[Q] My GS2 does not work - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would like help from forum members.
After doing a root using the original firmware version, available here in the forum, my GS2 stopped working.
The device connects, the splash comes from Samsung (the one where the yellow triangle appears), but after that the screen goes black and nothing appears. Imagine turning on your PC but not booting in windows!
I can access the download mode and recovery mode. But nothing I do solves. I've tried putting other firmware versions but not resolved.
The Odin recognizes the device, the Kies not.
Another problem is that I do not know what was the original version of the firmware, but I know that the device was a French version, if that helps.

Flash a stock rom via Odin .
Stock Roms .and csc

I tried that. It did not work. I used the XWKK2, XXKI4, and XWKI4 XWKK5. None of them worked. I can flash them as I explained in the first post, but does not work.

Service centre is your next step .

Did you try booting to recovery and clearing data / cache ?

Yes,I tried.
I would try to install a custom rom for CWM, but can not access the sdcard to copy the files.

Well if you can't get it to work in any known way and you dont want to spend money to get it fixed , I'd say soft-brick it by enabling repartition in Odin and get a jig , then try again. You only lose 3-5$ that way. Don't get me wrong , it's the last thing you should try. What you probably should do is to take it to service.

I bought the usb jig must be delivered within 7 days.
But the jig is used to enter the download mode and reset the counter, right?
I can enter the download mode and recovery mode, I can even install any firmware version (official/CF). But none of that worked.
I believe it is with some corrupted file that is not connected to the firmware.
Or not!

Never tick repartition. You won't be able to bring it back that way. You can try soft bricking by unplugging the phone while flashing wih Odin but i still don't recommend it if you aren't able to boot even after flashing multiple roms. Service center would be your best bet

Flash your custom rom again .
Custom roms do not get KIES updates .
and get updates from Kies. I don't want a rooted phone etc.. Just a normal phone all back together.
Wipe phone
Remove Kies from PC >>remove KIES from registry >> download and install your original providers rom saved original rom or as near to original from the stock roms post .
You may then get KIES updates .
Note may not definite .
Or search CHECK FUS.

Hi, I have the same problem as the OP but I'm unable to connect to ODIN. My computer(s) won't recognize the phone whatsoever.
I have a CDMA (US Sprint) SGSII with ICS KP8 (leaked, wrong region) on my phone and it won't connect to my PC. I've been searching for an answer all day.
I have: tried ODIN 1.85, 1.83, 1.3, uninstalled Kies, tried all my USB ports, tried all the USB ports on my other laptop, rebooted my laptop, and the phone many times. I've tried different cable as well.
I have the factory ROM zip file on my phone in a couple different locations, and I've been trying to get recovery mode to recognize it so I can "apply update from external storage" but it says E:failed to mount /sdcard (no such file or directory). I've done the factory reset and even *2767*3855# but everything brings me right back to a broken 4.0.3 with no wifi or mobile network. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? Thanks so much.

did you tried flashing 4.0.4 stock rom with odin?
same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago, flashing 4.0.4 and after that flashing 4.1.2 fixed it.

okay? the first thing to do here is just flash a stock ROM, no need for pit files
Mine was stuck before than samsung logo, on the model number screen. Almost 1 second or less after opening the device.
Then i flashed 4.0.4 and magically it opened without any loop or something. Its useless to flash 4.1.2 or any other jb stock rom, for some reason it seems not fixing the loop issue.
Again, there is no problem related with pit files.

Follow the steps to root and flash your custom ROM again as if you just got your phone. The same thing happened to my T999, and it took me 3 tries doing this to finally get back into Recovery.
try to flash in odin stock rom then root use cwm then try to go to recovery..
My cousin's having the same exact issue and we've been unable to find the proper rom. Can anyone please tell me where to get one? I've downloaded some "international" ones but when i try to upload it it keeps telling me failed, i've tried at least 4 or 5 different roms.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!

