new to photon would like some opinion on roms and rooting - Motorola Photon 4G

i have looked over a few threads and i am not new at all to rooting or roms.but i was just wondering some ideas on whats good that everyone seems to like.i am coming from the htc 3dvo which was a great phone i just had some issues so i choose to try the photon out. one big thing i have noticed is how much better the radio is for the photon i can get 4g in my basement which is just crazy.also i am kinda confused is the bootloader unlocked because i saw some custom kernals but then i see the bootloader is looked? any ideas and info would be great

welcome. once teh shock of "how slow the dev forums are" wears off youll find things round these parts are fairly straight forward. the bootloader can be unlocked but you lose wimax.. so its a choice ytou need to make... its possible however to have roms and wimax.. just not kernels

In addition to what shabby posted, you can root without unlocking and have a bootstrap recovery (only works on AC power). All with 4g and running various root apps, deodex and theme, you just can't flash custom kernals or roms with custom kernals - that requires unlocking.

ok so basically if i want to use a kernal because of the bootloader i will lose 4g which i do not want to do.so is it possible to oc with out a kernal?i will say i will miss oc to 1.8 on my 3dvo.also is the one click root still good to use?

You must be unlocked to use Cwm. No unlock means boot strap recovery. Boot strap recovery only works when plugged in.

Yep, you have to choose between oc and 4g right now. The Alien rom has a thread with a way to unlock, flash cwm and rom, relock to get 4g back and claims the method should work for other roms, but I haven't tried it. Maybe someone else knows if it would work with an oc rom.

You could use bootstrap if you click reboot recovery in the app. No ac required. Btw alien isnt the only locked rom. Skinny4g works too.

ok so i am about to root and i see there 2 good ways to go either use terminal emulator or the click root does it matter which one? also after i root how to i get recovery then so i can flash a rom im ok with no oc so i dont need a unlocked boot loader but i do want to make nand backup and flash some roms and themes.i know i am missing something i think i am just so use to the htc 3dvo way which is why i am getting confused

No it doesn't matter which method you use. Once rooted, install bootstrap_signed.apk from the Bootstrap Recovery thread to get the bootstrap recovery.

KISS (Keep is simple s.....) I have been flashing/rooting phones for..........8+ years. I see no reason to root or miss with my Photon (Well, I did root the other day because I was bored). SPB 3D Shell, I organiaze panels and rename like I want, got enough speed and power to surf like I'm at my desk, can map to my home network and listen to music or watch movies in HD. hell, I even sleep with it!!!
Not getting any sexual love from it, but neither was I when I had a female next to me either!

[Q] Could I root my Vibrant, but keep it stock?

Hey all, I would like to root someone's vibrant, BUT I want to keep it perfectly stock. The only reason I want root is so I could set the voltage lower and underclock the CPU using setcpu for higher battery life. Is that possible?
Yes.
Just download the root update. Zip file in the development section and that's it.
If you upgrade your firmware it will automatically unroot

yes, technically.
by rooting ONLY you end with stock and root access.
so yea, i guess it's like stock but not really lol.

Haha, well basically here's the thing. I've a friend's vibrant, but I think it's hardware locked. I want to be able to root it, and use a touchwiz rom stock or hacked, BUT I want the ability to be able to go back to complete 100% stock. I'm a complete noob when it comes to the Vibrant/Galaxy S phones that's why I don't want to try anything on my own. Especially since it's not my phone. haha thanks in advance for replyin! ^_^
Rooting the phone will not do anything to your phone except give you root access to the system files and such.
Just rooting it will not change anything appearance wise at all. And you can even still get OTA updates, that is if they ever actually get those working correctly.
So go ahead and root. It won't change a thing.
And you'll be able to use those certain apps that only work on a rooted phone.

Sure, this is entirely possible. Just keep in mind that undervolting and underclocking isn't going to gain you massive increases in battery life. The radio's and display are overwhelmingly greater current draws.

Ah, I made myself sound like a total noob. I actually know what rooting does, etc, in fact, I've a G1 that I used for roughly 2 yrs, running CM, used a DEFY running a blurless ROM. I was just curious about the Vibrant since it's very new to me and I'm just being cautious. However, I thought I had a hardware locked Vibrant, but I tried booting into recovery mode, and it worked, first a weird screen came up, it said something like movicheckstart, and then recovery mode popped up, is that fine, and does that mean it's not hardware locked?

