & extreme angle visibility about the same. A little heavier & bigger, but not much. So if u want to try out 3D & have a little bigger screen, then Thrill may b for u. FreddieBoy
I think it really depends on what you want. If 3D does it for you, you will want the Thrill. Personally I wouldn't give up my Atrix unless something really special came along. I believe the Atrix is a more "mature" phone if you catch my drift, while most other phones I consider to be "toys". The Atrix isn't full of gimmicky sh*t, and the hardware hasn't really been tapped into yet to show it's full capabilities, so it will only get better.

Played with a thrill in a store for a while yesterday. Screens cool and 3D is neat but hurt the **** out of my eyes after a few minutes. 2D regular pics were kinda crappy and 3d stuff isn't viewable right off of phone. (3D pics show as 2 side by side images on a computer). Needless to say I bought an ATRIX instead of waiting till Sunday for a Thrill. Cool idea but it wasn't great. Nice gimmick more than anything.

I hav had the thrill for a week and im returning it for the atrix. The 3d is kool but not a selling point. it is fast with the dual channel but it tends to run out of memory pretty quick. I have noticed that the lg stock ui is worst then moto blur. When changing the ui to launcher pro did notice the phone was faster. ONce it is rooted and has cm7 running will be a great phone. Once I heard Lg will be releasing a better version at the bigging of the year decided i should go with the atrix. The battery life is really bad. If yuo use the 3d the battery just goes. i get about 3 to 4 hrs with nomal use and 3d. I would stick with the atrix personally but then again it is your hone so your decision. You still have days left so try it out for a week and see if it makes your day. Im getting 2800 on quadrant and 72 on linpack with the thrill

I'm pretty sure the thrill uses the same style 3D as the new Nintendo 3Ds. Case in point the 3Ds is having horrible sales ( that's why the price went from $250 to like $170 so fast) because it's making a lot of people nauseous (I played one at BB and it was not good lol)
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
Are we talking about the phone that I have? Because the 3D the Thrill uses is true stereoscopic 3D at 1080p. Which is why you can shoot a video with the thing, DLNA it over to your *insert brand here* 3D TV and look like what those TVs are intended to display 3D in.
The 3Ds is having crappy sales because Nintendo was grasping at straws to try to keep people buying there crap. It is aweful 3D. At launch it already had a warning to parents to not let kids under five use it for the "potential" sight impairments as they got older. LOL! This is not the Thrill's kind of 3D. The 3Ds was a gimmick for that system.
Understand, I am not targeting anyone specifically with my post but with a phone like this you have to spend more than a few hours in a store with the device to get an idea what's up. I was a manager at a Best Buy location as the mobile manager and moved to manage home theatre.
What I am getting at is I was there long enough to see customers reactions to the first 3D TVs. Like you we kept hearing the whole 3D TV is a gimmick I will wait and see what happens. It is not new technology. It is older technology that had great potential that was waiting for the technology of other devices i.e. hardware, to catch up to its capabilities.
So we go from the big screen at the theatre, to the TV in your living room, to now being available on a cell phone. The Optimus 2x and the Thrill are smokin' fast phones the first to have stereoscopic 3D. The EVO 3D, well I was disappointed with that but its still a decent phone. The Thrill and the others coming will be glitchy and have a few downsides because they are the frontrunners. Honestly, I was not expecting LG to put a phone out like this and have a launch as smooth as its been. The phone is very fast that is not a real argument. The battery life does suck but after enough forum trolling and watching threads and posting etc. I am surprised that we got someone like DesignGears out the gate, reluctantly mind you, LOL but still going after it to start some real development on this device. I found after trying a few apps. and such that I had forgotten about the SuperPower app. made by some of the guys here at XDA. After jacking with how to set SuperPower up on the new beta version I think its like v8 or something; I waited until the battery was at less than 20%. Then did a full uninterrupted charge to 100%. Kicked off SuperPower, unplugged the beast to see what's up. Well that was 9 hours ago. I am sitting at 73% battery left. I have been doing 3D gaming, downloads from the market, music downloads, posts here, and some calls and a crap ton of texts. So I think we are good on the battery. Respectable anyway.
Not to be Captain Obvious but the phone is rooted too. All I am saying is this phone has a tremendous amount of untapped potential that is begging to be unleashed. There is nothing about this phone that says, "gimmick" to me. This phone says I have more power than is necessary in a cell phone but won't be unhappy if you really let me fly.
Get one and really dive into the thing for a week and if you still feel the same about then you can slap me twice and call me Sally. Then go straight to a Best Buy Mobile or where ever you got it and say it was installed with a flux capacitor from the factory by mistake and you want an Atrix instead. Sorry for the wall of text everyone but I don't usually post very often but I had to here. I would hate to see someone miss out on solid technology like the Thrill 4G.

have to totally agree. been loving this phone as is. did install a custom launcher (go Launcher ex) and go sms but that is just because i like those apps alot. the battery life is just great the speed is amazing. and the phone just rocks tegra 2 like no other phone on sprint rocks dual core period. you won't be sorry.
i came from a evo shift too. i loved that little phone but this phone smokes it
I couldnt agree with the above more! This is my first Android and what a phone to have! I work for Sprint in a Service and Repair location and I RARELY see Photons come into my location. There were a few from the last OTA update (some could dl it but it wouldnt install) but other then the occasional setting mis-cue, the phone kicks butt!!! Build quality is solid, external speaker is incredibly loud and crisp sounding, and overall call quality, signal strength, and performance is top notch. You will not miss the Shift at all!!
I had mine for about a month coming from an original evo 4g. I love this phone..
Where do I begin?!! You dont have to take the battery out and turn the phone off just to take the memory card out. and it is very fast. Games on it look amazing. Console quality. HDMI mirror is incredible. You can play Tegra 2 games on an HD display if you dont want to play on just the little phone screen. I make all my friends jealous.
Get the photon you wont be sorry.
Good phone i came from a epic 4g and very excited...