Try several times before giving up. Sometimes it works after when the device feels that you've had enough stress and fear.
I mean the problem is common but it's solved in different ways or different repeats.
But it seems that your problem is a software problem that can be solved.

[Q] Somebody call Columbo!...

Hi all.
I think i have killed my Galaxy S3 i9300!!!
I rooted it and installed the Paranoid Android rom, but then decided to go back to stock rom as I couldn't access the play store.
Now here's the problem... I wiped dalvic cache and did a factory reset, but stupidly wiped the system at the same time.
There is no operating system on the phone at all now and my pc greys out the device when I plug it in.
Odin did recognize the phone, but I couldn't flash a rom to it as it kept getting stuck at 'nand write start' in all versions of odin.
When I try to start in recovery mode (volume up, power and home) I get the green android instead.
I read that it's game over if you can't enter recovery mode.
Have I killed my s3? :crying:
Possible you have damaged the NAND .
wiped the system at the same time>> then you just flash a stock rom via ODIN .
What phone have you what stock did you flash .

Sorry for the double post, I thought that the first one may have been in the wrong place, it won't happen again.
I never got to flash any stock roms at all because i'm new to all this and I assumed that doing a factory reset was going
to put me back on the stock rom automatically.
That's when I made the mistake of doing the advanced wipe and ticking the system box.
Excuse my ignorance... but is it possible to fix this even if I don't have recovery mode?
Thank you for your help.

If that wont work flash recovery and then use recovery to flash a stock based rom.

i had the same prob. Solution is easy. Just download the originial stock rom. You can flash this by using odin. Select pda and your file (should be a .tar file). good luck!
Firmware upgrade on a custom stock ROM ?? You don't do that. Do as above or you could flash philz kernel through Odin and restore you're bk up.
I had the same problem, but I thought,if firmware upgrade encounters an issue , you can't enter download mode

Tried flashing Kernel with ODIN also tried flashing a stock official ROM. No luck. Kernel gets stuck at NAND Write and ROM says FAIL.
Search for Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread. Try the stuff in that thread. Keep trying it. Only way you're fixing it is if you get it to successfully take an Odin flash.
I had the same problem, and flashing the Stock official ROM with Odin worked for me, just make sure you're using the correct version of Odin, I think I had to try one or two different versions before the flash worked for me.

Everything stops inbetween. The only thing I havent tried is flashing a bootloader. Since I'm out of options and replacing is too expensive for a 3yr old phone im willing to risk anything now. Thing is I was on neatROM jb 4.1.2 was this problem happened so which bootloader file can I try flashing via odin?

MistahBungle is right, no magic tricks here. If you really have followed through the entirety of my guide, and done it again on a different pc, and still no luck, then I'm afraid it's done for unfortunately. The one step I'd encourage you to try over again is flashing the 3 part firmware again. If you're satisfied that you've nothing more to try then throw it out. Or send it to me or MistahBungle.

SO now that my phone has been officially declared dead is there any way to recover some data from it? I have a few recordings and photos that are on the phone and I can get it into download mode so is there any possibility of data recovery?
Unlikely. A company who specialises in recovery of data from dead HDD's might be able to help, but it's very much a longshot & will be very expensive if possible.

The phone is NOT dead. You van save it by forcing it to download mode by usb jig (1$ on ebay), then flash unsecure kernel (like Siyah/Dori with CWM inside) using Odin. If you're unable to do it by yourself - take the device to a cellphone repair shop.