I got root with superoneclick. Now, can I flash CWM recovery via recovery manager and then boot into recovery and flash a ROM?
Yea, it's what I did for a while. Stock with root so I could clock, remove bloatware and run apps that require root. Not a bad gig but Trigger is so much better.

Should I Root my Evo 3D

I have had my Evo 3D for a couple of months now and I want to root it. My questions are. Should I do it? What are some common problems if i do it? (example: when the evo 4g did not have 4g until they found the fix) What are some good ROMs up there?
I rooted my Evo 4g and traded it for the Evo 3D,so I have very little experience.
Thanks if anybody can give me suggestions

You aren't going to get an answer for this. All roms are different, and designed for different needs. The best thing about rooting is you can easily flash a rom, try it out for a few days, and if you dont like it, flash another.
I rooted mine a few months ago, just flashed a few roms this week
LeeDroids and King Cobra are very solid roms, Leedroids is harder on the battery tho.
I say do it... one of best phones only gets better once rooted.
dude, of course you should root it. when has an android platform been made worse by rooting?
if anything, it will fix it... because right now... yours is broken. injured. maimed.

It all depends on what hboot version you have. If you have hboot 1.50, you must use that method. If you have anything lower than that, you can use Revolutionary, which is MUCH easier.

Absolutely...
I had purchased my EVO 3D to replace my EVO 4G - within one hour of purchasing I had rooted and installed the MeanROM v0.4. Basically if you are purchasing a piece of hardware such as a SmartPhone, you should have the capabilities of unlocking its potential. However, always NADROID the device.
Synergy or Viper and the instructions on this website worked pretty well to root it.
http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-3d-hacks/how-to-root-evo-3d-2-08-651-2-and-later-htc-unlock-method/
Yes you should!
I will put in my .2 cents that I run the Stock Rooted ROM 2.17.651.5, and since 2.08, this ROM moves MUCH BETTER. If you want a stock feel, I would run the OEM ROM.
only if you want to do wifi tethering.
when I was on Windows Mobile 5-6.5, it was always a benefit to install custom roms because of performance and abilities benefits...
but with Android phones, there isn't usually much of a benefit to custom ROMs.
With my EVO 4G, custom roms gave me better battery life and interesting interfaces... but also ran slower, more random reboots, GPS would randomly not work right, Google speach listening would randomly not work, and "tweaks" that just caused bugs. For the last 2 months of my EVO 4G, I ended up just going back to stock and the battery life was poor, but at least the phone worked as intended.
My EVO 3D works perfectly in stock mode and this phone naturally has good battery life (at least 3x more life than my EVO 4G) so its gonna stay that way. I did root for the wifitether app, but not gonna go further than that. Keep it stock man.
+1

Another benefit to rooting & Stock Rooted, besides wifi tether, is the ability to remove HTC Bloat/stock apps that you don't need or use (T.I backup). If you need extra battery life, pickup a Seidio 4000mah battery ($55 on amazon).

[Q] two rezound questions (ICS, tether)

quick questions..
1) What is best way to wifi tether without voiding the warranty (S-Off)
2) if I decide to go S-Off route and install ICS Sense roms, is there a way I get traditional rosie (round one, not the rectangular one with more icons). I prefer original HTC rounded style rosie.
1) I don't know, but just for accuracy, this phone doesn't have s-off, just an unlocked bootloader.
2) If you stick with the GB ROMs you will have the Rosie you want, I believe. Here's a shot of my homescreen:
EDIT: Just saw you asked about ICS and original Rosie... I don't know.

Fera is completely right about not having S-OFF, we only have dev unlock which allows us to change boot, system, and recovery partitions.
There are wifi tethering options that don't require root. Most of which involve paying for wifi hotspot. There are free USB tethering options that do not require root.
If you go up to ICS, there is no current method to use Sense 3.5(the Gingerbread version of Sense). On ICS, you get Sense 3.6 or better which is the 5 column dock all of the current ICS ROMs have.

Yeah but the ICS Rosie is much more functional. It helps keep your desktop clean with its ability to put multiple apps into folders. When I briefly went back to GB to get the OTA radio update, I couldn't believe how much I missed the ICS Rosie.