I came from the shift and this phone is so much better. It is my first non-keyboard phone ever and i have no issues typing. So far today ive gone 6 hours and my battery just dropped to 80 and im still on stock 198_6. My first photon was really buggy: reboot around 12 times a day and had the screen of death issue but my new one is completely bug free. The speakerphone on the back is incredibly loud so i can actually listen to youtube, etc videos unlike the shift. I am just blown away by how nice this phone is.

GREAT UPGRADE hands down...

So I have a bit of a decision to make... Also a bit of speculation.

I've had my photon since October. I've been an avid HTC fan until I picked up this phone. Sold I was. I've never looked back.
However, I really like the new evo lte. I have serious problems when it comes to new toys that are easy to obtain with something as simple as the swipe of magical plastic.
That being said...
My theory on Motorola and the rumored Photon Q is as follows;
Motorola has said, according to an article on either engadget or AC, that the quad core Tegra 3 with lte will be ready Q4. The fall CTIA is October 9th - 11th. I'm gonna say we will either see an event a week before or an event at CTIA in October. Things just seem to be coming together like a good game of tetris.
Now I really don't wanna burn and uograde when I'm expecting to see something amazing from Motorola. I'm also betting Motorola picks up the ubuntu project which I also think will be shown off in October.
That's a lot of speculation... Lol
So, I'm thinking I'm gonna keep the photon and buy a dock and a keyboard and a mouse and hook it up to this 73inch monster sitting in my living room. Only problem with that is the reviews saying that webtop just sucks a big set.
Questions...
Is webtop that bad?
Is it worth it for somebody who might find it useful?
Is all the functions of the device still there? Text and calls and what not.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA
Webtop sucks. Useless. Has really specific use case scenarios and very, very little beyond that. Good news is Moto know this, and have made some head way towards fixing it with the new ICS webtop on the RAZR, which will presumably be included on the Photon's ICS update. It's basically the ICS tablet interface with properly scaled apps and a separate home screen layout from the phone. Quite cool.
Tegra 3 is ****e, though, and I can't imagine the LTE variant will be any better. Snapdragon S4 trounces it in very meaningful ways like browser performance, battery life, and audio quality. I desperately wish the international/open market One X had S4 instead of Tegra 3 (Though I still wouldn't buy it because the One X has no SD slot... Whereas the Evo LTE does). If I had the option, you bet I'd buy the Evo LTE over whatever Moto churns out at the end of this year. Next year, under Google, Moto might have a shot - and open bootloaders. This year I for one have been burned enough.

Useless if you are locked but if you unlock it has near unlimited potential. ICS Webtop on the other hand is a joke and is a move in the wrong direction. ICS Webtop should be an extension of "Mirroring Mode" and Moto should replace the current Webtop with a proper desktop environment. If Ubuntu and I can run a proper desktop environment on an Atrix/Photon why the hell can't Motorola. Here's a write up as to why stock Webtop and ICS Webtop are full of fail.

Citrix web apps. And if you use it for work, and your company has a draconian device policy that makes it easier to authorise one device and use it on multiple screens rather than actually use a laptop.
Apologies for neglecting the Ubuntop/Webtop Plus dev. Have yet to try it thanks to being stuck on locked Moto devices myself. Looks great, and I can think of many more uses for a full Linux distro in my pocket.
I actually like what they're doing with the new webtop, though I wish it was more powerful and could run the phone apps in a window like the old webtop. There's a lot of merit in taking advantage of Android's built in scaling, and having a separate UI with widgets and so on for larger screens is a great idea.
Ultimately I wish webtop was ChromeOS, since that would make the most sense from a Google product and service consolidation perspective.

Looks like tegra 3 won't be out till 2013

tegra 3 is out now, tegra 3 + (lte support wont be out til late this year, the phones are already being made and software tested. ALL the high end sprint phones will have s4 chips this year.
I'd be ok with a quad core S4 like that lg superphone is rumored to have.
So with webtop just blowing chunks, can you get ubuntu to run on a stock photon that's locked? Or is unlocking mandatory?

i really doubt it will have the quad core, sprint isnt gunna one up the evo a few months after by having such a much nicer phone.
and ubuntu isnt even out yet so its not possible at all right now
Like Loki said, his Ubuntop makes webtop into a beast. Your performance will compare with the original netbooks in some ways, but in another it just makes your device infinitely more versatile than just a netbook. Even if you don't extend webtop, basically imagine a Chromebook that uses Firefox instead of Chrome. The only other native application would be the Cell phone window that lets you use your cell phone in an IM like form.
It's not all bad, it's a heck of a lot better for nothing. Before I changed webtop I mostly read webcomics, social sites and used Google Docs. After Lokifish's improvements I now have Bluefish, Abiword, Gnumeric, a real desktop experience that doesn't sacrifice anything from the phone. It is only too awesome to have your phone move seamlessly from being a handset to a miniature computer without any skips in calls or text messages. Since I chose to integrate Google Voice I can text from the web without anyone being the wiser.
so. ...... what can we do now top make whip or get ubuntop now? ... and how do i do the hdmi hack? before people start saying search function or google. i trust people on xda..... and the search function using the app on my phone always says no results no matter what i put in

Ubuntu actually being a full fledged mobile os is pure speculation right now unless I'm missing recent news. Canotical was vague on the subject. It very well could be talking about some sort of official webtop-esk support.