[HELP]ODIN Stock Firmware Flash Issue. Virgin GT-I9300

I'm having real issues trying to get a stock ROM on my Virgin Mobile S3 (GT-I9300) and I'm hoping you guys can help me. I've looked absolutely everywhere for a solution but so far nothing has worked.
OK so a little history about the problem:
Using phone as normal, and then randomly turns off. Turn it back on and I get the two Samsung splash screens loop booting constantly. I boot into recovery mode and do a factory reset - same problem. Clear the cache - same problem. Send phone back to Virgin and they tell me I've rooted and installed a custom ROM which I absolutely have not but they have a screenshot with the custom counter showing '1'.
I've no idea how this is possible, but I would have remembered if I'd installed a custom ROM. Anyway, they send it back because I'm not going to fork out £100 for them to flash it.
So...lots of research later, I download the latest Odin (3.09), find the most likely stock ROM that will work with my phone (Carrier is Virgin Mobile UK). I find this ROM on SamMobile: I9300XXUGMK6_I9300OXAGMK6_BTU. Cannot for the life of me find an actual Virgin rom so this apparently should be fine as it's a generic EU build.
Fine, so I apply it using the AP selection in Odin, connect phone, it goes through and applies fine "PASS" etc.. and phone reboots automatically.
Now, it just sits at the Samsung splash screen (the static white text) and doesn't go any further. I've left it upwards of 10 minutes but no dice. So look online and find threads that suggest booting to recovery and doing a factory reset will do the trick. So try that (Power+volume up+home) and same problem - static splash screen. Balls.
So now I don't know what to do. I either need to try an actual Virgin ROM which doesn't seem to exist(?!) or my phone is truely bricked and I'll finally have a good reason to destroy the thing.
Can anyone let me know what the next steps should be? I would be eternally grateful.
Thanks in advance.
I found the s3 to be a pain when doing a reset. Basically do it twice. Wipe, flash, wipe then boot. As far as I know btu is correct but virmin mobile used to rent their airspace from tmobile who are now half ee. Such a minefield..

When you say 'wipe' do you mean factory reset via recovery mode? Because I'm not able to access that. All I can get to is Download Manager to use with Odin...
I thought you said you could access recovery and you had cleared cache. In that case you are buggered. If it goes through the flashing phase and reboots but you still cannot get into recovery then you have 3 options..
1. Flash another rom but no lower than 4.3. Carrier shouldn't matter.
2. Full on flash with pit file (dangerous and can perma brick).
3. Return the phone under warranty and state that the flash counter also clocks official flashes too, samsung should know this as they make the phone.. staff need training if they say otherwise.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk
Try the rescue firmware from general forum, follow the instructions exactly as it includes a pit.
It sounds like nand failure, so it's possible that you won't be able to fix it.

Apologies for not being clearer, before sending it back to Virgin for the warranty repair I could access the recovery mode fine, when I got it back I couldn't - whether that was caused by the flashing of the firmware or something Virgin did I don't know unfortunately.

Thanks for the tip - I've flashed the stock recovery and I can now get into recovery mode! Looks slightly different but I can now access the factory reset/wipe cache options so that's some improvement.
I'm just downloading the stock international ROM as per this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/fix-s3-to-factory-unroot-stock-recovery-t2323847 but it's going to take a few hours. Thanks so much for your advice so far i'll report back once the download completes.
No joy
I can however get into download mode and recovery mode now. Is there anything else I can try? Is it possible I can get a custom recovery image on there and flash it with something other than the stock rom?
I've got a feeling you're correct and it could be a hardware fault. Virgin say I can pay £100 to get it fixed, if they have to replace the entire phone that would prove it wasn't 'tampering' that caused it so I could potentially get my money back I guess, if I complained. I think that might be my only option now.

I say this to people who have this sort of problem but I mention the dreaded word and they tend to ignore it but will tell you what to try anyway.
Install Kies 3 for android 4.3 (there I said it Kies) on the top menu bar click Tools then Firmware Upgrade and Installation
Follow the on screen instructions, this process will wipe the phone and install the most up to date original carrier / phone firmware, after this the phone should work and you can then root, flash roms etc , it may work for you so try it, don't just dismiss it because it refers to the use of Kies

Unfortunately I've already tried Kies, and it doesn't recognise the device when in recovery mode.

Make sure you are using the USB cable supplied with the phone and it is connected direct to your PC USB port, ideally the ones on the back but don't connect through any multi USB port connectors.
The USB cables and how you connect can make a difference