If you actually have S-Off like I do and your running ICS like I am, then you should just be able to download the Wifi Tether App 3.1-beta 11. With that set up the device profile to Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE), enable routing fixing, and you should be set, also if you have the S-Off I guess you dont run into the issue of not being able to use the encryption, I'm able to use it no problem. There is no current method to get S-Off as previously stated by others, I have S-Off by pure luck, turned in my RELOCKED Rezound to my Local VZW store and the replacement they gave me had S-Off, stroke of luck!

being a noob.. i made a mistake of equating unlocked boot loader to s-off.
i am actually looking to wifi-tether without unlocking the bootloader. ad-hoc is fine. i know without unlocked bootloader, i get temp root. Is that enough to tether ? also i want to be able to tether without verizon figuring out (i think their official app changes the apn so they will know right away). And of course it will great if I can do it without buying any app..

sorry if you want to steal bandwidth, you have to root. Not sure how long temp root lasts these days.
And temp root is gone with the OTA so if you want the newer radios and the wifi tethering after the OTA you need to perm root.

What will you use root for?

When we finally get root (through either an unlocked bootloader or S-OFF), what are your specific plans on using it for?
I plan to:
Flash custom recovery
Obtain or create a stock de-odexed ROM (if there's an update and no one has put one out yet).
Remove all the bloat.
Insert my own specific apps and data to it (so I don't have to go around re-installing or updating everything every time I re-flash it)
Implement an OC kernel and find out if 1.5 GHz is the real clock speed of this processor and it was just underclocked, which has been discussed but not proven that I have seen. I know the latest OC kernel is only really getting 1.458 GHz, but I can dream.
Three-Dot Remap!
Get rid of Wi-Fi nag!
Flash ROM!
Utilize root-only apps I have.
Finally be content.
Get bored and flash Viper ROM
Wonder why I didn't use this in the first place
Figure out how to revert the theme back to stock HTC Sense but keep the tweaks.
Live blissfully ever after.
Quickly get bored.
Wonder when Jellybean will come out for our phone, or when an awesome dev will make it.
Wait impatiently.
Watch as Key Lime Pie arrives and we still haven't gotten Jellybean.
Freak out!
Yeah, the first 10 will happen for sure, likely the next 4 will happen after a few weeks, and inevitably, when my flashing addiction gets too great, the next three items will follow. Hopefully we'll have several Jellybean ROM options before Key Lime Pie comes out, though.
Personally, I'll be happy just getting root, either through the bootloader unlock or S-OFF, as long as I can get the ROM customized the way I want it.
I really don't think that's an unreasonable request, Verizon. Let us unlock!

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that got an unlock code, flashed recover and rooted before everything got locked up. My phone hasn't had any updates pushed to it, my root still works and I'm a happy camper!
Initially the reason I rooted was just to get wireless-tether to work, as I relied on it heavily with my last few phones. I don't know how I managed to get the Inc 4G on an upgrade without loosing my unlimited data plan, as I understand most folks were forced onto a tiered plan due to the phone being released after the grandfather date for the unlimited plans. Stroke of luck #2!
At the moment, root has bought me wireless-tether, allowed me to actually yank some bloat instead of just disabling it and given me more flexibility when playing around with alternate launchers. What I'm really waiting for is the forthcoming ROMs so I can get a de-Sensed OS on this bad boy. I can only imagine how wicked fast it's gonna be without Sense and all the other crap. Plus ICS is damn sexy looking all on its own!

I'll do a full Nandroid backup immediately after #1. Then:
Remove bloat,
install wireless tether
install 3-button remap,
install TiB and backup all installed apps+data.
put all of my custom ringtones into the system area so they stay put
After thoroughly enjoying that for a few days (or minutes), then make a 2nd Nandroid backup and flash the Viper ROM, assuming it's out of Beta test.

The 5 month wait for s-off/root was so very worth it:
Remove bloat, - DONE
install wireless tether - DONE
install 3-button remap, - pending
install TiB and backup all installed apps+data. - DONE
put all of my custom ringtones into the system area so they stay put - DONE
Custom tag on hboot, WiFi Nag gone...
Definitely still in the enjoying part.

What are you using to remove Wi-Fi nag on roms besides viper that already have it removed?

I modified the framework-htc-res.apk by removing the 4 pngs mentioned here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30679535&postcount=40
I wasn't entirely sure which version the files were downloadable in that post, so I just modified my own. It was really a joy: Actually being able to get to the files using Root Explorer, pulling them off of the phone to my PC, modifying the framework files, changing the filesystem to R/W, and then putting them back. I had nearly forgotten that simple pleasure.
Not seeing that stupid icon in the notification area has been so uplifting today. I swear I've turned on the display several times today just to not see it there.
The question is now what we going to do with s-off after this epically long stint without root and s-off. It's like the doors of willa wonkas factory being open for the first time, yes.

I'd like to overclock once we have a kernel that can do so. I'd like to undervolt as well to squeeze a little extra juice out of this baby
I know we are supposed to have s-off to use the chainfire 3D app but does anyone know if this actually do anything that's a +1

You can use either Chainfire's SuperSU or ChainsDD's Superuser. Either should work fine. Unless ChainsDD has updated his Elite, the advantage to SuperSU is the checkbox to disable and hide Superuser. I cannot say if that option is a Pro only option because I have the paid versions for both. (note: you can have only one of them installed at a time)
Then again Superuser Elite has OVER 9000!!!
No the chainfire 3D app that deals with graphic

It might, but note that the description says it isn't compatible with ICS.

Noob ICS Wifi tethering

Ok have been reading for a couple days now and while I know more I am probably more confused than when I started.
Goal: Wifi tethering / 4g hotspot without paying extra
Set up: OTA ICS update. I am still on a grandfathered unlimited plan so the normal hotspot isn't included. With my laptop I use easy tether through USB which works great. But can't be done on an Windows RT setup.
I thought I would just need to root and I could side load a wifi tether app but the new update it is hard to follow what is necessary.
Im confused, is this a question? are you making a work up? Looks like your new to forums i wanna say you posted in the wrong area.
First if you want to root start with the 1 click root. I did it the other day and it works great.
second Santod has a great OTA ICS deoxed and oxed roms here
http://forums.infectedrom.com/forumdisplay.php/79-Thunderbolt-Android-Development
lastly from what i know wifi teathering works on all the roms and doesnt require extra charge....the type of data plan you have is on on you weather unlimited or limited it still works without a charge.
Edit: i even went to get the links for you
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703455 is for the 1 click root (its more than 1 click since it requires a code but it tells you EXACTLY what to do)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1561975&highlight=4ext flash this once you have it all unlocked

SO Just to be sure. i have a stock thunderbolt never rooted or anything. To be able to use free wifi i can just do the 1 click root. then try and flash the ota ics deoxed?
need help
Ok. I'm a noob with some pretty tiring questions. Basically i have had my bolt since it was released with unlimited. Never really had any problems before but since the ICS update it lags and text message never send/receive attachments like pics. I have never rooted before or done any other customizations to the phone. It is a stock bolt with ICS, never touched. Basically i want to be able to use my wifi hotspot and see if i can get my phone working a little smoother. Question 1. All i need to do root this phone is the Run the correct program but i've seen two different methods to this. ONe is to run the 1 click root listed n the above post. But i see on another thread it says to use the root method availabe at infectedrom. Do they both work? Then after i run the correct root program i should flash a new rom which SanTod has a great one at infectedrom too. My question here is what is the easiest method to flashing a rom? There seems to be several different directions on this too.
The one click method might give you root but you won't be unlocked or s off. The current method for unlocking ICS is long and could be difficult so if you go that route set aside some time and get ready to post questions on the forum so folks can help.

Ok I see what your saying. But if i root can i remove the tetherguard so i can activate my wifi hotspot? Or do i need s-off to do that?
I'm not real sure but you could flash a custom ROM with that already removed once you are unlocked and s off. I'm pretty sure that tether guard is integrated into the framework and requires more than just removing the app.

First off thanks for responding.
2nd, can u point me in the right direction on rooting this device and then applying a new Rom. I see different methods on different forums. I just want to make sure I'm doing the safest and easiest method. Should do the method from infectedrom?

Yea use the infectedrom guide. Some others day to use the wrong image name for some of the files and that will confuse you. Plus there are lots of users that will help you with anything you you are not sure of. Follow the steps in the guide in the exact order they are listed.
